Fiber One Oats and Chocolate Bar Review

fiberone.jpgIt seems like there's been quite a surge lately in the amount of “healthy” snacks like granola bars, protein bars, even cookies. A lot of these products have added fiber, which has been proven to be heart-healthy and reduce cholesterol.

The Fiber One brand makes some great cereals with plenty of fiber that are easy to eat. I have the plain Fiber One cereal every morning with my protein powder, which only has 60 calories and almost 15 grams of fiber.

So, I expected good things from their chewy oat bars.

The Taste
When I opened the package and took a bite, I noticed how good it tasted right away – sweet, chocolatey, and not too chewy. The oats are held together with something that tastes vaguely like honey, and there is a drizzle of milk chocolate over the top of the bar. It reminded me of other granola bars I'd had as a kid.

I couldn't really taste the fiber – it was more like eating a candy bar.

I ended up eating all 5 of these bars in one sitting, they were so addictive - which is why there's not a picture of them (the box got thrown out). Something about the taste made me crave them.

The Nutrition
The nutritional information was pretty much what I expected – 140 calories, 9 grams of fiber, but it also has 10 grams of sugar. I guess I should have been expecting that, given how sweet it was. But then I read the ingredient list – these bars contain high fructose corn syrup, as well as hydrogenated coconut oil!

What's healthy about that?

I see this bar as nothing but a glorified candy bar, and given the ingredients, I probably wouldn't eat them again. If you're more interested in good taste, these bars may be for you.

NOTE: This is NOT a paid product endorsement. In fact it's not an endorsement at all :-)

I tried the Fiber One bars specifically for the fiber because regularity is a problem for me. One of these a day fit the bill (starting within just a couple days). Then I started looking around for a bar that was healthier and found the Gnu bars (with more fiber than the FO). After two months of one-a-day and another month of two-a-day, I'm going back to the Fiber One.

This is in no way an endorsement, just a note that everyone's body is different and sometimes you just need to go with what works for you.

As to HFCS, HO and transfat, it sucks that they're in the FO, but I can cut that stuff out of other parts of my diet. I can't find anything else that'll keep me regular.

Sorry for the gross factor.

I just tried these for the first time this week. I loved the taste, but have also experienced GI distress.
I hate to give them up because I really hate all that powdered fiber stuff.

I think that if you eat five of these things you deserve to fart your brains out. You should show some ret=straint and just eat one a day.

Folks this is what fiber does. It makes you pass gas. The food doesn't sit in your gut - it passes right through you. Dr. Oz, Oprah show, states everyone needs to pass gas at least 17 times a day.

I'd rather have that crap out of me than to sit there for days.

You Rock Amber! I work in the medical field and we recomend these bars to individuals that are overweight as a periodic treat when a sweet craving hits. I personally find this item to be stellar. It is a great sized portion for the calorie intake. And folks worried about the ingreidients calm down. All of the ingredients are FDA approved. Chicory is a neat plant grown and processed in our region. We sometimes put it in cookies and often put it in the ground coffee to perk. Hope you all keep and open mind and dont gorge on these they arent intended to be consumed by the boxful, nothing is!!!

I love the Fiber One bars but the gas made me very uncomfortable at work. I've started enjoying them as my dessert after dinner and everything is working out just fine.

I have to add my comments on Fiber 1...I love these bars, they are so tasty and have a relatively low amount of calories. The gas, on the other hand, is apocolyptic. I had 4 bars one day and while asleep, I apparently created a rather magnificent Dutch Oven. I know this, because my wife woke up a few minutes later and screamed, "...oh my gawd..." and ran out the room. I think she may have vomited after she ran downstairs. She didn't speak to me for 5 days. I have never had this reaction to flatus in the past, sometimes bad, but never catastrophic. Kudos to Fiber 1. I have had thoughts of suggesting this as an alternative means to power my car, they can certainly heat up a room!

Stay away from these bars. I've had gasto-testinal problems ever since I began eating them.

Oh my stars...i just googled to see if anybody had gas and bloating problems from these delicious Fiber One bars. I guess I found my problem. I am at work right now and so uncomfortable with bloating gas I can hardly move. My daughter and I both had horendous gas the past 2 days and the Fiber One bar is what we both had in common...so I suspected. I guess I've found the culprit. A shame because I, too, just bought a whole bunch of them from Sam's Club and think they are delicious. Not worth the painful gas though.

Like Lisa on 01/07/08, I googled to see if anyone else has had the same problem as me with the bloating and the gas experienced after eating a Fiber One bar. I generally only eat one at a sitting, and still experience the problems above. I gave my husband and one of our sons a run for the money in the "farting" department one day. I couldn't determine what my problem was until I ate a Fiber One bar the next day. I don't think I am willing to give the bars up yet, however I know now that I cannot eat them for breakfast or lunch. A nighttime snack will work out well for me.

It's so nice to know I am not alone. I love these bars but the gas is really bad........ It only takes one of these bars to cause the gas that everyone is talking about. I can't imagine what would happen If I ate more than one a day. I think I may try eating 1/2 at a time to see if it minimizes the problem.
If not, I may have to quit buying them, because my husband and my daughter think I have a really bad problem. I gave one to my brother & warned him ahead of time, but to my surprise he said it didn't do anything to him. At least now I know I am not the only one having this problem.

I have been eating a high fiber diet for the past 6 months after watching Dr. Oz one day. Every type of food I can find that touts high fiber, extra fiber, double fiber, and I'll try it. These Fiber One bars are the ONLY one that not only increased gas but to catastrophic , room clearing, paint peeling, jeans scorching levels that I've never imagined possible. Darn shame because they are soooo tasty.

body needs,or the fact that it forms a gel like substance that keeps our intestines in tip top shape. yeah yeah, i know i said a lot here. short answer: these fiber one bars are really good for you because they have the best form of soluble fiber(FOS). on average, we don't eat enough soluble fiber and we especially don't get enough of FOS. yes, it produces a lot of gas, mainly a problem for the first few times. but, you're creating a better bacterial environment in your colon. really short answer: fiber one bars taste great, are an excellent source of soluble fiber, and annoying as it may be, all that gas is actually good for you too![...]

Thanks for the info! I have seen a zillion comments about the farts and stench...but none so informative. It is so strange to me that they are good for you and yet your body produces such a foul by product after ingesting them. Why do the farts stink so badly and why are they so hot? Can the farts be tamed? Is there any other way to get the right amount of fiber (and good fiber at that) without these farts? I've been eating these fiber bars (1-2 a day) for 3 weeks. I'm now known as the "Stinky Girl" at work. lol What if I took Beano and a Fiber One Bar at the same time? I bet I'd explode.

Right, but with fiber one bars you fart 17 times in a 5 minute time span...and they are not "normal" farts that you can "sometimes" disguise. They are LOUD STINKY BOMBS that creep up and land in terrible places. Pre-FiberOne, I was cool with the radom farts throughout the day. These however, are not random.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one getting gas from these Fiber One bars. I'm going to have to make these an evening snack because I'm sitting here uncomfortable at work from the one I had this morning. I do have a question, though. The reason I like these bars so much is they're tasty, they hold me for awhile, and they're easy to eat at work. Does anybody have a suggestion for something else healthy I can eat for breakfast that does the something, but without the gas?

For thoes complaining about bloating and gas after trying these bars, this is NORMAL anytime you increase your fiber intake. Once your body adjusts, it goes away. Just increase in increments. I started out eating one bar a day, and after a few weeks, I have one in the morning and one late afternoon. This covers my fiber deficient diet, and the rest of my diet pretty much covers.

Wow. I have to agree with everyone. The gas this bar gives you is bewildering. and it lasts all day. Its not just the fiber increase, because I've eaten 2 or 3 gnu bars in one day and felt fine (they have 12g of fiber versus 9). I've also been trying everything fiber these days but nothing is like fiber one with the gas symptoms. They're really good though. But I think you can find better options, that are more natural too ( corn syrup = baaad!)

Okay, I am crying as I'm laughing so hard. I registered just to be able to comment on this topic. I , too, finally decided to do a google search under "fiber and gas" as I can barely stand to be in my own presence. I have been eating these fiber bars, which are very good and are filling. But, I have had the stinkiest and loudest gas that I'm now officially the stinky girl. And, not like I can rip it up at work, only to leave me bloated all day. What's the point to eat these things if my clothes are getting tighter due to this bloating ya know? A bummer because they are indeed good but not worth the awful stink bombs they give. Now I know the cause and can go back to a normal life. Those of you that do not have this problem, consider yourself lucky. I owe my boyfriend and dog an apology. Now I know I deserved those mean looks!

The high fiber content in the Fiber One bars does not cause the gas and cramping.

I have a cup of Fiber One cereal every morning (28 grams of fiber) and have zero gas or cramping.

Made the mistake of eating 2 Fiber One bars one evening and then 2 more (good Gaud) for breakfast the next day. By noon, I was doubled open in pain from cramps.

I thought either my appendix or my gallbladder had failed, lol.

I bought the Fiber one bars for first time at Publix on a buy one get one free sale, and enjoy the bars, but agree that the gqas is continuous and unbearable! Even when I eat one bar and drink water, even if i am alone I don't want to feel that. I also have increased my fiber intake since joining Weight Watchers 4 years ago, and not other single product has affected me this way. Even when I "overdose" on fiber, i.e., oatmeal for breakfast, salad and fruit for lunch and veggies for dinner, the natral combination of natural fiber does not affect me this way.

My understanding was that hydrogenated fats were different from trans fats in their chemical arrangement. Hydrogenated fat is a broad term for fats that have hydrogen added to them, which can be in the cis or trans form. A fat can be hydrogenated totally (saturated fat) or it can be partially hydrogenated (trans fat).Although neither is good, they are not equivalent.

Also, there is not one food or food source that will make you healthy or unhealthy. Anything in excess is bad for you. The goal is to have a balanced diet. So if you have a Fiber One bar for breakfast as opposed to other unhealthy choices out there that contain saturated fat, you are actually making a good choice. Or if you have a Fiber One bar and balance it out with fruits and veggies..that is not bad at all. Moderation and balance is the key to a healthy diet. But I can understand why people would try to attack one food source as being bad because it is easier than trying to make a balance of all of the food groups, which include fat.

Hope this helps.

I bought these a few days ago. The first day I tried them, I thought they tasted fantastic. I ate one before lunch, and then _two_ that afternoon. As the afternoon went on, I thought I was gonna damn near die from the gas. Even GasX couldn't slow it down. I gave all the others away... only to hear from my fellow employees how the bars did the same thing to them!!

Hi Michelle, it's always nice to have a fair look at a product but I can tell you , these bars are indeed the culprit. The ingredient "chickery root" at least is the problem. It's the first ingredient listed therefore the main ingredient. I stopped eating them (only one a day, not excess at all) and my problem is gone. I say find fiber other ways as this bar causes more problem than good.

I will never eat one of these again. I ate one a day for the last two days and I feel like I am going to explode. I farted about 300 times today. It's is not worth it!

Personally, I love the Fiber One bars because I feel like I am getting something sweet with the added bonus that they seem to be "cleaning out my system." Infact, since I have started started to eat one at breakfast and one after supper, I pretty much stay in the bathroom just after eating something. Surely, I should be losing some weight. :-)

I purchased my Fiber One bars from Amazon.com...they're on sale this month 03/08. I have been regularly eating them in the morning for breakfast. Just before I started eating these, I had kicked my Diet Coke habit and increased my water intake. I've had slight bloating and gas issues, but I haven't had stinky gas...only gas that I'm able to disguise. I've given them to my husband, too (he has digestive issues) and he's been regular for the past two weeks. He's even lost his gut because he's not getting backed up like he used to. The benefits definatly outweigh the costs for us, but neither of us seem to be suceptible to the type of gas that most people here are experiencing.

These have been a God-send to me because my tastebuds are so sensitive to that chalky fiber bar / protein bar taste, and my husband and I are so busy in the mornings that a bowl of cereal just doesn't work! Also, sometimes I'll have these as a snack, and they will tide me over all afternoon. I've been able to cut back on my portions for lunch because I haven't been getting so hungry before or after this meal. You must try them (maybe on a long weekend) and see how they react with your system before you write them off.

I too am sitting at work praying no one comes over to my desk because I am full of rancid gas.
This posting has been helpful and hilarious, you all have a talent for expressing the pain and embarassment caused by intense gas.
I actually could not figure out why I have been so gassy the past two days, until I, like many before me, googled the bar, but not to find out if gas was a common problem, but rather to find our how much fiber a bar contains (the box is at home and I am at work adding to a food log) And then I stumbled across these comments and a lightbulb went off.

Has eating them as dessert, instead of as a breakfast bar really helped?

And yes, I understand that gas and bowel movements are healthy, no I am not eating more than one a day, and yes I understand that fiber increases gas.

But people who have posted before are not being dramatic, it is a chair-burning experience.

No one has mentioned the BestLifeDiet seal of approval. I may be mistaken, but it doesn't get that if it has trans fats. I enjoy one for breakfast when I'm in a hurry. Better than skipping.

I have been reading these comments about "fart bars", which my wife and I also call them. I've been laughing continuously. I feel sorry for those who have really suffered, but otherwise, it's a great "blast". I have to mention that my dog is actually afraid of the "rumble" created by a good fart. So...when I eat one and she's sitting in my lap, she will frequently have to jump up and run across the room to my wife. She looks back at me as if I did it on purpose. She just doesn't understand, no matter how many times I explain intestinal bacteria and soluble fiber. :)

My daughter calls these boo-boo bars! She asked me why I ate them and I tried to explain it the best way that I could to a four year old. She deduced that it made you go "boo-boo", so she tells her friends, "my mommy eats boo-boo bars"! LMAO

I agree with everyone on this page, the bars will give you horrible gas! However, I have found that the more I eat them, the less gas I get. Maybe once your body gets used to the fiber, the gas goes away??? Who knows!

I too, along with a couple of friends have had all the same problems, if you want to call them that. I have reduced eating them to 1/3 - 1/2 of a bar a day and it works great. If I eat a whole bar look out. I'll be going to the bathroom 3 or 4 times within 8 hours. We love the taste of the bars and they are a lot better for you than a candy bar or chips. These are great bars to keep you regular as long at you eat them responsibly.

I am look at the ingredients right now and can NOT find the Shellac or Ethanol anywhere. Maybe I have already gone blind. Can someone point these out to me? Maybe they use a different name.

I am a freshman in high school, and the other day, my mom bought these fiber one bars. And i was excited after i tasted one, because they were delicious and filled you up. That was on a Sunday. Then Monday rolls around, and i'm packing my lunch for school and i put in a fiber one bar. About 10 minutes after i eat my lunch at school, my stomach starts hurting really really bad, and i had no clue what was going on. I knew that i had some gas, but i've never had it where it was painful before! I mean, i can't really fart in the middle of my classes, so for two days i was writhing in pain after lunch until i told my mom and she said it was all the fiber!!

So, i love them, but too much of it isn't good--at all.

These bars are great!! I've gone through and read all the comments and I do agree with the gas concerns. However, I've been eating these bars for months now and I don't have a problem with that anymore.
On another note, I don't remember who it was on the first page that posted about using splenda in a recipe...after all the bad stuff you have to say about the FO Bars, you go and encourage someone to use splenda!? I suggest you google it and find out just how bad a "sugar" (made from 3 parts bleach and one part sugar molecule) is for you. Talk about cramps, bloating, and gas...try some splenda.

Hmmmm...

I've been eating these bars since they came out and never had any problem with gas. The only problem I've ever had was when I grabbed two for lunch because I was hungry and in a hurry--then it just gave me really loose stools.

Why would some people have such problems and not others?

OMG, these bars are SATAN! I ate one at 11AM on Sunday. By 2PM, I was extremely gaseous with diarreah until 9PM. I thought I had a flu bug. Well, today/Monday, I ate one at 2PM, and at 5PM the fireworks started again. Needless to say, I have been stuck in my hotel room, and have the worst stomach pain ever. I had a colonoscopy last week, and these bars are ten times worse than that crap they make you drink the day before the test. I don't know what is in these bars that are making me miserable, but General Mills is to blame. WTF?!

Isaiah, you need to eat more chicory root (it is a sedative). It is obvious that your information came directly from Wikipedia. That was the only site I found that mentioned anything bad from a health perspective. And, you mis quated them. The article states that "Long-term use of chicory as a coffee substitute (Root chicory - Cichorium intybus var. sativum) has been shown to damage human retinal tissue, with dimming of vision over time and other long term effects."

Here is a site that promotes the health benefits of chicory: www.regaininghealthnaturally.com/Herb_Information/chicory-root.htm

So, what have we learned here people? We have learned that just because it is on the internet does not mean it is fact and that you MUST believe it. Do your own research. Make up your own mind and live in peace.

Good health to you (whether your eat the bars or not).
