Gadgets Strange and Useful
Just like fitness equipment - purchasing a gadget doesn't guarantee that you will actually use it. The last few years have seen an endless parade of intriguing gadgets. Here are a few weird and wonderful inventions that caught my eye over the last few months.
Motion Lingo's Adeo
This gadget uses GPS technology to track your stats (speed, distance, time, calories burned etc). It not only tracks the details but can be connected to your portable music player and will 'announce' the statistics in a spoken voice.

Nike+
A very clever idea. A sensor is placed in the sole of your running shoes. The sensor sends data to your iPod Nano (via a receiver). The data can be viewed on screen, or synced up to a web-based tracker (see more on Cool Hunting).
Demand Fitness
They call it an Internet-based gym. Demand Fitness offers over 100 online streamable workout videos via subscription. Realistically you'd have to have your computer set up in your workout area or have a wireless laptop. Occasionally I have set up my laptop while using my elliptical trainer. However I tend to watch DVD's that take my mind off the panting and sweating!

Ogo Oxygen Water
Ogo have a series of waters (sparkling and still) that have 35 times the oxygen content of other waters. Okay. Ummm. Why?
Flatulence Absorbing Chair Pad
So you've been upping your intake of beans... and... well... people have to work in the same office as you. Flat-D offer a thin charcoal pad that sits on your chair and absorbs those unwanted odors. Be warned, it masks the smell not the sound...
The EnterTrainer
A couch potatoes nightmare. This is a device that controls your TV's volume based on your heart rate. Slacken off on your exercise and you can't hear the TV. Get back on track, and the volume comes up.
My husband built a similar thing to the EnterTrainer using an exercise bike, a car alternator, and a battery boost pak. Basically, he rigged the alternator onto the bike's drive belt and then connected it to the boost pak. The current from the alternator was stored in the boost pak. Then, he ran an invertor off the boost pak and plugged the TV into it. Since it takes quite a bit of energy to power a TV, if you slack off on pedaling the bike, the TV will turn off.
Right now, it doesn't work because the boost pak broke, but when it did work, I'd pedal for a half hour or so and watch a TV show. My husband, who built the thing so he'd be motivated to work out, pedaled for something like 4 minutes before he gave up and said it was too difficult to pedal.
ReplyEnterTrainer sounds like fun. I read about it on a videogame workout blog.
ReplyI have heard about The EnterTrainer a while back but really didn't think it was very popular. Lately, I have seen this new technology being talked about and thought it is a really cool tool.
ReplyYou know, I've never understood those products with additional oxygen. I mean, don't we want to eat lots of antioxidants in order to prevent the damage from excess oxygen molecules?
Replyerr as far as excess oxygen in water, it's just a gimmick. How exactly can you oxygenate water? You can't on a molecular lever because then it won't be water, and if you're just adding oxygen to the substance, that's like opening a bottle and letting air in. I don't know... I had this conversation with my physics teacher and came to the conclusion that it's just not happening.
ReplyI dunno. I'm interested in oxygenated water if it'll give you any extra energy for a work out or the like. I may order a case just out of curiosity.
