- Why there are so many cheap energy-dense foods
Another stellar article from Michael Pollan. How the farm bill results in copious amounts of added sugars and vegetable oils being consumed (further evidence of what makes us fat). - Menus for over 100,000 restaurants
Allmenus.com has a massive searchable list of menus - from all over the place. Amazing effort. - How much fat to eat
The American Heart Association has a tool that calculates your daily fat intake based on your vital statistics. Incredibly they say my daily limit for Trans Fats is 3 grams and cholesterol is 300mg (that's about 1 1/2 eggs). Sorry AHA. I don't buy it. I'll avoid the trans fats altogether and eat the eggs thanks. - Scary food - The Mac N Cheese pizza
Cici's Pizza have something "that will make your Mom proud". (via) - Exercise in a pill?
A dream come true for all lazy people everywhere. Researchers have a pill that could possibly stimulate fat metabolism in a similar way to exercise. Tested only on genetically engineered rats however. Someone tell the good Doctor that exercise is so much more than just fat metabolism (think good bones, good mental health, good cardiovascular system). - African models join the skinny quest
African fashion models are being told that skinny is the only way to go if they want to make it on the international scene.
More like this in Quick Links
yes, skinny is the only way for african models to go if they want to make it internationally. look at alek wek, ajuma etc. are they not thin? yes, of course they are. they are successful african models. i'm not saying unnatural thinness is something that needs to be promoted. but i'm rather just stated what is pretty much a fact. i'd rather they do not tell these women that it is entirely possible for them to make it in the industry when it is not. that would be misleading and would build up hope for these women when eventually their dream would be snatched from them because it was unrealistic in the first place. i'd rather healthy weight models were seen on the catwalk but as this is not the trend right now in the industry, i do not see the controversy in telling african models they need to be thin to make it overseas. they only thing i do personally worry about is women being told they have a shot but first need to lose X pounds and they their health may be put at risk. however, this is something that happens in agencies throughout the world, not just in africa.
ReplyMac n cheese pizza?!? I can hear arteries clogging all over the country...
:-)

ReplyAlek Wek is not a size zero, she looks good and healthy.
Pizza buffets here have scary pizzas like hotdog pizza (hot dogs + shoestring fries on top of a pizza), crunchy pizza (bacon + shoestring fries) and beef stroganoff (beef stroganoff + shoestring fries). The whole concept of putting potato chips on top of a pizza is scary.
ReplyYes, Mac & Cheese pizza! I couldn't believe it either. Saw their ad on TV and ran to the computer to blog about it. Thanks for the link!
ReplyNo starch should be made a topping for starch! And not just from a nutritional standpoint, but from a culinary one as well. Disgusting.
ReplyActually, a Mac-N-Cheese pizza sounds kind of comforting. But, for some reason, all I can think of is Edie Britt's refusal of a coupon for a free topping on a Scavo pizza: "Do you think I'd have a butt like this from eating pizza?"
The "slimming pill" is interesting. You're right - exercise has a lot more benefits than just losing weight, but if this were even a bit effective, it could be amazing. All I've read about the rapid growth in Diabetes 2 is scary.
THe AHA link recommended foods are stuff I avoid! This must be aimed at another audience.
Thanks for the links, Jim...
Replyyes, i agree that she looks healthy but that's because the weight that she is at is fine for her. it doesn't mean that she is still not quite thin. i guess she is what people think of when they think "successful afican model". by her being thin others who want to be where she is will most likely try to be like her. i've seen one too many african models with shaved heads and they are all thin.
i must say, that mac 'n' cheese pizza looks revolting.
finally, i really wish they wouldn't test something on animals when it is pretty much unnecessery. it's just cruel.
ReplyOh GOD, Mac 'n' Cheese is bad enough on its own!
ReplyI used to work at a specialty pizza shop that sold mac n' cheese pizza but ours didn't look nearly this nasty!
Replycici's has been advertising like crazy lately, which i find out seeing as they don't have any locations near me (boston). their ads drive me crazy- especially the one telling parents to "let you kids fill his cup with six different kinds of soda and eat pizza topped with macaroni". great. not only are they encouraging poor eating habits among kids, they're telling parents it's a good idea to defer to their kids.
Fat pill?!! I never heard of that before... this must be the answer to all our problems!
But seriously, theres too much money in it for people NOT to be working on an easy way to get fit. Our body is just a test tube of chemicals... they need to figure out a way to make people thin. We are wasting so much of our lives dieting and exercising.
Running for an hour a day is such a drag on my schedule. Lets find a solution damnnit.
ReplyI'd much rather they test on homeless people. It'd get better results as well.
ReplyTrue, but she is still bigger than say, Iman, who was also very successful. She looks like she could kick some ***, and I like that - not to mention the beautiful face. I wish more models of all ethnicities would be more like her, instead of emulating Naomi Campbell, who is really thin (and not 100% African, I know - she is also caucasian and Chinese).
Replyjan i agree with you. alek is thin but she doesn't look like she forced herself to get there. i would rather more models looked like they were naturally skinny but not emaciated. alek looks like the right weight for her plus it helps that she always looks so happy in her photos. she's one of my favourite models. naomi on the other hand...
ReplyIf this pill works, I'd be very surprised.
The food industry simply will not allow it on the market if it did work.
(Why? See Kevin Trudeau's "...they don't want you to know about" series for details about how the food and drug businesses want us to stay fat).
ReplyThat "exercise pill" sounds very, very scary, yet I'm sure if it's approved for human use, it will sell like, um, hotcakes.
If people take the pill and magically burn off fat without exercising, they'll also lose some muscle, which will slow their metabolism. Which will mean they'll have to keep taking it - brilliant marketing!
Of course, it would be much more healthy and effective to do some cardio and heavy strength training. Nah, it'll never catch on - it requires too much effort.
