Is Subway Better Than McDonald's?

Subway have taken aim at McDonald's with their new "Fresh Fit" meals. The combo meals are compared side-by-side against a Big Mac meal. Subway's meal comes out at 265 calories, while the Big Mac meal hits a gluttonous 1230 calories.
But there's more to it than that...
Subway
The Subway low-calorie edge is always based on no cheese and no condiments (e.g. mayo). But they don't ask you if you want cheese - they ask you "which kind of cheese?"
And who orders a sub with no sauce?
What exactly is in the chicken breast fillet? Sometimes it tastes more like a piece of tire rubber. Subway call it a "Boneless roasted chicken breast patty". Patty? That would indicate there is something else in there in addition to chicken meat.
McDonald's
McDonald's seem to suffer from a multiple personality disorder. They tirelessly campaign about their healthiness - their salads, and their healthy options - even persuading athletes to appear in ads.
Then they turn around and roll out the "Angus Third Pounder" - a big beef burger that weighs in at 720 to 860 calories (depending on options) - and that's without any drinks or sides.
The Outcome
Let's face it: both outlets are massive businesses dedicated to increasing their bottom-line. Overeat any of their fare - and you will no doubt increase your bottom-line (so to speak).
At risk of sounding like a pimply-faced fanboy - I think that Subway offer the better options - but you still need to choose carefully. Subway tend to focus on their "eat fresh" mantra - while McDonald's try to follow every fad at once - hoping to reach every corner of the market.
To be honest, once you've seen the documentary McLibel - you will never view McDonald's Corporation™ in the same light again.
Subway Hint: Try ordering a wrap (less refined carbs) instead of a normal Sub - most Subway outlets are happy to put anything into a wrap.
McDonald's Hint: Avoid salads with the word "crispy" in them. Look for "grilled" instead. The crispy options have lots of salt and fat.
Who needs Subway or McDonalds, when there's always a Starbucks -- featuring the Odwalla juices -- loaded with vitamins, minerals and less than 200 calories. (No, I do not work for either company; however a natural beverage beats mystery meat, snythetic food and other empty caloric foods -- any time of the week).
ReplySubway is better than Macdonald's, but if you think your getting the "6 grams or less" one would have to get no cheese, or mayo in there sandwich. Honey mustard is a great substitute for mayo. The bread has loads of crabs in it as well. So if you want the healthiest thing from subway it would have to be a wrap with no cheese or mayo or a salad...
ReplyIf you don't want fat and you don't want carbs, what are you going to eat? Your body can only digest so much protein at once, so you need some other calorie source.
ReplyDrinks are empty calorie foods. They don't make you full. It's a waste.
ReplyLol.
ReplyArguing over which is best; Subway or McDonalds;
they are both blatently not healthy.
However how much salad they include in their foods.
They still use the same cooking instruments they would use with meat, and the same for vegetables.
Want to know why I think Subway is better than McDonald's? It's because I don't get stomach cramps and other GI problems whenever I eat at Subway. When I eat at McDonald's, I always do and have since childhood. The same goes for Arctic Circle. I don' know why.
Replyoh my gosh.. when i read this, i was surprised.. i just realised that the "cheese" put in subway is not healthy.. before, i thought that all the ingredients found in their sub was all that healthy.. less fats, more protein, and of course less calories.. hahahha... but now i know that next time, when i buy subway, i should not order the cheese, and sauce.. haha..
ReplyOkay, I disagree with the cut downs about subway. Yes, they put cheese on, but each and every napkin emblazons calories and fat on their top sandwiches, AND it tells you clearly that this does NOT include cheese. THEN it tells you how many calories is in the 2 slices of cheese, if you choose cheese. The nature of the sandwich is you build it, so you're already participating in the building process. Say, NO thanks to the cheese. Then, read your napkin, see that it's only about 70 or so points, and say to yourself, "DARN, I was in the mood for cheese and now that I know it's only 70 calories, I can add that next time in fully-informed peace." I mean, Subway has done the best that any restaurant has ever done in my opinion in being healthy, simply, delicious, affordable, fast, convenient, AND in disclosing everything for you. They deserve some sort of industry award. So.... I am disappointed the author of this blog would put down Subway's cheese thing. Also... try double toasting your sandwich... and see if could like it without the sauce. You might be surprised. Otherwise, honey mustard ain't bad in the calorie realm. Bon appetit!
ReplyHow nice that peanut butter was deemed a-ok for the poor folk by the food police (Iggy). Let them eat peanut butter doesn't have quite the ring that let them eat cake has, unfortunately.
Anyway, I love Subway. It, Taco Bell, and pizza chains are pretty much the only fast food places I can eat at. I'm a vegetarian so no burger places for me. (On road trips my friends insist on stopping at McDonalds, so I usually get stuck eating a fruit and walnut salad for dinner..that's pretty much the only thing on their menu for vegetarians. Oh, and parafaits. Their parafaits are awesome. But not as a meal.)
ReplyHey Rick
ReplyWhat's with the personal attacks? You don't think she should be upset with the McDonalds Corporation? I would.
The IKEA in my area has a play area that is monitored by staff members. When I drop my daughter off, I feel secure in knowing that someone is on hand to pay attention to what she and the other children are doing. Why shouldn't Mickey D's? They know the children are going to want to play. Why not make it safe?
It's their responsibility. You would be just as liable if you didn't shovel the ice on the steps of your porch. Anyone visiting could sue you if they slipped and fell. It's a safety issue.
For the record Cindy Loo said that she wasn't there at the time of the accident. How is she at fault?
Subway or McDonald's??
These days, I always choose the kid's meal option and have the fruit instead of fries (McD's does apple dippers, Wendy's has mandarin oranges, Arby's does a fruit cup). And Subway does a "mini" sub which is smaller than the 6" one (But not well advertised). Get extra tomato, extra pickle, extra lettuce and skip the mayo. It all can be good if you use a little sense.
These days, I try to check a restaurant's nutrional values online before I go. Then, I just don't even look at the menu when I get there. The problems come when a friend suddenly wants to change her mind and go some place else. You can try to make good choices, but some of these restaurants can really pull a fast one on you. The best choices are sometimes not obvious at all. I REALLY HATE THAT!!
ReplyI searched the McDonald's website for the nutritional information on the new Angus burgers, "the bigger and huger and biggest and hugest" new burger that McDs is putting out, and alas, it wasn't there. I found the nutrition facts on a watchdog diet website. Browsing the nutrition facts of the regular menu items was enough to make me slightly ill anyway.
ReplyHow is there any doubt that subway is better than McDonalds? Anyone with half a brain knows that adding sauce and oil adds fat and salt and calories to a subway sandwich. What about ordering whole wheat bread, is that better a better way of cutting refined carbs than ordering a salty wrap?
How is that if a person is low on cash, they're only option is to eat yuck food laden with salt, fat, sugar, kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, all of which becomes more expensive as time marches on?
So... As a Subway worker, I have to pretty much memorize all of the calories and such. If you want Mayo, go Light. It's the same taste (Not Miracle Whip) and half the calories.
For kids, we offer a four inch in white and wheat now. And we've got a new wheat bread anyways.
We aren't that unhealthy. Some of our sandwiches are kinda bad but, for the most part, we're way better than most fat food.
ReplySo here's the issue. Americans hate McDonalds. They even have their digs against Subway [the oh-so FDA approved]. So why do we keep eating there? I think everyone would benefit from staying on a fat farm and I'm dead serious. We sit all day. We eat like we are athletes. [Let's face it, almost none of us are atheletic in our daily lives. We don't do hardly anything. All you need to live is 3 or possibly two meals a day the size of your fist. It may be hard at first but you will become used to it if you can stick it out to change your lifestyle. If you are overweight [even a little] see things like this:
Take your weight and times it by seven. That is the number of calories you are eating every single day in order to maintain your current weight. That's how you are staying as big as you are basically. Now, multiply your weight by six [if your BMI percentage is NOT healthy and you ARE overweight] and that is the number of calories you need to cut down to in order to lose healthy weight and stay that way. As soon as you have stayed at that weight for atleast 2 weeks [preferably 3] cut it down again. Multiply your previous weight [the very first number you had] by 5 and cut it down again. Keep going until you are down to a normal weight if not a good weight for you.
ReplyWhat you really need to do is also just to think like a minimalist. All you need is 1 cup of something/anything. It honestly doesn't matter what it is but you MUST have the correct portion. Think like a minimalist, always imagine that your goal weight is attainable, and keep shrinking. Your life will be happier.
3 or two meals the size of your fist? Maybe once I've reached my goal weight, but I've found if I cut my food intake too much I don't have the energy to work out, I'm constantly hungry and I don't lose weight any quicker.
I agree with the minimalsim thing though. It makes food preparation less stressful and I feel less sluggish. As for being happier? I feel physically better but I wouldn't say happier.
As for McD's and Subway, come on, do you really need a label to tell you if something is good or not? I guess I don't really get all the fuss. Most of my meals come from home.... yeah I just don't get it. Sure these people suck for making unhealthy food but the choices are just as tough at the supermarket. The onus is on us to make choices.
Reply
ReplyWell, yeah, but some of us ARE athletic. I would pass out if I only ate 2 meals the size of my fist each day. I do agree with you that most Americans DO eat way too much though. I personally like the "volumetrics" approach to a healthy diet. If you eat foods that don't have a lot of calories per gram, you can eat more of them. People don't get fat from eating veggies and fruits; they get fat from eating Krispy Kremes and Doritos.
Wow, three meals the size of your fist? Maybe that's a good idea..if you're going for the anorexic look. There's no way that can be healthy.
Even if it IS healthy, I doubt anyone will be "happier" eating like that. Starving all the time, not eating anything you like...what a sad excuse for a life. I'm all for moderation, but not militaristic moderation.
ReplySubway is the best man i can not believe somebody wood choose Mc.Donalds than subway!!!!! well just droppin to say i love SUBWAY!!! LOVE SHIANNE
ReplyI HATE MCDANOLDS!!!!!!!!!!!!EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! WHEN I EAT THERE I FEEL SICK!!!!!
ReplySUBWAY IS A MUCH BETTER CHOICE IN MY EYES!!!!!
YUM!
bottom line, a sandwich will always be healthier than a burger
ReplyWhile both establishments have unhealthy options I personally think you can eat pretty healthy at both places. It is all about making smart educated choices.
Replyduh I order subs with no sauce.. think health consciously
ReplyYes, we do have the choice. But, look at all the crap they show on tv to our kids. They even desperately try to show that their shit is healthy even if it isn't.
Fast food has become the tabacco of America and the corporations tempt you to indulge in their food.
