Weight Loss Chewing Gum

Researchers have learned that a hormone called pancreatic polypeptide (PP) can reduce appetite by sending a signal of fullness.

The research team has been given a massive £2.2m to move their research to the next level - specifically chewing gum.

Chewing gum is a good idea because apparently "obese people like chewing". They are also looking at distributing the hormone via a nasal spray.

Early tests of the hormone (by injection) show that participants ate between 15%-25% less.

Don't get too excited:

"We would continue to recommend eating a healthy diet and doing regular physical activity as the first and best step to losing weight." via BBC.

What's it going to be called, Doublechin gum?

I don't know about this. I get cravings whether or not I'm full. I can't see how this or any other appetite suppressant is ultimately effective.

Who can forget jaw wiring?

I knew of a patient who declined surgery, but had her jaws "wired" shut like treating a broken jaw. She didn't keep her follow-up appointments and showed up 8 months later and 70 pounds thinner to get the wires taken off! This treatment is an option to surgery but should be done with orthodontic appliances since they would protect oral structures better. Obviously, I am not addressing the miriad of issues this type of treatment brings up, just adding a story.
When I first saw this, I thought it was about burning calories by chewing gum..add fidgeting to that and it has possibilities! :-)

Obese people like chewing? That's so awful. Couldn't they just put it in a pill?
This sounds like another fad to me.

With the rise of weight loss surgery, I can say jaw wiring is a good idea. At least it is not permanent. I'd go for that instead of weight loss surgery, if it were me. Then you can drink some Medifast type meal replacement shake and lose the weight. It is also probably the only way I'd survive on just Medifast shakes, if my jaw were wired shut, haha.

"Obese people like chewing"? Why, because they're big like cows? Geez, could they get any more insulting? This gum is totally not going to work for anything more than a minor placebo effect.

Although, I kind of think the jaw wiring idea is pretty dumb. It doesn't change behaviors; it just stops you from acting on them.

Yeah, me too. This product seems like it's just fighting against itself!

Same as the WLS does. It makes people vomit if they eat more than 1 ounce at a time. Both are dumb, but at least the jaw wiring is reversible.

Oops. I messed up and didn't add what I wanted to quote from your comment, which was the second paragraph.

I just started chewing gum in order to diet. I hope it works against my compulsive eating. And I workout too!
