Nicole Richie and Weight Gain
People magazine have reported that Nicole Richie has gained 5 pounds - one month after seeking treatment for her "inability" to gain weight.
I shudder to think at the tremendous influence some celebrities can wield. As the weighing scales go up and down - a collective audience of thousands will watch - and measure their own selves against the celebrity yardstick.
Nicole Richie has denied the label "anorexic".
But then, maybe it's all semantics. As I walk down the street I see the photos of all the thin young women on the magazine covers. They are like women in children's bodies - almost as if they were denying their own adulthood.
A diagnosed eating disorder is a kind of madness (and I'm not trying to offend anyone). I recently encountered a blog that listed model Carolina Reston's death as "pro-ana inspiration"... yes, just like a suicide cult. A very very slow suicide.
Nicole Richie may or may not struggle with a mental disorder - however her situation shows that weight gain and management is a complex issue.
It is possible to get your body used to eating lower calories - your stomach shrinks and appetite declines. If you are used to eating foods that are not-so calorie dense - then gaining weight can become very challenging.
Add some anxiety and stress (and any number of substances) into the equation - and your body just doesn't metabolize food all that well.
Food can be demonized or it can become a god.
What really motivates our constant wrestling with the scales? Vanity? Fear? Loathing?
Vanity motivates are constant wrestling with the scales.
I view weight loss blogs and most of the time people complain about having to shop in plus-size/big & tall stores, being made fun of, not feeling attractive...you get the idea.
There is nothing wrong with looking good - just don't die from it.
ReplyWe think you're right on about the circus that celebrities have become. We see the same thing in the beauty industry. (We're cosmetic scientists who run a blog that answers questions about beauty products.) Whether it's diet, style, or beauty why do people put so much stock in celebrity tastes? It's a mystery to us.
Thanks and keep up the great diet blog!
ReplyIt's not always vanity. Food, because it is so necessary for life, controls us and people with EDs (and I am one of them)find that they must control it to have some sort of control in life.
ReplyRefusing to eat is gaining power.
It's true and I'm not proud of it.
I agree. I had a friend in college that would always fast when things got hectic or stressful. He would say, "I need control. I'm going to fast." It would calm him.
ReplyI think overall you have a good point, but as a person who used to suffer from a severe eating disorder I would like to believe that Nicole Richie's case may actually be something completely unrelated to an eating disorder.
Replybeyond that I believe that she should be commended for having admitted that she needs to gain weight and that she thinks she looks gross and that girls should not look at her as an inspiration. that fact that Richie has completely admitted many times that she looks too skinny makes me think that she is way more socially aware than any other celebrity icon with any sort of weight problem than there ever was before.
I don't believe Nicole's whole "I look gross" talk. I'd believe it from someone like Mary-Kate Olsen, who is always covered in layers and layers of robes to disguise her shape, but not from Richie, who parades around in miniskirts and bikinis, even when she had the 5lb less on her (oh my, what a difference!). Nobody who feels bad about their body does that.
Reply"Nicole Richie may or may not struggle with a mental disorder..." - she does not have a mental disorder, just bad advice from her ex-publicist who seems to think she knows nutrition.
Reply"Bad advice" or as rumor has it, a nice little drug connection. I'm more likely to believe Nicole Richie is back on drugs, being a former addict, than that she has an eating disorder.
ReplyJan,
The irony is, when she was actually using drugs, which was some time ago, she was not thin at all and looked great.
ReplyI'm thinking it is different kinds of drugs now. But yeah, I always thought that when she was "fat", she was a little exercise (or a belly liposuction, if she'd prefer the easy way out) away from the perfect figure. She had great legs and arms, just a tiny bit of fat on the stomach.
ReplyWhen guys say that they prefer 'skinny people' they are just asking for us to be something we're not!
ReplyI think it's funny (and sad), that even when she was seen as "fat", she really wasn't fat at all. How much did she weigh, maybe 125-130 lbs at MOST? That's not fat...but of course it is if you're a female celebrity who runs around next to Paris Hilton all day.
ReplySad, sad, sad.
I completely agree with you, Millicent. Besides if a guy prefers skinny or whatever it is you that you are not - then you should prefer guys who are not him.
ReplyExactly. She was completly normal. Paris seems to be naturally skinny and that is fine, too.
ReplyYep. Not only she wasn't "fat" by health standards, she wasn't even "fat" by insane Hollywood standards except when she exposed her belly, which was the only non-Hollywood sized part of her.
ReplyThe correct term that you are looking for in "anerectic" not "anerexic"...
ReplyHi, I just found this blog. Currently I'm trying to lose weight, and it's because I actually need to. Years ago, there was a time when I dieted because I *thought* I was fat, but looking at old photos, I can see now that I wasn't. At the time I hung around with a bunch of skinny women, and I think that had to do it my wanting to lose weight.
BTW, Nicole Ritchie looks so healthy in this picture. Wow, five pounds really makes a big difference.
ReplyStacy, I'm glad you have a better mindset now, but if you think that Nicole Richie after 5lb is what health looks like, you still have a long way to go. I hope you meant that she looks less sick now than 5lb, but she certainly doesn't look anywhere near healthy.
ReplyNicole Richie was arrested for a DUI last night. The documents from that list her as 5'1" and 85 pounds. 85 pounds, AFTER the 5lb weight gain, while wearing shoes and clothes and huge earrings and whatnot.
So yes, Stacy and anyone else who thinks she looks "healthy", there is your information on her actual weight.
ReplyI think Nichole need serious help. She is a walking skeleton. she need to put on about 15-20 lbs and she would look great! Hollywood is such a lie...it isn't was it's cracked up to be. your a celebrity so your expected to be stick thin. what a shame. i'm 5'4" and 120-125 lbs. healthy and happy, considering i used to weigh 90 lbs when i was binging and purging or not eating at all. i think she is purging everything that she eats. that just my take on the situation.
ReplyLady Oz, you are right. 5lb for someone as underweight as she is wasn't even a drop in the ocean.
ReplyI am 5'1 and recently gained weight. I went from 72(and in the hospital for seizures) to 85. I feel fat. My thighs have cellulite-i think. I have to lose 5 pounds. i eat 300-600 calories a day. i haven't had my period in almost a year. But everyone tells me how beautiful i look, they say i look like Audrey Hepburn. for 3 days i've tried to cut down to 150 calories to lose that 5 pounds, but nothing so far.
ReplyI forgot to say: whomever those people are that are telling you you look beautiful - cut them out of your life. They are not good people to have in one's life. And yes, see a doctor.
ReplyJan, is that comment for me?
ReplyYes, it was. I think that the first step for you to be happier would be to cut negative people out of your life.
ReplyI have a problem gaining weight and although some may look at me and believe that i have a problem, i am just a picky eater and am naturally skinny, i look as though i have an eating disorder, i think people should not be so fast to judge, you never know whats going on behid closed doors, nor is it really our place to pass judgement and make matters worse if there is a potential problem.
ReplyLily. i know how you feel.
Replyi feel fat all the time. and i use to not eat nothing with fat in it. and stop eating at 6 o click. and run for 80 minutes a day everyday. and i am 14. at 5.0 90lbs.
you can NOT NOT NOT LIVE OFF OF 150 calories a day. just by liveing you burn 2000 calories a day. you need to see a DR asap!
I think nicole richie is a beautiful person on the inside and out she looks better than all the other actresses and singers out there and i know that she' knows that also.
ReplyI think it's so annoying how celebrities lose shocking amounts of weight, but they never admit to losing it through any "improper" means. It's never an eating disorder, and it's rarely even from a diet. They're all just naturally skinny, and if they gain weight, there's always some non-diet, non-exercise excuse for that too. I'd like them a lot more if they'd admit to being, and even looking, human.
Lily dear, you do need to see a doctor. You're dangerously thin as it is. You can't live off of 150 calories per day, and losing weight could kill you. Looking pretty is fine, but I prefer to do it outside of a casket.
ReplyAmy, I know - even when we've seen them fat, they are all "naturally skinny". Mary-Kate's publicist says she is not even skinny, it is just the bleached hair making her look skinny. When Janet Jackson gains a ton of weight, it was for "a movie role" (that was actually done by Mariah Carey, who is not as fat as Janet got for this "role"... mmm). And when a rare case like Kirstie Alley will come along and say "I stayed thin by starving and doing cocaine, got fat by eating cupcakes a lot, and now lost weight by following a diet program", they still fudge their weight stats.
The ones who had babies all just had the weigth "fall off them" with no special diets or anything. And they all *love* fast-food and never exercise. Yet you'll see pictures of them at "lunch", and you'll have Kate Bosworth eating just 1 breadstick and water, and Katherine Heigl "eating" a cigarrette and a glass of wine, but they are all huge eaters. Keira Knightley claims to eat huge bowls of pasta all the time. Right.
Replyare you out of your mind? to be honest i think you have a pre eating disorder. 85 lbs is totally unhealthy unless you're under 5 feet or 10 years old. you even said that you haven't had a period in a year. i mean doesn't that concern you? I'm not being judgemental but you seriously need to reevaluate your eating habits because you are putting your life in jeopardy. beauty should never compromise your health and you should seriously see a proffesional for advice.
Replydear anonymous, it is a constant struggle. I haven't had my period for over a year. I am an actress, so that makes it extra-hard on me.
ReplyOver Christmas holiday I ate all i wanted, for 2 weeks. The day after Christmas I felt bad so I was like "how much DO I weigh now? I got on the scale, thinking it would be 7-10 pounds.......I was 81! I had LOST weight! I was relieved(in my sick way) but also confused, I mean I ate ALOT, and I didn't gain! Take this weekend for instance, I ate sooo much chocolate but I wake up and my stomach is concave! it's weird ,Lily
Replywhat is EDS?
Replyis that true that you burn 2,000 calories a day by just living?
Replyano, you mean EDs. Short for Eating Disorders.
Li, a regular person who walks, works/studies etc. will on average burn around 2,000-2,500 calories a day. If a person is bedridden and truly just breathing/living, he/she would burn around 1,400 calories a day with those processes.
ReplyYes, Leah. And to determine how many calories you in particular needs, it is very easy. Eat as much as you are hungry for. If you start losing weight (feeling clothes a bit loose), then eat a bit more. If you start gaining and feeling them a bit tight, eat a bit less. It is simple enough and doesn't even require counting calories.
ReplyIf nicole does have Anorexia or shes back on drugs or whatever than I think girls should still admire her as a fashion icon or whatever they see her as but I dont think they should follow her eating habits I mean theres a difference between being a fan and being a follower. Personally I think Nicole is doing a great job at putting on her lost weight and I think she looks better then she ever has. Its terrible, I mean when shes overweight the press comment, when shes underweight they comment, HEY PUBLICISTS, STOP COMMENTING AND GET A LIFE OF YOUR OWN!!! I mean really
ReplyI think losing weight for anyone other than self is crazy because at the end of the day you are only left with yourself.we must love ourselves. If you treated yourself bad all day (starved it,been mean to it)thats what you lay day with. You and your feelings.I think the public looks to our favorite star or stars for inspiration to change things or take that chance. But if we see our favorite star doing horrible things.Hurting themselves, comparing themselves to others or just plain trying to fit in with the norm(hollywood norm). We as the public wish related to in some form to our favorite star..Some are born into it and I see alot of children stars have alot more prolbems with trying to cope with being famous. It is a tragedy that the world feeds on others misery and craziness. But that is where the world is today. You cant change the whole world but you can change how you see it and how you see yourself and your fellow man.I was lost within myself and the world. It took me 35 years to find myself and It takes a everyday consciuos to show myself love. Then and only then did I relize what love was.All the things I did to myself was selfish.Hurting myself and the people who love me, watching me, hurting myself and the only person who can stop is me, is ME.Rehabs, therpy it all helps but it must start within, first.Be good to yourself today! With all that money honey what would you really like to do.Why waste your life on meanless things which make you feel bad about yourself.I ralize all people have there on problems even stars they are human. But today be a good inspiration.Even as we watch stars battle there problems we as the public will want better for ourselves. As I watch my favorite star I feel there pain ride with them through there ups and downs .But during that journy with my star, hopefully I am working through the struggles in my life.I dont care what anyone says about nichole richie and her boobs they r hers and she has to live with her decision.I see her trying feel better about about herself.Whatever, that might be.But I just want the world to know if your going to get addictted to something, get addictted to being good to yourself.Buy that pair of shoes even if it anit in stlye just because you like them, widow shop even if you have the money.Get on the internet and talk with someone who feels the same way as you, they dont have to know who you are, people just like to know they are not alone or struggling by themselves no matter who you are.As your driving and you see a shop that looks kinda cool stop even if no famous person shops there and browse.Do something anonymous. Easier said than done for stars, showing kindness to others will help in learning to be kind to one self.Even if its a cup of coffee or a meal without them knowing,Once a day keeps the doctor away.eve If it gets plastered in the newspaper the next day.It wont matter, you know why you did it and that is what matter. They proably wont print it but if you got mad and hit someone they will print that .Take a consciuos effort everyday to do things that are good for yourself even if the rest of the day you do things bad for yourself because pretty soon the good will out way the bad.God Bless all and all who read this ,love yourself today is my only hope for everyone in the world.
ReplyIf I can help anyone , just share my experience or share my struggles as I am also trying to find a better place in my life. Each day is a stone removed.Email me please.
I have started having grand mal seizurs, do you think it is b/c I am underweight? And now (for two days sraight) whenever I eat I cannot keep it down. I get super nauseas and barely make it to the toilet.
