Why Women Feel Bad

I'm not sure if these are on TV yet, but here are two Dove commercials that are - quite frankly - superbly done.

1. No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.

2. Only 2% of women feel comfortable describing themselves as beautiful.

Note: The videos are also here at the official Dove site (but they crashed my browser).

I love this new campaign. How refreshing is it to see women represented as they really are?

BTW - I'm new to your blog, but I love it!

Killer find! Brilliant ad... makes you think, rather than makes you change the channel.

This one runs in Canada, soon in mainland US.

Am I so naive that I didn't realize how much airbrushing is done? I mean, wow! I'll definitely look at magazines/ads in a different way.

It also makes me wonder about the ads that I see where women look just depressed or gaunt and disgusting. So many people working on one image and THAT'S what they decided on?

This is the best campaign to come out in a long long time! I wish it had been in existance when I was a teen. I hope that this organization branches out to target women in general as well. I am still struggling with poor body image and I know I am not alone. What can I do to help?

Finally, one big business is trying to do something about the self-esteem issues infecting our society. Hopefully, showing the illusion of "beauty" for what it really is will help a lot of women of all ages see that they are already beautiful the way they are.

I've read negative comments on other sites about Doves' campaign, saying that they're only doing it to sell their products (well, duh, if they don't sell anything they wont have money to put toward their fund). That kind of all or nothing attitude doesn't help the cause, people have to realise that to change a worldwide view takes time and effort. Good for Dove.

Fantastic advertisement. I had no idea that they could change the shape of eyebrows so easily LOL.

The transformation is shocking - but then look at the photos of Kirstie Alley as she really is compared with the promotional ones by Jenny Craig. She has body shaping underwear to make her look slim and they've airbrushed away the saggy chin!

I am so pleased with the advertisement. I was listening to a radio talk show once and they were discussing Paris Hilton's commercial for Hardees. One of the host said the parent's should be responsible to tell their children she is not a good role model and that they should not aspire to be like her. However, a teenage girl could have the best support, but will still feel inferior to the images in the media. I thank Dove for taking responsibility and realizing the impact the media truely has.

this is a GREAT commercial- the first time i saw i was really amazed- but the best time was when it came on TV and i was watching TV w/my 12 yr old daughter- who believes that all her fav celebrities really look the way the appear on magazines and tv. her eyes wanted to popped out of her face, her mouth just dropped-she couldn't believe that they can actually altered somebody's look that much !!!!-
Ads like this should be made available in schools all around the US- youngs girls in this country need a major wake up call - love your self
thanks Dove and keep them coming - :)

Frankly, I don't like the Dove ads simply because they too airbrush their models. Sure, the models are in an array of sizes, but their bodies are unnaturally smooth and cellulite-free.

This may sound stupid, but the way I got over my body image problems is my making a point of looking at myself in the mirror every day and saying out loud things along the lines of "wow! You are stunning! What a hottie! My God, you're sexy!" etc etc. After a while, you really start to believe it and see the truth in it. While I am 40 lbs overweight, I really do feel beautiful. And now I'm also trying to lose the extra weight for the right reason - To get my BMI in the "normal" range and to develop healthier eating habits, not because I have image problems.Reply

Michelle, that is wonderful advice, and yes, it does work.
