Philips 598: The Phone For Weight-Conscious Women

Philips are releasing a cell phone targeted towards women.
What's intriguing about the phone is the feature set. The features include both a Body Mass Index calculator and a Basal Metabolic Rate feature.
Apparently women need to be able to calculate their BMI anywhere anytime.

You're probably getting a biased sample because most of the women who read Gizmodo are probably nerdy girls, not the walking Barbie dolls whom this phone is presumably targeted at.
Body mass calculator, c'mon. It's not that hard to remember m/h^2.
ReplyNot to mention that it's not likely to change throughout the day that you'd have to keep checking it... c'mon, it's not blood sugar.
ReplyAnd who says there's not extra pressure on women to be fit and thin?

ReplyI thought cell phones were an annoyance because you're accessible to everyone, including those you work with, 24/7. Now we've got to be nagged about BMI?
Whatever happened to getting away from it all?
ReplyIt's kind of cool, but I don't usually check my BMI since for me, BMI is incredibly flawed. I wonder how it figures out your BMR though. What's next, a phone with a heart rate monitor? Seriously, how much extra stuff do you really need a cell phone to do?
ReplyI'm of the male persuasion, but I think that this is kind of lame. I assume you need to repeatedly enter your weight and calories consumed. But, if it has some nice graphics, it might be motivating.
I keep all this kind of information in a spreadsheet along with my training data (resting pulse rate, % fat, mileage, difficulty, etc). Too much for a phone.
Now, if the phone could read RFID tags and compute your calorie input on the fly, we're taking tipping point technology! ^_^ (i'm kidding, honest)
ReplyWhat we need is a phone that you can wave over your meal and it will give you the exact nutritional analysis: total calories, fat, fiber, protein, etc...
And you can carry it on your person and it tells you
the calorie expenditure for the day.
Now that would be useful. The Philips 598 is a waste of energy.
Reply... Yes, I need this. Umm, because I might lose a few lb after an intense run and then who knows what my BMI is at that moment?
Weird phone... now a phone with Calorie tracking... that would be the ticket. Though, there are programs you can download for that already.
ReplyWhat we need is a phone that is actually a 10# weight to lift and curl.
ReplyHa, that would be MY cell phone. It's an antique Nokia that is HUMONGOUS! It doesn't tell me my BMI, but it does have a calculator so if I cared, I could figure mine out whenever.
ReplyOh come on! How many of you use every single feature of your cell phone daily? The calender, the alarm clock, the games, the calculator? This is a teeny piece of software they could add in that costs them practically zero.
It won't force you to calculate your BMI each time you make a call. I doubt people would use it more than once a month (AT MOST). I doubt most people would even notice it's there :-)
ReplyI only need a phone that makes and receives calls, shows me what time it is (cause I don't like wearing a watch), sends and receives text messages, and stores phone numbers. That is all. Any more than that is a waste.
I have a phone that cost $0.99 with the purchase of my husband's cell and it serves all those purposes just fine. I do love gadgets, but phones just don't do it for me for some reason. I have a separate camera and separate mp3 player, why do I need those on a phone?
ReplyCan say anything to me, Susan, I don't own a cellphone. ;P
I still think the 598 is a stupid idea.
ReplyWhat we need is a cell phone that actually WORKS. One that doesn't sound like you are at the bottom of the Marianas Trench; one that doesn't cut you off in the middle of a syllable; one that holds a charge for longer than 24 hours. Our cellular phone service in the U.S. stinks. We don't need more bells and whistles on the phones themselves (although I do like that idea of waving it over a plate of food and having it tell you how many calories you're about to eat - very cool idea! Wish it could be done). What we DO need is good working cell phones, period. All these accessories just makes the cell phone "a pig in a dress" (nasty analogy but appropriate here).
ReplyI'm waiting for a phone that scans your food and calculates your calories with a laser.
ReplyReally....as if I need to be reminded!
ReplyAnd then wait a couple more minutes for 300 sites to pop up on the internet about how the laser changes your food and gives you brain cancer and is gonna kill you.
