Special K Protein Water

specialk20.jpg

Towards the end of last year - a whole line of Kellogg's "protein-enhanced" foods started appearing on shelves. The growth of the beverage industry never ceases to amaze me.

Kellogg's K20 water contains just 5 grams of protein in a 16oz bottle. Along with that you get 8 grams of sugar (plus some Splenda) - all for $1.50 per drink.

A BusinessWeek column called it "a case of brand extension greed" - and I think they are right. According to Promo Magazine: "The line will be positioned as nutritious "shape management" tools, targeting consumers interested in weight loss."

Kellogg's have even included the drink in the "Special K Challenge" promotions - claiming that "Losing 6 pounds in 2 weeks just got easier".

Special K20 Ingredients
Water, contains two percent or less of sugar, whey protein isolate, citric acid, phosphoric acid, natural flavor (contains soy), calcium lactate, calcium gluconate, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, yellow #5.

Are consumers really that gullible? Anyone ever heard of milk?

I just tried this water as a part of a free sample, and I usually drink plain water or diet soda. I hate all flavor water I have tried. So I was skeptical but found the mixed berry to be quite delicious. I think it's a great idea as a snack for the middle of the day when you're busy and need something to hold you over for a while. I will definitely buy some of the powder mix on my next Kroger trip!

Cody,
you need to do some serious research on your statements about protien and glucose and such. Maybe you should seek out some endocrinologists and ask them how protien breaks down in the body and why people with type 1 diabetes can eat protien without it affecting their blood sugar?????? I second that people as a whole do NOT eat too much protien....where are you getting your information?

I haven't tried this "protein water" yet, considering I'm just a regular water person and that's all I drink. I do drink coffee, usually once in the morning, or a little orange juice. Anything like soda or fake juices actually makes me sick. I'm also a vegetarian. I have been eating Special K Cereal for about two weeks now, only because I love it. I'm not trying to lose weight. I'm 17 and about 5'5" and 110lbs. I'm starting to become kind of a health nut, though. Is Special K Cereal healthy?. Is there stuff in it that's actually bad?. I don't really trust anything anymore. I was looking at the cereal in my pantry and Captain Crunch with berries is actually 10-20 less calories than Special K.

And I thought whole milk was supposed to be good for you. I guess not?. I'm so confused...

Hi Sierra,
I'm not a nutritionist or anything, so feel free to take/leave my comments, but in answer to your question, I'd say this: I just looked at the nutrition facts in Special K, and it looks pretty low in Fiber, which is what you want in any bread/carb you eat. I would suggest something like All Bran, Oatmeal, or a Kashi cereal (go lean or something like that) - they may be a bit higher in sugar, but since you're 17 and not trying to lose weight, that should be ok. Special K is high in protein, but so is Kashi Go Lean. Also, I personally think whole milk is fine for you, especially if you're active. You may want to switch at some point to 1%, but unless you're drinking a lot of milk every day, i think it's fine.

SPECIAL K IS MADE OF RICE LIKE CORN FLAKES ARE MADE OF CORN. IT IS A GOOD PART OF A NUTRITIONAL DIET BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE EATING IT AND NOTHING ELSE. THAT IS WHERE THE UNHEALTHY PART LIES. ALSO IF YOU ARE NOT IN GRADE SCHOOL YOUR BODY REALLY DOES NOT NEED THE EXTRA FAT FOUND IN WHOLE MILK. SKIM WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU. THOSE WORRIED ABOUT CARB AND SUGARS IN MILK SHOULD CHECK OUT HOOD BRAND LOW CARB MILKS. TASTE GREAT AND HEALTHIER, OR EVEN SOY MILKS??

I think most of you need to do some research. Brent is totally right. I have recently started a high protien diet and it works great. In a month I've lost 20 lbs. Technically, protien in a "negative" calorie food. It requires as much energy as it proiveds as it take to digest the protien. The trick is lowering your carbs. I was doing some research on this protein water before I went and bought it and found this blog. For women a reccomended 120 grams of protein daily. To that, 5 grams is a small amount but can definatly assist a soda drinker in a diet. With it only having 6 carbs, I think it's a great alternative. To someone trying to loose more that a few pounds, go with something not so comercial. Try a nutrionist or a dietion and maybe some EXERCISE! Good luck to everyone. Dieting is difficult task.

I hate drinking plain water and I am always hungry. I started using the mixes in a 1 liter bottle of water everyday. Not only have I increased my water intake, the protein water does take the curve off my hunger. I am a college student and eating right is hard. The protein water make it much easier to cut my intake in half as recommended by my doctor. I have lost 30 pounds in 2 1/2 months by replacing my pop intake with this water and my candy/cake/sugar intake with a slim fast meal bar.

I think this water is good just to enhance the nutrition in your diet, without adding sugar or calories. It's certainly better for you than vitaminwater (talk about misleading marketing - it's all sugar!) - I think of it as a protein shake for girls. haha. anyway, i think it's a great product, and if it gets people to drink more water and not fill up on crap food, I'm all for it.

I hear so much grumbling about this drink from people that never tried it. I have one of these on the go in the morning and I'm much, much less hungry all day. The point of the drink is not to provide missing protein, but to reduce hunger and that's exactly what it does, it works great!

Can you lose weight if you drink this and eat the special k cereal everyday?

I think I just might have to try some of those packets.
I already drink tons of water when I can and why not throw some protein (and flavor) in there from time to time?

If you're looking for a fun, conveniant way to drink enough water, Wal-Mart (yes, I'm dropping a name) sells these huge jugs with handles. They are a half-gallon and come in a few different colors. I got green! lol They even have a sports cap so it's really handy. It's also a great way to keep tabs on whether or not you've had enough water for the day- I've discovered about two bottles is plenty. Another plus? All those runs to the bathroom ensure lots of handwashing, and some additional riddance of cold and flu germs running around.

For you two girls battling anorexia, I wish you the best with that. I've never battled it myself, but my thoughts are frequently with those like you. It's a real disorder that runs rampant in many young girls, no thanks to impossibly thin standards everywhere in the media. Just keep in mind those standards are just that: IMPOSSIBLE. Some day you'll be healthy again (if you're not now) and realize what a wonderful thing a succulent steak can be.

I love this drink! I use it on the run and at home. Plus, I don't always have fresh milk handy for some protein. At least this stuff doesn't expire quickly like milk does!! Way to go Special K! And it tastes great!

This product is not THAT bad for you. Cereal will do more damage to your diet, because of the high glycemic index of the ingredients. Also, milk can be a problem from some people- it really causes problems for some people with issues like asthma and exzema. I would go for this product if it had more protein. Wish it had about 20 grams.

PS- using this to help you increase your water intake is not awesome because it includes sugar. Your body uses water to digest sugar, so not all of that water will be available to your body for hydration or other uses. BUT it's better than nothing, and I drink iced tea with sweetener like it's my job, so I certainly see the appeal!

Is it good for dieting though? I'm just starting the special K challenge and don't worry I won't be anorexic cuz I eat 24/7 XD But anyway I'm also 15 5"3 and I'm 126lbs. and I want to lose at least 20lbs. or so so I'll be in my more healthier range than 126lbs. so I was just wondering if drinking the protein drink is good. If it is then I'll be taking it to school with me starting next week...let me know ^-^ Thankyou~ Amy (Mimi)

That is because you did it for a year you dumbass.
I did it for 3 weeks and lost 2 jean sizes, and im 20! it is NOT an unhealthy diet as long as you are eating and getting the right nutrients you need. as in eating other meals. Seriously, grow up. Where the hell were your parents with this?
and you did NOT become anorexic if you were eating!! Anorexia is when there is an absence of eating, you clearly were eating. honestly...

The Powdered water disolves well in hot water. I make a bunch in a pitcher of hot water and the put it in the fridge. It turns out just as smooth as it is out of the bottle.

Sara? Hot water... really. I did that the first few times and it never disolved down, allways had these floaty things. Used cold water this time and it was great. I'm a big guy and i hate having to think about a "diet" what i can eat and i can't. this is week 2 and it's a no brainer. The most shocking thing is the "meal Bars" are very filling.

I am 65. I have a generally active lifestyle - walk a lot, work in the garden, tackle projects on our small ranch, and recently started an exercise- aerobics class. We typically eat healthy - salads every meal, fish twice a week, fruit, and so on. But I remain overweight (5'8" and 200 lbs). My Dr is not worried too much as he says I carry it well that a lot of it is muscle. Nevertheless, I want to get down to 180.
I saw the ads for this product and it seemed to make sense - protein and fiber - hummmmmmmmm? - both helpful for many reasons. Also, I have an addiction to Mtn Dew I can't seem to kick (lack discipline I guess) and I thought this would be a nice/better substitute.
So I bought some yesterday and found I really liked it. It is too soon to tell what the effect on weight will be. Today, I was interested in what others had to say about the product and found this site and see a number of negative posts.
Posts which contibute information regarding specific contents of the drink which may not be healthy are I guess helpful. Posts which put down others for being lazy, for not following a poster's preferred diet, for not just drinking water, and so on are just not helpful. They seem to be somewhat arrogant.
I will continue to try this out, and if it works and if no adverse consequences are experienced or documented by others I will likely continue using it. I do drink water with every meal, but I like to drink something with a bit of flavor from time to time. I am very interested in a healthy lifestyle, subscribe to nutrition newsletters, and on-line resources, and so on, but I think these days it is too easy to find fault with what may work for others.

I know this is the same comment, but it had mistakes in it, so I corrected it.

I have tried the drink packets and they really do curb your appetite quite nicely.
I used to eat the fruit and yogurt cereal a few years ago, and I loved it. Then I found out that it has HFCS in it, and then I decided it was yuck. I don't like putting so many unnatural ingredients in my body. The HFCS commercials are a big joke. They just made it because people aren't buying their products anymore. That is so pathetic. Plus, I have seen HFCS and regular Corn syrup in bottles, and it just looks revolting. Then I imagined them mixing it into the food and it makes me sick. In fact I feel nauseous just thinking about it. I mean honestly, what purpose does it serve? And if it is not bad for you, then why do some foods not contain it. There are plenty of natural sweeteners and preservatives out there.

I'm 14 and i'm on the special k diet. I'm was not fat and i was not really skinny, say avarage. Because it was the six weeks off, i kind of let my guard down of keeping healthy and put on a bit more weight. So i tried the special k diet. I have been on it for two weeks, (eating the cereal and the bars + slim fast drinks). The diet doesn't make you loose weight, but gets rid of your appitite once your on it for a few days. The diet is good as long as people remeber to have a little treat once in a while. If i manage to stay on the diet for a week i treat myself to a 5 peice chocoalte bar on the sunday. Or you could have one peice at the end of each day. I hope this helps.
