Weight Loss: Dentist Style

Dentists in the US are beginning to offer the DDS system - an attachment that fits into your mouth and prevents you from eating too much.

According to this dentist in Pittsburgh:

The DDS System is an entirely new way to change your eating habits. Instead of teaching you what to eat, this dental system helps teach you how to eat less. By slowing intake you give your body time to feel satisfied with less food. The custom-made DDS is worn only when eating and is nearly invisible when in place. When not being used, the DDS dental device can be carried in your purse or pocket.

The plate costs around $400-500 to install. DDS have a presentation video on-line.

It's probably a heckuva lot healthier than a gastric bypass, but it seems kinda sad and depressing somehow.

I want to like this gadget, but according to DDS, "The DDS System™ appliance trains you to take smaller bites and to eat more slowly. By slowing down your intake of food, you allow your body to feel satisfied without overeating".

That is nice, except that eating slowly and smaller bites are only better for digestion. If I eat junk, it will take longer, but I don’t seem to understand how it could help anyone lose weight or prevent consuming excess calories.

Prehaps insted of spending money for the DDS people should invest in some common sense... think about it if you decide to eat a bag of potatoe chips the number of calories your body absorbs will not depend on if it takes you ten minutes to eat it or an hour; at a slower pace. What if instead,umm- "larger" persons just stopped buying fatty foods (there's a thought) you can't eat what's not there! And if all else fails put up a baby gate in the kitchen entryway to give yourself a physical reminder that you arent hungery, most likely just bored or (like me) a habitual eater... then watch America's Next Top Modle and eat ice cubes. I know that sounds sarcastic but it really is a quite amusing past time.

Gee... how easy would it be to say "Ahhh... I don't need that thing in my mouth today. I'll just try to control myself." I would probably use it once and put it in a drawer.

haha... I was laughing when I saw this post. Putting such device would have a high chance of working. Ive read in the readers digest that if you eat slowly, the brain has enough time to tell you that your full and you stop eating.

Wakkko. It kinda makes me sad for people who feel they need to inhibit there ability to eat just to lose weight. In the long run, you can't live with a plate in your mouth for the rest of your life. Eating the right foods and being active is a change in lifestyle. I have a hard time thinking this is going to be an answer long-term for ANYONE.

I had a retainer when I had my braces off and it looked similar to that thing. It did help me eat slower when I had to wear it 24/7, but after that, I took it out whenever I could. I can imagine people buying it and using it maybe once and then deciding it doesn't work because they STILL ate the whole bag of Doritos, so they stick it in a drawer and chalk it up as another failed dieting gimmick. You can out-think any weight loss plan if you try hard enough...I know a woman who gained back much of her gastric bypass weight by drinking milkshakes and eating very calorie-dense foods and basically not really complying to any of the rules she was supposed to follow. This little DDS thingie just proves that 99% of weight loss is a mental thing, not just a physical barrier.

How hard to you think it is to talk with this thing in? Not to mention that even if it does inhibit your eating, obviously a starvation diet is not the way to go.

But of course the "eat-less and exercise" diet is never a popular solution with the masses. Unless you can think of a fancy name like "The Basalt Colorado diet"

Ha! Basalt, what a crazy town, huh?

IFitandhealthy wondered:

"That is nice, except that eating slowly and smaller bites are only better for digestion. If I eat junk, it will take longer, but I don’t seem to understand how it could help anyone lose weight or prevent consuming excess calories."

Ultimately, if you're gonna eat the whole bag of chips, no, it's not going to.

But studies show that it takes something like 20 minutes for the body to send out full signals once you begin eating (I'm not quoting a study, by the way; this is from what I've read, but there is a lag time between when you start eating and your body says "quit it"). For those who can recognize that "full" feeling and stop eating, taking smaller bites and chewing slowly will mean that when your body says "enough," you won't have already consumed the whole bag of chips, and won't have that sick stuffed feeling.

But it does require you to listen to that "full" feeling, something many of us have a hard time doing.

That said, yeah, $500 for the plate is pretty ridiculous. I just wish I'd saved my old retainer. Ewww....

It's really sad that people think this will help. As Mia-para-me said, what's wrong with investing in some commonsense? For $500, I could buy six months membership at a gym.

WOW, times are a changin! Jeez! Now, dentists are getting more in on the weight loss craze! I wonder if putting that thing in your mouth is uncomfortable. Is it like a retainer? Cause if it is, fo' getta 'bout it! I spent 2-3 yrs wearing braces and a retainer when I was a preteen and I still have not forgotten how it felt! In fact, reading this article, it's amazing how I can feel the feeling right now from that artificial stuff in my mouth many many years ago, even the braces. Funny, huh.

Thats weird. Instead of having a plate installed im my mouth, I would rather exercise or take a supplement.

hay, i don't think you should eat if you don't wont to its your choice what you do and dont eat. I recon that larger people should wake up to themselves and see sumbody about there wait problems and so should anarecsic people. The world is changing everyday we need to realise our problems, fix them and start again. Listen to someone is they are tell youo that you have a problem and that you should wake up to yourself.

Ja ja binks outies.
nice talkin to ya all
