10 Sustainable Food Resources

sustainable.jpg

As this recent discussion shows, there are a myriad reasons why we don't eat healthy foods. One of these is the issue of convenience. Driving a long way to a farmer's market to get fresh organic produce is not workable for some.

However, if sustainable eating does interest you, here are some resources that may help.

  1. USDA Farmers Market Directory
  2. Local Harvest - Find local farms and farmers markets.
  3. Eat Wild - Pasture-based farming
  4. Eat Well Guide - Find restaurants, farms, and stores.
  5. Heritage Foods - Find restaurants and stores supplying heritage foods.
  6. Food Routes - Help source locally grown foods.
  7. Co-op Directory - Find food co-ops.
  8. National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service - Local food directory.
  9. CSA Farm Search - Find farmers involved in Community Supported Agriculture.
  10. Finding harvest calendars for each state (for eating local produce in season). This site also has an excellent guide to finding hormone-free dairy products

Sustainable agriculture is all about growing food in a way that is environmentally responsible. To quote from the Sustainable Table project:

Sustainable agriculture involves food production methods that are healthy, do not harm the environment, respect workers, are humane to animals, provide fair wages to farmers, and support farming communities.

I hope making it just a bit easier will help people really take a look at places like these. I love going to my local farmers market ... luckily for me it's within walking distance. I get to walk about a mile roundtrip, and it's always so much fun to look around and see what's new. Plus the stuff's usually cheaper than my grocery store. It's a much better Saturday activity than going to see a movie ... and better for you. (Not to mention better for the rest of the world.)

This site could have duplications of the sites listed here (I know it lists Local Harvest), but I've found Sustainable Table (http://www.sustainabletable.org/) a valuable resource.

sorry... (my face is VERY red right now)... I just re-read the article. In my initial enthusiasm, I missed an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH, where it listed Sustainable Table.

oops.

Thanks especially for the link to the harvest seasons by location. I was looking for exactly this information for a post I was writing for Earth Day on "How to make your diet healthier (for the planet)" but couldn't put my fingers on it. Just added you to our blog roll!

You know, another great resource are our local restuarant owners. I work in a restuarant in downtown Kinson NC and it's here that I've learned about sustainable foods and the slow food movement.
Chef & the Farmer gets almost 60% of its ingredients from local, sustainable farmers. Chef Vivian Knight serves a great new American cuisine in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Come check us out if you're in the area or on the way to the beach.
