LA Weight Loss: Caught Out Again

One of the most heavily commented posts on Diet-Blog was about LA Weight Loss and their underhanded sales tactics. Comments were overwhelmingly critical of this weight loss clinic (however there were some occasional positive testimonials).

LA Weight Loss has been caught out again - and must pay out $100,000 in refunds to misled customers.

The Attorney General's office used "under-cover" shoppers to investigate LA Weight Loss and found a:

"classic bait-and-switch routine in which employees pushed the sale of protein bars and nutritional supplements after consumers had enrolled in the program," (source)
LA Weight Loss also claimed that their protein bars would "prevent you from getting saggy, baggy skin when you lose weight," - a complete load of nonsense.

Consumers who believe they were misled when they enrolled in the LA Weight Loss program between Dec. 23, 2005, and Aug. 31 2006 may request a refund within 30 days. Get the full details here (in sidebar).

NOTE: This refund is only available to Washington State residents.

UPDATE: LA Weight Loss now offer an "at-home" program. The program includes access to an on-line community, customized meal programs, 4 weeks of LA Nutritional Bars, and samples of best-selling products -- total cost $219.

I have been on LA wieghtloss since July and I have pretty much had to do it on my own the centre here is run by a bunch of morons that are skinny and have not had to worry about weight in their lives. I got that speach about the saggy skin to but all you have to do is tone while on the program and it still does the same. I had to move centre's because the help was absolutely terrible where I was now it is not to bad but I never reached my goal weight because they kept screwing with my diet and telling me to drink hot lemon water all the time. They then tried to tell me that I will have to purchase other weeks to loose the last of my weight But in the contract they say that we get free weeks if we are on the program and eating the bars. I am in a fight over that. Plus where I am the manager said that if they caught the girls giveing free weeks thier pay would get docked. This is very much a bad thing.

OK, I am on a whole happy with LAW because I plateaued in the 150's after about 5 years of trying to get down to my goal of 130 (I am 5'3") 5 Years before in college I broke 200. I was going to the gym A LOT, went to a holistic chiropractic dr. That prescribed healthy herbal supplements and know what? That was expensive too. I tried a lot fo different things. Being healthy is expensive. Ramon Noodles Are Cheap. Ramon Noodles Suck the health out of you and make you fat. There is so much crap out there you can eat and yes, it is cheap because it is crap. I have issues with money and wish that LA didn't suck me into buying supplements and bars but for the most part THEY HELPED. IT took about a year (Even though it was supposed to take me about 14 weeks to lose the 28 poundsI needed to lose) but know what? IT worked. Nothing worked before this. I was fighting to be in the 150's and LAW Got me below the 150 mark. I didn't gain all my weight in a year let alone five so why should I complain about how long it took to lose it. You can't always get what you want, you have to work with what you have. Do whatever helps. LA Has helped me although the past 4 months I have gained 20 pounds back- went through a break up, moved, new bf I am extremely happy with that loves to cook and an absence from a gym and yes I gained weight back and I stopped following the plan. MY sister is 117 pounds used to be a gymnast and I got all the fat genes. My point is you have to do what you have to do. If you eat a whole bunch of calorie dense food, your body will try to store it. It is a primitive fact. Our primitive ancestors stored fat to survive and it just doesn't work in this modern world. LAW Helps me spread out my food and puts me on a routine and adds structure to my life. I love food. I need structure. I workout a lot, now that I need to lose over 20 pounds again I plan on going to the gym 2 times a day atleast 4 x's a wk until I just need to maintain and YES it is extremely time consuming and YES food and Supplements are very expensive but research the supplements, they make sense-like the xcel having a whole bunch of b vitamins, green tea and yerba mate-things to boost your metabolism. Another reason I work out a lot is because of stress and depression and I have very bad kneas. I call it my "pre-Physical Therapy" I need it in my life for balance. LAW has taught me balance because someone that just happens to be skinny so they are peckish and don't really eat can't tell me how to eat. Premade meals don't work because I go out to eat and I have a life. It does bother me how I do feel more educated about health and weightloss than the majority LAW employess but I know how being on the program makes me feel and how it helps me to maintain my muscle a lot better (usually if I get stressed out my body uses the muscle as energy and stores MORE fat) You have to know your body really well and admit you are helpless to what your body was made to do- survive and just work with it. LAW is working with my body even though it is expensive but being healthy enough to run 2 miles without stopping at the gym or not sweating my butt off if it's hot when everybody else is, is well worth it. I am human, I have eat attacks, my body has urges to have high calorie foods. I try to do what I can to prevent this and that is where structure and planning comes in. You only have one body to work with so do what you can as soon as you can. Assume most will not realize what you have to do to not be over 200 and unhealthy because most people don't realize what it takes. Do you have what it takes? Don't blame other people, you control your body. Side note- yes, I do the juice and the supplements but you have to look at the whole picture. research! One of the reasons your body retains fluid and fat in the cells is because of all the toxins in todays environment and cheaper more convenient foods that your body can not process. Juicing helps get rid of that. So does De Tox Tea (that you can buy in a grocery store). That costs money too. There is a reason celebrities look so great and have expensive personal trainers and chefs (well besides the ones that are too skinny) It take a lot to be healthy and maintain a healthy weight. Educate yourself and get things in your arsenol that will help you- such as LAW. Work on your QUALITY OF LIFE!

I phoned three LA Weight Loss Centers throught the country. All stated the program is only $6 a week. This sounds affordable but beware. None would quote me the cost via the phone. I was told an "individualized" program would be planned for me. I must be special. I asked if I would meet with a nutritionist and 2/3 said I would. When I pressed further I was told their staff are not nutritionist but are "counselors." When I asked if the counselors are social workers or therapists, I was told the counselors are specially-trained by LA Weight Loss and no one could become a counselor without proper training. And I thought counselors were college educated professionals who have earned an advanced degree.

I was told I would be consuming supplemental products such as bars and shakes. I informed them that this did not interest me. They informed me that I must have them as it is part of the program. So much for my "individualized" program. I asked one center if she received commission for selling the supplements. "I am not at liberty to say" was the response.

Well.... LA Weight Loss,,,, I am not at liberty to participate in a program with such underhanded tactics.

As an RN specializing in psychiatry and medicine, I have seen women suffer with eating disorders and poor body image. And, let's face it. The majority of clients are women. Women are bombarded with messages that they are not ok. We need to be skinny to be happy. And can we be thin enough? Does LA Weight Loss know the average size of the women in this country is a size 14?

False claims and high-pressured sales have duped many women into believing that LA Weight Loss is a panacea for weight loss. All three "counselors" cheerfully told me that I would lose significant weight immediately.Weight management is a long-term commitment and purporting significant weight loss in one week is preposterous. Consuming bars and shakes as opposed to learning to eat healthy foods and controlling portions keeps the "counselors'" pockets full. But it is a recipe for failure in learning food management. Learning healthy food choices and portion control is key to successful long-term weight loss and optimal health.

Shame on you, LA Weight Loss.

to whomever,
la wieght loss is a huge rip off. I hear $3 day and i thought great that's the cost of a sandwich. I have spent hundreds & hundreds of dollars. They made me pay to enroll for a full term loss period, sustain & maintainence. Then they made me pay for all these pill and bars and told me I had to have them. I have only now found out that I don't. They told me I could borrow they money on credit no finance charge. After I signed the papers they told oh no fees for three months.

I am shocked to see Whoopee Goldberg representing the company of L.A. Weight loss. The fact that this company would choose this person who spews hate and filth out of her mouth, shows horrible judgement. I hope that anyone who considers decency an important part of our character and community will boycott this company.

The soy lection in the LA bars helps prevent the skin from sagging. You can eat plain soy all day and would still sag. The soy lection gives the skin elasticity. I have lost 30 pounds with La weight loss and it only took me six weeks. It is the best thing I could have ever done. Another good thing about LA Weight loss they help you keep the weight off. I guess if someone was not really committed to their weight loss program, and wanted to continue to eat like pigs I guess they would want their money back, however the bars are great and the supplements are magnificent.

Layla, soy lecithin, which is what I assume you mean by "lection", is a moisturizing agent present in pretty much every single industrialized food out there. Pick up a candy bar or a bag of cookies and you'll see it listed. It is not a magical ingredient the nice folks at LAWL add to their bars that makes sure your skin doesn't sag. It is what they put in it so that in a couple weeks the bars can't double as doorstops.

They sold you this lie that their bars prevented skin from sagging and you believed them without even checking labels of every other food out there to see that they also have soy lecithin. Sometimes when you buy a frozen chicken breast even it contains soy lecithin. So you could be eating any other manufactured food and getting the same anti-sag "effect" you think the bars are giving you. You probably were eating tons of soy lecithin in your diet without the bars before the diet already, and did it make your skin nice and firm?

I just joined on Monday and quit today. I paid $472 and then went in tonite reading saying you don't need the bars from other people and the lady said you do. I said I am sure I can find whatever is in the bars in walmart cheaper. I go to the gym every nite after work and eat very healthy. I am losing inces but not the lbs. I wanted to lose 15-20 lbs but I cannot afford the bars I am a single divorced parent. I was happy to be able to join and learn how to eat the right proportions to lose the lbs, big let down.

I joined LAWL in 2004 and lost 40 pounds over a course of several months at my own pace. I thought the plan worked really well for me and having the frequent weigh ins discouraged me from cheating. I think that it is overpriced, especially the protein bars, which are really good. I was not happy with the customer service however. I felt like I did not receive any of the "counseling" that they claim to give. I would go in and weigh, they would look over my journal and out the door I would go. I never got any additional tips, etc other than "follow the plan." I did not complete the mainteance period because we got pregnant soon after I reached my goal. I do intend on getting back on the plan (on my own.) It is the only thing that has worked for me, if I stick to it! Good luck and I hope you all find something that works for you! BTY, you can find the plans and supplements on ebay for much cheaper!!!

LAWL has far surpassed the nutritional knowledge I gained with WW and the staff at the LAWL center have been nothing short of understanding and supportive, never pushing anything on me that I didn't want to buy. I love the bars so I chose to buy them. No one promised they would help me lose weight. Actually, the WW bars were pushed more at their meetings than at the LAWL check-ins. You are also taught about healthy eating habits and how nutrition works with LAWL. I have been very impressed with the accurage medical knowledge and nutritional knowledge of the LAWL staff.

I know that the program works, I see it every day. I think that people think they are just going to lose the weight because they joinrd up. No, it takes work and it wil not fall off over night. You didn't gain it over night either. Is sales a part of the job, yes. Will these help you, yes. But, that doesn't give you a free ticket to cheat because you bought it. Some people say, " I dont know why i gained, I haven't cheated at all. Yeah right. Is it possible to hit a plateau, yes. That is a part of weightloss. When people dont write down what they cheated with, they re not cheating me, they are cheating themselves. This program is also safe, we say about a 2 pounds a week, Men even more a week. Are we educated, yes. We are all trained, and the Med Tech position requires two years of expeience and certification. I care about my clients and want to help them I listen to their problems even when it has nothing to do with weightloss. Is it expensive, it can be costly. Do we threaten to break your legs if you dont buy a supplement, NO. You are grown people with a mind of your own. Is washington the only state that was giving out rebates, no. We dont bait and switch anybody, you are told of the price in your consultation and told of the bars. maybe, some people on this site are just looking for an excuse to quit, maybe you should get into the center for some motivation. Sometimes people just need to blame others so that they can let themselves off the hook and quit.

In response to the RN, LAWL claims 2 pounds a week, we do show you how to eat healthy foods, the shakes and meal replacements are optional. Many on the go people love them, and yes the average size is a 14, how sad is that that you think thats acceptable because its the average size. do you lecture the fast food drive thru's you go through,or do you just say shame on you to people who are trying to help you. You too need help or you wouldn't have called a weightloss center. Sorry your feeling so negative

oh my oh my....i have been considering joining LA in Australia and i have decided (after reading all the comments) to get myself an appointment with a nutritionist, and even pay for a personal trainer for 2 sessions a week, over 4 months. all up it is going to cost me $1300.00 i believe that people can loose weight if they really do stick to the basics of 80/20. eighty percent good, 20 percent not soo good. my sister went on the Tony Ferguson diet. she lost 20kg in 15 weeks. if my personal trainer and nutritionist dont work. that one will be my next attempt. it cost her $6 per day. she didnt complain, because by the time she worked out how much she was saving by not buying fast food and a coffe every morning before work, she was better off with the diet. good luck ladies and gentlemen. i only hope that motivation stays with you and that you remember.....
if you cheat, you are cheating yourself, and if you do cheat, dont give up start back up again on your next meal, not the next day or next week. but the very next meal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
happy healthy lives to you all

I to joined LAWL. What a joke. They staff seems to have taken telemarketer classes. I was scheduled for my first week follow up and after waiting 40 minutes, I checked back in. The salesperson stated "oh this is your appointment to buy your bars. I stated I did not want to purcahse ant at this time. She went down the hall and announced "Your appointment isn't buying anything". I then asked yet another salesperson if I needed to stay, she stated well if you don't need bars not really.
The staff are paid commission based on sales!!! I didn't realize that but it certainly explains the big push for the products they offer.
The other questioned I asked was how a bar made with
sugar, fructose, corn syrup etc, could assist in weight loss and was told "well I do not actually know, but they do work".
I should have demanded a full refund, but I wrote it off as a huge costly error in judgement on my part. Buyer beware!!! If you are on this program check e-bay for products then tell the salseperson of the day,I will bet you hear something like "How can you be sure they are safe". Her/His concern is really, There goes my commision.

from a former employee.....this is a great program if you are independantly wealthy and have the time 3 times a week to sit with a really spunky, cute, thin girl and let them tell you that you cant eat 5 hot dogs and lose weight
Not trying to be a turd....but really!!!
I saw people who had alchohol for dinner come in each time with no results... I talked to people that clearly had emotional issues to deal with that would weigh in with no results and be more upset than before they walked in the door .....
the program does work BUT!!!!!!! If the reason for your weight gain is emotional, then you need to see a doctor...not LA Weightloss...think about this before you sink non-refundable money into a program that isnt going to spearhead your real problem....beauty comes from the inside out...but overweight is unhealthy!

I've read through all of the postings here and I don't know what to think... LA Weightloss obviously isn't cheap. I have an appointment tomorrow for my free consultation to see if LA Weight Loss is for me. So, I guess I'd really like some advice on what I should pay extra attention to and look for to avoid any of the pitfalls the program may have.

So, judging from the comments made the program is structured to pay the anticipated number of weeks for weight loss up front. I was told over the phone it was $12 per week (in Canada). That seems high?

Do you really need bars or supplements to loose weight on their program?

...feeling pretty nervous about going in. I am at the point where I have to get this weight off, and I'm afraid they'll take advantage of that vunerability.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Does anyone know an address to write to to complain? I had joined and quit because the skinny ditzes were NOT counselor material! I felt awful because of then when I gained 0.4 pounds - 0.4 POUNDS!!!! Plus, they gave me samples of the bars to try first and then I found out from my doctor I couldn't have them because soy is bad for me who has PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Isn't this cause for a refund of money??

Im a Male thinkin of join LAWL. Im 6' 260lbs. I called one of the centers here and the lady asked me how much i was looking to lose. I told her 40 pounds. She said, "Ok, come in for a complementary visit and we'll get you an individualized plan". I asked her 3 times during the call how much it costs, and she quickly changed the conversation and insisting that it would be determined by the plan i needed. Im really skeptical of going to them because I can't afford 1500. I mean, sure it would be nice to lose the weight, but They dont have a Guarantee or a Refund policy. If you make your goal weight, then good for you, and if you don't then so sorry, thats how i feel they will do.

I was a memeber of LA Weight Loss. They do a very good job of seemingly wanting to "help" you lose that weight, but after two months of being on the program, it was made very clear that what they really cared about was making commission off of their very expensive supplements. I stayed on th eprogram out of desperation, and I did lose weight....after spending well over $1000. The last day I went in, I met with "counselor", I had hit what they call a "plateau"...I was followong the program and not loosing anymore weight. I was upset and crying about how frustrated I was...her response..."well you really need to buy more supplements, we have a great deal right now..." I cut her off mid-sentence and left. I have not returned. If you join LA, you will lose weight if you stick to the plan, but be prepared to spend a TON of money, and recieve very little supoprt.

I have been on several diet programs & started LAWL 3 months ago. I don't know if it's just my centre but so far they have been very supportive. I have IBS & they were they were the ones to tell me that I wasn't allowed to do their supplements or LA Lites, because the dietician said it would effect me badly.(same for the juice) I've done WW & hated it becasue they make you weigh in in front of everybody when you gain everyone can hear.(and in canada its 15$/w plus 50$ to enroll) When I weigh in here it's private & I have never been made to feel bad by the counselors that I have gained.
My best friend died while I had just joined so I was not in for a couple of weeks, when they found out why they gave me hugs & let me talk about my feelings. (even now they still ask how I'm doing) I don't have support at home to do this & they've made me feel like I have someone to talk to. I still haven't made it out three times a week & nothing was ever said about that. I do believe that some people have been wronged but there are bad representatives with almost all these programs. You just have to be wary of them. Reading what I have I feel pretty lucky to be at the centre out in Winnipeg that I am. A lot of people have bashed the skinny counsellors the ones here actually have been overweight & show you the pics to prove it (several as much as me & I'm 240). It no doubt is expensive but figure if something is going to help me get healthy its worth it (especially against the medical bills I'll be paying later) I hope you all find something that helps!!

i just started LAWL a couple of days ago and am feeling similarly to many others, that I've made a HUGE mistake with my money. when presented with the "gold" eating plan, I was immediately apprehensive about how little food, especially dairy & starch (which amounts to 1/2 english muffin & 5 wheat thins), that I would be eating. Upon asking how many calories the meal plan was based on, my counselor couldn't answer. Another red flag was when I asked what the program recommended for exercise, and was told that they didn't recommend anything, that there was a program for those that did exercise & for those that didn't. I consider myself an intelligent person and know what is healthy in terms of diet & exercise, but just haven't been able to kick this extra 20 lbs, and thought that maybe the accountability & counseling that this program offered would make a differnce. But at what cost? I also noticed that the south beach diet bars (available at costco) have just as much, if not more, protein, less than half the amount of sugar, and more fiber than the la lites. I'm definitely not buying more of the la lites bars when I go to my last "scheduled" appointment today & I"m also going to be asking about a meal plan with more calories.
CAN YOU GET A REFUND IN THE FIRST WEEK?

I feel that LAWL is misleading. They get you in there, sell their program. Get your money and then they hit you with the real deal. Supplements, LA Lite Bars at $16 a box and then the snacks. When I need to buy supplements they always want my money first, then they tell me they are out of the supplements. I live 45 minutes away from the center so its not like I can just hop in my car the next day to pick them up. This has happend at least 3x since I have joined. Have I lost weight? Yes, 12 lbs. but I have exercised and kept up my part of the deal but LAWL has not kept their part of the deal.

I have a client who lost 40 lbs on LAWL plan and has kept it off for over six months. She is my age and in perimenopause (which I thought has added the lattest 20 pounds). I was thinking about joining; however, there appears to be significant controversy as to the cost versus benefits! Besides weight watchers, is there anyother more reasonable plan with similar claimed results?

I joined LAWL in October for a discounted rate which wasn't bad, but then I was given the heavy-handed sales pitch for purchasing the LA Lites in bulk. I have an allergy to milk, whey and cassein which are all in the LA Lites and all but 2 of their products. I explained it at the time and was told to give it a try and if I couldn't eat them, then I would get a refund. Well, my allergy to milk, etc. has gotten worse from eating LA Lites. I've provided requested medical document and I'm now having trouble getting the refund. They are doing the stall tactic...hoping I'll want to use the credit against more products -- only 2 that I can use! I am very disappointed and now losing sleep that I won't get my refund.

It really is a shame that some of the contributors on this post feel scammed by LA Weight Loss. I have lost over 87 lbs in 7 months and have never felt better. My mother lost 75 lbs and has kept it off for over 2 years with LA. In no way did I feel scammed. It has changed my life. The fee for the program was worth every penny. I do not think about my weight anymore. I tried Jenny and WT Watchers and they did not work for me. The LA Lites satisfied me and got me over the humps. My counselor was very forth coming about the price of the bars and gave me options. I did not feel mislead in anyway. It states everything right on your service agreement. Maybe those individuals that felt mislead should have read their agreements before signing. I am thrilled that I am on my way to receiving my rebate and enjoying my life!

I am a LA weight loss success story I lost 35lbs and I love it I have learned to eat healthy and in moderation which is the key to success of LA weight loss centers, and as for the sales tatics yes they do sell products at no pressure!! but they are delicious and nutritious, unlike other weight loss company's this really works and teaches you that you are free to live and eat all the foods you love in moderation. I believe it is an investment in yourself, people spend every bit as much money eating junk and fast food so why not do it the right way and loose weight in the process...

I joined LAWL last year. It cost me $1,500.00 to start up with. A few weeks later I was confronted with the offer to buy the bulk bars. Another $1,500.00. I was given a money back gaurantee at this time but should of asked for it in writing. I have also sspent money on supplements that I turned out to be allergic too. The first 3 months on the plan I did lose 22 lbs. The next three months I didn't lose anything. I stuck to the plan perfectly, even through the holidays but wasn't losing anything. I would travel over 80 miles to the nearest weigh in center at least once a week. At the end of the 7th month I found a job which prevented me from going in any more and told them I would have to quit. I asked for a refund and was told they would take care of it. Months later I was finally told I was out of luck and that I should of read the fine print. They still have to this day (one year later) 5 cases of bars I have paid for and over $3000.00 of monies paid for services I didn't recieve. And all I am told is that there is nothing I can do about it. This is one of the worst scams I have known of. And yet it is legal.

I joined l.a. weight loss Nov. 13, 2006 and have lost a total of 13 pounds to date. They told me I would lose 2 pounds a week and would have lost my goal of 20 pounds by Jan. 22/07. Today is Jan. 31 and although I have not reached my 20 pound goal, I feel really good about the weight loss so far. That is not how the manager made me feel last week. She told me that she was "concerned" that I was in week 11 of a 10 week weight loss plan. Then she told me that I would have to pay an additional $15 per week until I reached my goal. You can imagine my surprise. I told her that I thought I had signed up and PAID FOR a one year program. She said it was based on 10 weeks weight loss, 6 weeks stabilization, and 36 weeks maintenance. I told her that I would not be paying additional money for those weeks as I believed I had paid for a one year program - period. She said she would have to speak to her supervisor. Nothing more has been said to me since and I've been there twice since. DON'T FALL FOR THIS. If they want you to pay extra because you haven't reached your goal - don't do it. If they give me a hard time, I will demand the remainder of my plans (stabilization and maintenance), and do the rest on my own. All I really needed was a plan to follow and to learn how to eat healthier and in moderation. As far as the L.A. Lites and the Take-off juice goes - don't even get me started. The L.A. Lites taste good but are a total ripoff. I got them for about $14 a box in the beginning and bought 10 weeks worth. Now they would cost me $18 per box. I compared the calories, etc. between the LA. Lites and Nutribar snack bars. Nutribar snack bars range between 100 and 120 calories. LA lites range are 180 calories and up. The nutribars are a little smaller, but they also only cost $3.17 per box at wal-mart. Check the label on the take-off juice. The calorie content and ingredients are not much different from Five-Alive juice. The take-off juice is almost $40 with tax per bottle. Do you know how many five alive cans I can buy with that? They have tried to talk me into supplements, but I'm not falling for it. I take a multi-vitamin and calcium supplement every day (store bought), and my doctor has approved this. You don't need the supplements. And you don't need to lost the weight that fast. The faster you lose it, the more your skin will sag, and the less time you have to get used to your new lifestyle of eating healthier. If you lose the weight too fast, you will gain it back faster. I know - I've done it before. Like one of the girls said above - they got her at the first meeting when she cried. I got emotional too, and they hooked me right in. It's amazing what a little weight loss can do for your confidence. I am an intelligent person, who wants to lose 20 pounds to look and feel better. I can follow a plan because this is important to me. I will not be bullied, harassed, or talked into something I don't want to do, or can't afford. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourselves - it's your body and it's your money. Good luck everyone!
