Gee - you would think that with all the media coverage and public discussion of the body image of women, models dying of starvation etc, Mattel would get a clue!

Also, I think Barbie is fairly tall - I'd guess around 5'8", 5'9"? Hmm... 110 pounds at 5'8"... that sounds perfectly healthy to me. Not.

I hope parents boycott this particular Barbie.

in order to walk she would have to crawl on all fours because her feet are so small and not able to carry the weight of her boobs. she would have an extremely tiny waist line and her boobs would knock her over!

I've read that if Barbie were real, the lenght of her legs in proportion to the torso would make her unable to walk, so I don't think her BMI is the main concern here.

But what ages would be using the scale? That is my first thought about it stopping at 110... seems realistic to me.

I think the cost of the scale is a factor here too. You can use cheaper parts if it's only rated for 110 lbs.

I was thinking the same thing. If it IS the second option, there are going to be some pretty messed-up little girls out there pretty soon. I guess they figure most little girls that play with Barbies are less than 110, but that's not always true.

Oh, BTW...if Barbie were real, she'd be 6'11" tall with an 18" waist and 38" hips. I can't remember how big her boobs would be though...definitely a bit unrealistic, to say the least.

barbie was a real person.. but just looked absolutley nothing like the actual doll. she seemed pretty pessimistic about the whole self conciousness over a doll

Nearly 7 feet tall?!? My estimate was way off! Hmm... nearly 7 feet tall and weighing 110 pounds. Totally realistic.

Nic - I'm pretty sure the scale is a non-working toy scale to "weigh" Barbie. At least I hope so.

I'm glad I was almost done playing with dolls when Barbie got here. I had a ton of Susi dolls instead, and they are not as skinny and big breasted.

Here is one in 70s garb (I think I had that exact one). A doll with calves and thighs, how unusual.

Alexandra, unless you are 4'8", 123lb is not overweight and doesn't "suck". The people that you see as sticks probably think you are thinner than they are. That is the way things are. We are much harder on ourselves than on anyone else.

Barbie came out in the 1950s... and not everyone back then was super fat or super skinny but all sick or messed up in the head. Maybe the biggest problem with our culture is the LACK of an ideal and all sorts of mixed messages? Although Barbie does represent an unrealistic natural figure- it was a figure that was accepted as unrealistic because people recognized that movies and dolls weren't reality, that people wore slimming undergarments and corsets to achieve certain looks. I really believe that corsets of "repressed" women of the the eras before the 1960s.


I think the real problem is this "Everyone is Beautiful" bullshit because we all know that it is just that - BULLSHIT! It is time to find a Healthy ideal. Which is going to be something that might look "fat" by todays crazy standards but that is actually fit, a bit of an hour-glass or minimally spoonish figure (feminine). No centenarian women today ever had a six pack stomach or perfect muscle tone. Nor did she strain herself on a treadmill. She walked a lot and wasn't a lazy ass. Its that simple. Walk and stop being lazy asses! Its time to stop sugar coating things with "real beauty" or "beauty comes in all shapes and sizes" no... not really. It comes in a basic form with a bit of variation. Look at Greek and Roman sculptures... you might think they look fat... but they are still thinner than the average fat ass today. Stop bitching about working out for an hour on the eliptical, put down the ice cream and walk a little more, and you wont have to.
Keeping healthy is easy! It really is. It is super super simple. Dont stuff yourself and move around! the problem is that fat asses everywhere want to stuff themselves and stay still. You dont have to look like a fitness model to be healthy... you can still have a little jiggle on your thighs and be pretty... look at sculptures from 2000 years ago... and thats really the figure that the average fat ass should be emulating... a realistic goal. And its not that hard to get there. If girls just had active lifestyles and ate right from day one they'd never have to diet... but then... even this blog would be out of business. So here is the secret... get off your fat asses, choose active careers, walk to the store and eat your goddamn veggies! No more diets... no more scales...no more protein bars or supplements, carbs or no carbs debates, eggs or no eggs debates, etc 6 little meals or 3 meals, snacks or no snacks... all you have to do is go to the mirror... look at it, and if your fat or not happy.... stop eating and go for a walk.

Also remember this... people in the 1950s has bacon, eggs, and bread for breakfast (together)... then lunch, then dinner... and were thinner then they are now. Its not about each little item that you each. It is about eating less whenever your pants start feeling a little tight. Diet as a science is BULLSHIT. the average person isn't an athlete and is wasting their time worrying about optimizing their diets... and instead of sitting on their fat asses in front of their comupters... should be expending energy. Speaking of that... it is time for a run.

Numbers don't mean anything for people who have no means of measuring them. A healthy ideal needs to be seen in the a visual form. BMI means nothing to people if it doesn't equate with the visual they are getting! Body fat percentages mean even less to people who dont have the abilty to have their body fat taken in water or with a nulti-spot calipher reading. This is the problem with mixed messages!

And it is only bodies that we get mixed messages for. Facial beauty we dont- and really NEVER have. Facial beauty has been pretty standard for as long as history has recorded it- across many cultures. You can range from Beautiful- pretty- average-homely-ugly and then there are deformities. (don't believe me? go to http://www.beautyanalysis.com )
But the problem with today is the mixed messages that come from trying to make people feel good about things that well... they shouldn't. Ugly people just need to accept the fact that they are ugly, and instead of pine for it, develop other and often better and more valuable qualities.... just think would Einstein have developed his theory of relativity if he looked like Clark Gable...? no he would have been well... probably a hottie movie star.

I knew a girl from school, really huge, 5'9" and over 250 lbs... once she accepted that she wasn't going to be a model, she started rowing and is probably 170 now... her thighs might still jiggle, but she is prettier than the average girl.

I am not going to say that there aren't some beautiful plus size women out there... i am going to say that they are probably healthy, have Greek-figures, and are active.

Everyone needs to stop feeling like such victims! Youre not victims. You're not victims of consumer culture. YOU ARE CONSUMER CULTURE! You're buying into this idea that there is always some new perfect way of consuming foods in perfect proportions, with the perfect energy supplements, in perfect balance to perfectly adjust things to get to your "perfect" body weight. F-THAT!

Find some curvy Catherine Zeta-Jones picture from 5 years ago, or J-Lo, or Rose McGowan, or any other curvy 5'3" - 5'6" babe from early in their career and make that look the ideal. If your a tall amazon or short (which I am at 5'1") well too bad... you're not average. Life is unfair... play your hand well and deal with what you get. Shrink or stretch the proportions of the ideal accordingly, with what you can realistically acheive.

People who think they're big boned: You're DUMBASSES! Some people do have thicker or thinner bones or frames but it can't and never will explain jiggle, jelly rolls, spare tires, love handles or fat hanging over your pants. Other people do put on muscle easier than others but again... that will not explain jelly rolls, spare tires, love handles or fat hanging over your knees, belts, pants, bra straps or back fat in general.

Also here is another rule for women: a little bit of lower abdominal fat is really no big deal it means you can have babies (this applies generally to women under 40). Even in the most toned women who are still healthy this area is still sometimes a little soft. And really to be a successful belly dancer is is 100% required. Most guys even if they say they like rock hard models stil like this area kind of soft- and even shakira's is a little soft. Back fat on the otherhand is really not good. If you have back fat... time to eat less. (Don't diet... just eat a little less as in eat the same things but just a litle less.)

Finally the human body has plenty of energy. Energy supplements are for FOOLS. KCals or calories are a measurment for ENERGY!!!! Your gooddamn food is your enery and until you start remembering that food is energy you won't expend it. The body is SUPER SUPER efficient... if only cars were so efficient!!! The breakdown of fats, proteins and carbohydrates in the body is sooooo efficient that it can turn all three into FAT!

So all in all, no amount of barbie slamming is going to fix the problems! No amount of idealizing anorexics while slamming the ones who "get caught" and then calling the ones who "come out" "brave" will fix everyone.

We need to assign a visual body ideal in this politically correct culture and encourage people to work towards it... and even if you can never 100% achieve it due to circumstances outside of your control, well work with what you got.

Taking your body fat percentage is really easy. Get the Fat Track II. It costs $30, uses the 3-site Jackson-Pollock formula, and can be done right in your home.

You might be interested in Steve Reeves' system for bodybuilders. He had things like your bicep's circumference should be 252% of your wrist's circumference. He had other proportions for calves, thighs, waist, chest, and neck compared to other body parts. Maybe you could develop such a system for women.

It gives them a concrete test for them to work with. You can whip out your calipers and measure yourself; if you're under 18%, you know you're risking health problems; if you're between 18% and 22%, you definitely don't need to lose weight; if you're over 22%, you could possibly stand to lose weight. I think 18% is a good lower bound, but you could argue a different constant besides 22%.

Second, I think teenage girls need to take their looks less seriously. I'm a bodybuilder seeking symmetry, and there are very specific characteristics of a symmetric bodybuilder that need to be met. It's not just a certain weight or body fat percentage, each body part needs to be a pretty exact size. And, as much as I want to develop a body like Steve Reeves or Frank Zane, I'm happy with how I look now. I think improvement could be made, but I wouldn't do anything drastic, like steroids. I don't see why that has to be so hard to teach.

Hey that seems like a very cool thread. It's nice to know that people are talking constructively about this, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the BMI being included in student's report cards. I think exposing them to debates like this would be a lot more healthy not to mention much more likely to work. School systems tend to be rather faddish. While there are a lot of quality schools out there some of the districts try to do too much on the cheap. I suppose that's more of a political issue though.

Kudos to Erica and Ryan. I also liked the stuff about the Susi dolls, they rock. I just found out about them. :)

DR J. In my opinion I think that being married to Bill is what she expected and what she wanted. She is quited a sad case in life and not a role model in todays messed up society. We need to get back to our morals that the country once had. Man, our views are screwed up!

Not saying that obesity is a major problem in todays society. people on plane have to reserve two seats on a plane because their ass is to big. Man get agrip. Go on a diet. Cut down on the mcdonalds! As the American Obesity states on their website "Obesity is not a simple condition of eating too much. It is now recognized that obesity is a serious, chronic disease. No human condition — not race, religion, gender, ethnicity or disease state — compares to obesity in prevalence and prejudice, mortality and morbidity, sickness and stigma." We have a responsibily to keep our children out of thismess adn feed them properly. In this sense barbie is encouraging healthy habbits. Although you may say that is promoting anorexia. I think that maked women dolls should be eliminatedfrom the shelves all together and keep our children immune to nudity until they are older and in thie teens.

I also agree that Claire was right her boobs are SO out of place and she must of had made boob injections and plasitic surgery. Is that the reight message to be sending to children. What Bitch created a doll for infants with size F boobs? Take that in consideration when you buy your children a barbie for their fifth birthday!
