Fitness Freaks and Health Nuts
Ever been called a fitness freak? Or maybe a health nut? What does it really mean and is it justified?
It's worth pointing out that there are situations where exercise and nutrition can become obsessional or even addictive (orthorexia for example). Here, I am referring to an average person who consistently engages in a physically active and healthy lifestyle.
Perhaps you have a home gym set up. Maybe you shop at organic whole food stores. Maybe you excitedly talk about your new workout program. At some stage, somebody is bound to call you names.
Why?
I once worked with a man who was very fit. He bicycled to work, and would go running most days - some of these runs were very intense. He generally looked after his diet. I may not have called him a 'fitness freak' to his face - but I would shake my head and think it.
If I try and examine my thoughts (in hindsight) - here is what I come up with:
- I was jealous of the amount of time he had available to pursue these things. At the time I had a number of responsibilities and commitments that this person didn't.
- Deep down I wished I had that kind of fitness - but knew that there was no way that I could possibly motivate myself to be that dedicated.
- I would feel lazy just being nearby this guy.
Looking at those points - there is a common word: I.
It was all about my own frustrations and feelings.
If someone calls you names just because you are going to the gym 4 times per week - it is highly likely that their comments are more about themselves than your activities.
Yes I have been called a health freak – I like it. I was called worse when I was fat.
It is much better than the alternative of blending into the mass of obese middle aged men and women that increasingly populate the planet.
ReplyYeah, I get the "fitness freak" one pulled on me a lot. You can't run 50 miles a week without most people calling you crazy. The worst comments come from other women, usually...I get different things: "Well, if you had kids or any sort of responsibility you wouldn't run as much" or "I've never liked an 'athletic' body...looks too butch". Different little backhanded comments that are supposed to make me feel bad about my choice to pursue a healthy lifestyle. I'm 100% sure it's their problem and I've always known that. And the thing is, for every person out there that thinks I'm a freak, there is one that tells me how great I look and how cool it is that I run so much. It sure beats getting called "thunder thighs" or "blubber butt", so I'm not going to complain too much.
ReplyI've been called a "gym rat" countless times! I work out for at least an hour everyday, but I'm not convinced that qualifies me as an exercise rodent:) I think people who don't work out that much or hate exercise can't understand why anyone makes it a priority and actually enjoys it.
There are worse things than being a gym rat though, I'd hate to be called flabby or unathletic. Some people might call me a slave to the gym, but my underarms don't flap around when I wave goodbye as I run away from them!!
ReplyI was in a restaurant with my boyfriend once and this guy told us we looked "disgustingly healthy" (we'd been out for a long-ish bike ride and then came in for dinner), but it was clear that he meant it as a compliment. It's actually one of the best compliments I think I've ever gotten, probably since I was all sweaty and felt just plain disgusting, haha.
ReplyOh, and he looked to be in pretty good shape himself, so I don't think he was jealous or thought we were crazy or anything. I think he was just being nice, in a sort of odd way.
Yeah, i remember being called FAT ASS,(by a mean person) but most people kept quiet back when i was heavy
so i think "health freak / anorexic "comments are a little better,
Replyonly I am sick of hearing loads of such comments from supposedly nice people
who care so much they must speak out against the horrors of blueberries and broccoli.
haha, i've never been called those names directly, but I get it every time someone looks at my plate of food and says " you eat so healthy". I used to do karate and I would go to the dojo(aka karate gym) religiously, my roomate would say I was obsessed, but it was my release from a stressfull college life. I went to the gym a whole hecka times and once I found aerobics classes on my campus, I went there instead! so yes I got alot of " oh my gosh so dedicated" but I guess I was never called a health freak because I was heavy back then. I've lost a crap load of weight. And guess what, I like to exersize and will continue to do so until I am practically fat free! If my body was called butch it would be an honor, becuase It would mean I have finally got control of my body.I used to be a 3x!!!
ReplyBefore my knee surgery I was call the muscle boy :)
ReplyNow I try to motivate myself to get on a stationary bike at least 3 times a week.
I need some more time to get back in shape and be practically fat free!
ReplyOh man i love that picture, so ironic.
ReplyBut really, if people take the time to make fun of you because you look good and healthy, you know you are doing thing right.
I've been called a health nut before, but in the end I'm healthier then they are, so "booya!"
ReplyI work out every day P90x muscle confusion, with people at a tae kwon do club.I feel great working out with people that support me and my health goals.Thats what its all about. so who cares what people say.
ReplyI have been called a fitness freak at University. I used to do taekwondo, a fair bit of swimming & also went to the gym. I used to really enjoy it & I have always enjoyed having a nice body - not a stick thin one or a "muscle man " one- but slim & toned. I like to eat healthy too.
I have had a child 3 months ago so haven't worked out in more than a year but I have lost all my pregnancy extra weight & I am sure than been fit before helped a lot !
ReplyYep. Health nut and fruit phasers, all y'all.
ReplyI love the comments people make about me calling me a fitness freak or obsessed with working out and running. It makes me want to work out more and push my self even harder to become healthier and stronger person. Working out not only helps you physically but mentally to it relaxes you and releaves stress. So before so calls someone who cares about there body names ask yourself are you just jealous of them cause your not as in good of shape as them.
ReplyI am fat and it sucks, but i am a dedicated musician and i have to study all of my instruments daily which takes 6 hours and then for fun i usually jam with a couple of bands.
If i ever get to exercise its always a rare occasion and usually when i show such a crappy performance i give up.
What I need is the same willingness i give to my instruments to my exercise......
ReplyMy name is Joel Larson and I am a huge health/fitness nut. I swam the English Channel last summer and I am always looking for new ways to become healthier. I have been using Nikken products to purify my water and air; taking their vitamins; and sleeping on their sleep system. I feel healthier than I ever have, I can run, swim, and bike faster and farther than I ever have now that I have a "Wellness Home." I love these products that I just signed up last month to be a wellness consultant for them. Does anyone have any similar experiences or any feedback regarding Nikken products. Please email me at joel_larson@mynikken.net if you want to know more. Thanks! Joel
ReplyI'm 17 in highschool and I am desperately worried about my size, I have been going to the gym and running at least 2 miles a day in hope that I will finally get down to a ideal size. I know you need to work for what you really want but I am starting to give up. I am also athletic, I am on the swimming team and track and field and still I feel hopeless. It's also really hard to become more self motivated when magazine adds, television shows and just the usual person you see that you usually envy (Thin musclular bodies). I am sick of working for it and tired of trying. I am getting really fusterated and upset. When I think I am doing every thing right, and eating right, I see these articles on the enternet and they tell me I am doing every thing wrong?! Is that also part of some sort of marketing scheme? I don't follow any fad diets or waste money on pills and ab gagits and muscule machines. I just want to lose the stomach and gain some sort of self-esteem. I want to like the way I look, but still I am unsatisfied and totally hate the way I look. I am begining to think anorexia is a better solution.
I need some help or some sort of advise about how I really should be excersising and how I should be eating.
Replyits okay to be a bit bigger than others well wen i c my self i think im fat but others say im skinny thats wat you probably think as well thats life lol x
Replyi've been called a health freak before and it feels good after you see the results! So who cares what people say..
