Trans Fats Linked to Infertility?

fries-small.jpgNew research from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that consumption of trans fats may increase a woman's risk of infertility.

The research (see abstract) has the following conclusions:

  • Obtaining 2% of energy from trans fats rather than from mono-unsaturated fats was associated with a more than doubled risk of ovulatory infertility.
  • Each 2% increase in the intake of energy from trans unsaturated fats, as opposed to that from carbohydrates, was associated with a 73% greater risk of ovulatory infertility after adjustment for known and suspected risk factors for this condition.
These results are sobering - however not all agree.

Nutritionist Marion Nestle made these comments in a WebMD article:

"If you look at their raw data, it just didn't show an increase in risk," she says. "And even when the adjustments were made, the numbers were still very small."

Nestle says the only dietary factors proven to play a role in infertility are eating way too little and eating way too much. Infertility is common among women who starve themselves for long periods or who are very obese.

Lol, I don't think I would trust the words of a nutritionist who happens to have the same surname as a huge worldwide processed food brand (aghhhh, it's a conspiracy!!!). Seriously though, it wouldn't surprise me at all if trans-fats have a negative affect on fertility, they appear to be wreaking havoc on every other bodily function.

Big food is bigger than little foods. Big food makes you full, but lots of little food makes you a gay.

So just eating too little and too much, Ms. Nestle? What about all the million studies on caffeine's effect on fertility?

Look, Trans fats do more than infertility. Here's a following list of what Trans fats do to you:

Trans fats raises LDL cholesterol.
Trans fats lowers HDL cholesterol.
Trans fats raises LP-a levels.
Trans fats raises glycerides.
Trans fats reduces insulin sensitivity.
Trans fats causes kidney stones.
Trans fats causes organ failure.
Trans fats causes fatty liver disease.
Trans fats clogs up arteries.
Trans fats causes cancer.
Trans fats causes fat buildup in the muscle.
Trans fats wrecks up your brain, increasing the chance of Alztimers diseases.
Trans fats increases the chance of getting ALS.
Trans fats causes atherosclerosis.
Trans fats makes absorption of vitamins and nutrients difficult.
Trans fats scrapes out the beneficial omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Trans fats causes blindness.
Trans fats causes amputations.

Trans fats? Stay away from them. View them as skull and crossbones. Period, and that's all I have to say about this.

There's one exception: Consume the natural trans fat, Conjugated linoleic acid, found in clean animal products. Instead of trans fatty margarine (the conventional margarine), use butter, smart balance, or any other "margarines" that does not have any word "hydrogenated" on the ingredients. Don't be fooled by the "0-grams of Trans fats" label on the front. READ THE INGREDIENT! Don't pay attention to the nutritional panel to look for 0g Trans Fats. You need to look for the words "hydrogenated". If it does, than even though the trans fat content is 0g, put it back on the shelf. In other words, if the product contains hydrogenated oils, view it as "skull and crossbones", and put it back on the shelf, upside down and backwords. Show them that you want to boycott trans fatty foods.
