Iced Green Tea: The New Coke?
Green tea is renown for its healthful properties. Coca-cola, however, represents the epitome of sugary soft drinks.
I compared the ingredients of a 'reputable' tea product with Coke... and to my surprise discovered they are almost the same.
Lipton is a popular tea brand owned by giant corporation Unilever. Their tag line is "100% Natural Tea". Their website is covered with bold and glitzy health claims - such as the Lipton "Live Well Challenge" or the benefits of naturally protective antioxidants and so on.
Our green tea is full of clean taste, vitality, and great flavor. Plus, LIPTON Iced Tea provides protective flavonoid antioxidants.
Let's compare Lipton Iced Green Tea with Coke:
| Coca-cola Classic | Lipton Green Tea with Citrus |
| Ingredients: Carbonated water High fructose corn syrup Caramel color Phosphoric acid Natural flavors Caffeine ![]() | Ingredients:Water High fructose corn syrup Citric acid Green Tea Sodium hexametaphosphate Ascorbic acid Honey Natural flavors Phosphoric acid Sodium benzoate Potassium sorbate Calcium disodium edta Caramel color |
| Nutrition Per 8 Fl Oz: Calories: 97 Carbohydrate: 27g Sodium: 33mg | Nutrition Per 8 Fl Oz: Calories: 80 Carbohydrate: 21g Sodium: 70mg |
If that's not enough - Lipton actually offer a "diet" green tea version sweetened with aspartame and ace-k. It's an oxymoron - enjoying pure green tea is all about enjoying the very subtle flavor.
Is it not possible to drink anything without copious quantities of sweeteners?

ReplyEven better would probably be to make your own at home from regular green tea bags and chill it.

ReplyI was reading about cooking vegetables and it said that many of the antioxidants in vegetables come out of the vegetables when they are cooked in water (boiled). The antioxidants end up in the cooking water and there is very little left in the vegetables after cooking, a bad situation if you are eating vegetables for health (unless you drink the water). If green tea is brewed using hot water the antioxidants will enter the water (the tea) and you drink them. So it would be better to use hot water. The water should not be too hot as excessive heat destroys some nutrients. So boiling the tea bags would probably not be good. Hope this helps.
That sounds nice, getting JUST green tea in a bottle. As hard as I've looked, I've never been able to find plain green tea in a bottle. I've never been to dunkin donuts, I would be surprised to find green tea there too, but where is this dunkin donuts? I've never heard of putting cream in grean tea, why would someone do that?
ReplyI love real green tea too (lately I've gotten hooked on white tea). But, just to jump to the defense of My Fellow Americans, on a recent trip to Tokyo I went into a Starbucks to get an espresso. The place was mobbed by locals, all ordering Frappuccini... I think we all love our sweet drinks...
Replyok.... so this is going to be a really dumbass question but i'll ask it anyways :) After reading all your comments... im guessing the "sweetened icea tea" at QT is not so good for you. Just a wild guess since it tastes unnaturally and ridiculoulsy sweet for natural iced tea. What do you think? Answer me asap as I am contempolating buying another 62 ounces of the stuff in another... oh let's see, about 15 minutes... help!
Replyim wondering if its ok to drink green tea in cold water without brewing it in hot water? eg: does it lose health benefits if not brewed hot? i use a cup of cold water, put a tea bag in and it steeps through as i drink it. I want to know if im getting the benefits of this, as it takes too long to brew it hot and wait for it to cool down!! Thank you for your advice, I really apreciate it. Take care
ReplyI actually read that if you're drinking iced green tea - it is better to brew it cold rather than hot. The link and the text is below.
http://www.worldconsortium.com/brewing.htm#icedtea
You should never brew Green Tea with hot water and then cool it to prepare cold, or iced tea. Instead, please double the amount of the Green Tea leaves used to brew it in cold water in a sealed container. This way you keep the aroma, the natural color and the medicinal health benefits of the Green Tea. The reason this way is better, is that you avoid oxidation that can occur if the tea is left open to the air in an attempt to cool it after hot brewing. The brewing time is actually very short. For example, 10-15 cups of tea can be brewed in a jar in the ice box in just 30-45 minutes. Please note that you can refill the jar with water to brew more tea when the level reaches one third full. You may repeat the same procedure up to 3 times using the same Xianju Green Tea leaves. It is better than drinking water for walkers, runners, cycling, mountain climbing or any athletic sport in general that demands replenishment of body fluids
ReplyI brew 4 teabags in my coffeepot, rinsing first, then sweeten with a small amount of organic sugar and chill overnight
ReplyRecently I read an article in the St. Johns Hospital mailer here in Los Angeles. They listed many benefits of drinking green tea and explained the oxidation (or lack of) that takes place after harvest of the leaves. Green tea is prepared from unfermented leaves, the leaves of oolong tea are partially fermented, and black tea is fully fermented. This article stressed the importance of retaining the polyphenol content. This is the antioxidant quality in the leaf. There was a recipe for brewing green tea while maintaining the polyphenol or catechins. The recipe consisted of a few tablespoons of loose leaf Japanese green tea, room temp. water, about 1/3 of a lemon (sliced). The tea is placed in the refrigerator overnight and can be enjoyed all day. Refill with water for the next day and start fresh for the third day. They stress using Japanese tea because of the steam drying process used in Japan.
ReplyI have been drinking this cool brewed tea over the last week and I love it. It is very refreshing and (in my opinion) no sweetener needed!!
one word, epigallocatechingallate - DRINK MORE GREEN TEA. Even if its pum'd with sugah.
ReplyInteresting study but kind of pointless. Of course Lipton's bottles sweetened green tea is going to have sugar, preservatives, etc. Some will like it, some won't. For me the question is how does it compare with brewed green tea for antioxidents, catenchins, etc. -- the stuff that has the alleged health benefits? The benefits seem to be pretty impressive and if Lipton can put out a drink that has the same level of healthful compounds in it that brewed tea has (or at least close), then it's a good thing and MUCH MUCH better for you than Coke. Purist can continue to brew their own, more power to us, but face it, not everyone is going to do that, and sometimes you have to grab a drink from 7/11. Bottled green tea with healthful catenchins would be a great product.
ReplyOne also needs to remember that when bottling a drink, they must add preservatives and what not inorder to keep it from spoiling in the store. So of course the home brew is going to be better for you, you're not bottling it for consumption in a few weeks. Anything that is bottled or canned is going to have the unhealthy stuff in it so that it remains "fresh" for travel and gives it a shelf life.
ReplyYou forgot something.. Servings per container = 2.5 so that makes it 80 calories times 2.5 . The total calories in this bottle is 200. ewwwww
Replylipton green tea info says coffee has no antioxidants. the truth is it has More antioxidants than green tea. ha! our government allows lies on labels. yes, coffee has more caffeine than tea. the hippies had an idea. it was called dropping out. but the masses stay hooked on big brother and allow advertising agencies to think for them. with the internet at your fingertips, there is no excuse to be uninformed anymore.
ReplyCaffeine is not an antioxidant, my dear self-declared drop-out hippie, so coffee is not a better source of antioxidants than tea. Go back to school and attend an introductory chemistry class.
ReplyArgh. I stand corrected- caffeine DOES have antioxidant properties. My apologies and I retract my last comment. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=8679661&dopt=AbstractPlus
ReplyYou're comparing cola with a bottle of tea from the soda
Replyfridge at the store. In other words, a soda drink loosely based on green tea. Instead, compare it with a mug of green tea made from a tea bag.
It's always best to just make your own green tea. If you want it to be pure that is..
Replyjust drink the kind you make from dried tea, it only has the natural ingedigents and can be sweetened with what you want. i know its not as convenient but its better for you.
couple of side notes:
Reply1. the lipton's bottled version has Phosphoric acid in it and i have read this is the chemical your body used to tell your bones to release calcium. Causing you bones to weaken.
2. i was shopping for clothes today and the really nice sales lady was helping me find a jacket to wear to cover up my excess weight (size 14 now) and i said if i was skinny like her i wouldnt have to worry about such things. to this she said she used to be a size 22 and the frist thing i tought of was she must have had surgery. but she said that she didnt and she didnt diet and she didnt exercise. she said all she did was start drinking one microwave heated cup of lipton cranberry and pomegranate green tea with a teaspoon of sugar three times a day with each meal. now, she doesnt get anything out of telling me this, she sells clothes not tea, (although i did tell her if i lost weight i would be coming back to her to buy all new clothes). she said that she has had other people she has told come back to show her how much weight they lost.
3. company's only sale what ppl buy, if the government educated the ppl and the ppl educated the children then they wouldnt be able to sell as much junk as they do.
this tea is magical..especially ice cold..better than water (diet of course)
ReplyI HAVE BEEN DRINKING LIPTON DIET GREEN TEA FOR APPRX 2 YEARS AND ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE TASTE.
ReplyShut up. who cares really??
Replyso annoying.
DIET Lipton Green Tea is GREAT!!!
0 cal - GREAT for dieting!
0 carbs - GREAT for diabetics!
Some of us don't like unsweetened drinks, and this is an excellent alternative to other drinks that are not so healthy. Also, aspertame.org has a new study out that dispells the health myths of this artificial sweetener.
ReplyWhy can't we buy Diet Green tea with mixed berry in Tennessee? I have to drive to Ky to get it.
ReplyIt’s crazy. You have to brew the Green tea yourselves, otherwise your drinking crap. I do have a question; my wife and I brew green tea ourselves and put the green tea we brew in the frig; I notice small string like objects floating in the bottles. My cleaning lady is telling me its mold. I think its just green tea floating. But she has me second guessing. Can someone tell me if they know what this is?
ReplyGreen tea is a healthy drink by itself. Adding sugar makes it tastier but diminishes its health qualities.
ReplyI don't understand...leaving the tea in the sun can harbor bacteria, because of the bacteria in the water? Well are we supposed to be boiling all our tap water before using it then? I mean it's treated water and tea. Not raw meat and feces. How big is the risk, really?
ReplyI recently read an article in Men’s Health that looked at the Nutritional Value of bottled green tea. They basically got a lab to analyze 14 different tea’s for catechins, calories, and caffeine. The best tea they found was Honest Tea “Organic Honey Green Tea”, with 215mg of catechins, 74 calories, and 97mg of caffeine. It wasn’t the easiest to find but I ended up finding it at a Sheetz gas station. It is pretty good and not loaded down with sugars.
ReplyHonest Tea, I drink that. The name says it all really. I am also a huge fan of brewing my own, mainly because of this garbage high fructose corn syrup manufacturers put in theirs. I tried this Lipton Green Tea and it tastes like crap. Doesn't even resemble tea the slightest bit. Honest Tea is USDA organic and has no HFCS or artificial additives. It tastes like tea and is just a "tad sweet" as it says on the bottle. I would recommend this to anybody looking for a bottled tea that actually tastes like tea!
ReplyA couple of things.
I believe that the iced tea is also touted as one of these weight loss 'tips' where it takes xx amount of calories to heat the liquid up.
As for the 'normal' version of the tea above its a sad fact that they probably had to add this as most people are so used to sweetened drinks. I personally drink diet drinks and various green and white teas to try and wean myself off the former.
In the UK we have a number of flavoured green teas such as lemon and mint, if you have these they are good to try.
You also have to brew properly, brew it too long and the taste can be overpowering.
ReplyOh man...thought I did something g0od......how are you suppose to lose weight on green tea then?
ReplyComing from a japanese, i love ice green tea, but i never drink it with anything but the tea leaves and water. I have tried this lipton green tea drink and it taste too sweet for me. Green tea is better a bit bitter, Oi Ocha is what i drink. sugar and lemon in my opinion destroy the taste.
