Burger King Enjoys Fat Profits
Every time I think that fast food is on the decline - a new statistic proves me wrong. Burger King have experienced a massive 2nd Quarter profit gain of 41%.
Same store sales (outlets operating for more than a year) experienced growth of 4.4 percent in North America.
It seems people like eating at the 'King.
Growth drivers during the quarter included the company's BK Value Menu and its Xbox video game collection giveaway, in addition to a strong marketing campaign that includes creative television advertising. (via Forbes)
Burger King has taken a very clear stance on fast food - aiming for the high calorie stuff - with barely a nod in the direction of so-called "healthy options".
Why people eat there is beyond me.
The fact that 2 million people went there to get an Xbox game is one reason.

Ha, my brother in law got that Xbox game. He said it was the stupidest thing ever. I think the last time I ate at BK it was at the airport and there was nothing else to eat. I got a salad and picked off the cheese and only used half a dressing pack...it wasn't too bad. But they really do have one of the most limited healthy items lists out there.
ReplyI live in Newfoundland, Canada where there is only one Burger King. (there use to be two).
Not really sure if it has been on purpose or not but Burger King have done a good job of staying at in a category called "Treat".
Most people who are health concious do not mind going for a treat once a week and I think (could be wrong) most people would classify Burger King's Whopper as better than McDonalds.
So, they are managing to obtain a decent profit margin on their product.

ReplyI quit going to BK a long time ago, when they changed the formula for their fries. They coated them with something, and it made them all weird. I rarely go there now. When I do, I get the veggie burger. Did you even know they had one? It's a Gardenburger, prepared like a Whopper. Get it w/o mayo, and you have a salad between two buns.
As for their advertising gimmicks? That King just creeps me out. I change the channel when he comes on. But I love the new "I Am Man, Hear Me Roar" commercial. That one cracks me up. They are not pulling any punches, they don't try to "fancy up" or "slim down" their food - they are targeting the segment of the male community who is sick of 'diet food', and I can respect that. Doesn't make ME want to eat there, but I can respect their methods, at least with that one commercial.
ReplyWhen I was a fast food junkie, I loved LOVED Burger King. Still do in moments of weakness. However, I now boycott BK due to their advertising, especially their mantra that to eat like a man you have to eat enough saturated fat to kill yourself by the age of 40. Still, the advertising is effectively. I am waiting for next mass serial killer to sport a King mask, though.
ReplySpork Boy: Actually, there is some scientific basis to the role of meat and saturated fat in testosterone levels. When trying to gain muscle, my top priority in my diet is saturated fat; protein comes second. Still, I have no idea what kind of processes their meat and cheese go through. Plus, there are entire books written about how saturated fat isn't actually detrimental at all.
ReplyThanks, Ryan. I am aware of the roles of saturated fat in gaining muscle. But when a single meal gives me a weeks worth I tend to draw the line. I include plenty of lean red meat in my diet and pack away plenty of protein. A great book on the subject is The Testosterone Advantage Plan by Lou Schuler.
ReplySpork Boy: For gaining muscle, I find 30% protein, 60% fat, and 10% carbs is best. I try to make half of my fat intake saturated. The best book you can ever read on the subject is Unleashing the Wild Physique by Vince Gironda.
ReplyAt least they're going trans fat free. But still, it's not like it's that healthy to eat burgers and fries, even if they are made with different fats.
ReplyI believe this as I will eat burger king over mcdonalds any day.
ReplyI would never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever eat the fast food or non organic, chemical packed food EVER!
Replyi watched my husband eat a quad-burger last weekend. yes, that's right - 4 patties!! with cheese!! i hadn't gotten anything but i did get sick to my stomach watching him wolf that down! i am not drawn to fast food like he is but i can't go a week without a pizza. We all have our food vices....
ReplyOk well this is kinda off topic, but we're actually getting screwed over by this fast food nation as well. For instance, at Taco Bell, a large cup costs about $1.73...you know how much it costs the company, for the cup and the pop inside it as well altogether? A whopping 5 cents. Think about that before you slurp on that mountain dew straw again.
