The Food Doctor Diet
The Food Doctor Diet has been around in the UK for a number of years. Recently the diet has been promoted in an on-line format.
I purchased this book a while ago (from a bargain bin) - and found it to be quite an easy and helpful read.
The Food Doctor Diet is from Ian Marber who runs the Food Doctor nutritional clinic in London.
Where the book differs from most other diet books is that it is a glossy colorful book full of lots of photos and diagrams. Most diet books tend to be a drab black-and-white affair.
Outline
Let's cut to the chase. The Food Doctor starts with an explicit 7-day meal plan. You could call it a detox. It consists of a lot of soups, and does away with simple carbs, stimulants, and saturated fats.
Principles
After the 7-day plan comes the "Plan for Life", and there is no mention of calorie counts - just portions. The Plan for Life is based on the following principles.
- Eat protein along with complex carbs. Lunchtime will include starchy carbs, but dinner drops out the starchy carbs.
- Stay hydrated - minimum 6 glasses of water daily, no alcohol except with a meal and less than 3 times a week
- Eat a wide variety of food - while being wary of any food intolerances you have, and also of high-gluten grains
- Eat frequently - little & often is best
- Eat breakfast - don't skip this important starter for the day
- Avoid sugar - foods with added sugar or sugar in all its forms are best left out
- Exercise - use a regular exercise program
- Follow the 80/20 rule - stick to the plan for 80% of the time, and for the other 20% you can indulge a little or be less rigid
- Make time for eating - sit down & relax.
- Eat fat to lose fat - consume essential fats only, to make up no more than 30% of your total energy intake
Overall - a sensible way to eat.
NOTE: The Food Doctor Diet website is available for both US and UK users.
What's going on... this post's been up for a day and no comments! I'm really intrigued! Hmmm sensible advice = no comments... interesting. :)
The Food Doc has tons of products out here in the UK. Good marketing.
ReplyMike! Interesting comment! I was just thinking about how on this Blog, if a post gave excellent advice ie. eat healthy and exercise, there would be 10 comments and if the post said, 'new miracle diet pill' there will be 6 pages of comments! Is there any question why so little ever changes?
ReplyHA HA well this one must be super-extra-amazing advice then! And these 3 comments don't really count because we're just commenting that there aren't any comments!

ReplyI honestly think the book is quite good - although I can imagine that the author probably has quite a business going on in the UK (as Mike says).
As for comments - you guys are so right. One of the most massively commented posts ever in diet-blog history was about a super-powerful diet pill. Due to coverage of that same diet pill on TV shows - that one post got hit with over 270 comments in just a few days.
People were almost drooling with desperation to get the pill...
Human nature is what it is...
ReplyYeah... but what frustrates me I guess is that I find it so easy to lose weight if I need to and people are desperate/frustrated! That much is clear. If you do a few simple things it really is quite simple.
Maybe one problem is folks are looking for a quick fix -- the lose 10 pounds per day diet or whatever.
This post actually has been very helpful to me because I was wondering about the amount of comments on Passion for Health. The point is I actively try to give no fluff, simple information with as little muddy water as poss.
That style isn't really going to attract comments. So for me... No comments = good post! :)
Cheers Dr J/Jim
Reply~Mike.
There not a secret diet or pills....just the way we eat and what we eat!! Humans don't get that.
Of course running, walking will help!!! We think that sitting down and get the magic pill we loose fat!!!
Wrong.......just get up and go for a walk.
We can be slim all are life just change bad habit.
Enjoy your walk!!!
ReplyThe eat fat to lose fat is a particulary good tip. The good fat! Most people don't understand how that works. You cannot fool your body -- it's gonna need the slow fats to balance the quick carbs energy-wise. Why not cooperate with your body instead of depriving yourself? It's so much nicer. :o)
By the way, the extra lipase in raw fats *supposedly* helps dissolve your fat stores...and that makes sense in my experience & knowledge. Not to mention everyone agrees that fat in general is *the* most heat-sensitive macronutrient. That means don't skimp on the good olive oil. ;o)
ReplyI think the food doctor diet rocks. I am the fussiest, most comfort eating yo-yo dieter there is and I have been following this plan for weeks now, I have lost 10lbs in weight and feel SO much better. It is a sensible plan and easy to follow and easy to adjust recipies and principles to suit your own tastes in food. It gives permission to eat plenty, but of the right things. No fuzzy heads, and energy like I have never experienced.
ReplyThank You :-)
