The Photo Diet

There are, quite literally, hundreds of diet eBooks on the market today. Most of them offer the same information. Occasionally someone will provide some originality - and this is the case with My Photo Diet, a low-fat, low-calorie diet from Stephen Butler and Leslie Stefanowicz.

Rather than listing complex meal plans or guidelines, the Photo diet offers a prescriptive diet plan (based on American Dietary Association principles) where each meal has been photographed. The premise behind the food plans is to create basic meals using foods that we are already familiar with.

What you get:

  • 90 days of meal plans (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two snacks). These are presented in the form of a downloadable eBook, and can also be access by a members-only website.
  • Daily calories: 1300-1500.
  • The eBook has a section on exercise.
  • Each and every meal and snack has been photographed.
  • Cost: $19.95 (one-time fee).

The bottom line here is practicality


Day 2
While we may not necessarily agree on macro-nutrient ratios or food choices - some people may find it refreshing to look over some basic meal plans.

It's wonderful to have diets that have a truly gourmet flair, but there is also a need for simplicity (especially for those who are not fans of cooking).

Author Dr Butler is attempting to simplify some of the vague advice coming from medical practitioners. With regards to the Photo Diet he advises:

When your doctor tells you to follow a low calorie, low fat diet, this is what your doctor means.

I am not a fan of on and off dieting by any means - and I don't believe the authors of the eBook are promoting that idea (the book advises us to "Make it a lifestyle change, NOT a fad diet"). Indeed it is essential to take the principles from such a diet and apply them as permanent lifestyle changes.

I was disappointed to see little in the way of oily fish, nuts or nut butters, or oils such as flaxseed or olive. However... I guess that's why they call it "low-fat".

I got my own kind of Photo Diet. I look at pictures that are taken at parties and family dos and I say "wow, im looking good." or "Damn, I've put on a few." I then adjust my diet and exercise accordingly to make the changes needed.

Well, this is an interesting diet and way to go about losing weight. The Photo diet is a great way for people to see real portion sizes and not what they think. I guess I would only recommend this diet to someone who needs to learn what portion sizes are and how much they really should eat at one time.

I've just stumbled across your blog. Very interesting!

I've seen this book but after flipping I decided not to get, partly because I have so many books already and I have the know how on how to make something low fat and how to make better choices.

I just gotta actually follow through. That's the tough part.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Seeing a picture of certain foods can stimulate faster than reading the dull diet menues. Anyway you become accustom to recognizing what a normal portion looks like.

There were a number of books that were popular a few years ago, right around the time volumetrics came out. Very simply the book showed you what a "standard" meal came out to calorically, then pictured what you could have instead for that caloric amount.I found it very helpful for motivation.

On the other hand, I've never found sites that just perscribe one set of meals or another to be very helpful.

People comprehend images better than words. Seeing the image of foods to eat and their proper portions may help you in recognizing if you eat bad or too much

i agree with the idea..
i wudn't pay for it, tho..
but this is the era of personalization..
and a diet we can visualize as our own...
the way "we" are supposed 2 eat..
makes sense 2 me....

I think the PhotoDiet idea is exceptional, easy to understand, simple to execute for everyone (even children in the kitchen can do it) - and there's no guilt attached! All it really takes is the individual's willingness to DO IT every day.

Also the diet designers have other projects for schools, fat free foods (that taste good!) and an invitation to corporations/business owners/health care providers to make the diet program available to employees, patients, groups and students!

Change process has to start at the top level with a full committment of management, doctors, educators and group leaders. Complications of obesity are a major reason to make changes in how we all perceive eating food, ingesting quantity (no super-sizing) and making healthy, complementary food choices.

Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words!! Kudos to
the designers of this unique dieting concept - just look at the pictures, DO IT and it works!!! It's the best download $$$ investment we can make in our healthy livestyle choice. So, make the committment and the resolution to DO IT and KEEP IT GOING then you will have a Happy and Healthy New Year!!

My husband & I just started this diet and we are really happy with the program. It is sensible, flexible, and easy to work with! Our adult son also decided to try a modified version (without our suggesting or prodding). It's a win/win situation!

I have a visual brain, in that I tend to store information visually/photographically (in images). This diet is GREAT for me as it allows me to store/recall a visual of how normal, healthy meals should look.

I like the use of plain, white plates and bowls, in normal sizes, too. This enhances my ability to store an image of the serving size (e.g. I will forever "see" potato chips tucked into a white cup as a serving, rather than the bottomless jumbo bag "serving" many of us suck down without thinking while watching televsion.)

We are bombarded with insane portions in restaurants, too: all you can eat this, heaped on a platter that...it's crazy. A normal serving has been lost in our restaurant culture. These images help me calm down, focus, and comprehend how off-base American eating has become, and how I will need to "see" food in the future in order to keep my weight from super-sizing!

I am really thrilled to have found this photo diet program.
