Vibration Training for Weight Loss?

vibration.jpgEvery morning on my way to work, I walk past a "vibration studio". A few weeks ago, another studio appeared just a hundred meters from my office. Vibration training machines have piqued my curiosity. Can a machine that vibrates actually provide some health or weight loss benefit?

At first I viewed these devices with some skepticism. There seems to be no shortage of marketing information - but very little in the way of real-world experience. I'm also concerned about the potential for injury - especially in the hands of an inexperienced trainer or operator.

Lloyd Shaw, on the Whole Body Vibration Training blog has broached the subject of weight loss and Whole Body Vibration. It is a complex subject - but with the number of training studios suddenly appearing - it's time to try and get some answers.

Apparently the more advanced machines offer enough resistance to ultimately lead to an increase in BMR:

The more advanced response would be true "activation" (an anaerobic response) which would cause micro-tears in the muscles, leading to the healing cycle resistance trainers try hard to induce.

This in turn has a hormonal effect causing your protein mass to increase which naturally raises your BMR. The aim of which is to burn more calories while resting.

It seems to me that the potential for fat-burning with a vibration training machine has to do with the "after-burn" - the energy that is burned after the session.

Has anyone had experience with Whole Body Vibration training?

"Has anyone had experience with Whole Body Vibration training?"

Yes, I have. Last year, I had an opportunity to experience it first hand. It seems useful for recovery purposes, for which it was originally designed.

As for cellulite reduction, increased fat burning, strength and athletic performance claims - I am very skeptical. I cannot say I have experienced any benefits.

I can see how an untrained individual may experience some temporary strength gains, because Power Plate may enhance exercise recovery.

Shades of the 60's. remember when they had those machines with the big belts you put around you and the machine vibrated and jiggled you all over the place? very retro!

If it was a Power-Plate unit you have used. It IS only a therapy machine. So those results would match. I dont bother with the lighter units , but I would recommend them to Physios.

When i first saw the vibrating platform i was not at all interested but having a massage business with virbrating products i took another look at it and a week later i had bought one for my bussines and we ae are having great results. I myself use the machine 3 times aweek combine with cardio and diet, in which iam havig great results my core strenth and flexabilty feel very different i feel this is a much faster way of getting results spending 20 minutes in a moer presonal place than going to the local gym for over a hour

Good luck to those who use this way to do their workout amd the massage at the end is great christine

I saw not too long ago in a mall I dont remember a vibrating sort of slight rocking seat machine with no back you just sit on and effortlessly signals your body to balance as you sit and watch television and burns fat around mid-section, I dont remember the name of it, If anyone has seen it, Please give me the name and number of the item, it seems Great! I will appreciate it.

Hi, I've heard about whole body vibration therapy and there are weight loss benefits such as the vibraslim or the turbosonic. If anybody has any testimonials, please post! Thanks.

Hi Jeri,
Vibration exercise research indicates that on its own it does not cause the body to burn many calories. So to achieve weight loss you should combine it with some form of cardio-vascular exercise and a sensible diet. In combination with this it can be a great part of a weight loss programme due to its effects on strength and flexibility.

I have been going to a Vibration Training Studio 3x week for three months now. When I started out I had serious back/side pain from a fall last year and also most days I had nerve pain radiating down my leg, from my back. I'd had lots of physio and seen an osteopath also with minimal results. I could not ever sleep on the painful side and I could not sit at computer or in car for long periods. Now I sleep easily on my left side. I have travelled 500 km and back home again without any pain, so that's amazing therapy results.

Strength and Flexibility: I do some long distance walking and a little running. I have loads of extra vitality and strength. It's just the mental effort of actually getting out and doing the practises that holds me back now. My balance is improved as body core is strengthened. Flexibility is hard to judge when I had no known problems but overall I'm not complaining about anything.

Weightloss: I was told that Vibration Training is only part of this as someone has already said. It does actually burn large numbers of calories as muscle fibres twitch in response to the vibration stimulii resulting in slightly increased temp in muscles and increased metabolic rate over the next day or so. This, I think, is dependant on using a good quality vibration platform in a studio and not a cheap home unit. The machines I use require me to remain in position on the machine for 60 seconds each and that can feel like a very long time but it's really worth the effort. There's no lazy way to lose weight. I have also watched my diet, making sure it was balanced (not low carbs or any other fad) but I've been to weddings and other functions and overeaten some days. Vibration Training is a type of resistance training and so I have also done some cardio work which for me is fairly low intensity, just walking 5-10km or light jogging or using exercycle or road bike for a short time. In three months I have lost 4kg which is a moderate, normal amount to lose in this time and could be done with diet control only. The difference is that i have not yo-yo'ed at all. The weight is gone!

I'm convinced Whole Body Vibration does work really well.. Depends only on making the effort to go and unfortunately for the consumer, it depends on finding a studio/brand that has quality machines

Hi Diane,

Its great to see the positive results you have seen by incorporating vibration exercise into your exercise and nutritional programme.

With respect to your comments on metabolism - It is a common misconception that vibration exercise has a significant effect on your resting metabolic rate. The immediate effect and long-term effects on your metabolism will be quite small (see my blog for a detailed explanation). In fact as you have lost weight over the last 3 months its quite possible that your resting metabolism has in dropped due to the effects of the calorie deficit on your metabolism.

I would suggest that your weight loss is likely attributable to the fact that the fitter you are, the more energetic you're likely to be in your daily life. One study found that three young men showed a significant increase in total daily energy expenditure after nine weeks of endurance training. These men had unaltered RMR, and the increased energy expenditure was put down to increased general physical activity.

So the positive strength effects of vibration exercise probibly increased your daily activity and combined with sensible eating and cardio exercise this lead to a calorie deficit rather than some direct effect of vibration exercise on your metabolism

I have been using my VibraSlim now for about 9 months and I have become a believer. Not only have I lost the 15 lbs I wanted to lose but my health and fitness increases have been dramatic. I started at a local vibration center on advice of my doctor and got hooked right away. I have got my friends on vibration exercise also and they love as much as me!

I purchased a Noblerex K1 unit from AestheticMD last week. I have used it daily for five days now and I love how I feel after using it. I realized after the third time the "feeling" was very much like after a strenuous workout on my treadmill or elliptical machine. This leads me to believe it generates a hormone response. Someone also asked today if I was doing anything different with my makeup or something - they thought my eyes or face looked "brighter."

I have not seen any weight loss yet. I purchased the unit for other reasons than weight loss so I will see how it goes. I'm more interested in the claims that the exercise aids lymphatic drainage and increases HGH secretion.

I like how I feel after a ten minute session so I guess that is worth something? We'll see how it goes....

I have been going to a spa where I was introduced to the Vibraslim. After my first 10 minutes on there, I felt amazing! I felt relaxed and energized. I noticed that later in the day, I felt really happy!

I decided to purchase a much cheaper home unit. The quality and effect so far is just not the same.

They referred this to us and we will be checking it out.

I believe in vibration exercise as it has helped not only myself but many of my friends and family. I use it for sprts training, but my parents use it to help stay fit and build bone mass. I use a oscillating machine made by Vibraslim. I have their VibraSlim Pro-Energy machine and it has been great for me.

You can see it at - http://www.myvibraslim.com

I have also been on a power Plate machine and it was pretty good also.

hey people

im an honours student in sourh africa doing research on power plate.

I have compared two groups of people.
one group doin just exercises on the power plate, the other doing a traditional resistance program with some cardio training.
the study lasted 6 weeks, and all that i can say is that traditional workouts in the gym has shown to be the best.

the gym group lost more fat mass, and their body fat% also decreased way more than the powerplate group.

maybe if you combine powerplate with a cardio workout it would render better results.

check check cheers guys

jaco, You should have done research on the type/category of exercise that Vibration Training is BEFORE doing your honours research. Your comparative study was doomed to failure before you even started: You allowed only Vibration Training (a form of training similar to but not quite the same as Resistance) for one group and you allowed two different types of training for the other group (Cardio and Resistance). Of course the gym group had better results.

Where did you get the idea that Vibration Training was ALL the exercise that anyone had to do? Oh maybe from Power-Plate's advertising? If so, they have misled you greatly but really you should have found out more info before you started your research and also why did you choose to use Power-Plate machine. There are other brands that give better results.

Hi, all. I have just become an owner of a vibration traning machine. I am obese and bought it to go with a colorie restricted diet in order to avoid gastric bypass surgery!! I have problems with thyroid and insulin resistance and have always found it hard to lose weight. On the other hand my hubby is as thin as a rake. However he sits behind a desk all day long.
According to my owners manual, you can use this machine for 1 - 3 times a day if you are normal weight and for 4 - 8 times a day if you are obese!!
BUT for not more than 5 - 20 min at a time.
So, Ive been doing it every day for 5 to 10 min at a time , 4 times a day. I FEEL GREAT! My backache is less, pains in my knees subsided and I do believe my seretonin levels rose, because my spirits have lifted dramatically. I feel especially good after a session!
My husband uses it once a day for 20 min. He sais he feels great and last night had backache and was not to sure to get on the mashine. I convinced him to go on and he was amased at how good his back felt afterward.
Now I am just awaiting the results of weight-loss. My goal is to get at a weight and strength where I can go out and do the walking thing and play with my kids. REALLY HOPE THIS DOES WORK! or it is onto the operating table for me!!

Hi just wondered how you are getting on. Did you end up having to have your operation in the end? I have recently bought a vibrating machine and I love how I feel afterwards. With a better diet and occasionally going to the gym I have nearly lost a stone in weight. I would also reccommend you try the wii-fit, they are really good for the tasks it sets you and for keeping a close eye on your progress as it measures your weight and BMI. I am looking at hopefully loosing another 2 stones before the summer months here.

Take care, Zoe

Hi Karen, I have the same problem as you. But I have however not bought a machine. Have you had any weight results with the machine yet?

Oh, yes I have to say I got to know about the mashine from my mom who goes for 10 min every day!!! Her shape has improved dramatically - without a weightloss diet. She even had to resise her pants!!
So, she converted me.
Thought you might want to know.

Unfortunatly ive purchased a machine for £2000 paying monthly. I'm now in my fourth month and have not lost much fat at all.

I realise now that your meant to exercise while using the machine. but the internet site i purchased it from said that you didn't need exercise and that the machine alone would be sufficient for fat loss.

So I had a bad experience.

Hi I find going to the gym, watching what I eat and using my vibrating machine work really well together. My BMI is going down and I have nearly lost a stone in weight. I recently also purchased the wii-fit which I would now be lost without it as well as my vibrating machine. They work well together and make exercising fun!!

I have had one try on this type of machine, I had a very painful knee at the time. I did not think about my knee when I tried this machine, 'Vibro Trainer', later I realised that my knee was ok. I really thought that I would have to take time of work to rest my knee ( I work in retail, hence I am on my legs all day long ). Considering I achieve this result in only one session of a few minutes. I am impressed and cannot wait for delivery of my very own machine. I like the way it feels when I am on it. I hope I can get some visiable, physical results - that would be so good.

Well so far, I have to say, no, no I have not lost weight.
Today is one month less a few days here and there.
However, on a more positive note. I have lost 2 cm off my waist line.
Looking forward to see if i will get other results.
Every one says - just give it time.

I presented a study at the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (now known as the Obesity Society)conference in October, 2005.
It demonstrated that 3 months of WBV training (3X per week)increased Resting Metabolic Rate by 12.6% in a group of obese females. Since RMR accounts for 60-75% of your total daily energy expenditure, this is quite significant. Very few calories are expended during a WBV exercise session, but an increased RMR can be very helpful to the weight management effort.

Hi, Im researching the Vibro Trainer sold in Australia at the moment and im not sure if its worth the $1800 price tag. I have a Europlate vibration fitness machine that we have been using for quite a while now. I noticed changes within two weeks, like my energy levels, flexibility and toning. It's funny but I have a much easier time putting on my socks now! :) Silly I know. I find my friends and neighbors are dropping by more often to say hi..... and use my vibration machine!! Anyways I love it!

I was using a vibrating exercise machine at my chiropractor and paying $35 a session 4 times a week. I was getting great results for my back and joint pain but it was costing me a small fortune. I decided to buy one for my home and save the money and I'm glad I did. There are alot of bad machines out there so do your research first. Many are cheap machines masquerading as good ones and being sold by scammers. Buy from a legitimate company and stay away from the multi level marketers and anything on ebay. Here is a useful guide I found: http://www.vibrationexercise.ca/vibration-exercise-machine-buyer-guide.htm

Externally the Crazy Fit and the Vibro Trainer look like they have been produced by the same factory in China.

Defence is that the Crazy Fit sells circa $AU500 whilst the Vibro Trainer is circa $AU2000.

I would be doing my due diligence to satisfy myself that the innards of the Vibro Trainer are not a mirror of the Crazy Fit and do justify the $1500 price difference. The Vibro Trainer literature I have are silent on the specifications.

I work at a place that does the Whole Body Vibration and we have a 100% success rate in INCH LOSS...As the machine is working 95% of the muscle fibers up to 0 time a second you wouldnt exactly expect to loose weight. This machine is very good in increasing energy, muscle, toning, firming, reducing cellulite, increasing serotonin levels and releasing endorphines. It aids in better sleep, circulation and over all well being. I recommend EVERYONE try the vibration machines, but make sure the platform you are standing on is a Oscillating platform!!..
I have been using the machine now 6 times a week 1 time a day for 3 months and i have lost 18 remarkable inches and all the cellulite in my bum and i just feel stronger all over. The ONLY thing this machine does not work is Cardio, so its still recommended you do your daily walks etc...

Until you try the machines you may be skeptical, as was I, i was a client before i started working with them and they are AWESOME.. GO TRY ONE TODAY!!!

Hi all
I have just purchased a vibration machine ($1400) on advice from the doctor. I have had severe depression and anxiety which has severely affected my serotonin levels. Excercising is painful (but so is being nearly 30kg overweight so my specialist suggested this, have done the research, asked fitness trainers and body builders and the common opinion is that this machine will halp the serotonin and used in conjunction with even light cardio on the tready will definatly help me avoid the lapband surgery later this year........wish me luck all !!! I'll post the results later :)

hi,

I purchased a vibration machine 8 weeks ago and kept a log of my progress. I'm 5'9, male, smoker, drinker and at the time of purchase I weighed 114kg.

During the first few weeks, using the the machine 4-8 times daily, I lost about 5 kg. Roughly a kilo a week, but it was hard to keep track via scales cause my weight was fluctating throughout the day, The fat came mostly off the legs and chest. I could actually see a rib not covered in fat. Bellyfat looked the roughly the same, not much change.

Around week 4, the weight stopped coming off, but the bodyshape was slightly looking better. Shirts and pants were much more comfortable to wear. I felt better about my body, and my wellbeing improved. I also, changed my eating habits, cutting out sugar, softdrinks and fat, but not starving myself. Limited my alcohol intake to a few glasses a week. Also, allowed my self, one day a week to eat like a pig.

By week 5, I started trying different ways to kickstart the weight loss results I was achieving in the early weeks. With a little help from google, here's a few things I tried -

1) improved diet, cut out sugars and fats (learnt all about eating right foods, eg protein intake and drinking lots of water.

2) adding weights to hold while on the machine

3) incorporating rest days into the training program, so I force myself to using it every 2nd day.

4) limiting alcohol intake to one drink max a day. Read about how alohol is bad for you vs how one drink is actually good for you.

5) eating many small meals a day vs eating 3 main meals.

6) getting enough sleep, keeping stress levels down, etc..

Its week 8 now and noticed muscle mass has increased, body shape looks much better but weight still hovers around the 106kg mark. The chest is solid and legs feel much firmer. Still some fat around the breast area but that is shrinking on a daily basis. Arms, and calves look well toned.

The fat appears to be dissappearing from the top of chest down and from the knees up. I have a feeling the belly fat is last to go.

I'll keep updates if u want every few weeks, but for now, it a good thing to use, if you've been a couch potato for a long time and want to kickstart a healthy lifestyle.
