Food Diary of a Fashion Model

New York Magazine has listed the 7-day food diaries of four people in the fashion industry; two models, fashion editor, and producer.

Here are a few examples (enlightening to say the least):

21 Year old female model (day 4)

10:00 A.M. Home
One bottle Kombucha tea. It’s a fermented Chinese tea. Supposedly it has all of these properties for the immune system, metabolism support, digestion. One apple.

1:45 P.M. Clinton Street Baking Company
Bowl of lobster bisque. I only stared at the biscuit that came with it.

8:00 Cube 63
Two gyoza, one piece scallop (no rice), one spicy scallop roll, one Clinton roll. Again, low-sodium soy sauce. I love sushi. It’s lean protein, it’s good for you. About a liter of water throughout the day.

25 yr old Male Model and Personal Trainer (day 1)

5:30 A.M. Home
Bowl of oatmeal with flaxseeds, banana, skim milk, and a scoop of nonfat Greek yogurt and honey. One glass of water, and a tall cup of black or green tea. I have this meal just to get me out the door. This way I won’t be ravenous a few hours later.

8:30 The Coffee Shop, Union Square
Five-egg-white-tomato-and-spinach omelette with goat cheese and a piece of multigrain toast. One glass of water.

NOON Cafeteria
Turkey meat loaf with Brussels sprouts and sweet-potato mash. One unsweetened iced tea.

3:00 P.M. On a shoot
A few pieces of pork tenderloin and about ten pieces of asparagus as a snack. One espresso.

6:00 Equinox
A protein shake with peanut butter, banana, and spirulina. I like the spirulina because it has phytovitamins. I had Hodgkin’s lymphoma last year, so I’m really big on anti-oxidants and keeping my body clean.

8:00 Home
Whole grilled branzino with wilted kale and fava beans that my wife made. One peppermint tea.

Fashion Editor

7:30 A.M. Home
Two 1,000-mg. Emergen-C with seven mineral ascorbates and 32 mineral complexes, one ounce of Super KMH, Mona Vie (berry extract), aloe juice, chlorophyll, two Nature’s Way Fenu-Thyme, one advance natural FloroMax, three Wellness Formula tablets, twenty drops Super Lysine Plus, two Theraveda Usha daytime stress formula tablets.

10:30 Sant Ambroeus
Milanese eggs and iced skim latte.

2:00 P.M. Patrik Ervell
Bottle of water and glass of white wine.

3:00 Waiting for the United Bamboo Show
Water.

4:00 Waiting for the Diane Von Furstenberg Show
Water.

5:00 Waiting for the Luella Bartley Show
Water.

6:00 Waiting for the Phillip Lim Show
Water.

7:00 Waiting for the Tuleh Show
Water.

8:30 At a Friend’s London Terrace Apartment Watching TV
Two glasses of red wine, Camembert and crackers, three olives during Prince’s Super Bowl halftime performance.

11:30 Home
Repeat Fenu-Thyme, Wellness Formula tablets, and add Theraveda Nisha nighttime stress formula.

Can I have a fruit smoothie instead of a protein shake? And which is better for you, red or white meat? And which is less calories/fat because I have a friend who only eats white meat and she's like super skinny, but that might be because she's a dancer

I am 5'7 and weigh 104 pounds and model, at first I realized I had an eating disorder but wouldn't admit to it. I just loved control. Then my life went out of control and I was wrapped up in an non existent world where women where suppose to look like poles instead of healthy and beautiful. I am now 106, and am a freshman in college, I pulled myself from modeling in hopes to get a shape back. I know you look at some of these women and say, I wish that was me, however you have no idea. No one wants to look disgusting, no man wants to be with a girl with bumps as boobs, our society is so messed up and its really really sad. Looking at these girls diets just makes me sad for my generation....

I am a thin female and I don't really watch what I eat at all. I could never survive on as little food as that model! This is what I ate today as an example:

8.00am 4 crispbreads with a slice of ham and a tomato

1.30pm chicken with couscous and vegetables, cup of jasmine tea

3.30pm 2 carrots, 1 apple, cup of jasmine tea

6.00pm tinned sardines in tomato sauce with 2 slices wholemeal toast.

8.30pm raisin cookie and cup of hot milk

My breakfasts varies, normally some cereal with soya milk or skim milk, wholemeal toast or crispbreads.
Lunch tends to be a sandwich, bagel or some soup.
Then for dinner I'll have vegetables or salad with chicken and potatoes, or a three bean casserole. I'll often eat some chocolate in the evening but I just don't eat a whole big bar of it!

I am from Venezuala. Done some modeling, but not anymore. I could qualify to be a fashion model. My diet is very high in seafood and meats--mainly lean meats, but also beef every once in a while. I eat some veggies and fruit, but not a lot. Diet is a bigger determinant of my figure, not exercise.

I can't believe that female model doesn't eat any real food until 1:45. Wow!

I am Asian (Chinese) woman, 23 years old, sometimes do modelling because I've told that I have exotic looks of Asian female.

My Height is 5 and 8 ", and my weight is just only 48 kg's...

I don't barf foods that I've eaten, I'm not anorexic aot bulimic, or having any other eating disorders...

But I can share my rule for staying slim (for everyone here):

You EATING, do not NIBBLING or SNACKING.

And you eat any sort of foods..., hey, foods are really delicious, the more you prevent your eyes from seeing any delicious foods, the more you starve into it, and that's physiological starvation.

But indeed, there some substance I always try to avoid:
Cane sugar (submit it to corn sugar), wheat flour in noodles/instant noodles/spaghetti (when you're Asian it's difficult to avoid the attemption of delicious fried noodle, though, hahaha.), heavy cream/full milk (I avoid it more to my acne problem...).

Here's my example of my daily diet, I don't count the exact calories I'd take daily, but just maintain it balance... You have to consume enough carbo, protein, and vitamins...

Breakfast (8-9 am):
1 full cup of Ovaltine hot chocolate or PURE juices
2 slices of white bread, you can take it with cheese (normal cheese), or thin layers of sweet jams
5 butter crackers
1/2 block of dark chocolate for an indulgence. ;) (when I mean dark chocolate, it's REAL DARK, choose minimal 76% cocoa in it)

DURING THIS PERIOD, DO NOT SNACKING (it's just physiological starve)! (Because I believe you have just eaten enough foods for doing your activities 4-5 hours ahead.)

Lunch (1-2 pm):
150-200 gram steam white rice
5 oz any kind of meat (I eat beef, pork, duck, fish, chicken)
1 vegetable dish or chicken soup...
5 small butter cookies as the dessert
1 plain ice tea or PURE juices
1 fruit (mango, oranges, banana, pineapple)

DURING THIS PERIOD, DO NOT SNACKING (it's just physiological starve)! (Because I believe you have just eaten enough foods for doing your activities 4-5 hours ahead.)

Dinner (7-8 pm):
100 gram steam white rice
1 portion of soupy dish... (light dish)
5 slices of fried nori
1 cup of warm and plain green tea
1/2 block of dark chocolate for an indulgence (again). ;)

DO NOT SNACKING ANYMORE, just remember, for any delicious foods, there are still TOMORROWS!

Eat all foods in moderation and in certain times (Divide your daily eating times into 3 parts, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and snack nothing during each periods, or just take fruits...).

That's all... ;)

I will be glad to receive any comments about my daily diet... Thx.

It's amazing to see what people eat. I thought the one who ate the least would be the one who ate the most. Can we say water diet?

Eat to live, don't live to eat.

When you think about it, it really changes your perspective on how you should eat.

Life's too short for diets! I am 55 and have maintained my weight at 7 and a 1/2 stone for the last 30 years. I am 5' 4. I love good food and wine [and beautiful clothes] and although I have the propensity to put on weight (easily), I eat what I want but always in moderation and exercise when I can. I would have no problems eating less to look thinner but thankfully, I'm happy with my body as it is. Modelling must be hard work if fashion models who have to go on these quasi starvation diets to be able to get work? I'd love to know what it is that drives young women to sacrifice their health and sometimes even their very lives to become models? Love of money? fame? There must [surely] be more to it? I'd like to know if only to understand models better.

Hey, I am a model and I am telling you this is NOT a way a model should be eating. No, I don't have the fastest metabolism, and I too have struggled with losing the weight, but I found a really effective way that you could burn the fat by eating whenever you want. I do this by simply eating VEGAN!

Meat and dairy is a huge contribution to gaining weight, as well as refined sugars. Trust me, I am not some animal activist (although i do love animals). I am not saying don't eat meat. Maybe once a month, because THAT IS ALL YOUR BODY NEEDS. Screw the food pyramid. I read a book called the "China Study" and a doctor proved that you could die from the food pyramid. Fatty and oily foods clog your arteries, big time. If you want to put a few extra years in your life, avoid fast food at all costs. Instead use a PLANT BASED DIET. A plant based diet gives you all the nutrience you need. Can't do it? Need your twinkies? Well, you dont NEED it. You only WANT it.

Here is most people's problem: they buy a box of chocolates, put it in their pantries, and eat the whole thing in two days, because when it is available, its edible. So, DONT BUY FOODS THAT YOULL MUNCH ON! Instead, buy greens and fruits, lots of them. Don't buy any carbs, sugars, etc. Then, they wont be available to snack on.

Carbs are okay, but avoid white breads, and try to avoid carbs as much as possible. For breakfast instead of cereal, I usually eat fruit. The rest of the day: LOTS OF GREENS. If you want your fatty fix, eat Almonds or any kind of nuts.

So, I hope you get my point: eat as much as you want, as healthy and as GREEN BASED as you can without starving yourself. DO LOTS OF CARDIO TOO!

Im a male model myself and and to some of the people who left comments about it being a typical crash diet or what not it really is not, its a way of maintaining certain measurements that are required to fit the clothing designers use in their shows (samples).

my diet is as follows (keep in mind im 6'1 weigh 168lbs in the mornings 32"waist)

8am: 1 green tea before gym
8.30am - 10.00 am gym
10.30 am - 1/4cup egg whites with fat free cheese scrambled, 1 whole orange
1.30pm - 1 chicken breast and salad
4.30pm - some kind of protein (chicken, tuna, turkey, fish) and basmati rice
7.30pm - soup and fat free yogurt

I also drink aproximately 3L of water a day.

Its just important to get rid of the excesses such as salt, oil, sugar etc. Think about it: fish and chicken and everything else you eat has natural levels of sodium and fats that your body needs, anything that you're adding ontop of that is unnecessary and not needed it will deter you from your goals.

ALSO, just to touch on this subject: A LOT of models that many would consider anorexic or what not simply have fast metabolisms and are just born that way. I am not saying that some do infact have these disorders however to umbrella them all into this category is unfair.

Many people do not know how hard it is to stay a certain way physically and not have control over what you look like or what its like to be on set for 12hrs a day shooting all the while communicating with your agent about castings for the next day an setting up shoots and go see's for the day after... my days start at 8am and rarely end before 11.

theres some food for thought!

I too am a professional model and while I think that most people's diets are absolutely glutinous, the truth is that most/all working models have eating disorders and/or do drugs to be thin. It's the truth and people who deny it are just plain lying, that's all there is to it.

If you eat right and exercise (what a revelation) you can be thin and look great, but you will never be "model thin" naturally or through healthy means.

People have become obsessed with being unhealthy thin and I would love to not have to adhere to such stringent ideals. Think twice when you compliment the pole thin girl because you're probably only fueling her disorder. And when you see the girl in the magazine, be sure that food is on her mind 24/7, holding her prisoner.

A personal story for you. My brother's father-in-law only took vitamins. He never ate. After two weeks, they had to pump his stomach because the pills weren't dissolving. Vitamins are good for you, but you have to eat.

Most people's idea of a workout is a walk around the block. A workout need to get your heart pumping. Let's say you eat 2000 calories a day. In order to loose weight, you to burn 2001 calories.

And drink a lot of water. Not so much that you get overhydrated, but always keep some with you. Try to cut out sodas. If you can't (like me =[), drink 2 cups of water for every cup of soda.

Why are telling this model that she is eating too little? It is her life. Just worry about yourself.

Honestly, this is a BIT exaggerated. I'm from Australia and over here models are required to be a size 8-10. I'm a 6. I eat perfectly healthily AND I eat a lot. I'm not a model, wayyyyy too short (5'4'')and heavy...I guess (115 pounds) but that's what the trend is in modeling then you've got to suck it up and lose the weight. They don't eat so little because they enjoy it - they eat so little because they want to keep their jobs. ANn think about it, if they REALLY had such a problem with it, they'd quit. Maybe people should start worrying about other issues in the fashion world like drugs and s***. The bottomline is if you want to be a model...then you have got to be that thin. While it is true that it is SO not attractive, thats the requirement. Like, I'm training to be an athlete and if there are any girls from where I am who are training and theyre overweight or too skinny...they go nowhere. You gotta be muscly and fit to be an athlete...its a requirement for success. It's the same thing for modeling.

Oh and this is my average meal a day! I'm vegetarian...so yeah.

Breakfast: 5:30am- 1 glass of milk
Small bowl of oats
Small fruit salad
Snack: 8:30am- A small packet of chips or a small chocolate bar

Brunch: 11:00am- Some nuts / dried fruits
1 glass Freshly squeezed OJ
Corn Muffin

Lunch: 1:00pm- 2 wholegrain sandwiches
Apple
Salad

Afternoon Snack: 3:30pm- Vegetable Soup
Celery/ Carrot Sticks

Dinner: 5:30pm- Pasta
Steamed Vegetables w/ a little wild rice

And thats it!
