What is Wrong With This Picture?

Today my young daughter will dress up in an angel costume for a school play.

Innocence and happiness...

A little bit like the girl on the left.

What is wrong with this picture?

Everything.

It's enough to make me want to ban milk from our house forever.

Hmmmm I agree.

Same with very young kids doing dancing competitions in sexy costumes and pretending to make love to their 8 yr old partner in the tango or rumba. Eek!!!

The model looks like a very skinny biker chick. Not at all attractive

This is like a roadmap for where our country is heading. I can't put into words how angry this makes me.

What are you guys talking about? I'm completely missing it.

I banned Milk from my house year's ago!!

I know many little girls who aspire to be like Britney Spears, right down to dressing and dancing like her. The irony is that their daddies oogle Britney, while saying things like, 'when my daughter turns 16 I'm buying a shotgun, I know how teenage boys think'. Talk about double standards. Even the dolls girls play with these days seem to be dressed like prostitutes, I guess that is down to advertisements like this as well. On the other hand, if you banned every product that used this kind of advertising technique from your house, you probably wouldn't be buying much at all.

I'd have to agree with Mark. It's not really that bad. She's worn worse. I've worn worse ...

"Little girl - drink lots of milk and maybe you will be lucky enough to grow up like Britney."

The issue with this ad isn't so much what she is wearing. Two implications that really stand out to me as wrong are a) that it is a good thing for young girls to want to be like Britney (marginally talented eye-candy, who, as far as I am aware, has never done anything to better the world), and b) that the way to achieve point a is to drink milk, consumerism directly targetted at very young children.

On a side note, if drinking milk actually did turn one into Britney Spears, I think I would be banning it from my household as well.

Arrgh!

I don't think I can even contemplate how angry the whole milk thing makes me feel. Regardless of imagery used the message is always the same factually incorrect, propaganda laden, lie-telling bull**** that the dairy industry has been pedalling for years.

The fact that they are allowed to blatantly mislead and deceive (when almost every other industry would be banned from this type of message) is beyond me.

Rant over!

Ross: The biggest problem is that they claim the incredible health benefits of raw milk, which don't exist in processed milk.

Laura

who gives a sh*t!?

Ryan - You're probably right mate - I know for sure that the claims made by the dairy industry are based upon a very small number of studies funded by themselves that have very shaky methodologies and a shockingly small sample size.

Random info.... The pic on the left is really one of Britney as a child. Also, this ad is from the year 2000. This is around the time she started being a little sexier, but before she did most of the crazy stuff (kissing Madonna, the marriages, not wearing panties, etc.). Why are we bringing it up now?

As we saw from the UK burger-king ad, the marketeers will pull any trick, no matter how underhand to sell their product. PROFIT is king. Urgh!!! What a crazy world.

Drink milk and get to be successful and beautiful is the subliminal message here. Isn't there a law called 'the trade description act' that covers false claims by advertisers?

Is it possible that the message is that milk is not just for kids (it does say "grow up")? This isn't the first celebrity appearance in this campaign and as mentioned earlier it's pretty old as well (as is the "got milk" campaign itself). Much ado about nothing, I think!

ha. this is silly. true. disturbing.
ms spears is the WORST role model on the face of the planet...i'm sure you've seen what she's been up to lately... partying w/ paris and lohan for publicity. she has children, what a fuckin nutcase

It could be worse. They could use a little girl, instead of the real Britney, dressed to emulate that Britney. That would be much sicker.

Dr.J

I would suspect, from her parents point of view, that the years between those photos were their best memories of their daughter!

WOW - much ado about nothing about says it all. I do like Laura's colorful comment though!!

I'm missing it too. Teenagers have always dressed "over the edge"... always will too. Should young women be wearing burqas instead?

Reply
Nic

Isn't this ad, like, four years old?

Reply
kams

the first words are: "GROW UP" & the next are "GOT MILK"
The complete sentence may be--
for small childs ,to grow up, milk is utmost reqd.
the wrong thing is, the milk is with already grown up girl (britney spears)instead of the child

Of course not--what is unsavory about an ad like this is it implies a little girl can grow up to be an over-stylized commercial product. Not everyone who dislikes this ad is anti-sexuality. But many of us are anti-programmed commercialism based on misinformation and we want our kids to grow up to be their best unique selves and not imitations of these so-called celebrities.

What pisses me off if that all my 6 year-old cousin wants for Christmas is the like dance fever or something BRATZ dolls... hey let's all have our 6yearolds playing will slutty dolls! yeah, this pic bugs me but idk our dress code at school allows much worse, but your point has still been made:)

Reply

I still don't see the problem. If teenage girls want to style themselves up, let them. If six year old girls want to play with Bratz dolls, let them. They almost always get over it after a few years. There are so many women from my generation that played with Barbie dolls - most of us turned out just fine!

Perhaps the reason why a lot of girls and women are insecure is because we are told to be so? "If you like dolls, you're going to develop an eating disorder." "If you like to glam yourself up, you're insecure." Yeah, we become what you tell us we'll become!

I am 29 years old. I look 17-25. Regardless of my weight. After my father died i lost 60 lbs. I now weigh 80. I was hospitalized earlier this year when i had seizures b/c i weighed 72. I would like to get back to 72, but am afraid of dying, so 75 will work. i am 5'1 and looooooove the way i look when i am 75-76. Yes, everyone is very concerned but in the same vein, they tell me I look like Audrey Hepburn.

Lily, you are going to push some buttons on this web site. :-)
Actually, due to your recent illness, you should consider a well balanced diet and even strength training to build some muscle and SLOWLY gain a little weight. You will still look fab without being too heavy!

Jan

Lily: how about seeing a doctor? You need one.

Reply
Lily

Thank you Drj, I do actually exercise, not cardio but strength training, and Jan, I do know that i need to see a doctor, I'm just scared of getting fat. I know I have a problem, like there are two sides of my brain and reasoning: one says-EAT! you look sexier with ten pounds more, EAT! because you enjoy food! EAT! because you want t be healthy and live a long life!......but there is also the disease talking to me. "lose weight. You have to be strong, you have to resist temptation, you have to look like Nicole Richie, Kate Moss" and the weird thing? I have the same stats as Nicole Richie, but she eeems soooo much thinner than me. I don't know if I have body image problems, I don't know if what I see in the mirror is what other people see. Somedays I will look in the mirror and see myself as very skinny, but most days I see only flaws

Well, people have to know, Soy milk is worse than cow's milk. Soy milk is heavily processed, and all the nutrients are drained from it.

But we've drank cow's milk for years and years and years, even 30,000 years ago. We've only begun to get sick in the last 50 years. What's the real culprit? Junk food, including fried foods, cakes, pizza, hot dogs, and burgers.

Reply
Ryan

James: Not to say soy milk isn't bad, but most milk is very processed too, also with diminished nutrient content. Pick your milk carefully.

Lily, that is why I think you should see a regular doctor for a checkup first. He/she will be able to recommend a counselor/therapist to help with the inner struggle.

I care about you. I have been where you are, and I know how terrible it is. It takes over your life. I only got help when I collapsed, and by then I'd done some real physical damage already, and that is what I don't wish on you. I want you to start getting help before really bad things happen to your body. It is scary, and it is not going to be easy, but you have done a very hard part of it already: realizing you need help. I didn't, until it was pretty late.

Jan, Thank you so much. You will never know how much it means to have someone care about you when you don't even know them . I love you for that. I have scheduled an appointment with my physcian, and got A recommendation for a councelor who works with my friend who is a recovering anoerexic. I'm back down to 80 today......i need to throw out my scale. I need to stop listening to my mom, who will say either that I look like a corpse, and that I look healthier, but she says "you look plump!" when I weighed 81. I kmow she's trying to be encouraging, she just uses the wrong choice of words. I don't want to have another seizure and end up in the ER again. I don't want to die. But, why did i have a SEIZURE? I've never heard of anoerexic seizures, do you know? I weighed 72 at the time and was eating 200 calories a day for a straight 2 weeks......could it have been my blood sugar? the doctors never "diagnosed" me at the hospital.........luv, Lily

Take your pick of potential reasons - low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance (highly likely), malnutrition, dehydration, hyperglycemia, too low body temperature or even (scary, I know) lesions on the brain caused by long-term malnutrition and lack of oxygen-carrying cells to the brain.

Throw out the scale! I'm a recovering anorexic/bulimic and not being able to weigh myself x number of billion times a day was actually a big step in me accepting my body. Now I only get weighed when I go to the doctor and I try not to look if I can help it.
You can get better, I promise. Getting a counselor is a great, great, great idea.

I really don't see what is wrong with this picture... I mean, I get what is wrong with the outfit the kid is wearing but I don't see anything else wrong with it.

Nic is right, Lily. Throw out the scale and try not to talk to your mom about this subject right now. You can ask her not to talk about this subject. Eventually you'll be able to handle a well-intended comment with the wrong word without letting it get to you, but right now, you need to focus on getting better, not on learning to deal with that.
