Essensis: The Beauty Yogurt

danone.jpgFunctional foods are set to become the next "big thing".

French Dairy company Danone are about to release a yogurt as a cosmetic product.

The new yogurt - called Essensis will be marketed across parts of Europe.

[Danone] says the yogurt will improve the health of the skin of people who eat it for at least a month, by using certain ingredients — including borage oil, vitamin E and antioxidants from green tea — to "feed the cells" of the surface layer of the skin. (La Times - subscription)

Danone is expecting 100 million euros (US$129 million) in sales from Essensis, which will be available in three flavors, including raspberry-grenadine.

The Danone Group is the parent company of a number of brands including Evian water, Dannon (US) and Stonyfield. They are well know for their Activia range of probiotic yogurts.

I hadn't heard that. That's interesting.

I've written some articles and even included information in my book about the health effects of foods. Not manufactured foods like this one where the intent is to add ingredients to produce a health effect... but just ordinary foods.

I've found that certain foods can seem to help you with medical conditions. There are studies that have been done, but no one really knows for sure.

It'll be interesting to see if this works. I'm always skeptical of a manufacturer's claim because they clearly have money riding on the outcome.

But if Danone's claims are true, that would be wonderful.

I was going to start a series on my own blog about the health effects of foods. Would you mind if I link back to this article when I do? (I don't like to link without permission.)

Wow! Does it taste any good or is it just one of those health foods that taste like crap.

They have a beauty yogurt here in Brazil already. It has borage, aloe vera, and vitamin E, and yes, it tastes like crap, like after-sun skin gel from the aloe vera.

I just hope they don't create a graphic ad campaign when they release this green tea one here. They also have an anti-constipation yogurt and the ads where people go in detail about their improved bathroom visits and where they say if you buy 30 of these yogurts in a month and still can't go, you can write to them to get your money back are horrible.

LOL that's hilarious Jan. Engineered foods including fruits, eggs etc is definitely "vogue" but personally I like good old fashioned eating. If I eat something 'good for me' that tastes like crap it always makes me want to counterbalance it with something else so I usually end up eating more

A load of bunk, particularly considering Danone makes its yogurt from factory farmed milk...it's not organic, that's for sure. Yogurt can be a healthy way to get healthy bacteria into the gut, but it's a dairy product so my recommendation is buy organic skim. Forget overpriced fattening factory-farm sourced Danone.

Sigh...functional foods again. It's becoming such a trend in the food processing industry. Companies figure that if they add supplements to their stuff, people will buy it because it's "healthier". But, if it tastes like crap, no one will buy it anyway, so I don't really get the point. Regular old yogurt is good for you...it has natural Lactobacillus spp. that help digestion and can help clear up your skin by outgrowing the S. epidermidis you have on your skin...you don't need to add anything to it!

I am with you and I prefer plain yogurt above all. Even though there is one brand here that makes strawberry yogurt without too many weird ingredients (of course, a bit of red dye is inevitable), I don't think it tastes as good as plain does.

Actually this yogurt taste good! They have it here in Paris, around 2€ for a pack of four.

It tastes pretty good. I do have my doubts about it actually working. I don't think I'll be trying to for a whole month as it's a bit overpriced.

You can tell it has been well marketed, though. The packaging is bright pink and sparkly... A very sort of "look at me" and then "BUY ME" sort of thing. Obviously aimed at women...

I don't know if this works, but I like a lot the taste of raspberry-grenadine, the other two (peach & natural) aren't bad either. The price is a bit too high anyway...

It does taste very good! But it is really overpriced! 3 euros for a pack of 4 here in Italy... I just hope it is worth the try! ;)
