Is Gatorade Bad For You?

gatorade.jpg

Brian has asked if he can query the "hive mind". His question: Is Gatorade Bad For You?

I had a teacher in high school tell me that gatorade that comes from a bottle is actually too concentrated to properly re-hydrate a person and requires dilution. I love the drink for after a work out, so I was wondering if this is true or not.

Here's my take on sports or rehydration drinks.

Sports drinks such as Gatorade are good for getting you re-hydrated and energized if you are doing intense or long-duration exercise - especially if in a hot environment.

There are three words to take note of here: intense, duration and hot. If you are doing light exercise or doing nothing at all (couch-warming) - then Gatorade is a big waste of money. In this situation (and arguably in any typical workout) water is perfectly adequate.

Gatorade provides sodium and potassium. If you are sweating heavily you will lose these two minerals in your sweat. However - I believe you would need to be doing a serious amount of exercise (hours) before loss of these minerals will become a problem (this is a different story if diarrhea and vomiting are involved).

If you drink a whole bottle of Gatorade you are consuming about 56 grams of sugar -- this is not required in a normal sedentary lifestyle -- and in this situation it could be considered "bad" for you.

Gatorade Ingredients
water, sucrose syrup, glucose-fructose syrup, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, salt, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphate, ester gum, sucrose acetate isobutyrate, yellow 5

Gatorade Nutrition Facts
serving size: 8 fl oz; calories 50; total fat 0g; sodium 110mg; potassium 30mg; total carbs 14g; sugars 14g

Let's open this up for discussion.

In other words, unless you're doing really intense exercise, you won't really need the gatorade. It's not bad for you, just unnecessary when you're only doing light exercise. The more you sweat, the more electrolytes you lose. However, gatorade also contains a LOT of sugar. The things you lose are the K+ and Na+ ions, which gatorade deals with, but gatorade also contains too much simple carbohydrates in the form of sugar, which might not do too well on your stomach.

I agree that this product is good ONLY for highly intense, physically demanding and activity when this activity need to be maintained. Although it's main attraction is the replenishing of salt and potassium when this is done in hot environs. My recommendation is (for everyone) to take salt and pot. supplements daily, especially in the summer time and hotter months. Lack of these minerals creates headaches, fatigue, cramps and other symptoms that are commonly mis-diagnosed as other illness'. Different people require different amounts of each (ie. more pot. to salt ratio etc.) You should experiment with small doses of each until you find the balance that is right for you. A test to see if you need salt is to place a small amt. on the tip of your tongue, if the salt taste sweet in any way... you need it. Sport drinks have their place for athaletes I suppose, but my feeling is that the other ingredients nullify any pos. aspects. PROCESSED SUGARS ARE BAD....PERIOD. Also, a pinch if quality sea salt (NOT iodized salt) in water is much more beneficial in smaller doses.Everyone is diferent as far as how they metabolize what goes into their body so do some experimenting and find out what works best for you, but again PROCESSED SUGAR IS BAD!!!

This is true. I have been working out heavily over the last few weeks and noticed I am actually GAINING weight. I think to myself "why could this be"? What am I doing differently. I've been drinking LOADS of Gatorade. I have been trying to quit drinking soda, and I've been successful. But I was drinking DIET soda. No calories. Gatorade has 130 cal per bottle. I've been getting fatter because of Gatorade! From now on, I will only drink gatorade during workouts. If I'm doing nothing, I will drink diet soda or water. All that time I wasted trying to lose weight, because of Gatorade. It is delicious though.

I agree! A healthy unstressed person has no use for Gatorade.

However, if you are caring for someone who cant keep anything down, who is on the toilet constantly, Gatorade can not only make them feel much more comfortable, it can save their life!

You may have heard the expression that its possible to overdose on anything, including water.

Indeed, this is true! Wiki "water overdose".

This is usually only the case in drinking contests involving gallons of water, but it can also happen if someone is sick and dumping important fluids.

The body needs not only water, but also a very specific percentage of salts and sugars to function properly and maintain the nervous syetem. Drinking too much water, particularly when one is sick, can dilute what precious salts and sugars remain, resulting in a toxic situation!

For this reason, I urge anyone who is caring for someone who is dehydrated to give them an electrolye solution or sports drink.

Also, after seriously grueling excercise, Gatorade is a huge help! I think American football counts as grueling excersise.
fits this definition.

C. Iannello

I don't believe this to be true - I believe that the only benifit from drinking Gatorade is the electrolytes - other than that - ONLY water is a good thing to drink - Not even Vitaman-Water is that good for you with all the sugar in it.

Gatorade should be sued for false advertisement and corrupting the health of America.

I run 12 miles a week. I work hard and sweat hard. I purchase from the local livestock supply house a small packet of 'vitamins and electrolytes' It is in powder form. It only takes an 1/8 teaspoon to make a gallon. The stuff is very salty. Puts me right back on my feet.

After spending at least nine months in the Middle East, at nearly 140 degrees Fehrenheit in the shade, I became addicted to Gatorade. Granted, I was not "laboring" in the heat, I was definitely stricken with dehydration to the point that I had to receive medical attention, i.e. three bags of saline by drip. I admit, also, that I abhor water, so I was not getting my requirement of H2O by a long shot! My point here is that there is "something" highly addictive about Gatorade, and if I do not get mine, I may do things I might regret later. ;0 I am drinking it at this moment, and the most movement I am conducting is typing this note! (takes drink) I love Gatorade!!! Give me yours!!! NOW!!!

Gatorade is one of the worst drinks out there for people who aren't serious athletes, and even if you do intense training you should only drink the stuff during workouts. All you really need is a little salt in your food, plenty of water, and eat some bananas.

Hi,

I remember looking up the question of how much salt is needed while sweating in the heat. I did this a couple of years ago, and I recall reading that if it's near 100 degrees outside and you run for longer than an hour...you would NEED TO ADD SALT TO GATORADE to replenish what you are losing in sweat.

And, be careful taking potassium when doing any sweating, as potassium and salt are enemies. Potassium helps get rid of salt in the body.

This is what I uncovered. Feel free to brutally comment :)

All I know is that my son has a history of migraines (he's 10) and he started drinking gatorade in his lunch over the last 2 months. His headaches went from 3 last year to 10 this last month alone, along with the flu! I think there is a tremendous amount of MSG in this crap and that there should be a warning on the label that anyone that is allergic/sensitive to ANY amts. of MSG should not drink it! He's been in agony and was nearly ready to set him up for another MRI thinking he had a brain tumor. Stupid idiots at Gatorade need to revamp their label. It's not for kids, not for people that don't need it, and definitely not for those who are sensitive to MSG. Sodium everything in this dumb drink, and yes, it tastes like PEE!

Yes there is sugar in Gatorade it says so on the nutrition facts label on the bottle. Sugars 34g per bottle.

I keep reading how high levels of sodium in a diet are not good for you and we should all reduce our sodium intake. I can understand why athletes excersising for hours might need the electrolytes. But does the average gatorade user need this? Aren't they just adding unnecessary sodium to their diet???? Is it enough to be concerned about?

gatorade only has an effect on the body if the body has been exercising for more then 2hr, at that point your body is hitting the wall and the body is craving sodium and potassium aswell as water.
so for Gatorade to have a somewhat positive effect duration of exercise must be 2 hrs and upwards.

Okay, all of you guys stop worrying if it's bad for you. Read the side of the bottle and figure it out!

Hmmm, it has sugar, calories, and it's processed!

SO YES, IT'S BAD!!!

Reply
Karl

High fructose corn syrup is generally agreed upon as bad for you. I would prefer no artificial color..can't be good for anyone, ever. But when we sweat, we don't just loose sodium and potassium. But those are likely the cheapest electrolytes to put in a bottled drink by a manufacturer that is not interested in your health, but purely in it for the money. I think its Coke product. Educate yourself!

Gatorade is a Pepsi Co. product, Powerade is the coke equivalent.

Milk works better than any sports drink to rehydrate you after a good workout. Its even better do drink after working out than water.

Can drinking two 20 oz bottles of Gatorade a day for several days CAUSE diarrhea in someone who's inactive? I've been sick twice this month and am trying to figure out if it's something in my diet.

well i think gatorade is defintely for emergencies. otherwise, drink water, eat properly, you should be fine. you don't need those since excessive sugars are bad.

is gatorade better than pop? need an answer for a class

What grade are we going for in this class, Brianna?

"C" answer: No it isn't any better.

"A" answer: For the serious athlete while doing their sport, Gatorade is slightly better than "pop." but not much. It has some additional electrolytes, and available sugars.

Wow... Reading these comments was pretty f'ing hilarious, until it started getting sad and ridiculous. Everyone listen to Kyle, the one who's actually taking anatomy and phys... His comment is the only one that actually makes any f'ing sense. Too bad not everyone can pick up a book, read it, and understand it. One of my A&P professors and the former dean of my medical school created the formula for the rehydration packets used by UNICEF. And YES, it works just like Gatorade works, but depending on your body's needs, of course u may not need all of that sugar, or any of the electrolytes in the preparation to begin with, but if u need rehydration, it WILL f'ing rehydrate u, period!

My sister drinks Gatorade all the time now since she sprained her ankle a week ago. She has been drinking quite a bit of it and worried that she is addicted to it.
