Addicted to Reality TV

reality.jpg

Turn on the TV. Surf the channels. Almost everywhere you look -- there are shows about looking younger, looking fitter, looking thinner.

There are shows about getting better houses, better gardens, better kids. Even public libraries lend more self-help books than science books - a new trend over the last 10 years.

Ever wondered how much "reality" is in a reality show?

I'm a bit of a cynic with these shows. I wonder how many "takes" there are for each supposedly candid shot.

At the end of a "makeover" show you sometimes see people trying very hard to pretend how ecstatic they are with their new look. I can almost hear the producer pleading for more enthusiasm.

Check out Leanna's new blog. She has just started filming for a weight loss reality show "The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp" from Life Network.

We were already full by then, when they made some popcorn and got me to pour butter on it (Which I NEVER do) and then filmed us eating it while playing video games.

But wait there's more.

[...] the Trainer and Nutritionist burst in to "ambush" me, but unfortunately I'm not the jumpy type and I guess I didn't give enough of a reaction, and we had to do 3 takes.

It seems my cynicism is well-founded.

All the best Leanna.

UPDATE: It seems that Leanna's blog has been deleted.

Hmmmm....these shows are outrageous but the simple fact is that they keep making them because people keep watching them. I like my husband's (perhaps cynical) viewpoint: let's drop them on an island with no food or water and then film them with hidden cameras for a month. Now THAT would be a REALITY show!

They are all more scripted than fiction... Remember the people from Survivor saying they were taken to the Tribal Council in air-conditioned SUVs, and then told to smear some dirt on their faces to look like they'd walked there?

Lord of the flies? No happy endings there. Reply

Yeah, most of those shows are really scripted and that's why I'm pretty skeptical of how "real" they are. It really depends on the people you get in the show too...some people react the way the editors want and others don't. I have a feeling that I'm way too normal to ever be cast in a reality show.

What's "reality" when in their faces you have a camera being held by a cameraman, a mic operator, lighting, probably a director and just a little bit of prompting by the producers of the show. Not to mention all contestants are chosen for their "sensational" behaviour or ideals... pffft... think i'll just watch Gilligans Island and Fat Albert re-runs!

How can something be reality, when in its essence, it is staged?? I am really tired of all of these types of shows, please give me some realism otherwise I'm selling my TV!!!!

Looks like Leanna's blog was taken down.

Wonder why? ;-)

Hmm... I was just about to report on Leanna's blog too. I guess she didn't read the non-disclosure agreement very carefully. Her blog was certainly an eye-opener, even for someone as cynical as me.

I HATE reality TV. I miss the sitcoms like, Friends, Will and Grace, Sienfeld ( before the Black Tyrade thingy) Fraiser and Television that took ALOT of planning and thinking on an artistic level. The only show I have beef with is Dr.90210 about this plastic surgeon. All the other reality shows just showcase anorexic bodies to make us feel bad.

ehh....I just kinda stopped watching TV in general.
