Bilk: Beer and Milk
A new drink goes is about to go on sale in Japan - it's called "Bilk" and combines a low-malt beer with milk.
The milk beer was created after concerns over all the wasted surplus milk. One-third of the drink is milk.
Since milk has a low boiling point, the brewery took care to control the temperature during the boiling process so the milk wouldn't boil over. After they put beer yeast and hops into the drink and began the fermentation process, the beverage looked and smelled like tea with milk. However, when fermentation was complete and the drink cooled down, it had the same color as beer.
A bottle costs 380 yen (about US$3.12).
"It's got a fruity taste, so it will probably go well with sweets as well," - said one taste tester (via JapanProbe)
Got Bilk?
More like this in Weird

Um, eww. Coffee + beer, yes. Oatmeal + beer, yes. Hell...pumpkin + beer, yes. Milk + beer = Vomit without going to the trouble of getting drunk.
ReplyOh that just sounds NASTY!
ReplyIt's an acquired taste! :-)
ReplyYou're talking about the same people who eat natto.
ReplyI prefer the optimist's view..it's 2/3s BEER! :-)
ReplyThat must taste weird!
ReplyThis is taking frankenfoods to a new level of WTF?
ReplyAs an occasional homebrewer, I think that actually this could be pretty tasty, in a general sense.
However, personally I'm not a big fan of milky drinks, I don't even take milk in my tea, so it's probably not a beer for me. I'd give it a try though.
ReplyOh the Japanese and their wacky food products... I don't like beer anyway, so I wouldn't drink it, but after natto, Green Tea Kit Kat, and chocolate-flavored cheese slices, it doesn't surprise me.
ReplyOk...that's just too weird!
ReplyUgh, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little...that sounds so gross. I like my beer pure and unadulterated, thank you :)
ReplyCalpis (sweetened carbonated milk) is a popular drink in Japan, and, recently, a popular mixer for alcoholic drinks, so this doesn't surprise me.
And--natto? Rocks.
ReplyWho knows...it might be good. Everyone keep saying milk + beer = yuck. The milk is fermented in the process of making the beer. This is not anywhere near the same as just pouring 2/3 of a glass of beer and filling the rest up with milk.
ReplyThere should be a version for babies; Bilk: beer and breast milk.
ReplyFavorite drinks of Sumo Wrestlers...and Americans!
Reply"There should be a version for babies; Bilk: beer and breast milk."
ReplyI'm afraid too many women have done this 'the old-fashioned way.'

eww beer and milk that is gross who would want to drink them at the same time!!!GROSS
ReplyI am sorry but this just sounds gross.
Replyits unecessary phlegm
ReplyHey, now we can get drunk and get our calcium. Sounds like a win-win situation to me! Haha, jk, i can't quite imagine the tast. Hell, i'm about to go mix up some bilk right now, I'll let you know how it goes...
ReplyOk, after making our own instant Bilk, 3 out of 4 people wish we never had. Maybe the real product brewed and fermented is better, but we do not recommend serving this at your next cocktail party.
-Sincerely,
ReplyA rowdy and thirsty super bowl crowd, drunker but wiser (GO COLTS!!!!)
On the road, I have a friend who loves "beer floats": beer with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. It looks repulsive, but I think he might actually like this Bilk...
ReplyHmmm....i'm curious to know if adding a sweet touch like vanilla ice cream would serve as better contrast between the taste of bitter beer. However, after our homemade bilk experience, I am not brave enough to test it out a beer float. :)
Replyugh....that....ugh....uh......um...yea......no.....ew.
ReplyWell, milk stouts and cream stouts have already existed for a while (and you wouldn't really know they're made with milk or cream), it's not really THAT new of a thing. It's just much MORE milk in a beer than there ever has been. Whatever.
People don't realize how many different ingredients can be brewed into beer. You can make beer out of just about anything, as long as you include water and yeast and some sort of malted grain... you don't even TECHNICALLY need hops, though you'd want to use something for bittering.
ReplyWell, after stuff like FIRED CHICKEN FLAVORED ICE CREAM I'm not all that wow'd. :D
Reply"...A bottle costs 380 yen (about US$3.12)"
Over 3 bucks a bottle???
YIKES! "Bilk" is right! LOL
ReplyCow blood + cow milk: Acceptable, healthy
Human blood + beer: For drunken cannibals only
Human brain + beer + alcohol: Cannibal favorite
Beer + milk: That's not delicious
Why do the Japanese think of crazy foods and crazy diets?
