Diet Pill Makers Face Hefty Fines
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has hit 4 weight loss pill makers with some very hefty fines. The fines (in the millions of dollars) are for false advertising claims.
The following four brands have been fined:
- Xenadrine EFX
- CortiSlim and CortiStress
- One-A-Day WeightSmart
- TrimSpa
Essentially the FTC decided that each pill-maker made deceptive claims about the efficacy of their products - and had no evidence whatsoever to back up their claims.
Xenadrine EFX is a joke:
...in one of these studies, subjects taking Xenadrine EFX lost an average of only 1.5 pounds over the 10-week study, while a control group taking a placebo lost an average of 2.5 pounds over the same period. Those placebo pills seem quite effective!
TrimSpa is heavily promoted by Anna Nicole Smith. That didn't help their case - the FTC found that the marketers "had inadequate scientific evidence to support their advertising claims".

woo hoo for placebos :-)
ReplyA friend of mine was in the business of selling these corti=this and that stuff. She used to talk about letting the weight go and other 'mental' stuff. Then over the last three months or so, I've noticed her on the elliptical trainer, etc. And guess what?? She has let the weight go!! :-)
ReplyI've had experience with all of these except Cortislim. I didn't notice much of anything except the Xenadrine gave me heart palpitations and chest pain...and did absolutely nothing for my weight.
ReplyNow that I'm older and wiser, I would never touch a pill like that again!
I took Xenadrine for a while, I didn't really lose much weight, although looking back I didn't need to lose any weight. I took it because I thought it would make me not hungry like Ephedra...yeah, I know, brilliant thinking.
ReplyI knew it didn't work but I was sick and desperate and that's where they get you.
I think most diet pills have a placebo effect, to an extent. People take them and change their lifestyles, thinking that with the diet pills "helping" them, the lifestyle changes will be easier. It looks like you could take a good ol' fashioned sugar pill and get spectacular weight loss results. With a "modified diet and exercise program", of course.
ReplyThe placebo effect is poorly understood and vastly under utilized. I suspect most people are stuck in the 'sugar pill' type of definition. Really, if you look at it as the body healing itself, it takes on a whole new perception. Sometimes I think every patient should be treated with a placebo before using dangerous medications. But then people have 'side effects' to placebos also...
ReplyI tried all of those with no success.... I was a miracle weight loss pill fantatic ..then when I started getting heart palpatations with Xenedrine and wierd creepy crawly feeling on my skin..I decided it was time to quit fooling myself and the only way to lose weight was to change my attitude on eating.. I joined weight watchers and in 3 1/2 months I've lost 20.4 lbs without starving and choosing the correct way my body needs to be fed and not my emotions..
ReplyWell, although the cardiovascular effects aren't great Ephedra & Ephedrine works! You can still purchase it online as the ban was repealled. It's pretty hard to find the herbal drug company's can't find stores to carry them because Ephedrine is a base ingredient in Meth-Amphetamine, along with alot of more volatile additives! I found this report funny because a placebo is usually a "sugar pill", so anyone who was taking these pills would have been just as well off having a few cups of strong coffee & eating a Tic-Tac to freshen their breath after! They may have lost MORE weight, as the placebo group! Also, although it works I am not advocating the use of Ephedra. Doctors prescribe Amphetamines to overweight patients to this day and the cardiovascular effects of Amphetamines(especially on obese people)are quite a bit more harsh than Ephedra. The problem with Ephedra is that it was sold OTC and it DOES work. Another person who posted said, people get desperate! The reason people died while on Ephedra was because they took the drug irresponsibly; they took 8 pills at a time. Ephedra raises your internal body tempurature, as does exercise, and these famous athletes overdosed on them, then exercised in the hot sun to lose weight fast, before the season started. Before these famous people chose to act in an irresponsible way alot of people benefited greatly from using diet pills with Ephedra included. After the ban on Ephedra, I don't think a lot of people realized that it was the Ephedra in their diet pills that made them see results! This opened the door for the sneaky herbal drug companies to market the "same product", with the same name, and BOASTED that the product was "Ephedra Free" so everyone felt safe taking them again. Leave it to big buisiness! At the time Ephedra was banned and these people were buying the "new, SAFER" version of the pill they used that worked before is when they started gaining weight back! Don't buy into the marketing machine of diet pills, go see a doctor or nutritionist. Maybe exercising some self-control when eating if you dont exercise, or exercising and eating the same as you have been! You can't buy a cure for any addiction, not even food! If you could this world would be a lot better of a place, with a lot less crime, and illegal drugs would be something people wouldn't want to use because they aren't addictive! :o)
ReplyVery worrying- I've lost 30lbs and more so far. It's taken longer than I hope/expected, but at least I'm not putting unfair pressure on my heart with these drugs.
People are VERY impatient these days. I'm mostly surprised when it's people who have only been overweight for a short while and have around 20lbs or less to lose. You'd think people like me who've been overweight/obese their whole lives and have way more than fifty to lose would be the most desperate. Maybe that's not a fair thing to say...I guess it's not how much you have to lose, but how badly the excess weight has affected you.
ReplyMK0364....don't know if I am taking a placebo or not! Have lost 30+ pounds over 4 months.
ReplyAttention Nay-sayers. I hate to break this to ya but ephedrine works! It must be taken responsibly. More is not better. Combine it with caffeine and aspirin and it works even better. Ephedrine and caffeine combine as a super fat burner and the aspirin helps by thinning the blood. This is good because ephedrine constricts the blood vessels.
ReplyAs far as some companies who claim that it lifts and enhances the mood, nonsense! It makes me irritable and short tempered. However I do notice that these effects diminish over a few weeks.
I'm not endorsing any company. I take pure ephedrine that I buy online. Then I take 25 mg 3 times a day with 200mg of caffeine and an aspirin. Again, ephedrine can be dangerous if you take too much. MORE IS NOT BETTER!
Taken correctly it suppresses the appetite big time. And I was a big guy with a big appetite. The ECA keeps me on a low calorie diet and ephedrine spares the muscle and causes the fat to be consumed. This is a vitally important effect! Go on a low calorie diet without ephedrine and much of the weight you lose will be muscle! Muscle burns calories. Lose lots of muscle then come off the diet and guess what...you all your weight back and then some and look like a giant marshmellow with less muscle than you had before.
Use ephedrine and keep the muscle! Exercise! You might even have the genetics to build a little muscle while you're losing fat. Depends on how low calorie you're going.
All the controversy is nuts. Take too much you die. True. But, drink too much alcohol...you die. Alcohol kills every day! Take too much ibuprofin....die. Too much of any drug will kill you.
There are REAL studies of ephedrine and caffeine on the net. Check them out. The stack has been proven in several different studies.
Fact is, I've lost weight. I'm healthier and feel better about myself.
I use Ephedrine and get it on the net. However, I haven't been able to find the right dosage to lose it like I did before. I used to use it when I worked in 2006, but I haven't worked since January 07, had a baby and seems even with exercise, diet, and the pills can't shke the weight. Give me an idea. I have a non working thyroid, which I suspect is the reason it's not going as fast as before. But realistically...PLease comment..I need advice!
ReplyHave you considered taking natural thyroid, instead of synthetic? It is truly a miracle pill for people without a functioning thyroid, not just for weight loss, but for making you feel like you did when you still had a thyroid. Makes all the difference in the world.
ReplyHi Elizabeth-
ReplyI am also hpothyroid (mine was removed). My problem has been very similar to yours. I did a lot of reading on diet and thyroid. I learned that I have to remove ALL caffine, nuts, limit starchy vegetables, limit dairy, and watch my calories/fat carefully (I eat about 1000 calories per day). I eat mostly fruit and vegetables, protein, and I watch my carbs. I also increased my water intake to 1 1/2 - 2 liters of water per day. Last my thyroid meds were changed to a T3-T4 combined pill, with time release T3 and higher T3. I take 10mg of Ephedra usually, sometimes 20. I am loosing weight and gaining muscle.
I use to take Motabolife 356 and on two occicions lost over 50 pounds. It was great! I don't know what all the fuss was about. More people die from smoking, but I don't see the FDA taking cancer sticks off the market. Motablolife 356 was probably the best weight loss product of the century. I actually think the company was paid not to manufacture it any more since it worked so well. Seems every time someone comes up with something that works, it goes off the market real quick.
Replyi was doing a project on diet pills and my friend wanted to see what would happend if you took the whole bottle... and well... she died
Replythe friend that died from this horrible OD was steph.. we will remember you always...
