The Best Life Diet
Fitness trainer Bob Greene has a new book out entitled The Best Life Diet. Greene has already authored a number of books (Get With the Program), and has worked with Oprah Winfrey (who writes the foreword in his new book).
With the volume of diet advice currently available - don't expect to see radical innovative answers - however Greene covers the bases well in his three phase plan.
Rather than going for instant results, Best Life focuses first on habits and emotional eating issues. This is refreshing - as most books are obsessed with how quickly the pounds are supposed to "melt" off.
The first phase looks at making gradual changes (in lifestyle and in exercise habits):
- Eat 3 meals plus one snack
- Start eating breakfast
- Increase activity level (depends on what activity you do now)
- Eliminate alcohol (you can add it back in later).
- Take a multivitamin, an omega-3 supplement and a calcium supplement if you're not getting enough from your diet.
- Stop eating at least two hours before you go to bed.
The second phase is a more aggressive weight loss phase offering menus and meal plans. There is an emphasis on eliminating unwanted foods from your life (just think of any vices you may have - soft drinks, certain junk foods etc).
Phase three is a lifestyle phase that provides meal ideas and fitness plans "for life".
This kind of approach to weight loss is the one that works, however bear in mind that people like Oprah - have mentors (such as Bob Greene) right on hand (or a phone call away). That's a bit more helpful than a book.
Caveats:
- There seems to be some product/brand endorsement going on here - with certain food brands being given the "Best Life" seal of approval. Some menus include SlimFast shakes.
- A journal is also available - and seems to be an "upsell" - with the further option (promotion) of joining the Best Life website (with a free 10 Day Trial).
- There is a certain level of "celebrity pull" here with a full week of Oprah's menu's being listed.
slimfast shakes
Replythough I eat the slim fast bars once in a while the shakes leave me starteved
Hmm, sounds promising, though SlimFast shakes (at least the ones I have seen) should be reformulated with better ingredients and less sugar.
ReplySlimfast shakes taste real good, but they have to much sugar, and i agree with Val, they leave you hungry.
ReplyTry this diet:
No trans fats are refined carbohydrates.
That is:
Eat fruits and veggies, meat and nuts, milk and other whole foods.
Stay away from: doughnuts, fried foods, sugary drinks, white bread, etc.
That's all.

ReplyI am confident that Gerald Ford's death was from old age. It is not caused by heart trouble nor lung problems. Ford's hospital stay recently was recently only for rutine tests, as well as: "a stent to improve blood flow", and "pnunomia from a bad cold". Betty ford said that Gerald Ford: "died peacefully at the confort of his own bed."
James, that style of eating sounds like a good plan, which will work!
ReplyAn interesting fact about Gerald Ford is that the "Right Turn on Red" law was a bill he signed. Give the man a thought the next time you do it!
I don't like Slim Fast shakes...they give me the runs and they make me feel half starved. I pretty much feel that a natural diet that is mainly unprocessed foods works wonders.
ReplyI agree with James.....keep it simple
I's like to add drink lots of water....lots especially if you increase your protein intake
A simple rule to follow when shopping...it really works.
Don't go down the isles....stick to the outside square where all the fresh stuff is ..... don't go down the isles that's where all the junk is
ReplyI'm a nurse and I'm on my feet for 12hours and I'm 210 lb. and i'm 5'7 i need to lose weight and keep it off, can you help.
caroline
ReplyOne good thing about being on your feet all day is that if you eat right and increase your physical activity just a little bit, you'll lose weight without a problem.
I was a nursing assistant for almost a year and I had never been so successful with a weight loss plan. I only went to the gym a couple times a week for about an hour at a time, but I think that since my job was so physically demanding, it made up for it.
Plus, since you're in the health field, your co-workers are probably having the same problems you are and are aware of the health risks behind it. So it could be a good way to find workout buddies, or people who want to go on a diet plan with you.
ReplyExercising and eating healthy should do the trick! Drinking lots of H2O is a big bonus and does help improve your overall appearance.
ReplyWhat is the deal with the Gerald Ford comments?
Regarding Bob Greene's diet...the yogurt he recommends has HIGH-FRUCTOSE corn syrup in it. That's an ingredient that the body can't properly digest or use and it IS all stored as fat. Much better to get yogurt with natural sugar or even with sucralose.
Replymtl, what you just said about HFCS is a myth. There is more info about it right here on Diet Blog. Your body does digest HCFS just as well as it digests sugar. You may personally believe sugar is more nutritious for some reason, but not for the reason you just mentioned.
ReplyJan: HFCS is shown to be a no-no on just about ever healthy diet, weight loss or otherwise. It IS metabolized differently that other sugars and contributes to weight gain. Unsweetened yogurt is best, but regular sugar is definitely better than HFCS.
ReplyAs regards to the Bob Greene Diet I purchase the book and I have been following Phase one now for two weeks, I like the concept that is behind the book but as for some of the things Bob recommended such as the yoguart and the one a day women vitamin the yoguart is definety not one you should be eating if you are trying to follow a healthy diet and the one day does not have the sufficent amount of vitamin your body need. there are other vitamins that are much better. Also why do I have to sign up for ten days on Bob Greene site if I have already purchase the book. A lot of this new book is geared to making money and I find it offensive. Not everyone can afford what Ms. Oprah can as a matter of fact I am sure 99 % of us can't. Anyway I am sticking to this one and see what happens in the next six months if anyone else is in Phase one I would love to hear from you it would be nice to hear from other people and how this working for them. Thank you!
ReplyI just landed on this site while looking for a good book on the NY best sellers. I'm so sad to see so many Americans dieting. I don't have weight problems but I'm always interested to flip through diet books and see what's out there. This best life diet looks like one more scam to make money, though he does make some good points. But, please, to all of you: stop dieting. Just eat nutritious-rich foods. Stay away from high quantities of fat or sugar. Natural is ALWAYS better for you. I would rather put a little half-and-half in my coffee than that powdery substance called creamer that has who knows what in it. If you want something sweet, have a LITTLE... and regular sugar and honey are natural. Stay away from processed junk that we're all going to find out causes cancer in a few years. Have some meat in your diet, have a little dessert, but MODERATE. James had it right: fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, dairy products (if they are high fat or high sugar, moderate). Fresh veggie advice: Wash, cut up, put on a pan, cover with olive oil, salt, and pepper, broil for 10 min. Tastes fabulous and works with broccoli, brussel sprouts, squash, zuccini, asparagus, you name it! And how delicious is a piece of fresh fruit? Just enjoy these fresh foods and stop eating the junk. Caroline, take my advice! As far as exercise, find something active that you enjoy... walking, riding a bike, frisbee, and do it several times a week! I surf and I have so much fun, I don't know I'm exercising. I wish all of you luck!
Replyi want to know if anyone has really lost weight from this diet or is it just another scam. i truly want to loose weight but i also would like to be able to pay my bills. i also dont want to eat the same thing every day just because it is healthy. i find it so hard sometimes to find things that are good but at the same time good for me and i also dont have all day to cook some gourmet meal im a fulltime worker and i need something quick, easy, and tasty. every time i try to eat healthy i find my self eating the samethings all the time. either some salad or a turkey sandwhich on wheat. im a picky eater and i need foods for real people not movie stars or billionairs. so in conclusion if this diet works please tell me or if someone knows how the solution to my problem please let me know. thanks.
ReplyThe Diet Works. I have been on it since November of 2007, and it is now September 2008 and I have lost 60 lbs. The toughest for me was the first 2 weeks of the diet, but once I got past that, it couldn'g have been easier.
ReplyI think it all boils down to portion control and making healtier food choices. You dont have to cut out meals or drink the sugary slim fast shakes. Just cut your meals portions in 1/2, eat more fresh and raw, and cut back on the processed foods like chips, candy, frozen t.v dinners etc. Definitly drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Drinking water also helps you to digest. You will lose weight by doing this, but one of the most important things to add to your weight loss journey is EXERCISE! Just 30 minutes a day is fine! It really works!
ReplyI think that the Best Life Diet has good principles to live by. When you think about it this book is actually telling us to do what all the other healthy weight loss books say. I've read several different books and they all promote the same message. Portion control, fresh and raw, etc. My husband and I are trying the Best Life and so far it's working well. It's teaching us how to transform our bad eating habits into healthy ones. Pretty much any diet will work as long as you stick with it. We diet for 2 weeks and then quit and say that it doesnt work. We just need to be more committed thats all.
Replyi need to loos 35 ibs by diet system
Replycan you help me by food recomended
This diet is really based on foods we should eat and exercise which is what every diet advocates. The difference in this diet is looking inward to figure out why you have a weight problem to begin with. I think this is and essential part of weight loss and why people can lose weight but not keep it off.
ReplyI try to eat healthy, always eating breakfast. I like Kashi GoLean Crunch with skim milk and fruit. Lunch is a salad with chicken or fish. For dinner I'll have steak or chicken or fish with 2 or 3 veggies. For treats I like apples sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnimon topped with Kashi cereal and baked at 350 for half an hour, served warm with low fat frozen yogurt.
I exercise every morning 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of free weights upper/lower body split. On the weekends I play, dance, clean my house etc.
I have 3 children. I weigh 135 on a 5' 9" frame. I have maintained this since high school. I eat pizza once a month, as well as MCDonalds. It's all about balance. It is not always easy. I get up a 4:45 a.m. every day.
ReplyHi Bob!
ReplyI have a small problem. Back in January I signed up for your diet and you billed my visa the full amount. Unfortunately the next day I sent in a cancelation because I realised I was not emotionally ready to disicpline myself to loose. I read that my visa would be credited back the full amount in August. I have not seen it yet on my visa billing. When I signed up I was on sympatico.com but I have changed to ELatondress@aol.com
I would really apprediate you looking into this for me.
Thanks Bob. I enjoy watching you on the Ophra.
eliminating alcohol is probably the best advice I've ever listened to as far as weight loss.
ReplyDid you really need The Best Life Diet to tell you to cut out alcohol to loose weight? Isn't that just common sense?
ReplyHello everyone. I too have purchased Bob's book, i read it and started to follow it. The thing that really got me about this book is that i have a very slow metabolism and i found that now after i have stopped eating 2 hours before bed, increased my excersise and switched to whole grains; that nothing has happened. I've been struggling with weight since i was a child, i'm now 21 and starting to loose hope instead of weight. I've followed his quide lines accordingly and nothing is happening for me. Like on person said on here, we all don't have as much cash as oprah to spend on glorious foods or a glorious dietition to create a specialized plan for diet and excersise. I believe his plan was made to fit mostly oprah, and i believe that there are many things we are missing from this book that you could only get with one on one consultations with only him. BUT he has the right idea, just eat right BUT not all of us, such as myself, know what things to buy. In canada we don't have his specially marked products for his diet, so we are kinda in a loss up here. SO somehow or someway, i'll continue on truckin' to loose my weight. My advice (although i haven't lost much yet) take a little advice from everyone and make your own diet that works right for you. Keep it healthy, keep it simple, keep it you. :)
ReplyThe Bottom Line: Calories are Calories, you lose weight because you reduce your caloric intake. You can lose weight on any diet consisting of 1200 calories a day. The only diet that works is one you can be comfortable with and enjoy. Eat what you love in moderation and you will lose weight. Why? because you can stick to it and enjoy it. I don't know about the rest of you, but if weight was not a problem for me, I still would not eat Granola Bars or drink Protein Shakes.
ReplyBest life is the very best diet I've ever found and I've tried plenty. It's not a "diet" in that sense of word that we've all come to know and loathe. It's not all-or-nothing - I don't have to worry about "falling off" if I mess up a meal or snack. I feel healthier, happier and in control of my life and for the first time in my life the weight is just falling off. I ignore the marketing stuff -- heck, I didn't even buy the book, I rented it from the library and get additonal info/support from free websites (diet t.v. and 3FC).
ReplyHFCS is shown to be a no-no on just about ever healthy diet, weight loss or otherwise. It IS metabolized differently that other sugars and contributes to weight gain. Unsweetened yogurt is best, but regular sugar is definitely better than HFCS.
ReplyBeware, the website is a joke. The menus are not for everyone. If you live in a small town with small grocery stores, you will not be able to find a lot of these ingredients! Also, I don't think MOST people would eat a lot of this stuff. The brand endorsements and book, and website are just a ploy to make MONEY. Bob does not personally care about your weight loss. I follow some of his rules, though I'm not sure if they are just his rules or more general rules for eating healthy. If you eat foods packed with fiber, you will stay fuller longer, same thing for a little protein. Fresh fruits and veggies, lots of water, lots of excercise. Sounds pretty easy and common sense and this guy has made millions off of us suckers! Thanks Oprah! Not only do you tell us mindless people who to vote for in '08, you can also brainwash us into any diet you choose. Which by the way, from the looks of it, you need to follow a bit more yourself! Oh, and if you need help with the website, good luck!
Replyplease am in ghana and i also want to loose weight. i have tried so many times but it seems it not working. how do we in the african countries also get some of your sliming products
ReplyHey Pam why are you even on this site ? sounds like your more interested in spreading hate than losing weight, and maybe you need to learn something about loving. you sound less informed than barracks apponents, and how did fat become a political debate. Its partially about loving yourself or did you miss that part of the book cause it sounds like you don't or you wouldnt be waisting your time , you would be out living your life. This is a motivational tool, That gives you all the information you need to lose weight , it even tells you what happens to your body when you do certain things like drink water or alcohol in full detail. But it takes you to do the work. It does work . If its not working for you , than you need to think about why its not working cause I guarentee your small town has fruit, veggies, meat, olive oil, wheat bread, cheerios, etc.
