Gym in a Bottle

The race is on for a pill that will maintain muscle mass.

A number of research groups have identified the genes responsible for muscle wasting. While there may be valid medical applications for such drugs - I can almost hear a collective sigh from exercise-haters worldwide.

Imagine a drug that maintains muscle mass -- without lifting weights?

One of the researchers readily acknowledges "...there is a potential for abuse of these drugs,".

The research seems to be in it's very early stages - although pharmaceutical company Regeneron have already isolated genes called "atrogin1" and "muRF1" (via BBC).

Is this the stuff of science fiction?

For better or for worse, nope, this is not science fiction. We're closer that you might think to just turning on muscle building genes too. Imagine suddenly getting the genetic potential of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Exercise-haters are not going to gain much from this. What is there to maintain if one does not have the muscle mass to start with? Genetic potential of the "Oak"? Genetic potential or not, one would still need to work hard at it, or end up looking like this http://ifitandhealthy.com/wp-content/images/the-oak.jpg

Even though this is hard to believe, it sounds like one of the biggest break throughs in body building history. I am a smaller body type so this would be a great advantage for people like me.

Weight Loss: This actually isn't such a big breakthrough, for bodybuilding at least. If you're eating your 6 meals a day, with protein at each meal, and stimulating your muscles enough, then this will not help you at all. You should never be in a state where your body would even consider wasting muscle.

If you're an ectomorph, which is what I think you mean by "small body type", I can almost guarantee you you're not eating enough unless you're counting your calories. One of the best ways to succeed is modeling: find someone that was in your situation that succeeded and do what they did. Again, assuming you're an ectomorph, try Anthony Ellis' "Gaining Mass!" or Sean Nalewanyj's "Truth About Gaining Muscle" or both. They were both small people who found a way to really grow.

I'm not an exercise hater-- I love it... but this is fascinating for me anyhow.

I want to lose as little muscle as possible while dieting. Hard thing to manage...

There are supplements out there that are fairly cheap and completely harmless. L-Glutamine is one that helps the body avoid cannabalising lean muscle tissue, for example. This is a naturally ocurring amino acid which you are supplementing NOT an externally created dangerous chemical.

I think any product that says it can make you lose weight, gain muscle, maintain muscle without a reasonably healthy diet or exercise routine is blatantly false advertising and not safely possible with the current biological setup of the human species.

If such products do exist or are invented soon, its pretty likely that on many, many levels, they will be extremely dangerous for the human metabolism and should be avoided at all costs until they have undergone several years worth of testing for almost guaranteed serious side effects in the medium-long term.

I would also like to add, that ONLY in an emergency or potentially life saving medical situation should such drugs be used, assuming they are invented safely and in a timely fashion. Which is unlikely. They should be strictly controlled. The last thing the world needs is a "proven" way of avoiding healthy eating and exercise.
