Alli: OTC Xenical Gets FDA Approval

alli.jpgThe approval of Alli marks the first government-approved non-prescription diet pill. This new version of Xenical (Orlistat) is a reduced strength version (60mg) that can be sold over the counter.

Dr. Charles Ganley, FDA's director of nonprescription products, stressed that the drug is intended for use along with diet and exercise programs.

The drug will cost between $1 to $2 per day, and GlaxoSmithKline expect that 5-6 million Americans per year will buy the drug.

When taken with meals, orlistat blocks the absorption of about one-quarter of any fat consumed. That fat — about 150 to 200 calories worth — is passed out of the body in stools, which can be loose as a result. About half of patients in trials experienced gastrointestinal side effects.

UPDATE: Alli now available on-line from Drugstore w/free shipping: There are two options: Weight Loss Starter Pack (60 capsules), Weight Loss Starter Pack (90 capsules).

I apologize, the comment above did something odd with the poll link; the correct link is:
http://www.thelifeledger.com/2007/02/12/poll-will-you-take-alli/

I, for one, am not interested in crucifying anyone, or passing judgment on someone's choice to take or not take the drug. I'm simply curious what peoples' opinions are in general - I've done some math myself, and am pretty underimpressed with what this pill can do.

I did not insult you. I just asked why you thought this was proven help and dieting wasn't. I asked you a question because I was curious. I also didn't judge you or lecture you or anyone else. Call this a lecture now, but I think you are a bit too touchy when it comes to this subject, if you think this is an insult or "crucifying" people who want to take this drug:

Why do you think that this is "proven help", Dani, whereas just dieting isn't "proven help"?

It is not an argument either. It was a question, which is part of a discussion.

Back on topic. I think this drug may work better do to the placebo effect, or simply because if people are spending $60 a month on it, they may feel more motivated to diet and exercise as well so as not to waste the money.

(Cue dramatic movie music and deep voiced announcer guy) Coming this summer, an event so powerful it will have you lining up around the block: oily stools, flatulent, explosive diarrhea! Time Magazine says "It was so gripping I crapped myself," and Newsweek states, "it was so potent I almost fell of my seat." Coming to a public bathroom near you.

Sorry if it's crude, but it will be interesting to see overweight Americans taking Alli 30 minutes before eating a cheese pizza and then running to the toilet to stand in line with the others. On the upside, it might cut down on some boring presentations and long drawn out meetings. Seriously people, it is not worth the possible embarrassment and likely inconvenience to you and other to take this pill.

Wow, lots of interesting comments on here! I just wanted to say that if the FDA approves it, it can't be THAT bad for you- if you're not eating fat food all the time then apparently the side effects aren't as severe. So isn't that motivation to eat better right there? and sometimes all someone needs is a little motivation. I've tried diet and exercise for over 6 months and haven't lost a pound, anything that might work without damaging my body is worth a shot. It's not like I plan on being on this drug for years on end, but I think giving it a try isn't going to kill you. Some people in this forum are way too angry and judgmental of everyone. We should all just keep it cool and let everyone make their own decisions without getting bitter and mean about it. Anyways that's all I have to say! May everyone make the right choice!

Steph, if you've dieted and exercised for 6 months without losing a pound, you either have a serious health problem and should go to a doctor to have it diagnosed, or you are not doing the right diet. It is virtually impossible to not lose weight otherwise. If you find that with the same diet and exercise + Alli you are losing weight, that will just prove that your earlier diet had too much fat, and that is why you are losing weight now.

I'm not angry or judging you, BTW. I'm stating the facts here. If you can afford this drug, don't mind the side effects, and want to take it, and you are an adult, I think you should be free to take it. But this drug does not speed up metabolism, it just makes you poop 30% of the fat you eat out. If it is all you were lacking to lose weight, you could have had the same effect by eating 30% less fat in your diet.

I will be happy when Alli comes out. I use to take Xenical and it work well. I know that there are side effect. They just don't effect me the same as what they did on some of the other people I know that has taken the Xenical. I just haven't take it for some time because it was costing me $ 135 a month.
All diet pills effect everyone differently.

I took this and paid about $110 for a one month prescription. I am so happy they are going to sell otc, because I lost 10 lbs with just one prescription. If I had the extra $110, I'd pay for it now. I didn't take it 3 times per day, I only took it when I knew I was going to eat a big meal. I don't eat that much all day, so there was no need to take 3 times a day. I had no problems with anal leakage at all. Very few people reported problems with it, 1 in 70? Some people have very sensitive stomachs to begin with.

well everyone Im a true taker of the diet pill orlistat
I lost 80 pounds in one year..but I also watched what i ate most of the time and i walked 3 miles everyday rain or shine..It's not going to work by it's self..I also had a few accidents where I pooped myself..LOL not very fun ,,all i can say is im glad i was home when i did it .
the goal is in the brain not in the drug,,your brain works in funny ways, this pill is to help you eat better and continue that way even after you stop using the drug, people whom have no will power like myself went on this drug to help loose weight. and at first we think ''oh cool'' a pill to make us skinny.it does not work that way. mind over matter... if you eat a hotdog with out this pill you will be fine right? well if you eat a hotdog while on this pill you will poop yourself..so the pill helps those who want to help themselfs...I had no side affects..I felt very good walking the 3 miles a day and dropping 80 pounds..remember the pill is only helping you control what you eat..it does not loose the weight for you ,,you loose the weight for you ..by having wilpower, and determenation in wanting to do so . so all of you out there who are thinking of taking this ,,go for it...it works if you want it to work.....good luck!

I've taken Xenical before and loss weight from it. The side effects is what made me stop taking it. Going to work and constantly worrying about having an accident was too much for me. And no one here has spoken about the odor which is more unpleasant than normal. I like the drug, not the side effects. I will be first in line to take Alli because I like the fact you actually see the fat coming out. Your body absorbs the fats it needs and sends the unwanted fat on its way. Due to the fact that Alli will be given in smaller dosage I believe the side effects will be less. I now work from home more than I do an office, so that helps as well. I'm going to document every pound loss. I know we can't depend on a pill alone to loose weight, so I'm exercising and changing my eating habits as well. I look forward to this new drug and the fact that it's FDA approved means alot to me, because their are so many over-the-counter weight loss drugs that are not approved, this is the first one and it has been proven to work, without the rediculous "before" and "after" commercials.

I started using prescription xenical last year in conjunction with my Weight watchers diet.

I lost 55 lbs in three months. I'm male, 57 yrs old, and I can lose / gain weight very fast, but this was exceptional even for me.

The Xenical in prescription strength reduced fat ingested by 1/3rd, not 1/4th like the non-prescription version. I paid ALOT for it, and thus only took it when i was eating a meal that had some fat content.

With 1/3rd fat absorbtion youre talking over 300 calories removed from your system. On a less than 2,000 calorie a day diet thats potentially 15% calorie reduction. I credit Xenical with helping me lose this weight so quickly.

I had no gastric issues at all except ONE time. I went out to eat with business clients and had butter on my bread, and ordered fish that evidently had a butter based sauce. When I woke up in the morning I nearly slid out of the bed on an oil slick. It wasn't pretty, but you sure learn that lesson fast!

If you need help dieting, Xenical is effective and a good psychological support (you REALLY watch that fat intake with it!).

I have taken this drug before and let me just tell you, you will eat better or suffer so it is to help you eat better. Yes it is a tool. This a great thing and it is the safest drug out there. The oily mess is the worst of it so eat right and you won't have it. Enjoy!!!!!

The right hand has hope, the left hand has critisizms. The main point several of you are so rudely overlooking is... Obesity and Morbid Obesity are not just "bad habits" and can be cured by someone being narrowminded and cruel by telling us to just "put down the food" and walk away from this problem.

Obesity is a disease. A deadly disease to millions. It is the same as an addiction. Ever tried to quit smoking, or drinking, or over achieving? Or know someone that has tried to quit a compulsive ordered disease? It's easier to put down a cigarette and stay away from smokers until you are weaned off of the things. But you have to eat every single day! You cannot quit eating, cold turkey, or with help. You will die. Do you know a recovering alcoholic? Would you try to tell one to quit drinking, and then only have 2 shots a day? Food and overeating is an addiction that can only be managed by behavior modification. If I knew what could happen if I go to the all you can eat Kentucky Fried Chicken bar, I might think twice before overeating the wrong foods. I would reprogram myself to making better choices.

I will finish my personal battle with this monster disease, in whatever manner I choose. I've gone from 323 lbs to 243 lbs, and I need a little more help to hone in my reprogramming skills so I can make a LIFELONG CHANGE. If you dont want to use it, thats fine too. I'd die for your right to choose. Just dont tell an obese person that you're just fat, and if you stop eating fat, you wont be fat. That is not a true statement.

In any event, please be kind to one another and let's support each other in our battle. If you can say to just put down the food and walk away.... I would question what your true reason is for being on this webiste to begin with! I need help to finish this, I would like to try Alli, and look forward to it's release.

Deb, I think that for people who actually face obesity, medication is a good choice. Surgery is a good choice. Anything to help the life-threatening condition.

However, the concern is that now that Alli is over the counter, people who want to lose 5 or 10lb are going to start taking it. People who are overweight always had access to this drug, through doctors. That is not what most of us here are criticizing. The problem is not with Orlistat - Xenical, it is with Alli, the OTC Orlistat. We are criticizing that a drug with such potential side effects is now going to be marketed to the masses as if it were aspirin. It is not aspirin, as you well know it.

Congratulations on losing the weight, you did a great job.

so if it just dosen't let your body absorb those few hundred calories how is it any different than taking laxatives? which are in turn cheaper and not as nearly a heated topic of debate...

Reply
Different Nic

Because laxatives don't prevent your body from absorbing anything. By the time the food gets to the stage in digestion where the laxatives act, your body has already absorbed it.
You might lose weight, but it'll be water weight.

Also, laxatives only cause problems if taken in higher dosages. This is something that can cause all day even in the prescribed dosage, and that is now available to people who don't even have any weight to lose for starters.

Well just to update...I've been on Xenical instead of the Alli for almost two weeks now. The side effects are still non existant. But the re-education I'm getting in what I put into my body is astounding. I am losing 1 - 2 lbs a day as long as I take a brisk walk and keep the fats to a minimum.

Good luck to anyone out here needing to lose weight. Just be careful, talk with your Dr and do what you need to do. But be serious about it. That's the best advice anyone can receive.

I am here to tell you that I am super excited that there will be an OTC version of this pill! I have been on It for ONLY 3 months, my insurance co. will not cover it so I pay out of pocket $336.00 a month,OUCH!. I started @ a size 20 & now I am a 14/15 jr. Key is to not look @ the scale, it will discourage you. What I've noticed is the inches & how clothes fit.
I take 3 120mg. caps. everyday & rarely do I have an "explosion of oraNGE FAT" you can feel your bowel movement comming so as soon as you do , hit the toilet! LOL

This pill has completely changed my eating habits , i do not crave candy, cake , sugar, salt, snacks or any fast food! It is truly amazing. Before I could'nt go a day without KFC, T.Bell or Mc.D's, now if i even pass by one I want to puke.

Bottom line is take as recomended & listen to your body & don't think well i'm taking this pill so I can have a "cheese steak w/ fries & a DIET COKE", you will have the aftermath on this one & it all boils down to "YOU" & what you choose to put in your body. If your serious about weight loss this is like a miracle & follow the rules & enjoy the results! :)
