Pocket Kitchen Scales
Salter have a new gadget out that combines a tiny set of scales with a diet diary. The small fold out scales has a database of 1,400 foods and can record food intake for up to seven days.
This may be useful to some - but I cringe at the thought of getting out a pocket-size set of scales to weigh my grapes before I eat them.

Note: This is not a paid advertisement or any such thing.

I once read something along the following lines on a dieter's blog:
She said she hated those women, who were evidently not in need of diet or portion control, but continuously said things about not needing a slice of cake for it may be a slippery slope or an unwanted permanent stay of fat ("a moment on the lip, a lifetime on the hip"). Then one day she had an epiphany. She realised that small changes - which look like self-denial and sacrifice - had made all the difference to these women, and they did not deserve to be hated or despised. She also decided she was going to take a leaf out of their book and make her small changes.
Likewise with the scales. Why cringe? The small changes you make, the small steps you take will benefit you (and all those who emulate you). One thing about being adults is not to be worry about what others think, is it not? If however others think it is odd, go ahead, tell them the story from the dieter's blog (I wish I had saved her link!). May be they will be grateful to you one day! :-)
ReplySorry that should read 'not to worry' or 'not to be worried' instead of 'not to be worry'...
ReplyOh, this takes diet obsession to a whole new level of anality.
Replyi want fold out scales that can weigh ME so I can weigh in the AM without eating and after eliminating. my schedule won't accomodate it now.
ReplyWay too obsessive for me. I barely even measure my portions, let alone weigh everything I eat. I measure portions of meats and breads and dairy, but fruits and veggies I don't really measure out.
ReplyI don't weigh food, either. I just kind of eyeball the portion size and make adjustments accordingly.
I won't knock something like this if it helps someone get their eating under control.

ReplyPortion control is a big issue for me. And not everyone is able to eyeball the right portions. That's why Dieticians regularly teach sizing techniques.
Needing help to determine portion control doesn't make you anal. If you don't need it great, but don't go condeming those who do.
ReplyI weigh pasta and meat when freezing it. Pasta cause I wanna make sure a package has exactly 5 servings in it, not a tiny little serving at the end. But weighing fruit is a bit much for me.
ReplyCuuute!
ReplyI love it. I wouldn't weigh grapes, no, but I'd love to weigh resteraunt food. Plus, it would give a clear signal to resteraunteurs that people CARE about portion sizes.
ReplyI like the scale, I even want to buy one. I'm just worried that people may weigh their food (ie a bun) but not the condiment they put on (ie butter) Then sneaky culprits like pieces of chocolate in the afternoon or 50ml of ketchup won't be included. People will wonder why they are still gaining when they weigh all their food at meals.
I really want a mini scale though.
ReplyI WANT ONE!!!!
ReplyClever way to market a nice scale for cocaine :)
ReplyGood call, and it is a nice shiny smooth surface too, so I guess it doubles as a mirror. The perfect Christmas gift for Kate Moss!
ReplySo how much is one and where can I get it?
Replycool and strange
Replythis is so perfect. i've actually been weighing my food before eating it lately, but with a big bulky kitchen scale. i want one of these, small, portable, and inconspicuos- anyone seen them advertised anywhere?
ReplyThese scales are principally valuable for the weighing of fairly calorie-dense foods; in my case, the only thing I ever use it to weigh are starchy carbohydrates (grains, legumes).
And let me tell you, one serving size of even whole wheat pasta, is diminutive enough to make me weep (I *really* like pasta, and miss it).
I can't imagine weighing, like, broccoli, either. But there is something to be said for observing and understanding serving sizes for things like pasta and rice, because no matter how much I am trying to improve my diet, what I assume is reasonable and what is actually reasonable, are two different things.
Until I weighed it with a scale, I had never, in my 34+ years, eaten a single serving of pasta.
For the most part, I've just given pasta up until I lose enough weight that I am eating just to maintain my goal weight. It's just not worth it :(
So, IMHO, there's a place for scales; it's just not something I'd use for everything.
ReplyI weigh everything...helps me. :-)
