Online Diet Pill Peddlers Prosecuted
$33.6 million in nine months. That's the amount of money funneled through a single on-line pharmacy. Two Doctors have now been indicted due to approving prescriptions without seeing anyone in person.
Prosecutors said more people could be charged in the case. They said five doctors approved more than 350,000 prescriptions from September 2003 to May 2004.For those who have seen such sites - it's a simple process to order (often at discount prices) any form of prescription medication. Many of the popular drugs sold are weight loss medications such as phentermine or adipax.
Some of these drugs are habit forming and have side effects that should be taken into careful consideration. The on-line ordering process quickly subverts such precautions.
Could this be the beginning of the end for these kinds of sites?
Wouldn't it be great if spam emails for pills began to dry up...?
I think I just saw a pig fly past my window.

I personally am glad to see this action being taken. Companies offering 'quick fixes' are just latching onto peoples problems to make a quick buck. I've yet to see a diet pill/product that actually works in the long term, what's really needed to lose weight is a change in lifestyle.
Having said that these pills could be used by people in desperate need of a slight short term change to give them a boost to succeed in long term weight loss....but these pills/products aren't marketed with that message.
ReplyI am also glad action is being taken towards recommended diet pill and quick fixes by doctors. Weight loss and healthy living is not a short-term thing but a life change towards a healthier life.
ReplyThis isn't about the efficacy of diet pills, but the dubious practice of prescribing without consultation.
Replyplaces like this make it seem easier than it is, but without a real medical work up reactions can happen to patents.

Great news! I, for one, am overjoyed to hear that some of these charlatans are being put out of business. It is incredibly dangerous when needy, gullible people put their confidence into faceless and shady strangers.
I imagine that this may just be the beginning, like cutting off the head of Hydra -- lop one off, two grow back. More charlatans/predators are just waiting in the wings to take up the slack.
ReplyThis is good. These diet medications are seldmon really needed and should always be used under medical supervision.
ReplyYes the DEA has really cracked down on these "rogue" online pharmacies. There have been many arrests with steep jail time penalties. Most of the controlled diet pills are VERY hard to obtain online these days. These merchants just aren't willing to take the risk anymore.
