Why Men Get Fat

Check out this brochure from Domino's Pizza. While there's nothing particularly radical about this - it just highlights some of the cultural viewpoints that underpin our obesity issues.

If you are not familiar with the term "bloke" - here is one definition:

While the term, strictly speaking, only means "man", the word "bloke" has been adopted into Australasian culture to mean substantially more than that. "Blokey" culture is the stereotypically masculine culture found outside of the metropolitan areas of Australia and New Zealand, the culture in which hard work, loyalty and not showing emotion are all valuable attributes. (wikipedia)
Apparently it also means eating lots of meat and pizza...

It’s considered mainly to eat the whole pizza.
I thought this might work in selling salads.
Our you man enough for our salad. It could work :-)

I saw an ad for "NutriSystem for Men" claiming that you could eat "burgers, fries, pizza, even beer...all the manly foods you crave and STILL lose weight". Ok, so men are supposed to eat burgers and brats and women are destined to eat salads, grilled fish, and yogurts. BTW...my husband can and often does eat an entire pizza at one sitting and he isn't even fat. How much more unfair can you get?

I guess the usage of the slang "bloke" may also be an apparent jab at the vegetarian/vegan, yoga practicing, Buddhist men which are stereotyped as sissies, similar to how the Hummer vehicle is being advertised in the US lately.

What is it about consuming beef makes men feel so much more manly. Its food for goodness sake.To be more precise, when did the media fathom the idea of brainwashing society to think that steak=man. It makes me sick. How did we let them take over. Right under our noses. Did you all hear that Domino's is also having a new campaign for giving away free trans-fat filled "does your body no good" brownies! With an already greasy fatty pizza to eat beforehand. sheash....

p.s. And they are FREE! thats right, no extra charge for clogging up those arteries there..

"What is it about consuming beef makes men feel so much more manly?"

Protein, saturated and monounsaturated fat, B-vitamins, iron, and zinc. In the case of beef, there actually is evidence that it can help ensure normal testosterone levels. I overtrain much faster on chicken or fish, unless I eat them with (beef) liver tablets.

beef = meaty, you know how meaty can be associated with an outstanding physique, muscular, manly, and more mundane carnal thoughts.

The trouble is, we're talking about pizza (frequently washed down with a few beers). The beef in this thing ain't quite like a tender lean cut of sirloin.

As an Australian, I wanted to point out that there are plenty of true-blue blokes within the metropolitan areas of Australia and New Zealand. (Note to self: Must email Wikipedia).

Being a bloke also involves drinking lots of beer.

I must be a man then, cause I love steak. In fact when I look at that picture, I don't crave pizza, but I feel like buying a big slab of beef and making a roastbeef.

It's stereotyping at its best. Speaking of the "NutriSystem for Men" commercial Spectra mentioned, has anyone else noticed that almost all the "successful" guys on that commercial mention that their sex life improved when they lost weight? And, the "NutriSystem for Women" commercials tout that women can still eat chocolate.

The media would have us believe that all men care about is meat and sex! And, in turn, all women want is chocolate! (Well, that last part may be true LOL)

That is pathetic! [Shakes head in disbelief]

Actually, it is just marketing that works. Men and women, in general, do not always respond to the same triggers.

And yes - generalities are important here. Advertising would cost too much to target those that do not meet what is found "in general". Besides, why do men and women have to be the same?

Food companies have long been successful in targeting various demographics, whether it is age groups, racial groups or gender. Even sexual orientation has been a focus for some advertising (think IKEA promoting to same-sex couples).

I was surprised when I saw the NutriSystem advertising to men - not because they were targeting men, but because I realized other diet companies have not done it yet.

Seems like if you don't do the things commonly thought of as "blokey", you will be different from the other men around you, and may not be accepted. So, eat until you feel sick, your mates will worship you for it!

As a kiwi girl with a fair bit of experience of "blokes", I have to add that as well as scoffing whole pizzas and gulping down beer, it is almost mandatory for one to sport a beer gut, the bigger the better(you just can't be a real bloke without one), and also to oogle every woman who walks by, not to mention the obsession with cars and sport.

And, yes, they can certainly be found within the metropolitan areas, however the level of "blokiness" rises significantly the further from the city you get. And people wonder why I married a foreigner?

Fast food does target men. Its really sad. I gave it up 2 years ago and lost a ton of weight. Im almost 17, 5'11 and weigh 125lbs. It is possible not to be a fat ass!
