The Shoe Diet

shoe-diet.jpg

The Shoe Diet, by Isabelle R. Shaw, is about using shoes as a motivation for eating better.

Yes. Shoes.

At first I thought this was a spoof or satire - but apparently not.

“Food and shoes. Who would’ve thought the two were related? A clever, neurobiological explanation that gives a new meaning to the term ‘head over heels’!”
—Dr. Anne Germain, Clinical Psychologist, University of Pittsburg Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA

Essentially, the plan is about keeping an extensive food journal. By examining the food journal, one can pinpoint unhealthy habits, and emotional eating issues. The concept of shoes relates to rewards-based motivation.

To be honest - I'm pretty confused here (perhaps because I only own three pairs of shoes) - so I'll quote from the editorial blurb:

Simply put, fabulous shoes make us feel good and feeling good makes our brains send out positive signals to our bodies. The result is a shoegasm weight loss through great shoes! (see authors site)

Huh?

Shoegasm! Read the first few pages of her book (on her web site). She's probably a lot of fun in person =D

Now they are pushing it.

Wearing comfortable walking shoes that also look good helps me walk long distances, thus helping with weight loss. But I don't think that's what they are talking about here.

I think I get it ... If you feel good about yourself and the way you look, you're more likely to make healthy choices. For me, it's when I wear my skinny jeans. If I'm wearing them, it's somehow easier to pass on dessert.

Shoegasm weight loss? Did this author also write for Sex and the City? Totally a Carrie Bradshaw article.

Ditto there, I went out for dinner last night and put on jeans that I recently fit back into after losing 20 lbs. I felt so awesome being able to wear them again, there was NO WAY I was going to overdo it at dinner and jeopardize what I had achieved! Chocolate brownies look good, but not as good as I feel in my old jeans!Reply

You can write a book about anything. Here is proof. I would have to wrirte the "Me in My Bathing Suit" book. Just like for many of you, my weight loss is mostly measured in how I feel. I feel great in my bathing suit now. I think that was the real test. That's when I knew I made it!

I do like the idea: keep food journals to keep yourself accountable, and reward yourself with non-food items you like!

I'm not a shoe person, but I think about replacing it with something I do like--- like new bicycle toys or books!

Shoegasm! ahahahah.

The book seems so frivolous, but maybe intensely focusing on your "why" is going to be the big motivator and for each person, the motivation is going to be different.

We are definately more in need of motivation and "how" rather than "what." Be interesting to see if this book actually works for anyone.

Cheers
~Mike.

I'm not sure I'd have lost more weight but if I'd gotten a new pair every 5lb lost I'd have a fabulous shoe closet. I am a total shoe person though, so maybe it would have worked. And handbags... I need to go on the handbag diet.

Wow! The spelling in your exchange made it quite funny. (Dr.J, did you realize you called Ashley a LOSER? LOL)

Personally, I don't care much for shoes. I'd go barefoot 24/7 if I could still get service. And if people would stop throwing their beer bottles out of car windows; they make the sidewalks like minefields!

If this diet makes some [weird] people healthier, I'm all for it!

It's not the shoes, it's the process of focusing on something other than food and your problem areas (i.e., hips, stomach ...).

I stumbled across this idea when I was 15. My legs were easy to trim and tone. So to feel good about myself, I did everything to enhance my legs. As a result, my whole body benefited.

Hello
I am glad to read that you guys get the main idea of the book, which is rewarding healthy behavior---both eating well and exercising (and yes Melsky, chapter 4 is all about using your shoes to walk, run, dance or rollerblade...anything to get you to move!)

Whether you choose to reward and motivate yourself with shoes, skinny jeans, handbags or books, earrings, cd's, or just a peaceful afternoon to yourself, that's totally up to you. As long as you achieve your health goals, that's all that matters.

As I like to say, you have one body, why treat it like crap when you can treat yourself to a new pair of shoes?

thanks for all your comments.

I can see the author's point. Force men to wear six-inch heels and see how fast they lose the weight. I'm not sure how well it will work for women, though.

No..I was not saying Ashley was a looser, I mean loser!! (Could be digging a hole here :-) Just being silly after the 'spelling' lesion from a couple of days ago! I guess I'm old school, but if I wouldn't say something to a person's face, I hope I wouldn't hide behind the Internet to say it. Besides, on this site, losing can be a good thing!

It certainly applies for women. Since men are not particular about shoes, it would be difficult to have this kind of diet. Well, not for cross dressers.

That is an interesting way of viewing diet. As long as our mentality regarding our body and health is incorporated in the diet, it's is probably going to be successful.

Well, as long as eating better is part of the mix, then there no harm in the rest of it. I guess everybody has different motivational factors.
