Modeling Unto Death

A few weeks ago I watched a news show that highlighted the dangers of eating disorders. The show talked about negative media influence, thin models and celebrities. The magazine-style news item painted a grim picture of the current trends in eating disorders among women.

Then came the ad break and the channel loudly promoted the next show after the news.

That next show was "America's Next Top Model".

Such is the irony and the hypocrisy.

This week 21 year old Brazilian model Carolina Reston died from complications arising from Anorexia. Reston worked for such agencies as Ford and Elite.

Reston, 1.72m tall and weighing only 40kg, had been in hospital since October 25 due to a kidney malfunction. Her condition became more serious and deteriorated into a generalised infection that led to her death on Tuesday. (via The Australian).
Bizarrely - media reports are calling her Ana Carolina Reston. If this is her first name then it is one of the most strange and sad ironies.

Sufferers of anorexia frequently refer to the disorder as "Ana" (or bulimia as "mia").

What a tragic waste of life.

Dundee - I agree that the model looked grotesque in the second pic in the link you posted, but often such images have been PhotoShopped to make extremely thin models look even thinner - which is itself a very sick practice. The doctored photos often turn up on "pro-ana" sites or sensationalist media stories about eating disorders.

Somehow I doubt that that specific image was used in an advertising campaign or fashion spread - it's just too ugly.

anorexic is not something you choose to become. It is a illness that sneaks up on you, and it hard to battle it away.

i think it's sad but noone really dies from anorexia.
i weigh 38kg and get told by people i have this so called eating disorder but i feel perfectly fine, their is no proof that there really is an eating disorder bcoz their isn't it's all caused by feeling depressed or stress. models like her are idols just like nicole richie and kate moss they [...]
So I'm giving away my age, but you need to look up Karen Carpenter, a wonderful singer, who died of health complications because she was anorexic. She was one of the first celebrities that was reported as having this disease. And what makes Nicole Richie a role model? Are you in your early teens? Cause I am a grown woman and see nothing to admire her for. She has contributed nothing of real value to society. Do yourself a favor if you want to admire someone in the fashion industry, look up Madame C.J. Walker. Now she is someone to emulate.Reply
