Jillian Michaels: Free Weight Loss Plan?

Jillian Michaels appears on her website wearing a top emblazoned with the word "BULLY". She states "I'm not here to offer you false promises and all that crap that sells. I'm here to offer you a real weight-loss solution."

Jillian Michaels is best known for her role as personal trainer and coach on TV show The Biggest Loser. Now she offers her own weight loss solution that is:

1 Part Diet
1 Part Exercise
1 Part Attitude
The site promises a "free" weight loss plan by way of a comprehensive questionnaire that asks everything from your resting heart rate to your body shape.

After entering my details - the site came up with some interesting customizations (note that the website appeared to lock up when using the Firefox browser):

  • Because I have an "apple" body shape (store fat around the stomach and chest) - a particular workout plan that targeted visceral fat was suggested.
  • Because I am a fast "oxidizer" - a lower carb approach was suggested (50% protein, 20% carb, 30% fat).
  • For the behavioral aspect of the program - Jillian tells me "Well, I say screw willpower". She recommends getting a hobby, curbing mindless eating, and avoiding dangerous situations (like walking by the donut shop).

Not Quite Free
After that the site wanted my billing details. So much for a free weight loss plan. The costs are $4 per week, billed in 13 week amounts. You can cancel at anytime and will receive a refund for unused days. If you cancel before 4 weeks you will be charged a minimum of $20.

No Bull
Jillian Michaels champions a "no bull / no hype" approach to weight loss that is much more than a simple diet. Michaels has also authored a book "Winning by Losing : Drop the Weight, Change Your Life" which maintains a consistent 4.5 star review status at Amazon. That alone is indicative of the popularity of her approach.

Like many websites - I wonder how well the presence of a personal trainer translates into an online tool. It's great to read about motivation - it's another thing altogether to have a coach beside you pushing you onward.

This happens to be one of my pet peeves. The word free means that there is no cost involved. Invariably, if you follow a link for something that is "free", you have to pay something, most often postage and "handling." This is not free! If I tell you I have an item that I don't want and you can have it free, then when you come to get it or I deliver it I say that'll be ten bucks for handling, I lied to you! Free means it costs you nothing! Unfortunately, there is nothing free, so I will now climb down off my soapbox and shut up.

This day an age if people still fall for the 'free' titles they obviously are looking for something for nothing which doesn't make the world go round. done. Now if you are serious about weight loss and you don't want to invest in the social aspect of the internet (which is reviewed by the trainer as per her radio podcast) you can invest in her books...the same thing. I've been following the first one and have seen great results. Quit whining and get moving! The books are awesome - set up a social network of your own...I have.

I have always been a fan of Jillian on the Biggest Loser because of the way that she would just really push people. I think to make changes you have to have your attitude as well as your system shocked to make a great change in your life.

I would really like to see the details of Jillians plan. I bet it rocks.

How about a 3-sentence to follow My Free WeightLoss program: Eat a high monounsaturated, moderate protein, low carb diet, trans-free diet till your weight goes down. Add back some carbohydrates until you are maintaining your weight at your goal weight. Stear clear of fried foods, processed foods, and baked goods.

Here is what works for me:
Jan 1, 2006 I weight 245 pounds.
July 5, 2006 I weight 170 pounds.
That's a lose of 75 pounds.

It's easy. Eat whatever you want every 2 to 4 hours.
Watch your calories! Mine is set at 1200 per day!
BE SURE TO EAT PROTEIN! NO SUGAR! LOTS OF WATER!
Exercise: Pushups, pull ups, squats, and cardio, (at lease 30 minutes a day)! I did more on some days at less on others. The exercise is as YOU can do. If you can do just 1 of each, that is great! You will find that as the days go by you would increase dramatically!!!!!!
If I has a SO CALLED bad food, (ie. chocolate, I would ride a stationary bike until it showed I burned it off).
Another way to be positive you burned enough calories is by burning exactly half of what you took in for the day.
Hey..... it works great for me and now I have much more muscle and A LOT less fat! :)
Size matters.... went from a 42 RELAX fit jean to a 32 reg fit jean! :)
My motto.... JUST DO SOMETHING!
Here is a GREAT link to GREAT fitness calculators... and YES THEY ARE FREE!!

No Bull approach is always refreshing. However, the dream of a slender self - sells itself. Bull or no bull someone is always selling something.

Really some of the best nutrition advice you'll ever receive can be found in the abs diet book. Heck pick up the "eat right everytime" companion for 7 bucks! It really is solid/actionable information.

It's great to see an overall outlook on what's needed to lose weight successfully - meaning, not just the diet itself, but also an attitude and exercising.

Once people realize that, about 90% of diet programs out there can already be considered successful.

I was given a 1 week free trial after the "free" weight loss plan. The free trial still requires credit card details but it is said that I could cancel anytime by calling them. Because I am from another part of the world, it is not convenient for me to call at that particular timezone and working hours (and I don't think I could enjoy that toll-free call too).

So I emailed them to ask whether I am able to cancel the subscription via email(regardless it is a free trial or during a paid period). My intention was to find out and confirm BEFORE making any commitment.

They took 1 WEEK to respond my simple question and the person thought I WANNA CANCEL my subscription. I know my English is poor... but I believe my question is still comprehendable. The person wrote: "You can also respond back to this email to cancel. Note that it does take longer for us to respond back to email, so phone is the most efficient way to cancel and prevent charges from going through.".... I already experienced how "FAST" the email response could be....

And thanks to www.diet-blog.com, I found SparkPeople.

I have her book and dvd's, haven't read the book, haven't done the dvd's. Talk about zero motivation. I did read a book called Thintuition over my vacation because the guy is from Chicago and has his program available at the club next door. I like what he said. Basically, think like a thin person and only eat when you are hungry, stop when you START to feel full. It's tough because I've was a thin person for most of my life but forgot how to do that. I'm actually starting to think before I eat anything and not forcing myself to eat breakfast or lunch at said times simply because you are supposed to. I've tried everything and nothing has worked yet for me, hopefully this will.

That being said, Jillian is my fave trainer on the show, she's a hard motivator but you can tell she really cares about everybody she works with.

This website is a load of BS. The questionnaire forces you to provide false answers that define you for the convenience of placing you into a neat category (e.g., "slow oxidizer"). But if you haven't answered the questions truthfully, how can it be accurate? For example, it asks what type of snack or desert you crave. Even if you don't crave any of those choices, you have to choose one. It asks if your eyes tear or you nose runs--but not if you have allergies.

Finally, it tells you how many calories you should be eating, and which foods to eat or avoid. In my case it said 1200 calories. It then provided me with a 1400 calorie a day menu plan. Huh? And among the foods it suggested I avoid were avocadoes. What do you think a suggested snack was? Right! Guacamole. Makes sense to me...NOT. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS PLAN. It's a bunch of hype, great marketing copy, and irrelevant menu plans. Don't blow $20 on it. Just get off your chair and go take a walk.

I'm a member of Jillian's online program, and i love it! I have lost 66 pounds since joining in early May. I'll admit that not all of the members have been totally happy with the site, but it really depends on your own expectations. I've always been very happy with it, the plan is working very well for me, and i'm nearing my goal weight. Without Jillian's site i don't think that i would have been able to lose the weight. It's been a lot of hard work but the results have been fantastic! I love and admire Jillian and her program.

If you want an easy and realistic plan to follow, I recommend the Biggest Loser Book-adapted from the reality show. This book gives you a step by step breakdown on what you should be eating, how you should be exercising, and how to keep yourself motivated through your weight loss journey.

Since following this plan, I have lost a total of 8 plans, and feel ever so motivated to continue losing more.

Actually there's a lot of diet mis-information out there. I've had a lot of success with and thus have gotten certified in a more in-depth version of Metabolic Typing, which is what she's referring to when she mentions fast and slow oxidizers.

1200 calories is way too little. Low-fat diets actually cause ill health. Our bodies need more CLEAN fat (that means not trans fat, not in commercially raised, hormone-filled meats) to function well.

Don't believe me? Do the research! I've been in the health and fitness industry for years and can't believe what people keep telling themselves is true just because it's what "everyone else does." Be empowered and read for yourself!

Hi,
I cant seem to get any information from this website at all. I think Jillian is awesome on the TV, and im sure any one of us could lose weight if we had a trainer like that getting in our faces pushing us along every step of the way. Its just to impersonal on a website i reckon.
I've just done an hours exercise.. but ate fried chicken and chips for lunch, and yeah, i wonder why im fat!!

Jillian is awesome. She's been my idol since i first saw her on the aussie version of biggest loser. I love sport and fitness and I totally agree with her approach to weight loss. I'm reading her book now and it's great. I think her program is amazing; it's not offering unrealistic results and it's a combination of exercise, attitude and diet making it more productive. Lots of people will benefit from it, if they are willing to put in the hard work. Jillian is such a legend and good luck to her for the future....

"Free" these days means, "I won't ask you for money right away."

As soon as someone tells you they're going to "target fat" you know that don't know what they're talking about. You can't "target" fat. If you exercise and eat less (or eat better) you will lose fat, but you can't decide where the fat is going to come from. If you have flabby arms you can exercise your arms all day, but if your body wants to use fat in your butt that's where it will get it from.

If she doesn't know this basic concept, why bother with the rest?

I think Jillian and others like her show us what a healthy body should look like. Instead of all these magazines, and what you see on t.v., you see women who are too skinny, such as celebtries to whom young women model themselves after. I think any type of a program that offers a lifestyle change, that can help, is worth it. Not all programs work for all people. Everyone is motivated in different ways. Some people like myself went to a weight management Dr. to get my weight loss started,I lost 45lbs and now I am using Jillian Michaels to get my body in shape and create tone and definition.

I picked up Jillian's Making the Cut after being stuck in a fitness rut and fortunately I love the " in your face" attitude about it. Gentle chiding doesn't get you off the couch if you've already felt defeated. Realistically, no matter what healthy method of maximum weight loss you choose, it's going to cost money and it's going to take effort. Maintaining your health can be a little costly...considering that a snack cake can cost a quarter and a package of tofu dogs can cost about six bucks...eh it's life I guess. ;-) Good luck to everyone on their goals.

I always understood that free means free, and it upsets me that when it comes to weight loss and health we really can't get the assistance we may need without someone pockets getting fat like I am. I guess that's the kind of world we live in . We should eat heaalthy and take better care of our selves but everything is so costly.

I am a member of Jillian's site right now. I am please with the message boards and the exercise plan. The food plan can be adapted if you don't like the suggestions or have the time to cook what is suggested. It's about group support and $4 a week isn't going to break the bank for anyone really. (Think of that coffee drink most of us consume on a daily basis) Other programs cost $10 or more per week and require you to attend meetings which is nice for those that like human companionship, but it is nice to have daily support and encouragement. The circuit training kicks butt too!!!!

i dont think anyone here is arguing whether jillian is a bad trainer or not.. the fact is that she really doesnt care about fat people she's out there to make money... but what a cheap shot to take. the website looks to friendly, you think youv found all the answers to weight loss until you need to provide your bank details what a put off. ud think she would be mkaing thousands with one show after the other that she has to dip into the pocket of desperate people looking for solutions for health and fitness.. i say shame on you jillian.

I decided i have become a bit of a fan if Jillian, i have always been thinner and after seeing her on the show Biggest Loser, I went on the net to research her, cause boy is she mighty fine.
I checked out her webpage also, i only discover to be disappointed when asked to put in credit card details for your free program. I know we all gotta make a buck, but why advertise that it's free, when essentially it's not. Hmm, maybe ill be able to take from what info i did get in the preview with me and design my own program!

I agree with those who feel that nowadays "free" is often not truly "free" and I believe everyone should be upfront in their advertising.

That being said, these types of comments bother me:

"the fact is that she really doesnt care about fat people she's out there to make money..."

Why does she not care about overweight people just because she expects to be paid for what she does. Personal training is Jillian's job. Does your employer or business compensate you for the work you perform?

I'm sure she's spent plenty on her education to be able to help people get the best results possible. Jillian has a radio show where she gives out free advice (you can listen or download for free online) and I'm sure she does her share of free training. I fail to understand why anyone thinks she is obligated to give away her services away for free.

One thing that is totally free on the Jillian Michael site is the newsletter. I subscribe to a few health/fitness/weightloss type newsletters, and hers is one of my favorites. I'm not sure if she writes it herself or has a good ghostwriter (I suspect it's the latter), but it has a personal tone and some good motivational tips etc. I'm not a member of the site, but if the newsletter is any indication of the quality of the program, it's a positive sign.
