The Maple Syrup Diet Fad

Celebrity + weight loss + unusual product = instant fad.

Beyoncé Knowles claims she lost 20 pounds by consuming a concoction made up of maple syrup, lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. Of course it's not just any maple syrup but an organic "Madal Bal Natural Tree" syrup (UK distributor / USA distributor). Consequently sales of the product are soaring (src).

The maple syrup is part of a "detox" or fast.

According to Beyonce:

"I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying."

These kind of diets are foolhardy indeed, and it is not the first time that maple syrup has been mentioned by someone of celebrity status.

Without laboring the point - living on a maple syrup concoction for days on end will probably leave you: weak, with less muscle, a lot less glycogen (in the form of fluid loss), and probably very grumpy. Give this a wide berth.

What did Beyonce do after enduring her maple syrup ordeal?

"After that I ate waffles, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, everything I could find.

"That was the best time of my life. I've gained twelve pounds."

I'm starting the cleanse tomorrow. Got some cheap version of the ingredients so I'll check back to say if it worked or not. I plan to stop in ten days, if I can make it that long. I think the amount of weight that you lose has to partly do with how old you are and your body type. It varies for all people, so if you dont see results right away, it might take a while. You also have to be doing the cleanse the correct way. I'll try to write back to say how I feel and how much weight I've lost so people who want to start the cleanse because of whatever reason, I can give you updates.

Another few questions???

It's really unfair to call this cleanse a fad. It is doing a world of good for people with toxicity issues and digestion issues and for you to write poorly, inaccurately and with such judgment, dissuades people from trying it who might really need it. Diet, by the way, is a term used in our country to mean -lose weight- when in fact, just because something is called a diet doesn't mean it had ANYTHING to do with weight. It has to do with getting all the nutrients you need. It's not just about eliminating things from your intake, but about ADDING what you need (once you understand the way your body works and what your body is asking of you and which foods will bring your body to health). A healthy pudgy person is far more hot than a skinny unhealthy person, if you hadn't noticed. It's about getting healthy -and this diet that helps you clean your liver of toxins (ie. sugar, caffiene, alcohol, and allergens) can help an unhealthy person get there. People also tend to lose weight, but that's a side-effect. Losing weight is NOT the point of the diet. That's why it's called a "cleanse". Please be responsible when you put out biased information like this on the web. There are sick people who could use this cleanse who will not use it now because you used the word "fad". You could spend your energy HELPING people, instead of hurting them.

This really bugs me. All of this negative commentary is based on the misconception that this is a crash diet and it's NOT! It's a CLEANSE! People who go on this program for the wrong reasons (ahem...losing weight) don't last long enough to miss dinner. In fact, if anyone bothered to research the topic, they would realized that very overweight people are told to "take it easy" and it's actually suggested that they try a raw food diet first. Losing weight is a happy side effect for some people, and it's made very clear that more than half of the weight loss is water weight that will and should come back. For those of us that understand the purpose of a cleanse though, weightloss is far from the objective. If you want to form an educated opinion, read the book Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs.

oh stop being so negative, some people WANT to lose weight fast. and you can be sensible after you hav done the detox. you exercise during the diet so ur metabolism is still at its peak and after the detox you can start to juice fruit and veg (so u dont hav bad stomach cramps fom cramming in food) then go onto eat soups and things with lumps in. this detox will clense u of crap you useually eat which are man - made badness, and also make u think about how many calories your taking in and control your food in take after it. i started mine today and im well excited about it!! so try it before you negative input

day 1 of the detox diet:
well i have found that i don't feel any different to a usual monday actually.
that would be i guess because usually on a monday i wouldn't have time for brekky.
and wouldn't eat til the boys i work with have smoko at ten.
consequently, 10am everyday is going to be the hardest.
my boss has a toasted ham & cheese roll.
the boys have chips.
and hot dogs.
and bacon & egg burgers.
i order it for them via fax.
then the deli delivers it to the office
so the smell is gonna get me down.
i will admit i had half a cigarette this morning at 7.20.
which is bad i guess, cos its meant to be no chemicals.
but i figure its bludy hard to go cold turkey from everything!!!
and pretty much 99.9% of the time, i only have a cigarette because i've eaten something.
unless i'm drinking of course.
so if i'm not eating, the cravings should disappear completely.
i probably should have waited til tomorrow to start, as after the weekend you do truly feel like a bus has hit you 18 times
and food is your only salvation
but pffffffffft. no bludy monday is gonna be any good.
and its only one day!!!
home time is definitely gonna be hard too as i'm the only one in my house on the detox. and everyone is having a dinner party tonight with lots of beer - i'll just have to go home and shut my door i reckon, go to bed early.
i just ordered a 1.5 litre water to make the mixture in.
its nice - but imagine being on an empty stomach, with that feeling in your throat, like you could yak. and then trying to force down this sickly sweet concoction. i'm probably gonna be more sticking with water.
i had a friend who did it for 5 days, but did not drink enough water - by the end of it, her skin was really lumpy on her face - all the crap trying to get out.

Jared Leto did this so-called diet. He lost 26lbs in 10days and ended up with gout as a result of it. I'm sorry but for a "diet" that makes you get a painful disease such as this, then it is not a healthy option in any way shape or form. Just do the healthy thing and dirnk plenty of water and cut out the crap you eat. It's not difficult.

im only 15.. when..throughout the past year i've gained 20 pounds. probably from being depressed and eating all the time
i really just want to be the size i used to be
food is the only thing that's ever on my mind
i dont want to lower my metabolism and get all the weight back when i start eating
but i need some help!

NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! NOTHIN IS WRONG WITH BEYONCE'S HEAD AND SHE DOESNT WANT TO BE A STICK FIGURE!! SHE HAD TO GO ON THE DIET AS PART OF HER PREPARATION FOR THE ROLE OF DEENA JONES IN DREAMGIRLS. SHE REALLY WANNTED TO PORTRAY THE CHARACTER AND THE YOUNGER DEENA JONES WAS A TEENAGER AND THINNER (AS MOST TEENS ARE) WHICH YOU WILL SEE IN THE FILM. WHICH IS WHY SHE COUDNT WAIT TO FILM THAT PART AND GET OFF THE DIET SO THAT SHE CAN GET HER CURVES BACK AND START EATING AGAIN. YES, I AGREE THAT A LOT OF CELEBS ARE WARPED WHEN IT COMES TO WEIGHT, BUT BEYONCE IS NOT ONE OF THEM.

I have discovered the most amazing way to detoxify and lose fat and keep it off. The technology was developed by a brilliant formulator ( he formulated more than 2,500 nutritional supplements for private labels before retiring; some of the best on the market) The system is amazing because the cleanse feeds you while detoxifying so your body is not becoming depleted in any way.

I have done the lemon/maple syrup one and did lose weight very quickly but also lost calcium which took some time to replensh. And the weight did not stay off.

This is an anti-diet. You detoxify and as a side effect lose fat as fat adheres to toxins, so once you get rid of one the other goes and rather rapidly. But since you are feeding your body the entire time you feel so well. The nutrition in this far surpasses the best organic meal you could eat.

I feel well and have far more energy than I ever have had. Many people lose disease as they do this program because much disease is directly related to toxins in their body. This system enables the body to be the miracle it was intended to be.

It really is amazing. The company is called Isagnix and my email is joydyck@gmail.com

Hello,

I am the owner of the company that is the US distributor of the Madal Bal Syrup that Beyonce used to do the diet. We call the diet Neera Super Cleanse, neera means palm syrup in India, which is the really better than maple syrup for doing the diet. It is much more nutritious.

This diet really works and while it is considered a fad right now, it has actually been around for more than 30 years. Stanley Burroughs wrote the Master Cleanser / Lemonade diet book in the early 70's.

There are 1000's of case studies where people have used the diet to cure a large variety of ailments from ulcers to heart disease and their is increasing scientific evidence that shows that occasional fasting diets like the Neera Super Cleanse / Master Cleanser are very beneficial.

Of course it is popular for weight loss and it really works for that too, but the weight loss is almost a side benefits. Please go to our web site for more information on the diet and let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely Yours,

Hi Charlie,

Where I get suspicious is when people claim that there is somehting "magical" about a particular ingredient and touts that ingredient as the "key" to weight loss/improved health, etc.

I just poked around the site you mentioned, Charlie and I don't see any peer-review journals that support what you claim. Perhaps I wasn't looking in the right place? I did find studies showing positive benefits of intermittent fasting/calorie restriction which does have some therapeutic value. I didn't, however see any studies that your special maple syrup is in any way correlated with improved health outcomes.

If one were to read those studies, one may conclued that they need to eat less and exercise to enjoy health benefits. Voila! No expensive syrup needed!

Now let's talk toxins...

Which toxins are you purportedly ridding people of with your cleanse?

What would be great, Chuck is if you could provide me with a before/after bloodwork of people who did your cleanse. The study would clearly need to demonstrate an absence of the toxins (whichever ones you claim we are all housing).

In essence, what you are trying to sell us is a very low calorie diet - one that is not sustainable for continued health and energy.

And jeepers, creepers Chuck!!! $131 for a bottle of syrup, an instruction manual, a couple of boxes of tea and 3 containers of cayenne pepper! I guess 1/2 the weight people lose is out of their wallets!

I can go to my local grocery store and get all those items for less than $20.

I hope you'll stick around as these boards are about opinions and we welcome yours.

Hi Mike H. and all,

Thanks for your comments Mike. We don't have case studies specifically about the diet. The thing with the Master Cleanser diet is that there isn't a lot of money to be made so most companies involved in it can't afford expensive cases studies.

The studies we list on our news page are peer studies, about low calorie diets and fasting diets with people and animals. The most impressive studies so far have been done with mice. The mice fasted every other day but were allowed to gorge themselves on the days they did eat. Even though they ended up eating almost the same amount of calories as the mice that ate every day, they really gorged themselves, the fasting mice lived up to 40% longer, and had less chance of developing diabetes, hear disease, Parkinson’s disease and cancer. The two studies I refer to in particular where done at UC Berkeley and LSU. There is a new study just being released that shows people who fast once per month have less chance of developing heart disease. I just posted a link to this on our news page:

http://www.neerasupercleanse.com/pages/news.asp

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=email_en&refer=canada&sid=anh7oYgYKPDo

The theory that comes out of all this research is that when the body is not having to digest solid food the energy that the body normally uses on digestion (around 25-30%) is redirected toward cellular rejuvenation and healing. Some theorize that this part of the body’s natural healing process and that in modern times we have gotten away from that since we eat all the time. Remember, for over 95% of the time that we humans have been on earth, we were hunters and gatherers (before agriculture 6000 years ago) and there were rotating periods of no food and periods of plenty, just like animals in the wild.

About toxins, yes the body normally expels toxins all the time, and “toxins” is a rather generic term. Our bodies metabolic processes create toxins all the time that are constantly expelled, but when you add environmental toxins that we are constantly exposed to and toxins created from all the processed foods that don’t get properly digested in the body it can create a back load. When people give their body a chance to rest during the cleanse, so many of them notice their body expelling what can only be described as toxins.

About the price, the Madal Bal Syrup does cost more than maple but not as much as you claim. The $131 dollars you mentioned above is enough for 15 days for 3 liters of Madal Bal Syrup (organic but not certified), 2 boxes of organic herbal laxative tea and 3 ounces of organic cayenne pepper and the new and improved booklet. It would be hard to find ONE liter of organic grade C maple syrup for under $25.

So yes we are more but I think it’s worth it. I would say I have probably talked in person to at least 100 people who have done the diet with maple syrup and then used ours and said they would never go back to maple syrup. The Madal Bal Syrup is so much more nutritionally rich and makes the diet easier and improves results. If that’s all you are going to live on for 15 days I think it’s affordable. Most people spend more than that on food in a week.

I hope we can continue this dialogue. I think this web site is very helpful.

Best Regards,
Charlie Rebich

Mr. Safety

I'm with Sassy. This is not a diet aimed at losing weight. It is a cleansing regimen.

It is NOT a myth. Your body stores toxins all throughout itself. It does this, becausein present day, they accumulate too fast to remove naturally. Part of the job of blood cells is to remove these toxins from your body. A toxin can be anything from carbon dioxide to pesticides to alcohol to mercury. For instance, red blood cells carry carbon dioxide to your lungs for exhalation. They carry many other toxins to your liver and kidneys. Some toxins are even erradicated through the skin (sweating, salt baths, etc.).

Your bloods cells closely monitor the toxicity level of your blood, and if it becomes too high, they begin storing it elsewhere in the body, to reduce that toxicity - skin, organs, etc. What happens then is that your body cannot keep up with the overload, and these toxins store up over time.

The goal of the master cleanse program (as well as most other forms of fasting) is not to lose weight. In fact, with juice fasts you are to ensure you are drinking enough juice to keep your calorie intake at just below normal levels (a regular diet level). There are a few goals:

1. Reduce the intake of toxins so that your body can eradicate stored up toxins.

2. Give the digestive system a rest. Our digestive systems become clogged up over time (which is why most people over 40 have had a colonoscopy). The lining of your stomach and intestines get lined with plaque and other substances, and becomes less efficient. One comment above mentions that reducing calorie intake will slow the metabolism. This is true, however - if this is done properly (not like Beyonce), when you finish the detox, you slowly work your way back to solid foods - like over the course of 6-8 days. Once you are back, your digestive system is more efficient, and since your stomach has also shrunk - you eat less - making your sluggish metabolism not matter. With a high fiber diet with a good portion of protein and a little exercise, you can easily nurse your metabolism back to normal - and have a much healthier diet than you did previously.

3. Move toward a healthier life style. See above paragraph.

The program requires self control (as shown by Mariam), and you have to work your way into it. As another person mentioned, shocking your body is bad. That is why day 1 is no meats/caffeine. Day 2, less sugar and refined carbohydrates (no meats/caffeine still - each day ADDS to the prior). Day 3 vegetables and fruits only for meals, lots of water and juices. Day 4, only 2 meals worth of veggies, a lot of juices (start taking the master cleanse conction here). Day 5, fruit juices, master cleanse, water, and maybe fresh made veggie broth. This is when the actual fast begins - you go about 10 days on just these, drinking the master cleanse 3 times daily. Then, as I said before, you slowly work out of the diet. At the end you will have lost weight, but even upon resuming a more regular diet, you will CONTINUE to lose weight. Your body will be better at procssing your fuel, and your new, healthier you will stay that way. Last time I did this program, I lost 5 lbs DURING the fast, and an additional 15 lbs in the 3 months following. I try to fast twice yearly - and at the end of each, I feel and look much better.

the only reason people gain more weight when the get off the detox is becuase the go back to eatting whatever they want. Like fast food and things that aren't good for you any way. What else would you except. if you want to keep the weight off you should try eatting better. thats why you did the detox in the first place to be healthy. not to loose weight and then pig out. it works if you actually try.

Wow, it amazes me how angry some people can be on these comment pages.

I stand by the Master Cleanse and our product the Neera Super Cleanse. I know it is controversial and there is disagreement within the medical community. Some doctors don't believe in it but that is mostly because it goes against the grain of mainstream western medicine.

I have literally talked with hundreds of people who have had incredible results with it. Some don't, I'll admit it's not for everyone, but for most people it is really great.

There are a few studies about the benefits of low calorie diets and fasting and only a few because there isn't a lot of money to be made in promoting it like there is in the pharmaceutical industry. Like anything new there is always some controversy about it but in time I am sure the Master Cleanse will become accepted. Already thousands of people are doing it.

I have listed some of the studies on our web site: www.NeeraSuperCleanse.com/News

I started the detox at 8:30am on 21.1.08. and finished it at 3:30 on 21.1.08. Now, im not weak willed ( I get up at 6:30 every morning and go to the gym before work mon - fri ) and normally i will stick to something i start, especially if its cost a few quid! I didnt attempt this 'detox' to lose weight, i did it because i wanted to rid my body of these nasty toxins that the promotional material mentioned!! Reason i gave it up so soon, simple... its the most awful tasting 'drink' i have ever tried! I mixed it exactly to the instructions and put it in the fridge ready for the 'off' on mon morn. I managed to drink 4 glasses, how i wasnt sick is a minor miracle. its disgusting and how i wish id have looked into it more before parting with my hard earned cash! i foolishly read only the comments on the advertising website and in a sunday magazine, i should have looked at some of the comments that others were making, most of them said it was foolhardy and a waste of time anyway!! Of course your gonna lose weight if you dont bloody eat!! But.. like i said before, that wasnt my primary objective. If you're considering this detox, think long and hard... u need a throat lined with asbestos, a tongue with no taste buds and a blocked nose! ( it stinks ). To think, i was really looking forward to the challenge and the cleansing of my system!

I started the MC on Monday the 21st of January. Boy, was that a long, hard day. I thought I could sip that stuff but quickly found that to chug it down and drink water right away helped. I drink 6 glasses a day as I want to lose weight. I lost 5.8lbs in two days...ok, ok, I know alot of it is water but you have to start somewhere and start I did. This is one of the most difficult things I've ever done!!! But I figure if I can do one day, I can do two days...and on and on. I have a friend who did it for 23 days and lost 40lbs. He's kept all of it off except about 5lbs (probably that water again) and it has been one year. Come on people, you have to eat well after this and eat a lot less than all the massive amounts people eat and all the garbage (High Fructose Corn Syrup is poison!)

Anyway, is there anyone out there who has started this recently that I can commiserate with? This is a bear, but I am going to do it...it is my gift to me. I turn 50 in mid February. I plan to do 20 days which will end Feb.10th. I weighed 169 at start and my goal is to lose 39lbs. and weigh 130 when I finish. Then when I start to eat and gain that 'water' back I'll be the 135 that is my present to me! Wish me luck!!

And I exercise everyday! This is very important to keep muscles building and make what is lost be the fat. I use the treadmill for 30 min. (Walk 2 min. then run fast for 1 min. This interval training is very helpful and makes the time go by fast. I also do resistance training and when I get bored with this I will go back to Pilates for awhile. Also I try to be nice to myself and give myself a nap if I need it, watch a movie, read, or just 'be'. This is stressful so go easy on yourself. Good luck to all of you who are doing this. And you don't need to buy any expensive syrup...just use real stuff that is pure.

Did you do the master cleanse and did it help you loose weight and then were you able to keep it off? I’m almost 49 years old and would love to loose down to a size 8 or maybe six. I am now a 12-14. I so want my old (younger) body back.

I started it yesterday (5/11/09). I hope this works!

Day 4 I lost 1.8lbs since yesterday and 7.6lbs so far. This is really very hard to do. I want to quit all the time!!!!!!! I think it is really important to exercise during this or you will lose muscle and that is not good at all. I also drink decaf green tea like its going out of style! And I take all my vitamins and supplements, I don't care...they can't be bad for you. Well, go to go and exercise!
IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE???? I'd love to hear how its going for you!
