Fiber One Oats and Chocolate Bar Review

fiberone.jpgIt seems like there's been quite a surge lately in the amount of “healthy” snacks like granola bars, protein bars, even cookies. A lot of these products have added fiber, which has been proven to be heart-healthy and reduce cholesterol.

The Fiber One brand makes some great cereals with plenty of fiber that are easy to eat. I have the plain Fiber One cereal every morning with my protein powder, which only has 60 calories and almost 15 grams of fiber.

So, I expected good things from their chewy oat bars.

The Taste
When I opened the package and took a bite, I noticed how good it tasted right away – sweet, chocolatey, and not too chewy. The oats are held together with something that tastes vaguely like honey, and there is a drizzle of milk chocolate over the top of the bar. It reminded me of other granola bars I'd had as a kid.

I couldn't really taste the fiber – it was more like eating a candy bar.

I ended up eating all 5 of these bars in one sitting, they were so addictive - which is why there's not a picture of them (the box got thrown out). Something about the taste made me crave them.

The Nutrition
The nutritional information was pretty much what I expected – 140 calories, 9 grams of fiber, but it also has 10 grams of sugar. I guess I should have been expecting that, given how sweet it was. But then I read the ingredient list – these bars contain high fructose corn syrup, as well as hydrogenated coconut oil!

What's healthy about that?

I see this bar as nothing but a glorified candy bar, and given the ingredients, I probably wouldn't eat them again. If you're more interested in good taste, these bars may be for you.

NOTE: This is NOT a paid product endorsement. In fact it's not an endorsement at all :-)

Why in the heck would you eat 5 fiber one bars??? First of all, if your not used to fiber, you simply can not eat that much of it without their being some major side effects. You have to ease into a fiberous diet in a healthy way, a little at a time. So start at maybe half of a bar, and work your way to one a day. Moderation is key. I don't know if it contains trans fat or not, but hydrogenated isn't a good thing, so like others have said, just eat them in moderation!

My doctor told me to eat more fiber because of other problems I've been having, which are bathroom private LOL.
I tried chomping on Benefiber chewables for a week as stated on bottle....nothing started "moving" along even with more water intake.
I ate one of the Chocolate Mocha Fiber One bars....it helped!! I work from home, so that helps, but I don't mind it. It's doing it's job and they taste great!

OMG! My husband had gas sooo bad from eating these bars that in the middle of the night, while he was snoring and asleep, one big long fart came seeping out without him even knowing. He had been doing them all night but I laughed my head off when he was sleeping and one came out. I too ate one and never in my life had so much gas! I will never buy these again.

Fiber One bars are my cure for constipation!

I am constipated due to IBS and medicines that I take. I often cannot go to the bathroom for a week. I ate 2 Fiber One bars (chocolate) because they were yummy. I have never had sooooo much gas. Later that day, I was able to go to the bathroom, not just once, but four times in a day. I'll have to buy some chicory root to see if that helps me too. After many years of seeing doctors, and taking medicines for IBS, I can't believe the solution was this easy.

I agree, these bars are sooo tasty. But they give you so much gas. I recently started back on my health kick of eating healthy and I bought these to savor my sweet tooth and to add my fiber in my diet. OMG! I'm already gassy but these things had me pooting all over the place. I had my sister running for her life because I was pooting so loud and long continously. The more I pooted the more I needed to poot. It was unreal. Now, I don't even mind having to blow off some poots but now my stomach hurts so bad. I had diarreah all day long. I thought I was going to faint on the toilet. Wuz up with these bars?

I experience a seismic reaction several hours after eating these bars. EPA has asked me to participate in the cap and trade program since I have started consuming these bars. I have also been contacted by the CIA, Florida Power and Gas, and the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals. These things should come with a warning label. "Warning, stay home for at least five hours after consuming one of these bars. Do not stand near any open flames and avoid and confined or poorly ventilated spaces." Scott B.

Where do you think gnu bars get their fiber?

In a word: inulin.

Inulin is naturally found in small amounts in vegetables and grains. It can be extracted from food, usually from chicory root.

I woke up last night to stomach pain, feeling incredibly bloated. I wondered what the hell was wrong with me. A couple of nuclear waste dumps occurred, then the gas hit. I honestly don't know how 2 bars that small are able to generate the volume of gas that has been blasting out from my sphincter every 3 or 4 minutes for the past day. You could run a car from NY to LA on this much gas...all generated from 2 bars. Forget the Chevy Volt...GM should have designed a Fiber One powered car. The doggone things are delicious but I'm not sure it is worth Satan taking over my GI tract for 6 hours to eat one. Well, actually, Satan would probably leave if he was here, the gas is so strong. Hell would be an improvement.

I unknowingly was suffering from inulin sensitivity and was ill for almost 6 months with no abatement of symptoms. I suffered for so long because I kept switching my foods to figure out what was the cause but, unknowingly, was just switching between brands that all contained Chicory root or inulin! I did not eat several bars in one sitting and ate fiber one, kashi, Quaker oats, and a yogurt that all had inulin in it (maybe one product per day). I am also a vegetarian with proper, high fiber diet (which my nutritionist totally approved of!) so this was not just my system getting used to fiber. Some people will always have discomfort (sometimes severe) and, according to my doctor and nutritionist (whom I was forced to consult after months of issues) this reaction will probably never subside for people like me. If symptoms don’t “wean away” within a couple weeks, don’t eat anything with inulin!

I think we should all keep complaining to these companies until they start highlighting these on the ingredients list and adding warnings. If I hadn’t gone to a nutritionist after MONTHS of issues, I may have never found out the cause! I thought I had Chrom’s disease or something. I even became anemic from all the related complications. I think this ingredient should be more strictly regulated. :-p
