Fiber One Oats and Chocolate Bar Review
It seems like there's been quite a surge lately in the amount of “healthy” snacks like granola bars, protein bars, even cookies. A lot of these products have added fiber, which has been proven to be heart-healthy and reduce cholesterol.
The Fiber One brand makes some great cereals with plenty of fiber that are easy to eat. I have the plain Fiber One cereal every morning with my protein powder, which only has 60 calories and almost 15 grams of fiber.
So, I expected good things from their chewy oat bars.
The Taste
When I opened the package and took a bite, I noticed how good it tasted right away – sweet, chocolatey, and not too chewy. The oats are held together with something that tastes vaguely like honey, and there is a drizzle of milk chocolate over the top of the bar. It reminded me of other granola bars I'd had as a kid.
I couldn't really taste the fiber – it was more like eating a candy bar.
I ended up eating all 5 of these bars in one sitting, they were so addictive - which is why there's not a picture of them (the box got thrown out). Something about the taste made me crave them.
The Nutrition
The nutritional information was pretty much what I expected – 140 calories, 9 grams of fiber, but it also has 10 grams of sugar. I guess I should have been expecting that, given how sweet it was. But then I read the ingredient list – these bars contain high fructose corn syrup, as well as hydrogenated coconut oil!
What's healthy about that?
I see this bar as nothing but a glorified candy bar, and given the ingredients, I probably wouldn't eat them again. If you're more interested in good taste, these bars may be for you.
NOTE: This is NOT a paid product endorsement. In fact it's not an endorsement at all :-)
I'm a big fan of the Fiber One bar!
ReplyI have had horrible pains, cramps, bloating and gas for 3 months now. I thought something was really wrong with me - last week it suddenly occured to me that I have been eating these bars since that time as a snack or for breakfast (no more than 1 per day...and 3 or 4 times per week). I tried not eating them this week and I am FINE now. All discomfort is gone. I just decided to look up the bars online today, and feel extremely validated by the other posts I've read. I will never eat these again!!
ReplyI absolutely love these! The taste is awesome and replaces my addiction to choc bars.
But these are FIBER BARS people - they are NOT harmless lil "snacks"! I eat one a day and have been doing so for past year roughly. NO bad effects, no gas or smelliness. It will make you go pooh roughly 2 hours after eating one so prepare yourself and certainly don't have them in the AM if you have to work with people around you!! LOL
Best way to start them is take 1 bar at night before bed. You'll get the benefits WITHOUT the effects. Definitely not something you want to eat 5 per day of!!! Good luck everyone!
ReplyAlso it might make a difference that I'm a vegetarian for past 20 years and I ALWAYS drink 8+ cups of water per day. So my body is used to processing fiber-rich foods and washing them away.
If you are used to a heavy MEAT diet, most likely you WILL start with some issues bc the fiber is cleaning out that gross, stinky dead meat which is rotting in your bowels - much like a 'whisk broom' doing its job. Of course rotting meat IS smelly. But don't blame the fiber bar - blame your diet!
ReplyGreat taste. Lots of fiber. Only complaint is they go through your intestines like a torpedo. Rumble, rumble, rumble!
Reply9 Am this morning my sister ate a delicious Carmel and Oats Fiber One bar, and 2 hours post ingestion we began to notice a very consistent stench within her vicinity. Once we acknowledged that she was the culprit of the horrific stench, she was not afraid to hold back. She was shameless in claiming the many loud farts. I heard the word "safety" over 100 times while we were sitting on our shared bed (which i am not sleeping in tonight). She felt the smell lingering around her all day and she showered twice in a four hour period. Upon arriving to work she texted me saying... "omg i just had the worst diarrhea. i am suing the Fiber One company. i shit you not (no pun intended)." We were all very curious off teh updates over teh course of today. We made sure to inform teh entire family about her reoccurring flatulence. My mom diagnosed her with some far-fetched stomach disease but after introducing her to the real truth (this website), she is well aware of their effects and will not be tempted to indulge in them before any social interaction....
ReplyWe are awaiting her return currently, but We foresee her not attending school tomorrow to prevent any very unfortunate and devastating situations.
Holy Cow! I've never tooted for 30 seconds straight before so, this has been quite amusing, but I don't think I will partake of another! Is there a warning on the box?
ReplyOh no! I just bought these at BJ's and gobbled one up when I got home. I went online to check the WW point value and stumbled across this thread. I usually read the ingredients before purchasing things, but didn't today; I guess I just trusted the brand and the name of the product...big mistake. I knew these bars were good because I had tried a sample of one last week. During that time I had experienced horrible flatulance, but attributed it to the stir-fry I had for dinner. But then I wondered why it lasted for two days. I resorted to taking Gas-X and am not sure it helped so much. My husband and I have dinner plans tonight with some friends and I am now FREAKING OUT in fear that I'll be dealing with that feeling again. I think we should alert General Mills about this product, as well as our family and friends! Thanks for this thread! It has solved a big mystery...now where is that Gas-X?
ReplyThey are tasty, but they tear up my insides. They're going back to the store.
ReplyI found these at my local Dollar General store and I really liked them at first. I needed something to snack on at work in the morning that would hold me over until lunch. I thought they were really tasty but OMG the gas was so bad. I thought I was going to have to take personal time to leave work early.
ReplyOmg!I knew it wasnt just me!I tried these chocolate chip Fiber 1 bars and thought they tasted way too good but the gas pains were unbearable.I only farted a little but instead unbelievable gas pressure! That was awhile ago. Then earlier today i tried a peanut chocolate Kashi Go Lean bar.Just didnt think to look at the ingredient list at first and not long after i felt those same pains! The culprit chicory root!
ReplyWow you all need to get over the gas. They are good and good for you.....you are making comments that give way too much information....we don't need to know your stomach issues. Get over it.
ReplyI think this is hilarious. I've been reading these for and hour and crying from laughter. My boyfriend has digestive issues so I bought these for him and we both tried them and we BOTH had horrible gas. So we stopped eating them and I ran out of snacks for our kids lunch pails so I gave my 10 yr old daughter a fiber one choc bar and yesterday she came home from school to tell me that she farted all day and when she got home she yelled "fire in the hole!" and ran to the bathroom. I will not buy them again but you have to admit this is all pretty damn funny ; )
ReplyHoly Crap and I mean HOLY CRAP. I was having some constipation issues and my mother suggested the Fiber One Bars. Not liking many "good for you" foods I tried the chocolate flavored ones. I cannot stop farting and I crapped my pants at work during a meeting. I did not get up in time and evacuated my bowels in the blink of an eye - talk about Embarrassing! In this economy I can't lose my job over a fart. Never TRUST a FART!
ReplyCan i just tell you i have been crying all day from reading this yes fiber one bars give you gas dont eat them unless you enjoy having stomach pain! you can get fiber in different ways and its not the fiber that give you gas it has whey protein in them which is probably the culprit.
ReplyOK, so it is the Fiber One bars. I've been eating them for a few days, and this morning, for the first time ever, I woke myself up farting.
ReplyI eat oatmeal 2 or 3 times a week for breakfast and never had a problem with gas. So how come I get the painful gas with the Fiber One bars?
And Oatmeal has one other plus. Uhhh, lets just say the next morning you can tell you had oatmeal the day before. But again, that doesn't happen with the fiber one bars. I was starting to think the 'Fiber' came from cardboard or something that didn't 'move stuff along'. Isn't that one of the main points in eating your daily allowance of fiber?
Why eat fiber one bars if you get all the benefits from oatmeal and none of them from the F.O.bar?
ReplyI had to take these away from my girlfriend who is on weight watchers. She ate only one a day, but had the worst gas. She would be miserable all night, and in turn, make me miserable. They even made her poop her pance once.
ReplyI agree with a lot of you people. These Fiber One bars seriously do cause a profound amount of gas. I find myself squeezing my buttcheeks together at work when desperately trying to hold in my farts. Don't laugh..lol. It's SERIOUSLY bad. I even bought some Gas Ex and that doesn't even work the slightest bit. I've given up on taking them and I just deal with the gas the best as I can. It sometimes helps me poop more often but it happens at the most inconvenient of times. Seems like the only time I have to take a crap is when I am at work and CAN'T. I'm sorry but our bathroom is literally right next to our breakroom. It's all echoey too (that's probably not a word I know). So i'm not gonna risk farting loudly and crapping at work in front of co-workers. Anyways, yeah I just deal with the "shit"....Oh well....My family can't even put up with this gas honestly. They say they can smell my farts all day long. I am creating pollution in my own home cause of these yummy bars!
Replyevery time i eat a fiber one bar, i have SEVERE gas for hours afterwards. It sucks because they are so delicious, but seriously, it's embarrasing. Also, I literally just pooped in my pants right now as I am writing this. If it weren't for my dedication to this opinion being written, I would have wiped a couple minutes ago. Awwww
ReplyWow this is funny... I'm one of the hundreds currently creating a Dutch oven at 11pm because I ate a FO bar at 3 this afternoon. This is terrible. I feel so gassy and bloated I can't stop letting them go! I will never eat a fiber one bar again in my life. How long does the gas last?
ReplyThe Surgeon General should have a warning on the front of the box that reads: "Has been to known to cause public humiliation".
I have never farted so much in my life! 17 seconds doesn't sound like a long time... except when you're farting for 17 seconds straight.
You know its bad when the cockroaches are climbing out of the walls and laying on their backs with their feet up in the air.
ReplyMOVE OVER EX-LAX!
Boy, I ate a few of these for the first time on vacation and man...what a nightmare. They are delicious but so not worth the gas and bloating! On the up side, when my daughter had constipation problems, I gave her one of these and they worked like magic! Too bad they couldn't solve the problem because I'd eat one every day.
ReplyWow! Talk about GAS! I had to leave my office early one day because I was so uncomfortable..... and we'll, those around me were quite uncomfortable too.
I threw the remaining bars out.
Terrible, terrible product!
ReplyThe Phantom Farter
As I sit here suffering during the few minutes between running to the bathroom with my stomach diarreha I feel so much better laughing at all of your comments. I think I passed a couple of giraffes myself LOL. This message board really made me feel better. The chocolate oat bar is what I ate. I've had this problem with them since I started eating them. General Mills is going to have some serious health issue problems with the public. I really hope no one winds up really hurt from these bars.
ReplyI'm relieved to know that it's not just me with the awful gas. I've never been so embarrassed in public restrooms in my life. It sounded like Jeff Daniels in the Dumb and Dumber scene...and it went on for a long time (last time I ripped them off for a half hour straight in the ladies room). I've never experienced anything that traumatic in my life...hilarious, but traumatic. Also, not easy to explain when you're supposed to be in a meeting, but know you'll be in too much pain trying to hold it...or could blow at any time and risk humiliating yourself in front of peers and clients. Deeeelicious bars (the chocolate ones), but so not worth the agony. My poor body can't take it. I've tried lot's of fiber options before, but this was the pits.
ReplyI am dying laughing right now at everyone's gassy stories. My family is so sick of hearing "it's the fiber.." everytime I let one rip. It's so funny I can't stop laughing. Still love the FO bars!!!
ReplyHOLY FREAKIN JEBUS!! Are these people for real?!? Last friday i actually scared the guy out of the stall next to me in the bathroom. Let me be clear. He was taking an actual dump with actual poop involved and MY 15 minute long fart-fest cause HIM to start gagging and leave. For the first 5 minutes he politely ignored the human whoopie cushion next to him. for the second 5 minutes he even laughed a little. But by the end - i could tell we was really struggling for air. He muttered something rude and left!
THESE BARS SHOULD BE CARRY A WARNING LABEL!!
ReplyEXAMPLE: BEWARE
I had 3 of these yesterday around 4pm and I haven't stopped shitting since. About 8 times to be exact!
ReplyThank God I found this blog - I thought I was going to DIE with the screaming sh*ts after eating these yummy bars for the past few mornings. Never put 2+2 together.... Today I finally noticed the chicory root extract ingredient and started looking if my explosive gas could be associated with this..sure enough!!! I bought a big box of these at Costco, tomorrow I am going to put them in the break room at work...they'll be gone before 9 am...and I'll guarantee the joint won't be fit for human habitation by 2 pm...that will teach the goody monsters LOL!!!
ReplyI read an article that chicory root is going to be added to more and more products, like yogurt. So, if you experienced the same side effects that I had (including, but not limited to, public embarrassment and humiliation, painful and awful smelling gas) then I HIGHLY SUGGEST you start reading the ingredients list on food before you buy it!
I found out Clif bars also had chicory root, which also explains why I always had gas after I ate them.
ReplyI love Fiber One bars! They help me to stay regular, and I eat them everyday. However, it is recommended to increase your fiber intake GRADUALLY, or else you're in for quite a bit of bloating and gas... which is what happened to me after eating a low-fiber diet for awhile.
My only complaint is that they're high in sugar and contain high fructose syrup. But as long as you exercise everyday, drink plenty of water, and don't eat a whole box in one go, I think it'll be fine. Fiber One muffins are also delicious and easy to make. :)
Oh, and I found bars that are stronger than Fiber One. Special K Fiber Plus bars. I ate one and within an hour, my intestines felt like they were having a party down there. They taste kinda like Snickers bars but are not recommended if you're about to go out in public... 0_0
ReplyI only eat Fiber One bars if I know my husband is going to be out that evening. The odor they produce is not sexy. I actually thought our fire alarm was going to go off tonight after I "let it rip".
ReplyI have been eating the fart bars occasionally for a few months. I remember my first one; scrumptious, yet healthy tasting. I realized immediately that these were no ordinary bars, that my body was changing, preparing for something. I found out what approximately 3 hours post consumption. I've been hooked ever since.
You should be courteous and not use them at work. Also, don't offer them to your coworkers as regular breakfast bars or snacks.
Remember, like with any other recreational drug you must use it in moderation and control yourself.
ReplyOH MY TRIP #10 to the toilet! The (one) bar was delicious- I ate it up. Then within an hour it started. I keep having to go to the bathroom....no wonder a co worker put them in the breakroom to share, must have been rejects. WATCH OUT!!!
ReplyI ate two boxes in one sitting. My new name is Fartzilla.
ReplyApparently I'm not the only weirdo googling "fiber 1 bars and bloating", hahaha. Probably not the most productive way to spend a Saturday afternoon! I think this is seriously hillarious, never did I think I would come across a thread with over 200 comments graphically describing the effects of these oh-so-yummy...but oh-so-dangerous bars. I bought a large box of these bars because they looked good and seemed sort-of healthy...and I snack at work occasionally so I thought this might be a good option...oh was I wrong!
I ate one bar..ONE. And I have never had problems eating fibrous foods before in my life, there is no way it can be the fiber content. To make a long story short, I work in an office, like most people probably do and it was absolute torture for about 5 hours. I ate the bar as a morning snack around 10am. I was perfectly fine, ate lunch around 1 and by 2 or so I was nearly doubled over by the bloating. My co-workers probably thought I had some serious issues because I kept making trips to the bathroom, only to let out the loudest, longest farts I have ever ripped in my life. I had no idea my body was even capable of this! Seriously embarrassing. Anywho, I could hardly concentrate on my work because I was so pre-occupied on trying to keep the farts held in (because I knew how loud and earth-shattering they would be if I let loose). Let's just say that by 5 PM I was never more ready to get out of work. I had to keep the windows rolled down the whole way home from work because I seriously thought I was going to pass-out at the wheel...these farts are deadly! Thank GOD no one was around to witness this.
I really thought it was the lunch I ate until I started thinking about the bar...the lunch I ate was nothing out of the ordinary...baked chicken and rice, which I had for dinner the night before with no issues. I therefore decided to google the bars and, viola, now I know! NEVER AGAIN. I literally have a bar sitting right here next to me but decided to google it before I ate it. Good thing I did!
Now what to do with the left over box of bars?? I could throw them away but that seems like a waste...but I honestly wouldn't wish this kind of pain on anyone! Anyone have some creative suggestions? LOL
ReplyHahaha, I was over at a friends house and I was starving, so he had me try these things. I ate one and it was SO good, so I ate like 5. Went to sleep and literally woke up farting. No breaks between either. You know when you've got one loadin' up and gettin' ready to blast? The second you let one rip, the next one is already comin'. These would be successful as a prank novelty if more people knew. NOTE: If you try and hold them back, you'll only get stomach pain. Freakin' hilarious.
ReplyOh thank goodness im not alone! I ate two the other day and was so bloted and gassy i couldnt believe it. But i also had alot of other food that day so i thought i would test it today. So i ate another two, and here i am googeling side effects because im so uncomfortable and embarrassed with how much gas i have. LOL, im so glad im not alone, I wont eat another one ever! Good luck to you all
ReplyGAS, GAS, GAS! That is all this bar seemed to give me. I ate the bar every morning for breakfast and underwent painful afternoons/evenings of stomach rumblings and gas explosions (sorry for the TMI). I would not recommend this to anyone who does not like feeling gassy/bloated. After I stopped eating the bars my body felt normal again. No more Fiber One bars for me!!!
ReplyI agree totally. Same thing happened to me. I am writing a long letter to this company and telling them what I think of theses stupid bars.
ReplyFOR EVERYONE ELSE, DRINK LOTS OF WATER AND IT WONT BE SO BAD! That's what is bothering you! That much fiber can cause discomfort but as long as you drink plenty of water it will promote regularity and aid in digestion, minus the pain.
ReplyI purchased the Walmart brand of Fiber One bars 4 days ago "Market Pantry fiber bars) and have had one a day. I don't eat cholcolate, white flour, white rice, white potatoes, or (most of the time) white sugar. I thought these bars would be a good source of fiber, despite the sugars, if I was in a hurry. Four days later I had to sit down and figure out what I was eating that was causing me so much distress! The only new addition to my diet was this fiber bar. I checked the ingredients and then googled 'chicory root, gas' and found this website. I don't care how good for you something may be or not be,... if it causes the body this much distress it can't be good. I'm sure everyone will not have the same reaction but for those that do... beware! I had so much cramping and explosive gas that at one point I could not walk or take a deep breath! I even had my husband go buy some Gas-X and it didn't help! I thought I was having heart problems or something along that line. It may not literally be poison but it's POISON TO ME!!!
