Enviga: Tea That Burns Calories?

Coca-cola are about to launch their new tea drink - Enviga. They claim that the tea will burn an extra 60-100 calories per day.

The drink is a joint venture with Nestlé and apparently they have "studies" to back up the claims.

Studies have shown that when EGCG and caffeine are present at the levels comparable to that in three cans of Enviga, healthy subjects in the lean to normal weight range can experience an average increase in calorie burning by 60 – 100 calories.
Reading between the lines here - it doesn't say that Enviga burns calories. It says that Green Tea Extract and caffeine burn calories - so perhaps it all comes down to the other ingredients in the drink (which we don't know yet).

Why did they only test on lean to normal weight range? That doesn't make sense at all.

The drink contains 90mg of the Green Tea antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). It comes in three flavors - berry, peach, and green tea - and will begin hitting shelves in November.

There are a number of other drinks that make similar claims - Celsius, Jana Skinny Water, and Fuze Slenderize.

UPDATE: Enviga contains exactly 5 calories per 12oz can. This indicates that it is not sweetened with sugar or HFCS or similar. Unfortunately their site does not yet provide a full and thorough ingredients list.

UPDATE 2: Here is the ingredients list.
Carbonated water, calcium lactate, concentrated green tea from tea leaves, citric acid, phosphoric acid, potassium sorbate and potassium benzoate, natural flavors, aspartame, caffeine (100mg), ace-k.

Those ingredients are surprisingly similar to Diet Coke.

So here's the big question: How many calories are in the can? :-D

um
caffeine makes some people hungryer so after drinking this caloerie burning drink they'll end up eating more.

They are also saying it would take three cans of Enviga to burn 60-100 calories. How many calories does it take to burn three glasses of water? ha!

Reading further between the lines:

...healthy subjects in the lean to normal weight range can experience an average increase in calorie burning...
Even if we grant there could be an effect from this magical combination, there apparently is no effect on over-normal-weight individuals -- the ones who would be most interested in burning a few extra calories.

I'm guessing it'll be a diet drink, meaning it won't have any calories in it, but it doesn't say that Enviga burns calories, it says "consuming caffeine and EGCG at levels present in Enviga" will make you burn calories. You could just drink green tea or coffee and get almost as much caffeine/antioxidants.

I'm also curious as to why they only tested it on lean/normal-weight people as opposed to overweight people.

My guess is that they did. It probably took more then three cans to burn the calories.

The only thing that will be lighter will be your wallet.

I'm one of those people iportion is talking about. Caffeine makes me hungry. I don't know why, I just know it does.
I'm not interested in gimmicks. Just in eating right, exercising and being healthy!

The drink has 10 calories.

In order to burn the extra 70-100 calories a day, you need to drink 3/day.

Now, that puts you at -30 calories to begin with. So, drinking 3 a day not only puts a negative in your wallet...but potentially only burns 40 extra calories for you? (if it even works!)

Seems like drinkin water and taking the stairs - or going for a quick 20 minutes walk at lunch time would do more than that for you - not to mention, give you a metabolism boast and be healthy for your heart - which i'm sure this drink can't offer.

interesting...

The really sad thing is, people will either not read any information about the product and buy it, or they will read it and not understand it's not going to help them a bit. Coke should be ashamed, preying on the desperate.

@noelle: Can you get me a source for the Calories or ingredients list. I couldn't find anything :-(

What a cunning scam. Most people will not read all the details to find out about harmful side effects. If it burns extra calories then people must have side effects e.g. getting hot or getting a racy feeling from the caffeine. Hmmmm. Bet it sells like hot cakes.

Is there really such a thing as negative calories? Somehow I don't think so

And I agree with an earlier poster. You can bet they tested it on overweight people and didn't like the results. Looking forward to some independent testing...

There are a few reasons I like this product. One reason is that I am a consumer of energy beverages. I love caffeine. Caffeine gives me an energy boost, reduces my appetite, makes me feel excited and it makes me sweat. Yes caffeine helps me lose water weight, especially around my period. I don't scoff about water weight loss because I'm about 70% water. When I drink a diet beverage like FUZE or Sobe Lean I remind myself that I am indeed on a diet. I sometimes need a visual and tactile reminder of that unfortunately. Taking a carb blocker or a stacker pill helps me to remember to order less carbs and to leave a little food on my plate when I eat out since I take them while reading menus. So what if I need to pay a dollar a day for some caffeine pills to remind myself to eat less? Some people pay that much or more for a gym they never remember to go to. It's worth it to me. I've lost about 60 pounds since July 2006. I work out a lot and I cut my calories as much as I can, religiously because I have a goal. 60-100 calories extra for me would make a difference, give me a change of pace from the Stackers for a diet reminder and still give me the extra boost of caffeine I need. Anti-oxidants in green tea are beneficial as well, unlike Coca-Cola beverage which is nothing but caramel color and sugar. So when my thinner friends crack open a Coke or Sprite, if I want the refreshing crack of a soda can and the thirst quenching fizz of carbonation, I will pay over a dollar for a few ounces less of sparkling tea that has a whole lot more EGCG than Arizona Tea. I think this is a good thing. I'm not banking on it to burn calories while I lie on the couch eating Twizzlers, but I will enjoy the change of pace and the tea kick just as much as when I enjoy a San Pellegrino for the same price (no tea at all just sparkling water).

This comment is for anyone taking "stackers".

My best friend took them for years. They gave her lots of energy!!! Here's the really horrible part... They eventually were the cause of her Death. She died of an aneurysm. Which is a blood vessel that burst in your brain. I'll never see her again. Except for the funeral on Wednesday. So before you take another pill.. think how your loved ones will feel when your no longer here.

I have tried enviga, and for me it seems to be making a difference. I don't know about it burning more calories, but the energy boost it gives certainly helps me exercise longer which definitely is causing me to lose weight. I know the purported 60-100 calories isn't much, but if it helps me lose a few more pounds in the year I'm not going to knock it. And the extra calcium in my diet is a bonus as well.

Enviga really does help me lose weight too! I'm seriously hooked on it . I have been very active my whole life (JO Volleyball..running, biking, walking..) and now, that I work full-time it is hard to excercise as often. I find that if I drink Enviga throughout the day, I have more energy, and can easily maintain (or lose in some cases) my weight. I only weight myself in the morning (once a day) and I've found if I go several days without drinking Enviga-I actually gain weight!

Enviga has 5 calories, not 10 as reported earlier by someone. I personally love it. It has much lower sodium that most all soft drinks and it is a great source of Calcium. I know for a fact that I eat less when I have my 15 calories/3 cans of Enviga because I keep a food journal every day. I also have completely lost taste of my previous diet drink Coke Zero ... which I formerly drank in excess each day. I am thrilled that Coke and Nestle created this energy drink. I would probably drink it even if it did not tout the 60-100 calorie burn! I have to admit however, it was that claim that prompted me to try it in the first place! I have lost weight since drinking it partially because of decreasing my sodium intake and having a decreased appetite. I also am drinking more Dasani Strawberry water ... my new 2nd favorite drink. To those of you that are skeptical ... I just have to say ... if you can afford it try it ... see what it does for you ... what have you got to lose ... but pounds!

I don't drink Enviga consistently enough to know whether or not it is contributing to my weight loss, but I will say this-- I'm a sugar-free Red Bull kinda gal because there are times when I unfortunately need the added boost of an energy drink. Enviga, however, tastes LOADS better than red bull (who doesn't love green tea?), still gives me my energy boost, and yep-- 5 fewer calories in a can of enviga than in sugar-free red bull and I could be mistaken but it seems like the portion is slightly bigger than red bull's... calcium and antioxidants to boot? Why the heck not!

I drank one this morning at 9 am and I've never been this jittery in my life. It's now nearly 5 pm and my pulse is still way above what it should be not to mention the fact that I've been trying to eat all day and still feel like i haven't eaten in days!

i do NOT recommend this drink to anyone

I also LOVEEE enviga. I dont know about the weight loss part though. I have lost weight since I have been drinking it, but who knows if its from the Enviga. I will say this, it is over priced! I would drink it more often if it was a little cheaper. Also, I notice that I do eat less on the days I have my enviga with me.

Either way, it tastes great and doesnt cause weight GAIN. Its a win/win situation. I think in the end you get a great expensive drink that will probably help you shed that last one-two pounds :)

PS- the berry and peach flavors are wayy better than the regular flavor!

I LOVE envigia.

But relize you have to drink THREE a day for it to work twords you. And for four drinks in a pack, it's way overpriced. Just drink green tea at home. It has the same effect. But don't add sugar. It defeats the purpose.

you guys are ugly...
i dont know where you live but in Cali, its 6cans per pack...
and the green tea increases the rate of metabolism and sparkling part addstaste. and if you actually drink 3 cans its like 15 calories.. it taste goood and you,, or at least i lose weight...coca cola is a business no business would sell a product with out making a catchy phrase or motive for peopel to buy the thing. Yah?

I LOVE the taste of Enviga! The only green tea drink that I can actually tolerate. I do have hard time finding it though as I'm living in a town that is ghost like (lol). This is also the ONLY energy drink I drink and I do b/c of the benefits of the green tea, nothing else. Not sure about the xtra calorie burning...don't care for that either. If I want to lose weight I go to the gym, enjoy outdoors and STOP eating so darn much! Enviga tastes GREAT!
