The Weight Loss Wisdom of Celebrities
Governments can spend millions trying to sell you their nutritional guidelines. However a single comment from a celebrity is enough to change the eating habits of thousands.
Have a look at the "wisdom" from these celebrities:
- "I diet every day of my life. After 40 you’ve got to." -- Kim Cattrall
- "I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying." -- Beyonce Knowles (more)
- "I was sick" -- Lindsay Lohan (more)
- "Basically you can have a tiny bit of everything you want. When I'm really, really hungry I'll be like 'I need a morsel!' So they'll give just me whatever is there (on the plate), but it has to be less than a forkful." -- Mariah Carey
- "I'm trying to go 'f*** it' and have bowls of pasta or whatever makes me happy ... f*** it, you've got one life - live it." --Keira Knightly on dieting

Dolly Parton claimed that when she decided to lose weight she ate anything she wanted, all that good southern cookin', but she ate tiny portions. I tried that for years, but I realized that I juist couldn't stop with "tiny portions" with some foods.
ReplyYes, the tiny portions thing never worked for me either. I'm better of with foods that have a low caloric density and greater volume. My favorite anti-binge weapon is a green pepper, a cucumber and celery stalk. Fill my belly on 76 calories! then maybe I can have a "morsel" of mashed potatoes or whatever.
As to Beyonce and the master cleanser (aka lemonade diet) with today's pressure to be thin, many look at her "after" pictures and say fine, that's worth it, not caring that she even says she felt like she was "dying." I'm doing Master Cleanse in April, but not for wait loss. I do it once a year to clean out my digestive tract and as part of my spiritual renewal for the coming year.
ReplyBeyonce goes on those types of fad diets because it's her "business" to be thin. But I thought the point of weight loss was to be healthier. (Though I realize most people just want to look better.) So I can't see the point of such a dangerous diet. There are other ways to lose weight without doing something so extreme. Not to mention if your unhealthy diet makes you thin, but sick, you're not going to be looking too good.
ReplyEating "a morsel" when you are hungry is no way to lose weight. Eventually you will go and eat the whole thing.
ReplyThere's no need to eat like a rabbit. Even when you're losing weight, you can still eat meals.
I wouldn't listen to the advise of any of these women, except maybe Kim Cattrall, who looks good; but what was the advise? (I do think Beyonce is adorable and foolish eating is the prerogative of the young.) The other two look either unhealthy or unnatural.
However, with the probability of national healthcare, the government (taxpayers) will be paying the medical bills. What will the government's role be in our eating and health habits? Will there be a public outcry against people who live unhealthy lifestyles?
ReplyI like Keira Knightley's "f*** it" diet, LOL.
Kidding aside, I would not take dieting advice from a celebrity. They have too much pressure to look a certain way and go to unhealthy lengths to achieve it.
And I find it ironic that after all the flap and hoohad made about Beyonce's diet and her "new look" it was Jennifer Hudson who took home the award.
ReplyMany celebrities claim that life is too short to diet, yada, yada, yada. Sure they eat whatever they want - in their dreams.
They want to give the impression that they don't have to sweat and follow strict diets to achieve their enviable figures, because they know that sets them apart from us. If you believe that Keira Knightly eats "bowls of pasta" on a regular basis, I have a great diet plan to sell you. I'll throw in the bridge for free. ;-)
ReplyCelebrities all lie about their diets and weight. Period. Like Red Panda said, they mostly pretend they eat tons and are genetically blessed, or they say they eat nothing, like Mariah Carey, when just a look at them will tell you otherwise (not that there is anything wrong with that - I think that aside from wardrobe, Mariah looks great, but that is not the body of a woman who starves and eats morsels...)
ReplyTiny bites does NOT work for me. I try to select foods thoughout the day that are not very calorie dense.
But what helped me the the most was when I learned to not eat until I was full, but to eat until I was not hungry.
Big difference, and it made a big difference in my weight loss results
Brian
ReplyTo peace cat: ^(high five) on that comment, I agree totally!
Reply> There's no need to eat like a rabbit. Even when you're
> losing weight, you can still eat meals.
Not to mention rabbits are always actually hungry and want to eat fairly constantly. At least mine are. (=
ReplyMost celebrities don't exactly lose weight in a healthy way. For the most part, they stop eating and barely work out and many of them smoke, do drugs, drink loads of caffeine, and don't get enough sleep. Some celebs are actually honest about how much it sucks that they have to watch their physiques so much, but I cannot stand it when they say "I eat whatever I want and I never work out" when you really know they spend 3 hours a day working out and eat seaweed.
ReplyIf one wants to follow celebrity advice, you probably couldn't do better than what I recently heard the Canadian singer Jann Arden say - she lost a lot of weight but over a long period of time, and seems to be keeping it off. Jann said she ate a lot of fibre, and ate all the time. This is what I have been doing too (not because Jann said so, I was doing it before that) - if you don't allow yourself to get hungry because you are full of things like whole grains, yogurt, fruits, veggies, and lean proteins, then you aren't tempted as much by fast food and other junk. I think Jann also did a lot of walking and running, and I walk a lot too, and have fun playing badminton and squash rather than "working out" at a gym which I hate. I am not losing weight fast, but the overall trend on my scale is a downward one.
ReplyIt's true that you can't just trust whatever celebrities say. But by Mariah's physique, you can tell that if she didn't diet she would be quite obese.
ReplySo disappointed that Beyonce did that.
ReplyGood point Jim, although you missed the Queen of dieting (Oprah). Her boot camp diet was diabolical - and she made her staff go on it too.
Why doesn't the government find a celeb who is willing to endorse healthy eating? Might even be one who will do it for free just to encourage people to live better lives. Celebs endorse McDonalds, Pepsi and the like (for an exorbitant fee) but there must be one somewhere who will do it for "charity"
ReplyWhat's wrong with eggs and toast and fruit for breakfast, a salad or sandwich for lunch, and meat, rice or potatoes, and vegetables for dinner? We have too many choices and it's making people fat!
ReplyHmm for charity? Can the brag about it a lot and try to get a lot of publicity for good deeds? That's what most celebrities seem to need before they do something for charity.
Maybe Angelina Jolie, but she hasn't been quite the model of healthy living...
ReplyIt's hard not to listen to celebrities because they have the bodies that we want. What have helped me keep things in perspective is the knowledge that they live in another dimension and the rules of this deimension does not apply.
ReplyI see it the opposite way as you do, mg. I think that whatever "diet" she is on is not the "tiny morsels and starvation" one she described. She eats enough, and it shows. I don't buy that she is starving and eating as little as Nicole Richie to look like she does; that just doesn't happen, even considering that people have different metabolism. She may have little morsels in public, but trust me, she is eating plenty.
ReplyJust because Mariah's not as skinny as Nicole Ritchie, it doesn't mean she's not starving too. She could be starving so her body's holding on to the extra weight.
ReplyI find it kind of ironic how Kiera Knightley is commenting on weight loss. She's SOO THIN, and she's talking about forgetting about her weight and just eating all she wants.
ReplyI've lost 10 pounds this past week by eating nothing but meat and vegetables. Since I was never hungry, and always in a positive nitrogen balance, the weight loss was all fat (beyond perhaps a pound or two of water).
It's called Protein Sparing Modified Fast. Look it up.
ReplyKailash: You might want to be careful with that. While you are eating a lot of protein with this diet, your body can still recognize starvation. Protein can be used for energy too. If you are losing more than 2 lbs or 1% of your body weight per week (whichever is greater), you should be worried. If you are a muscular male who is eating a hormone precursing diet (high fat, moderate protein, low carb), you just might be able to push it up to 2.5 or 3 lbs, but you're risking muscle loss there.
ReplyThere are many celebrities out there who manage their weight in a healthy way. I recently met a celebrity trainer who has one of the longest lists of Hollywood clients out there - all A-list celebs - and his diet and fitness plan is sensible and healthy. And it works! His clients love the results.
Replybeing a fashion model im faced with this everday..thin makes money! and its so much money that morals and beliefs are temporarily forgotten..if i lose 10 pounds and end up making 500,000$ that year because of it ill lose those ten pounds! with half a mil im closer to being financially set for life and never working in the fashion industry again
theres a difference between what you get out of it
if someone told you if you lose 10 pounds youll feel better about yourself then you MIGHT go ahead and do it
but if someone told you if you lose 10 pounds within a few months youll get a couple million bucks then youd try a whole lot harder..which is why its so easy for models to lose weight and stay thin..because we know that if we stay thin for a few years by the time our fashion model career is over we'll be able to eat whatever the hell we want and have enough money to never work another day!
ReplyI have been using the F word and I wished I had to learn from my vices or mistakes or else I'll get into more trouble.
Besides that why can't celebrities have a balanced diet that isn't crazy or limiting (living on maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper isn't enough, Beyonce should eat more tomatoes, peppers, turnips, meat and breads). You can't limit yourself to pasta, even if your body needs more carbohydrates more than vegetables but balance it. No wonder many women celebrities appear sort of thin and slight artificially. However naturally thin women would eat anything and remain that form.
Actually those with very fast metabolism are lucky since they can burn fat faster especially in your younger years.
ReplyFor those who want to die young, I suggest you try on crazy diets, they're a great excuse for being morbid and committing suicide. :D
