Brown Seaweed Reduces Abdominal Fat

Americans may eventually have a new tool to shrink growing waistlines. A Japanese preliminary study showed that the brown pigment in a type of seaweed, wakame, can help to reduce abdominal fat.

The study was done on rats, who lost 5 to 10 percent of their body weight through their abdomens. Scientists concluded it was the pigment fucoxanthin, which also stimulated a protein in their white adipose tissue (abdominal fat) to oxidize.

Brown seaweed such as wakame is consumed widely in Japan – it makes up about 10 percent of the average Japanese diet. Japan also has a much lower rate of obesity than America.

The findings could mean that someday we could take a pill every day or as needed to shrink our bellies. However, this would be at least five years away.

The idea sounds great, but remember, this was done on rodents, not people. More human studies are in the works.

In the meantime, being active and eating a healthy diet will help with abdominal fat.

I wrote about this on our blog a few weeks back, my main gripe was pills! Why must everything be made into a pill?
Miso soup, so I have been told is delicious and has a high content of fucoxanthin, funny how 'thin' is in the name!

I LIVED IN JAPAN FOR 2 YEARS MISO SOUP IS REALLY GOOD. I DID NOT SEE ANY HEAVY OR OBESE JAPANESE PEOPLE, THERE DIET IS STRICT WHICH IS FISH, FISH FISH! AND SOUPS AND LITE DESERTS, SMALL PORTIONS. I DID REALLY WELL WHEN I WAS THERE, I LOST ALOT OF WEIGHT AND KEPT IT OFF. IF YOU CAN STAND FISH, EAT LOTS OF IT WITH RICE AND ALSO SUSHI OR SASHIMI IS GOOD. ALWAYS REMEMBER SMALLER PORTIONS

The thought of eating seaweed does make me want to avoid eating. I guess if nothing else, the grossness factor would help to curb appetite.

Robert: Seaweed can be really good. My mom used to make a soup out of it that was superb. Dried seaweed, like you'd use for sushi, is tasty too. More on topic, I actually do recommend sea vegetation for weight loss, but mostly for the natural iodine.

Hi all!
In Va. the brown seaweed is the latest diet craze. The fucothin or fucoxathin is what people are taking. I just started, I have been doing the apple cider vinegar diet and lost 20 pounds, but hopefully the fucothin will help my metabolism even more.
