The Maple Syrup Diet Fad
Celebrity + weight loss + unusual product = instant fad.
Beyoncé Knowles claims she lost 20 pounds by consuming a concoction made up of maple syrup, lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. Of course it's not just any maple syrup but an organic "Madal Bal Natural Tree" syrup (UK distributor / USA distributor). Consequently sales of the product are soaring (src).
The maple syrup is part of a "detox" or fast.
According to Beyonce:
"I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying."
These kind of diets are foolhardy indeed, and it is not the first time that maple syrup has been mentioned by someone of celebrity status.
Without laboring the point - living on a maple syrup concoction for days on end will probably leave you: weak, with less muscle, a lot less glycogen (in the form of fluid loss), and probably very grumpy. Give this a wide berth.
What did Beyonce do after enduring her maple syrup ordeal?
"After that I ate waffles, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, everything I could find.
"That was the best time of my life. I've gained twelve pounds."
NOTE: You can get the full details of the Master Cleanse here.
lol She looks like a stick in that photo.
It's very unhealthy to shock your body like that. I still vote for a Weight Watchers type of diet for a safe weight loss.
ReplyThis cleanse was invented back in the 1940's.
I'm doing this cleanse right now and am on day five. You are not starving your body on this cleanse, you're taking in 1600 calories a day from the maple syrup.
My skin is clearer and as long as I have this lemonade with me and drink it when I start to feel like I need to have some I have plenty of energy to get through the day. I have not had any headaches. You also drink a quart of warm water with two teaspoons of sea salt in the morning which tastes like chicken soup without the chicken. This helps to clean out the digestive tract.
Two years ago I did a liver flush after which my lactose intolerance was gone. I think it got rid of the bad bacteria in my intestinal track and after the flush I ate yogurt to replenish the good bugs :)
The drink consists of 1 cup maple syrup, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1/2 t cayanne pepper and 60 oz water.
1600 calories.
You can drink as much additional water as you like but can't eat or drink anything else.
If you have been eating a proper diet you will probably not lose as much weight as claimed in the fifteen day period. The weight you loose is all the junk in your intestines and extra water weight. No dehydration as you are consuming at least 3 qt. water a day.
ReplyAdditionally,
When you get off the cleanse you are supposed to do it over the course of a few days. You can read about it on wiki.
After you are on the cleanse you may notice yourself wanting food when you're not hungry, like when passing a fast food place or see a commercial. If you weren't doing it you may have just consumed calories for nothing.
One of the benefits of this cleanse is it gives your brain time to reset so it can be easier to change your eating habits when you get off it.
ReplyI am currently on the master cleanse diet - but there are different variations and you can eat. I am replacing breakfast and lunch and eating a regular dinner. In one week I have lost 4 pounds. I only want to lose another 8 pounds, so it works for me. I felt I needed the protein and didn't want to completely starve myself the 10 days although I can see the benefit of that also. That option, just wouldn't work for me. This way, I won't have to ease off. I can just maintain at the desired weight.
ReplyI notice Very Very little difference in the way Beyonce looks now compared to before. Besides, a diet that makes you sterve never works cause you can only keep it up for so long. I alway recommend a diet that promotes Sustainable weight loss, Go-advise.com has plenty of ideas on diets.
ReplyThis is actually good for fasting to get rid of toxins in your body .I've read a lot about fasting to cleanse your body.So I am willing to try it.
ReplyThis is typical of most diet fads. Of course you ll lose weight if you starve yourself - What happens after that? hm-mm...your metabolism has decreased which makes it easier to gain weight later on in life plus you have not addressed the core issues, thus you'll never learn how to deal with your problem.
ReplyStarvation causes more weight gain in the long term (due to decreased metabolism, thus the body stores all the fat it gets later on)- weight issues need a lifestyle change not a change from big macs to maple syrup for a few days.
She couldn't wait to get of of it :-) If I had to live off of that for 14 days I'd be eating a lot of waffles, fries and fried chicken too.
mmm waffles :_)
Stars are often told they're fat when they're not.
If you deprive yourself of calories you will loose weight but it's not healthy and you end up with depervation binges.
ReplyMaple syrup diet, cabbage soup diet, they're all the same kind of fad diet that will work in the short term because of a huge drop in calorie intake, but like everyone else has said, it won't last because of slowed metabolism and binge eating due to feeling starved.
Why does Beyonce need to lose weight anyway? Who wants to look like a stick figure (unless it's your natural bodytype) when you could have curves like that!
Replybeyonce lost weight for her role in dream girls
ReplySpecifically Beyonce used the cleanse to lose lbs as there were only 2 weeks between shooting Deena Jones as a teen and Deena Jones as an adult. The scenes where Deena is an adult were shot first, therefore Beyonce used the cleanse in order to shoot Deena's younger, skinnier scenes just 2 weeks later.
ReplyI've heard of that diet...sounds NASTY! I bet she was cranky the whole time and if she just gained 12 lbs back after doing it, what was the point??? She wasn't really ever fat, just curvy. It's so dumb when celebrities do this kind of crap to lose weight because then EVERYONE else wants to do it too, even if they KNOW it's not that effective and it was a tortuous diet to go on. I'd rather enjoy the journey to a skinny me (and I did enjoy it, let me tell you) by eating moderately and working out and get there slowly instead of doing a stupid fad to lose a bunch of weight quickly and then gaining most of it back.
ReplyHi Spectra,
Like Asia said before, Beyonce lost weight for her role in Dreamgirls. If she was determent to keep her weight down like some other celeberties that are obsessed with they're weight, she wouldnt have gained 12pounds by eating fried chicken.
ReplyI remember reading about this diet as a form of detox rather than weight loss. There's a book about it, "The Master Cleanser" by Stanley Borroughs (sp?).
ReplyMy dentist actually had his whole staff on this plan and after they cleansed, they actually gained more weight because their bodies were starved for nutrition...when will people learn?
Replywe will learn after we try it ourselves! People can only learn lessons by making mistakes and you never know whats best for any given person. Maybe it hasnt worked for you but that doesnt mean you should be so cold to those interested in the idea.
ReplyOh no, the detox is back. All of your points are spot on! What some people don't seem to know is that some studies suggest that so-called "detox" process can actually release some poisons into a blood stream. Anyway, it is a long story that I plan to talk about soon.
Replywonder where would that "poison" come from. Are you going to talk about it as well? Is it not better to rid off it rather then tell everyone to be afraid of it?
Replyyeah, i don't understand why people don't do a little research and get on a healthy cleanse, if that's what they want.
if you're just looking to lose weight and NOT particularly to cleanse your intestines, you can just count calories and work out. you can easily burn 1000 calories a day by finding out how many you burn per day, and eating 1000 less calories than that... these calories should come from nutritional foods like lean meat (lean turkey, boneless skinless chicken breast), fruits and veggies and whole grains. burning 1000 calories a day is a loss of about 3 pounds per week. you might even lose more than that, who knows. when i did this i lost way more than i should have, i THINK because i am conservative about how many calories i'm actually burning. keep in mind, burning 1000 calories a day is even extreme, but if you do it carefully (read labels) it can still be good for you.
this cleanse diet, with the maple syrup- think about the nutrients you're depriving yourself of. your body eats muscle when it doesn't have enough protein-- guess what your heart is made out of? and that's just protein- think about the vitamins and minerals you're missing out on. i'm sure you won't die after 14 days of malnutrition- but it is NOT good for you.
if you REALLY want to cleanse in a healthy way- become a "rabbit", so to speak lol. eat vegetables, fruits, whole and very complex grains, and BEANS for protein. lots of water and whatever tea you need for the cleanse- you'll do great and not want to pass out.
seriously, guys, please don't start a diet where you are starving yourself. it doesn't work in the long run, but more importantly, it is really really bad for you. if beyonce had to lose a ton of weight in 2 weeks for a role, i understand that- that's her job. but for normal people, don't be crazy, especially when there are healthy ways of getting similar results (usually the results are actually better because you can keep the weight off for longer).
xo,
Replyconcerned
I kind of like her a bit thinner because (at least in that picture) she still looks curvy but it shows how naturally small her bone structure is... but the way she got that way is a bit on the stupid side. MAJOR stress on the body!
ReplyI like her better a bit curvier but supposedly it was for a movie role. Shoot, I would drink that crap and be cranky for the paycheck she got. I've endured some bad stuff for a whole lot less.
ReplyThe whole point of "The Master Cleanse", popularized by Stanley Burroughs, is too rid your body of toxins and give your digestive system a rest. It was never meant to be used as a diet for weight loss, although of course weight loss is a nice side effect. It should be used as a transition into a healthier lifestyle.
ReplyI live in south africa, i am intrested on this diet as my friend just had a baby n she wants to loose some wait very quickly.
What i want to know is the procedure, i mix what with what.
Please help
ReplyWell I have to say she does look fit and skinny but this is just another way to trick your body into losing weight. This method might work for several people but for the majority it is just another fad diet that I believe is wrong. I don't know if I should keep saying this but diets are short-term and healthy eating and exercise is long-term in changing your body's physique.
ReplyIt's definetly not worth putting the body through so much torture, especially when the results are not going to last. It's best to just stick the typical way of losing unwanted weight. Work Out!
ReplyOh my gosh can she do the diet to play the role god yall act like she just wanted to lose weight and keep it off of her because if she did she would not have eaten all that food afterwards duh and the diet is not really to loose weight but it does happen get it through your damn mind it was for Dreamgirls duhhhhhhhhh!
ReplyBeyonce has to look that way in her head. It's the only thing she can think for all those videos she does.
Regarding her looking skinny: Most of it is Metabolism (some are better than others) and the other thing is how much does she work out at the gym?
She's probably one of these types of people that goes 6x a week (too much really) Average you should do: 2 days Cardio, 3 days circuit and free weights. Especially if you are trying to lose weight.
Don't forget to eat though. A person should on average have 3 meals a day PLUS every 2-3 hours should be on snacking something healthy. It works for me, I've lost 20lbs in 2 weeks go figure and I'm not starving myself.
Off Topic Question:
ReplyMy question is with those hair commercials are those models actually using that actual shampoo that they are advertising or not. I'll never know.
the answer is no. they get a protein conditioning treatment done on their hair, and then they spray it with olive oil to get that incredible shine. plus LOTS of lighting gets every shiny detail on camera. never believe what you see on TV.
as far as the weight loss for Beyonce... she definitely likes being an "in-shape" curvy girl, if she was doing the detox to lose weight for her roll, she clearly states she gained the weight back. I believe the detox will work if you use it for the right reasons... after it's complete your stomach is smaller and it is harder to eat heavy foods, so when coming back to eating food, eat light food, lots of fruits and vegetables, and keep up the healthy eating habits!
ReplyOddly, she never mentions that laxatives or the sea salt that are also part of the detox. I was about 2 hours away from starting the program with a friend when I actually read the schedule. Sorry, anything involving laxatives on a regular basis is bulimia IMO. Not to mention that the super duper pure maple syrup will cost you about $12 A DAY! Instead I'm going to start Nutrisystem next month. Wish me luck!
ReplyI did this regimen back in the early 80s but it wasn't considered a diet but a cleanse or a detox. I did it for 7 days and to tell you the truth, I never felt hungry or weak on it. I got an amazing high from it. I doubt I could do it now though. I just don't have the patience.
ReplyP.S. I should add this significant fact. I did not lose much weight on this cleanse. At the time I was about 125 lbs and wasn't focused on weight loss whatsoever. I had a healthy metabolism and an even healthier appetite especially for crap. I used this program to clean out my system...but the weight loss? Maybe a pound or two and that was probably water anyway.
ReplyIm interested in this Maple syrus, lemon warter cheyenne
pepper diet. What exactly is the formulation of the ingredients?
Thank you,
ReplySusan
I don’t know what the formulation is, but the quote says: "I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying". In other words, Beyonce was starving. She lost weight because of severe caloric restriction. If you drastically cut your calories, you too will lose weight, at least temporarily. In her case, the formulation was irrelevant.
Having said that, what she did was potentially very dangerous, and I don’t recommend it. I have worked with these people for many years. Sometimes, they do crazy things, but they can afford it, because they are under supervision of the best specialists.
Yet, they get in trouble from time to time. I cannot and don’t have to name any names, but you have probably heard of very expensive eating disorder treatments that some celebs go through. It is just not worth it. Diet-blog is a great site, look around a little more, and you’ll find the information you need to lose weight safely. You may also want to ask a specific question, so that the community wisdom can help you with your specific needs.
Replyhealthynerd...are you fu@king kiding me?Beyonce looks like a stick in that picture?what...EVER!She looks like the same healthy curvy lady she has always looked like!Stick. If you want to see a stick...go look at a tree.
ReplyI'm have beed trying this fad diet for the past month. Ive lost only a couple of pounds but a lot of inches.(about 7). I drink this juice a couple of times a day and I do eat, (lightly). It suppresses my appetite and I have not had any adverse side effects. It works for me
ReplyI am currently on Day 5 of the Master Cleanse program, not for weight loss, but to help detox my body before pregnancy. I know it sounds crazy, but it really is about eliminating the disease-producing and aging-inducing toxins that accumulate for the average American diet. I would have never thought I could go a few hours without eating, much less days, but so far it's going great. I feel great and do not feel hungry. It's just a bonus that I've already lost 10 pounds.
ReplyHey
I remember reading about this a while ago and thinking exactly the same thing as you Jim.
Surely all this would do is rid your body of any remaining water and muscle, slow your metabolism down to zilch and ensure that any food you ate after you had finished went straight back on as fat as quickly as possible.
Probably the most unhealthy, flawed weightloss plan I have ever heard.
Ross
ReplyMost adults benefit from a fast once or twice a year. However, because of the high xenobiotic load most of us carry due to chemical pollution in the environment, many toxins are released into the bloodstream during a fast. These are more toxic to the brain than in the past, and naturopaths now may recommend more frequent, shorter fasts, such as three days per month.
ReplyHow do you mix up the maple syrup diet??
ReplyI plan on doing the cleanse for a minimum of 3 days - as much as I would love to lose a stone or 2, I am not Beyonce and I don't have a movie to make (she went skinny for Dreamgirls, reasoning that ladies were smaller in the 60's, when the movie is set). She didn't do it for a laugh - it was purely for a job. It'll kick-start a healthy eating regime; the results will be incidental but welcome.
ReplyThere are plenty of cases (and places you can go, there's one in Thailand) where people have done extreme detoxes to give the body and mind a clearout. If anyone thinks I'll be living off maple syrup for the rest of my life, they have another thing coming.
As for Beyonce? If she ate the things she loved in the quantities she really wanted, her butt would be the size of her home state.
This is not a diet and it is not intended to lose weight. Read "The Master Cleanse" by Stanley Burroughs (you can find PDF copies of this book if you search) It is a cleanse and works great. I did this cleanse a year ago and I never felt tired nor weak. I exercised daily for 30-40 minutes without tiring. I was training for a marathon and during the 10 days I was unable to run more than 5 miles. The cleanse decreased my endurance a little due to the lack of calories.
Currently I am in the 3rd day of another cleanse and I feel great. Yes the salt water flush in the AM is not very pleasant, but it is amazing what still comes out of your bowels after a week on the cleanse. You would think you're empty, but guess again. I would recommend that if you decide to do this cleanse, be sure you are relatively healthy and follow the instructions in the book.
Lastly, as for weight loss, I did lose about 16 lbs the first time and was able to keep it off as I was training for the NY marathon. I also learned that I didn't need to eat that much to keep going. As a result my portion size reduced. That in itself helped me keep the weight off too. Good luck to those who want to rid their bodies of the toxins from our modern diet.
ReplyI agree! This is my fourth time doing the cleanse. I'm on day 5 and have been bike riding about an hour a day and feel fine! Sleeping well at night. Only thing is I want to drink the maple syrup straight from the bottle...
is that bad???
Last few times I lost about 10 lbs in 10 days and gained back 5 almost immediately after eating. Then managed to keep the 5 off. Also, be very careful not to eat solid food right away because your liver will not be able to handle it. I was severely ill and it was like i had food poisoning for about 3 hours
i think this is
ReplyI have done this cleanse and you don't feel hungry and you feel awewsome afterward. The weight loss is a bonus. It is amazing after not "eating" for 14 days, when you look around you afterward, you see that the public eats way too much. After I did this cleanse the first time I lost my appetite for red meat. Your taste buds and cravings are so much different after not eating for that period of time. I do this cleanse 4 times a year...usually lose a few pounds but feel very healthy. I don't feel the need to eat fried chicken or bad things when I'm done; on the contrary...I want to eat healthy...what was the point of cleansing in the first place if you eat bad afterward. The most amazing thing to me during this cleanse...never once did my tummy growl or did I feel really hungry!
ReplyHollaaa Friends!! The idea behind this "Maple Syrup Diet" is simple and effective however I wouldn't recommend you soley live off of H20, Maple Syrup, Lemon Juice, and Cayenne Pepper.... it's not only dangerous but risky too. #1 Your basically starving yourself. #2 Sure the pound will drop, but in turn your metabolism will drop as well because of the decreased amount of calories consumed, so you'll end up gaining the majority of it all back. And #3 Because the diets roots were based on detoxification, all the both good and bad chemicals/minerals in your body will be flushed, leaving you nutrient deprived (being the riskiest of all). All in all it may seem like a good idea, but in turn it's nothing but another "easy" excuse to shed pounds. The trick is to balance it! Because of all the chemicals and such we have in our foods today, a body dextox will not only give you more energy, but will also cleanse your system of all the harmful additives. I would HIGHLY recommed if you consider going on this regime to take a multivitamin supplement to keep your body functioning and to avoid body fatigue. Keep it short and simple, I'd say start with 2 or 3 days... and go from there. Remember do not stress the body too much, also after the detox watch your caloric intake. Avoid fatty and foods high in carbohydrates, eat generous amounts of proteins to speed up your metabolism, and overall take care of yourself. Hope this has helped, good luck :)
ReplyOk it's not that your losing "weight". What your losing is about ten pounds of crap, literally, that has been in your intestine for the past ten or twenty years (it is said that Johnny cash had 40 pounds of fecal matter in his colon during his autopsy). The other five pounds is the water logged pounch you've been carrying on your tummy. Basically on this "diet" you are turning your body into a giant toilet....meaning you are finally "flushing all this waste out of it". But rest assured it will all come back, when your out of control appetite returns!
ReplyChange of lifestyle is the way to go... diets NEVER work because they're temporary. I lost 30 pounds by 1. exercising (pretty much every day for 2 hours, but this is not neccessary... three times a week aerobic for 45 min will do fine), 2. not eating after 7pm, 3. Cutting out coffee, junk food, sweets (but not beer)and - most important of all - late night food) and eating slowly!
ReplyThis diet is meant to be for detoxing for a few days, and depending if you already have a healthy lifestyle. Its a shame because so many people , are influenced by celebrities into doing these fad diets which later can result in eating disorders.
ReplyI'm definately going to try this diet for weight loss in preparation for one of my best friend's wedding...Good on you Beyonce for inspiring others including myself
ReplyI did this diet a few weeks ago but I only lasted for 2 1/2 days. It was terrible, at first I felt really good, but the next day the image of people eating was starting to take its toll, it was really hard and to be honest the drink looks, tastes and smells like vomit. I've read that people have lost 10lbs in 3 days but it seemed like I was piling on the weight. I lost 1 lbs eventually and it didnt seem to come back on when I quit the detox. I'm planning to start it again however but I am going to do the relaxed version where I will still eat fruit to keep my energy levels up. 'Starving' myself is not an option and I've learnt that from this, so I really recommend if you are going to do this detox do the relaxed version and you will last and feel much better for longer.
ReplyThe detox is called the Master Cleanse where you use
2 Tablespoons lemon juice or lime juice
2 Tablespoons real maple syrup
1/10 Teaspoon cayenne pepper
8 oz water
But if you want to use it as a diet I say fill up a 22 oz jug with that concotion and sip on it for breakfast and lunch and for a snack and then for dinner have a healthy meal lean meats with veggies and a sugar/fat free dessert :)
ReplyKenya,
ReplyI'm going to try the detox your way. I don't want to be hungry when I go to bed. Tell me, did you work out at all? And what was your final outcome?
Alternatively, if you want to save yourself the trouble of putting all these ingredients together, you can just drink water. I guarantee you the same results and it is healthier for you.
ReplyThis is funny. Read other forums before you judge the program. Oh btw everyone here might want to do a heavy metal and parasite cleanse. Oh ya but EVERYTHING is celebrity inspired... BOO THAT!!
ReplyWhen did sweet and sour water become a program?
ReplyThe so called maple syrup diet is not a diet, it is a cleanse. It is supposed to be used to cleanse the body of toxins. You do however loose weight. The weight of all the unprocessed beef and toxins that has been sitting in your intestines for years and years. It is not dangerous. You will not end up in the hospital. As far as the maple syrup you only use a tablespoon of maple syrup in the lemonade. You are drinking way more sugar than that in any soda or artifically sweetened drink. What really bothers me is that Stanley Burroughs name is not even mentioned. He invented the cleanse before Beyonce was born. If you want true information, do some research and read the book Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs. It is anything but harmful to your health. I have done it a few times and have never had any problems. I know many people that have done it and they have never had any problems.
Reply"You do however loose weight. The weight of all the unprocessed beef and toxins that has been sitting in your intestines for years and years."
It is a myth. You temporary lose weight because water has no calories.
