The Maple Syrup Diet Fad
Celebrity + weight loss + unusual product = instant fad.
Beyoncé Knowles claims she lost 20 pounds by consuming a concoction made up of maple syrup, lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. Of course it's not just any maple syrup but an organic "Madal Bal Natural Tree" syrup (UK distributor / USA distributor). Consequently sales of the product are soaring (src).
The maple syrup is part of a "detox" or fast.
According to Beyonce:
"I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying."
These kind of diets are foolhardy indeed, and it is not the first time that maple syrup has been mentioned by someone of celebrity status.
Without laboring the point - living on a maple syrup concoction for days on end will probably leave you: weak, with less muscle, a lot less glycogen (in the form of fluid loss), and probably very grumpy. Give this a wide berth.
What did Beyonce do after enduring her maple syrup ordeal?
"After that I ate waffles, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, everything I could find.
"That was the best time of my life. I've gained twelve pounds."

ReplyI read about this "detox plan" in Briadl magazine not long ago. It was down as being a "diet" and an extremely quick way to lose a lot of weight in a short space of time (i.e. just before your wedding).
Although my wedding is not until next year, I have decided to start my weight loss plan now and I am doing this detox as a way to lose a large amount of weight as a "kick start" into my long term diet plan. I know very well that this diet, like any other, will not work as it is only a temporary solution - but that is why I am carrying on a sensible, healthy eating plan when I have finished this detox. This is just a way of losing all the crap and excess weight before I start the normal healthy eating plan to keep the weight off.
I did actually read up on this detox a lot before I considered it. Doctors actually RECOMMEND going on this as the detox is just that - a detox that cleanses the body of blocked pores, spots, grimy skin, excess weight, water retention and the remainder of crap from bad food. AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT DO THIS DETOX FOR MORE THAN 14 DAYS, Doctors say it is perfectly healthy and they even go as far as to say it is "good for you". Apparently it makes your teeth and bones stronger, nails less brittle, hair shinier and skin more glowing as well as losing excess weight. Therefore, I have now rpoblems with using it whatsoever. As doctors have pointed out, it is perfectly normal and healthy fro humans to fast - we fast for nine months in the womb on only a liquid diet and that does us no harm. Also, people of different faiths fast all the time for the religions and Jesus fasted in the dessert for 40 days and nights - it is proven that fasting is healthy and good for you as long as you do not do it for long periods of time.
As long as people are aware that this can only be used if they are wanting to change their lifestyle (no diet ever works - once you come off it and go back to eating whatever you want again the weight will wlays come back on) then there is nothing wrong with i at all. Just don't use this as a diet if once you've lost the weight and finished the detox you're only going to go back to eating take away food, sweets, chocolate and bad things again because you'll only be disappointed.
Replyim starting on the 27th also =)
im kind of scared actually..the family was just talking about what we are having for dinner tomorrow.. i will be having a drink..hahaha
i just opened the tin..it doesnt smeel nor taste too bad..i'm sure ill grow accustomed to it...
ill keep you guys updated!
p.s what does the ceyenne pepper do?
ReplyYou can see the difference in Beyonce's figure if you have their Destiny's Child World Tour Concert DVD and compare it with their Destiny Fulfilled Atlanta Tour DVD which was around the time she was shooting Dreamgirls. Her thighs were not as big as they were five years ago. This THING might work for me...
ReplyWell I am starting this diet today, Monday 30 April. I HATE the drink I have to admit, it's not too bad - it tastes like liquoirce. The only problem is I have never liked liqorice! I am very determined though.
ReplyBeyonce did this diet to lose weight for the movie Dream Girls. Even she says she would not recommend this as a good diet. I believe it is good for detoxing the body maybe three days max but really bad for dieting.
ReplyI have successfully completed the "master cleanse" and it is NOT a diet, rather a whole body detox plan that you follow for a minimum of 10 days and can safely follow for up to 40 days. Contrary to popular belief, you won't die if you skip a meal or if you skip meals altogether for 10-40 days! I considered this detox to rid my body of toxins after I found out I had "silent stones" (gall stones); it worked! Regardless...everyone has their own perspective of health, diets and detox, this is probably not for everyone, but it is SAFE and effective if you go on it for the right reasons (I don't speak for anyone's intentions other than my own). This is not, however, a solution to dieting and should not be utilized as such. As a true benefit to the Master Cleanse I did drop weight and I felt wonderful while on the diet; not weak, not cranky...it was a great experience. The trick is to maintain a healthy digestive system once off the cleanse, which takes several days and there is a special process to follow. On any plan, if you end it by eating waffles, junk food, fried chicken and high sugar fatty foods, you'll gain weight, duh! There is NOTHING wrong with an effective detox plan that helps lower cholestrol and rids the body of stored up junk...a positive side effect is weight loss. If you're looking for a quick way to lose weight, this is NOT the plan...nothing is because there is no "QUICK FIX"! Long live the Master Cleanse!!!!
Replymy sister got me into this maple syrup and lemon juice detox. The first time she did it she passed out at work but she lost 10 pounds. she talked me into doing it. i did it for eight hours and thats it. I was snapping at everything and everyone. Now i am on CLEAN START cleansing. With this one i can eat which is GREAT.
ReplyI am starting this cleanse tomorrow. I have bursitis and severe allergies to your average airborne particles and also some foods. I have heard this cleanse helps with those types of issues. I'm not gonna lie, losing a few pounds is up there on my agenda as well! A few questions though. Can you take any meds i.e. ibuprofen, while on the fast? Should you drink water outside of what you already consuming in the concoction? What about using epsom salt instead of the tea? What will happen if you are a smoker?
ReplyHI THERE i quit smoking for like a week... and did the lemon detox (but i ate lightly after the first day) felt great! i only did it for 3 days. then i really started my workout.. then i started smoking again but continued my workout... yesterday i started my lemon died again for the weekend i try to do it every other week for like 3 days..anyway.. my point is this: MY HEAD IS KILLING ME! quit smoking.. it does not help. in my experience, to put toxins in your body while trying to detox. i have splitting migrains for the past 2 days. and when i do go for a smoke they get WAY worse and never let up. i am going to continue my lemon but im not going to smoke.
Replythis is patti from philadelphia in jan07 i lost 21 ibs in 21 days with the maple lemmon pep.clence i will post before and after pictures soon.ps i still did not gain the wt back. this is now may 07
ReplyWell day one was a success. I have done nothing other than drink this delightful concoction all day. I currently have a pounding headache and feel slightly nauseous. However, I have not really been hungry. Watching others gorge themselves on chimichangas, corndogs, and Macaroni Grill hurts my soul, but I am determined! Any advice from the peanut gallery on what to expect next?
ReplyUm...no offense, sweetie, but if this is giving you a "pounding headache", making you nauseous, and "hurting your soul", why are you doing it? I'm really not trying to be critical, but it's just upsetting to hear that someone is feeling so badly and has turned to starving as the answer.
ReplyI tried the lemonade diet for 1 day and got really sick. I had the worst headache of my life and I also vomit. I wanted to stay on the fast for 10-12 days for a upcomming beach wedding, but I never felt so sick in my life! I was dissapointed because I was determined to stay on it. Since then I have only ate raw food and water, but I still want to loose weight for the wedding and im not sure I will losse any weight by then. Im tempted to try again since so many people have seen results, but im not sure cause I never want to get that sick again!!!
Replyi tried the diet last week, i just drank that maple syrup with water, lemon caynne pepper i felt very sick and vomited, and worse headache of my life. im scared to strat the diet again but im thinking of having fruit and trying the diet, i dont hink i could survive just on maple syrup.

i have just ordered this product and am extremely eager to see if it works and what the effects etc are and what happeneds afterwards.
Replywatch this space!
I have done this detox whenever I have felt the need to do it over the last 5 years - sometimes for a couple of days or the 10 days depending how I am feeling. I am about to start it again as I have bloating and flatulence and when I have finished this in 10 days my body will be back to normal and I will fell wonderful again. My normal rountine is not interupted, I swim and go to the gym as usual.
ReplyI bought the syrup today and have stocked up on all the lemons and cayanne pepper and ginger powder... I looked like a proper fool at the supermarket with 10 lemons in my basket! Anyway, I made up the drink this evening to keep in the fridge and take to work with me tomorrow. I want to do the cleanse for at least 10 days and hopefully I'll be exercising at least 4 days a week, I'm thinking of doing pilates and hula hooping and walking to work which takes me about 45 minutes.
I'm really looking forward to completing the detox, I've only ever done them for 3 days on and off for the past 2 years. I think the detox is a great way to show determination and resillience.
I'll keep you guys updated as to how I'm getting on. Wish me luck.
ReplyI'm on Day 2, and so far so good, no cravings, no hunger, the cayenne and maple syrup smell horrible, so I've opted to take them as a shot as then drinking the lemon water right after, (it works and so much more tolerable) Anyway I wondered if anyone knows if you can use "True Lemon" packets. They have them at whole foods, and I've checked out the ingredients, it seems to be just crystalized lemon or lemon extract. If you do know if they can be used..how many packets per drink serving?
On a side note, I worked for a nutrionist for a while that used a "Liver Cleanse" detox, he used to allow clients to use True Lemon, so I hope someone knows if I can...squeezing these lemons is dull, and I feel like my juicer wastes a lot of the juice.
Oh also, can I do the SWF on the weekends and drink the tea during the week? or do you have to stay consistant with what you're using?..I've heard the SWF works fairly rapidly but very all of a sudden, I would hate be stuck in morning traffic or delay getting to work.
ReplyHow's it going everyone. I'm on day three of the detox.
Oh my god, yesterday was the worst day ever! I had a horrendous headache all day. The salt water REALLY does work by the way, I don't know if the lax tea had anything to do with it as well. Without giving out too much info it would be fair to say it's like peeing out the other hole. Not nice. I had mad cravings for crisps yesterday. It was painful.
It's 10.30 here and I'm not feeling so bad today, just the usual rush to the ladies room...
As long as the drink mix is chilled, it's actually not that bad, it's quite refreshing. All in all so far so good, I could do without the frequent trips to the loo!
ReplyI think a lot of you are missing the point...it is not meant as a long term diet for weight loss...it was designed as a detox system...It is not meant as a permanent solution to a weight issue...While not necessary to detox, that is what we have a liver and kidneys, it is believed by some to rid out bodies of excessive wastes and toxins....when you think about what we take into our bodies (fat, grease, carbonation), is it any wonder that some believe that we need to assist our bodies by going through a detox program...everyone knows that the best way to lose wieght is eat right and excersie (as has been proven time and time again), but for those of us who need a quick fix (like for a wedding in a month :) ) this is just a quick solution, not a permanent fix...just like Beyonce.
Replyok well, i decided to do this and i really want it to work but can i use maple syrup instead of buying the expensive one.
ReplyI'm going 2 do this diet and im 15 i think its great however people have 2 be aware of the possible health risks. also at the end of the day its 'the media' how do we know its true, beyonce could have been doing many other things to help her get so slim.
ReplyHi!
I am now on day 6 of the Master Cleanser Detox and I feel absolutely great! I have plenty of energy to go to the gym every night after work, and I actually love the taste of the lemonade. I haven't been doing the SWF because it stays too long in my system and interupts my work day. Haha.
When I first read about this I didn't know how I would make it to day 10, but actually my new plan is to make it through June 1st (the day I move into my new apartment). That will have given me 16 days on the detox.
My tongue is super white, and I am continuing to have at least 2 BM's everyday so hopefully I will start to be cleansed of all my toxins soon.
Oh, and I also started at a weight of 190 (I am 5' 10") I will not be weighing myself until after I am completely through with the detox
ReplyPurpose
To dissolve and eliminate toxins and congestion that have formed in any part of the body.
To cleanse the kidneys and the digestive system.
To purify the glands and cells throughout the entire body.
To eliminate all unusable waste and hardened material in the joints and muscles.
To relieve pressure and irritation in the nerves, arteries, and blood vessels.
To build a healthy blood stream.
To keep youth and elasticity regardless of our years.
When to Use It
When sickness has developed - for all acute and chronic conditions
When the digestive system needs a rest and a cleansing.
When overweight has become a problem.
When better assimilation and building of body tissue is needed.
How Long and Often?
Follow the diet for a minimum of 10 days or more - up to 40 days and beyond may be safely followed for
extremely serious cases. The diet has all the nutrition needed during this time. Three to four times a year will
do wonders for keeping the body in a normal healthy condition. The diet may be undertaken more frequently
for serious conditions.
How to Make Lemonade
2 Tbsp lemon or lime juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)
2 Tbsp genuine maple syrup (not maple flavored sugar syrup)
1/10 Tsp cayenne pepper (red pepper) or to taste
Water, medium hot (spring or purified water)
Combine the juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper in a 10 oz. glass and fill with medium hot water.
(Cold water may be used if preferred.) Use fresh lemons or limes only, never canned lemon or lime juice
nor frozen lemonade or frozen juice. Use organic lemons when possible.
ReplyI am starting tomorrow! for health reasons, not diet! wish me luck.
Here's a great link to the above information:
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Beautycare-Venus/2032/english/master_cleanser.html
there is alot of information out there (mostly POSITIVE) about this cleanse. I'm looking forward to it, I want to rid my body of all these toxins. I'm tired of being tired all the time ;)
Replyi am going to try this detox tomorow for 7 days, followed by another 7 of a fruits and vegetables fast. im hoping it will make me shed at least 15 lbs! i'll let you know how it goes.
ReplyIt amazes me how uninformed people are about their health.
The lemon cleanse is not meant to be taken as a diet. It is meant to clean the body out so your body can function like it was supposed to without all the toxins and crap that cause you to get sick and gain weight.
Someone said, 'If it makes you feel bad, why do you do it?'
You do it because it is the toxins that are being shaken up and eliminated that make you sick. Being sick is a good thing because it tells you that the cleanse is working and your body was getting so used to being polluted, that now there is rebellion. It is a necessary step to becoming healthy again.
I am on day 4 of the cleanse and though the occasional hunger pang comes up, that is part of discipline. It is no different than going on a fast. I haven't weighed myself and I really don't care what I lose. I'm doing this to clean out my body, not to lose weight. I have lost over 32 pounds by exercising and eating right. This is merely a springboard.
How about we get rid of the cynicism and quit thinking that everything you are told by the FDA and other organizations that 'pooh-pooh' natural treatments are from God Himself.
It is unfortunate that something that works is associated with a star, considered a 'fad', and therefore is a fraud.
What hoke. Be informed and learn the facts, Listen to testimonies instead of the scare tactics of those that want you to be eating cheeseburgers and taking drugs instead of learning to become healthy and happy.
Replyjust purchased all the ingredients for the master cleanse diet. i am very excited and hope it will do me some good. whether i lose or not is irrelevant to me my main concern is to cleanse the digestive area and kidneys from all toxins.
ReplyHey guys!! I really want to start this diet tomorrow and want to make sure i'm doing it right. how many times a day am i supposed to drink it?? how much could i potentially lose if i am on it for 5 days??
ReplyHello all! I have read all the comments here and I am most interested in hearing from the people who worked out while on this cleanse. I would like to do the cleanse for the detox benefits, since my main concern is increased health and vitality, not weight loss. I am female, almost 6' (5'11 3/4") and I weigh 145 lbs. I consider myself an athlete and quite fit. I have run 16 marathons for charity and I work out 5-6 days a week. I don't want to sound like a fitness fanatic, I just love doing it. I feel that all day long I am doing things for other people (in the office at my job) so working out is one of the things I do only for me. I am able to propel myself through the air, enjoy the outdoors, breathe deeply and quiet my mind for one lovely hour! My workouts usually consisting of 3 days of running and 2-3 days in the gym doing 35-40 minutes of cross-training cardio (elliptical trainer, bike, or rowing) and weights. My usual run is about an hour (a 6 mile loop in the park; I can't run on a treadmill it makes me nutty), but I also run long at least once a week; anywhere from 8-16 miles depending on what race I am training for. As an example, here is my workout log from last week:
Monday: Ran 6.7 miles
Tuesday: Gym: Weights & Elliptical Trainer (40 minutes)
Wednesday: Ran 10 miles
Thursday: Gym: Weights & Bike (40 minutes)
Friday: Ran 6 miles
Saturday: Day off
Sunday: Ran 6.7 miles
I am being detailed in this account because I want to know this: Do you **really** have enough energy to work out like this when you are on this detox? I probably wouldn't attempt anything longer than a 4 mile run, but I am concerned that even a gym workout might leave me feeling faint and weak. I look forward to your replies, cheers! Cat
ReplyI am interested intrying the diet I know it works I know many people who have tried it I just need to know how do you make it ?
ReplyHi ty,
I am unsure of the actual ratio of ingredients, but here some (if not all) of the ingredients used:
.Madal balm tre syrup
.Cayenne pepper
.Sea salt
.Lemon juice
.Water
I hope this helps
Replyi actually tried the lemonade diet and it did help. i was able to spell things a lot better, tell the difference between being hungry or just wanting to eat food. it was really tuff to not eat food specially with room mates eating pizza all the time. but go to http://humblebeehealth.com/ and you can learn some things about the diet, fasting and other crazy things about what is in the foods we eat on a regular basses. here are some links to go to that will make you not want to eat some of the foods you eat every day.
ReplyI am starting the diet on tomorrow. Pray for me because though I am excited about it, I am a little afraid of passing out or the taste of the drink. I will check back in with my results!
ReplyI tried the Master Cleanse back in December of 2006. Prior to starting the Master Cleanse,I was constantly having difficulty sleeping, headaches and felt stressed.I also have had an underactive thyroid for over 20 years, but after starting the cleanse I slept like a baby, the headaches stopped and I was full of energy. It helped with those issues I was having and I lost 17lbs in 17 days, but that was only a bonus. Also, you do not have to do the Salt Water Flushes in the morning. You can use the Smooth Moves Teas at night and in the morning. I felt FANTASTIC....And I did not gain all of that weight back.
ReplyFinally someone who has the same condition as me! yipee..i'm more inspired now! I am on day one of the cleanse...wish me luck! Xxx
