The Maple Syrup Diet Fad
Celebrity + weight loss + unusual product = instant fad.
Beyoncé Knowles claims she lost 20 pounds by consuming a concoction made up of maple syrup, lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. Of course it's not just any maple syrup but an organic "Madal Bal Natural Tree" syrup (UK distributor / USA distributor). Consequently sales of the product are soaring (src).
The maple syrup is part of a "detox" or fast.
According to Beyonce:
"I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying."
These kind of diets are foolhardy indeed, and it is not the first time that maple syrup has been mentioned by someone of celebrity status.
Without laboring the point - living on a maple syrup concoction for days on end will probably leave you: weak, with less muscle, a lot less glycogen (in the form of fluid loss), and probably very grumpy. Give this a wide berth.
What did Beyonce do after enduring her maple syrup ordeal?
"After that I ate waffles, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, everything I could find.
"That was the best time of my life. I've gained twelve pounds."
NOTE: You can get the full details of the Master Cleanse here.
I am on day 5 of the master cleanse and I've lost seven pounds. The first two days my head was foggy...but I have more energy than I have had in years now. I run, I swim, I do yoga ...all while on the cleanse. Thanks for the "workout" suggestion Barbie. I work out a lot...and seeing a nutritionist for 12 weeks -- to lose 3 whole pounds. My nutritionist approved me going on the master cleanse for 14-21 days to get off the final 15 lbs I need to lose. I'm sure it's not for everyone...but it's working for me.
Buy the Book "Master Cleanser" from Stanley Burroughs or google the same to find the recipe and the rules of the road.
ReplyWhat exactly is 1/10 of a teaspoon. About how much?
ReplyI'm trying to lose about 30 more pounds and have come to a stand still losing the weight and since it's the holidays I will incorporate this into my weekly diet. My plan is to fast one full day a week, sunday, and instead of dinner, except for those holiday parties.
I have done this fast before for 5 days, but not sure my body (and activities) could handle longer time periods.
I like the idea of switching out one meal aday, and I like the idea of giving my digestive track a rest. It gets a pretty good workout and could use the break. I'll post an update later.
ReplyI have read all of the post here and for the most part the more intellectual ones provide good info, more so than Beyonce'the numbskull. I will try after the holidays and see what happens. I would like to lose 40lbs, but I am to scared to do this mainly, the previous post are right about this being a cleanse, I will use it to help me have a more healthier diet.
ReplyDani couldn't of said it any better. Balance is the key. I was on a fast a couple of weeks ago where I just had water and broth. I did this fast for a week and lost 4lbs. I was taking my vitamins and exercising. When I came off of it I watched what I ate and continue to work out for 2 hours and lost another 3lbs. I'm trying the Maple Diet in about a week and I will do the same thing only without the broth. Good Luck!!!
Replyi am starting the master cleanse after the holidays (so that im not depressed watching my family eat a lot of food)to those of you who have done the cleanse...i have heard that it gives you more energy after a few days and that your body overall feels better. and for the weight loss... how many of you have been able to keep the weight off?...i wouldnt know...but it seems to me that if you were to do a liquid diet for however long, that you would just gain all the weight back after the cleanse.
Replyany thoughts?
Maybe you guys who are questioning Beyonce being happy with herself should read or watch interviews. She's ALWAYS been curvy, and likes it. However, she had to drop 20lbs for Dreamgirls. It was for a role. Get over it, she's gaining it back now.
ReplyAre you able to take something for the caffeine headaches during this cleanse? Motrin, Tylenol?
ReplyI dont care what anybody says Beyonce' looks fabulous and you guys need chill ive done my research its a healthy diet ok and Beyonce' wouldnt endanger her health and u know what she doesnt just drink the drink she also eats vetegatables and fruit so you know what get your facts straight ok :)
Replyfrom,
her biggest fan
this isn't meant just for weight loss - it's supposed to cleanse the body and the whole digestive system. She lost weight a stupid way - but there's nothing wrong with this maple syrup cleanse is you use appropriately
ReplyI KNOW A COUPLE OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE TRIED THIS DETOX.
ReplyVERY ONE OF THEM ARE REALLY SHOWING A LOT OF PROGRESS.
MY ADVICE TO ANYONE THAT WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT SHOULD
MATTERO OF FACT I AM GOING TO TRY IT MYSELF AS OF 01 01 2007.
I understadn this is actually a colon cleansing fast. So she may have misunderstood it as a diet, however... her colon couldnt be cleaner!
ReplyThe Master Cleanse (Lemonade made with organic lemons, organic maple syrup, and cayenne pepper, combined with either a salt water flush or lax tea) does NOT leave you weak and grumpy. Something that cleanses the body, as it does, actually makes you feel excellent. The syrup alone provides one with enough sugars and calories (glycogen, if you will) to stay energized and active. People who have not fasted on lemonades or natural fruit/vegetable juices have no room to comment on how they make you feel or even have the nerve to say that it is unhealthy. In fact, they are the best way to MAKE your body healthy and cleanse the system.
Not only does it rid the colon of excess buildup from the typical american diet, it rids of excess oils (causing acne, dandruff, etc), muscle pain, fatigue, migraine, so on and so forth.
ReplyHere is a message for Connie(sep 15 2006)at 0136hrs comment..You asked if I was Zimbabwean...well , i was born in Zim and grew up there...ancestors are from Tanzania though...I started the maple syrup diet 2 days ago..passed out yesterday?????secondary to feeling dizzy I guess...will keep on though coz my friend's wedding is in April and I haven't got much time to lose the weight...this calls for some drastic action...
Replyim 13 years old and me & my mom will be doing the master cleanse. starting monday jan 1st, it is NOT a diet plan but a detox (i am using it as a diet) since i model and have an audition coming up.
for all you imbeciles that didn't do your researc hread about the master CLEANSE or maple syrup DEOTX ( NOT diet) before you start making wrongful asumptions about it.

happy new years
Jared Leto gained 62 pounds for his upcoming movie Chapter 27, and did this diet to lose the weight. I read he was diagnosed with GOUT because of his dramatic weight loss. I don't see what the big deal about losing weight is. When I want to lose weight, I work out more and eat healthier. Ta daaaaa. Just keeping it simple is the easiest thing for me.
Replyhi
im just starting the cleanse today, and its great tasting, not as bad as i thought it would be. I have so much weight to lose, about 6stone, and i have to do something..so here goes
IF ANYONE WANTS to start with me, and need a buddy, please email me voices.voices@ntlworld.com
thanks
ReplyI started this cleanse 3 times and never lasted more than 3 days. The third time i started it, on the third day I woke up and couldn't breathe or walk and my head was spinning and was rushed into hospital. I don't think this applies for everyone but please make sure it is approaite for you before you think of starting it.
ReplyI'd like to give this a try, although i'm still skeptical and addled with health concerns but i'm game to try anything once. however, since you would be getting lots of bowel movements (as well as having to pee like crazy), i wouldn't want to do this during the work week. With that said, i'd like to know if i plan on doing this only over the weekend... 2 days a week... would that be enough to give me at least a little bit of the detox benefits?
ReplyMy best advice is to read the book. This is the most accurate way to learn how to do this diet. The book says to do this diet for a minimum of 10 days. The most important part is that you are to come of this diet very slowly. You actually break yourself in slowly to ending the diet and returning to solid food.
Replywell what is an effective diet to do to lose 15 kg's in less than a month or so???... HELP
ReplyTo lose 15 kg in a month, I think the most effective way is to amputate a limb.
Seriously. Unless you are like 120 kg overweight, you are not going to lose 15 kg in a month in any way that is healthy.
ReplyWhat the article failed to say was...Beyonce had to loose 20 pounds for her role as Deena in Dream Girls. So, she did not do it just to do it..She did it for the movie!! Come on people, get it together..Donot cast stones if you are not sure what you are talking about.
ReplyI know the diet sounds extreme, but it actuall y has ingredients to give you the energy you need to last through out the day. And by the way I did not gain the weight back because you're not supposed to binge, you're supposed to go straight to eating healthy and exercising regularly, this cleanse is just a boost to get you to drop the first extra pounds and motivate you to stay skinny and/or fit.
ReplyWell call me crazy or call me desperate because I plan to start this cleanse by the weekend. I've attempted this same cleanse about 3 months ago, but I was not mentally prepared for the challenge. Also, I am surrounded by co-workers whom love to dine out and I could not overcome the temptation. I believe my biggest mistake was to let my co-workers know that I could not dine with them because I was cleansing. This is not something you can just tell anyone. I heard remarks like, "You're going to die without food for 10 days." I must say that hearing those types of remarks even though I knew it was not true beacuse I did my research and read the book still had an affect on my confidence in the cleanse and myself. I wanted to cleanse not to lose weight but to rid my body of toxins. Now I plan to complete the cleanse and I will give updates on it throughout the process.
ReplyWish me luck!
Wow! So many weird "diets" that prey on people desperate for real change! It's sad and cruel. Anyone thinking clearly realizes that eating only one type of food is seriously unhealthy and could not be maintained over any long period of time. People need a variety of food to meet their body's nutritional needs. Folks may lose some weight on these silly diets, but as soon as they return to their normal eating habits, the weight will return. The only thing that really works long term is eating less food energy(calories) than your body neeeds. This is done by eating carefully and burning more energy through exercise. Anyone that wants help with this or has questions about it can visit my website at milliondollarbody.com/CoachLisa. My email is avialable on this site and I would be honored to help anyone truly seeking change. Best wishes for a new you!
Replymaybe this doesn't seem like a great diet for weight loss because IT'S NOT! It's a fast, for releasing toxins from the body, and for that, it's amazing. do your research before jumping all over the same bandwagon as everyone else.
ReplyHELP!!
ive just turned 20, i am 13stone which at 5ft2 is very much obese. i dont want to be skinny, in all i need to lose 3/4 stone to be a healthy weight for my height but i am happy in just losing 2 stone.
i am really considering doing this syrup diet/detox even if i understand it is maybe temporary. i just want something to kick start the loss. im on slim fast at the mo for breakfast and lunch then hve a weight watchers meal for dinner.
if anyone has any better ideas for me plz let me know!ive tried many diets n they dont work ive done healthy eating n the exercise but it doesnt always work or when it does it doesnt take me long to gain it all again!
Reply13stone,
ReplyI'm on day 4. Go out and BUY this book! It will change your life! This is my 2nd time on the Master Cleanser. Last time I only did it for 3 days, but this time I will be doing it for the full 10 days. If you read articles on the Master Cleanser, you will see how many people have seen amazing results in simply healing their bodies. I will warn that if you eat unhealthly, and a diet full of meat (I do!) two days before should strictly be water, fruits, and vegetables. The first few days are the worst, but I haven't been grumpy. It is not a diet, it is a way to start fresh. This means gradually adding exercise and when you come off the cleanse; eating healthy. You won't be hungry, but you will see how food plays a role in our lives and how "missing a meal won't hurt!"
BTW, the book says you can safely do this cleanse for up to 40 days and repeat when necessary throughout the year. My friend has done it for 21 days, but he is a vegetarian so it may have come easier. I've also read about a man who was overweight and did it for 120 days and saw dramatic results in his weight and overall health. Stanley Burroughs however, does not recommend more than 40 days in his book.
ReplyIt's funny all the people saying bad things about it, have never even tried it. My son's father and his friends use this detox once a year sometimes twice, they do it together, I guess for moral support? I remember the first time they did it- He lost a ton of weight and he has kept it off 10 years now. They don't do it for weight loss, though. It was a side effect he kept by changing his diet. They do it to cleanse the system. Read the book and try it before you talk bad about it.
Replyactually it's no 'myth' that you have undigested food hanging around in your intestines...yes, you are restricting calories and bound to lose a pound or two because of it, but based upon my experience I lose a lot of 'crap,' literally! I had so much stuff stored in my body, and you start to wonder where it comes from. But I soon realized after the 'pooch' in my stomach disappeared. My entire intestinal track was pretty much backed up and purging out. I have a visible six-pack and very fit body with healthy curves which means I should also have a flat stomach, in most cases. After I completed a detox/bowel cleansing program my stomach became much flatter and I felt no more bloat. I didn't lose much body fat, I'm already healthy to begin with...BMI at 21.1...and what little I lost has already been gained back which is what I wanted anyhow. Not everyone's experience will be the same. So don't judge something because you don't think it will work for you, especially if you have never tried it!
ReplyTrish, of course people have undigested food sitting around in their intestines. For people with a diet poor in fiber, they may take as long as 2 weeks to dispose of certain types of waste, like meat. So I don't doubt you lost a week's worth or even two weeks' worth of crap. But what people are saying is a myth is that people carry years and years worth of waste in their intestines. It would cause a bloackage, if they did. Vegetarians love to perpetuate this myth, even going as far as saying John Wayne, for example, had 15lb of waste in his instestines. If you go to snopes.com you can read more about this urban legend. The moral there is: don't eat meat, or you'll have it in your body for years.
ReplyI really want to lose the weigth and i thought this diet would help but reading all of the mixed reviews about it i just want to know once and for all if this is a good diet or should i just stick to my exercising and veggies
ReplyFind a healthy diet-exercise program that you can sustain over the long hall and you will be fit! If you do this, your life will be much easier. The short term fads and fasts are just that, short term. I feel the fads are foolish. Some fasting may have merits when applied reasonably and appropriately.
ReplyJust drinking water isn't actually healthier for you, because it is the cayenne pepper that boost your metabolism naturally so that it doesn't slow down during the cleanse. The Maple Syrup is the aspect that keeps the sugar in your bloodstream regulated so you don't get lightheaded and doesn't put your body in starvation mode. If done properly, you maintain a sugar balance, as well as keep hydrated and maintain a healthy metabolism. It's not safe to use for a long period of time, but for the recommended time period, it is actually fine. Again though, it depends on the person and previous health problems or concerns he/she have.
ReplyThere is a difference between fasting and dieting. The master cleanse, which Beyonce was using, is a fast meant to cleanse your body of toxins. Unfortunately, many people in Hollywood have been using it to quickly loss weight. I say unfortunately because that gives people the impressions that is what the fast is intended for.
Reply2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
a teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)
10 ounces water.
You really should not attempt the detox, however, without first reading the book. There are other things involved as well, like taking a herb laxative tea at night, and drinking two quarters of salt water in the morning. Also, you can drink as much water as you want, and can occasionally drink mint tea.
Also, there are rules for what to eat when you come off the detox. Hint, fried chicken, and waffles are not on the list.
I have been on it for two days. I gained five pounds.
Replyi started the diet yesterday lost 3pounds this morning have been taking the laxative but i have not been able to do anything yet i wonder how long before it starts working i mean to go to the toilet, am hoping to lost a stone and halp i hope it works good luck to me
ReplyWow she looks so gorgeous and slender.but i always loved her curver because i dont see anything wrong with having curves.
