Carmen Electra and the NV Weight Loss Pill
It's called NV (as in envy) and is proudly advertised as the "First Rapid Weight-Loss Beauty Pill". NV have signed up actress and model (and, erm.., singer) Carmen Electra as their new spokesperson.
This surely is the mythic essence of marketing - get the 'perfect' body just by taking a pill. And because we all like instant gratification - NV is not just any pill - but a rapid weight loss and beauty pill. Couple it with a silicone-enhanced model and take out a national TV and print advertising campaign.
"NV™'s unique three complex formula is a simple way to enhance a woman's figure, radiate beauty and increase energy," said Electra. "I can identify with a woman's desire to make her outer appearance match her inner glow, which is why my secret to maintaining my looks, energy and confidence is NV™.The 'three complex formula' comprises a weight-loss, beauty, and energy blend.
The weight-loss complex is made up of green tea extract, hoodia gordonii, and theobromine. The exact proportions are unknown because it is a proprietary blend (total 267mg). While green tea extract and hoodia may have some validity regarding fat loss, often this depends on the quality - and as Will Brink puts it (via About Supplements):
The truth is that high-quality green tea extracts containing high levels of active compounds are expensive and rarely used in the cost-conscious supplement industry.Theobromine is a stimulant, and I am unaware of any weight loss effect.
The company behind the pill (nxCare) is like many others in the nutraceutical business - dubious credentials, and a few men getting rich.
Anyone care to try the product?
NV is available on-line at Drugstore.com for $26.99 (free shipping). You can also source discounted product from eBay.

I am sure her real "Pill" is all the dancing and exercise she does.
ReplyI find it funny that in the commericals for NV, she says, "I lose weight with NV, diet and excersise." Um, yeah...? Diet and excersise obviously will lead to weight loss.
Replyum... how does having a woman who doen't require any weightloss make for a plausable spokeswoman?
ReplyI concur with Robyn. How is it convincing when Carmen Electra obviously has no weight to lose? The use of Anna Nicole Smith to advertise Trimspa after clearly losing a lot of weight at least made for a very effective marketing campaign.
ReplyI tried it a few months ago. It was being marketed by big dispays at Walmart. I figured what the heck. It didn't make me jittery. It didn't really do anything--mostly becuase I didn't do anything. Just took the pill and kept doing what I was doing. So, I'm sure there are some health benefits, perhaps, though still dubious. But if I had coupled it with excecise and good eating I'd have lost weight, then again, I would have even with out the pill.
ReplyWell, it's another weight loss solution that claims to give incredible results. I guess I can't as much but I just wonder how many diets will people use in tell they find out healthy eating and exercise is the only solution for losing weight.
ReplyI just saw those at WalMart tonight. First I though "What incredible marketing saavy 'Be Desired' all over the box" then I read some of the materials on the product - it's a BEAUTY PILL!
A BEAUTY PILL - I love it! We have sunk to new lows!
Now if they would just come out with a smarter pill, no one would buy this stuff! As SYD commented above "But if I had coupled it with excecise and good eating I'd have lost weight, then again, I would have even with out the pill."
Peace,
ReplyAdam
It is a scam.
ReplyI suppose that's the problem with diets these days, yes you will look good if you diet but dieting companies are too quick to call overweight people ugly, unattractive etc that fuels a lack of confidence which in turn creates the weight problem in the first place. We shouldn't be so obsessed with looking normal but more focused upon our own happiness.
ReplyWhile common sense says nobody will believe Carmen Electra uses NV the general public will likely snap this stuff up after they find out Carmen endorses it.
There's a huge problem with celebrity worship, and people will buy whatever they tell them to. Proactiv acne solution is proof of this.
Replyummm proactiv acne solution actually works unlike any weight loss pill
Replyobviously you yourself are one of those celeb crazy/ obsessed ppl who use proactiv and every other new scammy product a celeb endorses
Replywell gascoyne are you illiterate?
Replyi said that weight loss supplements dont' work.
and ive tried proactiv and that was because i had severe acne which i got bullied about and that stopped that.
so its not always about celebs is it?
wat about a person's self-esteem?
just remember those ads that show people who lost weight always have in tiny print "results not typical" so does that mean NO results are typical. too bad theres no law to make people endorsing a product to actually use it. richard simmons may be the most annoying man on earth but he supports sensible eating and exercise without miracle drugs. maybe everyone would be better off using their deal a meal and sweating to the oldies!
Replyoh...i have met a few people who used pro active products and the does appear to work. maybe because theres some real medical facts behind it.
Marsi - not sure how possible to quote Carmen Electra in an NV commercial...she was just signed August 3rd. Production (print and TV) has not begun yet. This is a solid product, and despite issues with marketing philosphy - works (or at least helps people lose weight).
No one is forcing anyone to buy the product.
Replyhey i just got NV today i am hopeing it will help me to loose weight my motablism is dead because a few years of not eatting when i was in high school so i have been hopeing that something will help*coupled with healthy diet and excersise* i will post every week to show results i am now 2505lbs 5 foot 11.
ReplyI just got NV today also. I hope it works too, My metabolism is so slow unfortunately. You cant knock it until you try it, so biGirl85 please keep me posted with your results & so will i.
Replyi am now 200 pounds at 5'9
Oh god !!! First off she's NEVER BEEN FAT SOOOO WHY WOULD YOU BUY THIS PILL !!! Ahhh some people have no common sense !!! EAT RIGHT AND BE HEALTHY !
Replyim simply not buying it cause i think she lost weight on it, im stating im trying it. first she was never fat second off shes only been on the campaign for 3 days!
Replyi knew nothing about carmen electra as a spokes person. i found the product at a health food store and the manager recommended it. i want to know if there are any negative side effects. thanks everyone
ReplyI like how the NV website removed the link for the "few men getting rich" link above where the owners of NxCare brag about the penthouse and parties they have...what reputable company would have such an article on there site beats me! The article can still be found here here.
ReplyWHATEVER YOU GUYS MISS OUT BECAUSE IT WORKED WONDERS FOR ME!!!.....I WAS 267 POUNDS AND I AM NOW 138 POUNDS!!!! YOU GUYS ARE NUTS!!!
ReplyHey Iovater - is Iovate a competitor of NxCare? I think it is. What is Iovate's slimming/diet product called again?
I have used NxCare's bodybuilding products and saw (and felt) the benefits, so thier products do work - as would thier retail products.
MuscleTech products have never performed as well.
Replyhopefully everyone planning on using this has checked with their drs. my aunt used a different health store weight loss product and her body had a sudden intense reaction after using it fo 3 months. she almost died. remember any diet should be followed with your doctors approval!
ReplyNV works for me, it helped supressed my appetite taht's all i care about, i stil eat but i kept it to 1600 cal a day. proactive works too i gave it as a gift for my sister and she's totally acne and blemish free. i am skeptic too about the things we see on TV, but sometimes if nothing works what you gonna do?
Replyre the below - I read the article mentioned. Where did it refer to the "nice cars, etc.."???? I did not see that anywhere in the article. If you are going to have a blog, at least pretend to be impartial. The credibility of this site just went down the drain. Jealousy of success is not a trait that should be shared on a blog that is intended to de-bunk myths. Let any truth be found out - not fabricated.
ReplyUPDATE 9/8/06: The link behind "few men getting rich" is no longer working. It used to point to an article at the Be-Desired website that talked about how the owners of the company are enjoying penthouse suites and nice cars etc... The article has since been removed...
well i started nv like 2 days ago im 200 pounds and 5'8 my friend has been taking it for 2 months and she was 170 pounds and she is down to 150 so im really excited to try it:)
ReplyNot every product works for every person. But don't put all your faith in one product. It is always important to eat well and do exercise, althougt we dont like it. I entered just to see how marketing its working, and let me tell you something, they are doing a damn great job. I think it's more cheap to go to the doctor and ask him/her what is better for each one (it could be more difficult but more effective).
ReplyEveryone always comments how exercise and eating right are all that is necessary, but that is not true for everyone. All bodies are built different and if green tea and hoodia ( key ingredients in NV) can give my metobolism a boost then I am all for it. If it doesn't work then just stop using it. The point isn't who is the spokesperson or how these companies are deceptive, the point is how you feel about yourself and if taking a weight loss pill can help you with confidence then don't let any cynical posting stop you. These pills aren't meant to be used alone so no duh that you need to exercise and eat right... the pill is just there to help your body respond better to both.
good luck to everyone in finding what they are looking for.. whether it be in a diet pill , on a tredmil or bothl!
ReplyThe thing is about these diet/beauty pills is that...yes, they may suppress your appetite, shrinking your stomach momentarily, giving you the illusion of a higher metabolism, but the fact of the matter is...the day you forget to take that magic pill you'll gain back everything you lost plus more. The only thing that can speed up your metabolism is regular exercise. I speak from experience.
LAZY MOM OF TWO GOES RUNNING AND STOPS SNACKING SO MUCH
ReplyI purchased NV and it does not make me feel weird and it does help with my cravings and my appetite is not as big. I bought it at Walmart for $18.00
ReplyGood luck everyone!!!!
I have been exercising and eating sensibly for approximately 8 months, and although i was losing weight the rate of my weightloss was discouragingly slow. I started taking NV 2 months ago and I have gone from 147 LBS to 134 lbs effortlessly. In fact I lost more weight in the last 2 months than I had in the 6 months prior. I definitely endorse this product. I believe it is the hoodia and the green tea that accelerated my fat burning ability and helped suppress my appetite. As far as it being instrumental in making one more beautiful, i don't know if i can support that claim. I certainly feel more beautiful because i feel healthier and trimmer and that's what's important. It may not work for everyone but it certainly helped me overcome my metabolic resistance. I'd say try it before you judge it. Carmen Electra as a spokesperson is a crock; but if you educate yourself on the ingredients, you'll see why it may be an effective product for you, too.
ReplyI just needed something for the energy so I can get out and do the excerise needed for weight loss. If this helps me, then I'm trying it. Yes, I too would like to find a magic weight loss pill, but we all know that we still need to eat right and exercise.
By the way..regarding PRO-ACTIV...it is absolutely the best product on the market that I know of. I started using it at 53 after 40 years of bad acne and the resulting scars. All the medications and creams (including Retin A) that doctors prescribed were unsuccessful and some were actually damaging to my skin and health. I only wish I had believed the claims much earlier. I now keep my Grandson and niece supplied with this fantastic product. My Grandson went from 'pizza face' to wow in less than 2 months. And yes, I know puberty played its part as well.
ReplyI know this isn't a Blog for Pro-Active but couldn't help expressing my opinion
I started taking ny yesterday, 5'7" 140lbs. My reason for trying it is because i only want to lose 10 pound ( weight that i gaind over a month long holiday). I will be excercising and eating heathy...things i already do (just not on my trip...i wanted to have fun). I figured this would be a faster way to get back to my normal size before winter hits and i pack on more pounds. Look for my final results on August 28th.
I too am a beliver in Proactive...it may not work for everybody, but if you have problem skin and you have never tried it before...it's worth a shot, after all you have probably tried everything else. I know i did!
ReplyJust to let everybody know....I am taking NV....and not only am I finding that, it gives me the energy to want to exercise, but it also has made my egg shell nails strong, but my skin seems like it is as soft as a baby, I didn't really need to take it, cuz i only wanted to lose maybe like 10 pounds, but with this extra energy, Im finding, im happier and that weight is gone...so it might just all be in my head...but I highly doubt it, i like this product I guess...although I also started to take multi vitamins around the exact same time, so who knows
ReplyHi I'm from Austraila and I was hoping that you send NV here as I'm very happy to give it a go can you help. Thank's.
ReplyI've been using NV for about a month and coupled with a clean diet (no junk food) and exercising 5 days a week, I've lost about 7 pounds. This product is HIGHLY effective...it doesn't make me jittery and definitely has revved up my metabolism. I am a fitness model wanted to drop 5 pounds quickly and this definitely did the trick. Don't know what will happen once I stop taking it but my best friend used it for 4 months, dropped 20 pounds and has kept the weight off since she stopped using NV. I can't say enough good about it!
ReplyPS. Wal Mart sells it cheapest, $23!
heyy.
Replyi get about 5 dollars a week as an allowance so after a month im going to buy nv. im 120 pounds right now but i wanna be 90 aND NV says it can make someone drop 35 pounds in a month but i really only need to lose 20 pounds right now. i usedto be 125 pounds but i lost 5 pounds in two weeks from eating healthy. maybe NV can help me lose about 4 pounds a week or something. NV BETTER WORK OR I WASTED MY MONEY!
I just started taking NV today. I did feel energetic, but not in the hyper way hydroxycut made me feel. I do believe in supplements, if only forthe placebo effect. Before my baby I went from 145 to 131 with the help of supplements. YES, I worked out. YES, I ate better. But I do believe the supplements (or the money I spent on them) helped to keep me motivated.
ReplyPlus- I like that NV is supposed to help hair/nails. Since my baby mine have been a bit lackluster.
Having recently been in the states I have heard and read about this product but did not think regular supermarkes ie Walmart etc sold it - you would not be able to buy this in a UK Supermarket. So after arriving home in the UK I am trying to purchase it over the internet but find that no-one will ship internationally. Has anyone got any Ideas, I would love to try it as after stopping smoking 7 months ago I have developed an appetite and have put on 12lbs. Thanx
