SolaCina: The Hybrid Hamburger
Food innovation company Solae have created a hamburger patty that is part meat and part soy.
SoleCina converts a proprietary blend of vegetable and meat protein into a nutritious hybrid with the consistency of cooked, whole muscle meat. Appropriately flavored, the final product almost perfectly mimics the taste and appearance of beef strips, chunks, patties or steak but with considerably fewer calories, less fat and less cholesterol. The hybrid burger has been called the "Better Burger" -- perhaps because it has half the fat (and saturated fat) of a similar sized burger.
Where SolaCina differs from other soy-based foods is in it's consistency: the product apparently mimics the chewiness and 'mouth-feeling' of real meats.
Personally I'm not quite sure how I feel about such a product. Solae Company are soy protein experts - they hold more than a 50% share of the world's soy protein ingredient market. Despite the prominent health claims from soy manufacturers - some critics argue that processed soy products are an inferior food compared to the natural soy bean.
What do you think?

Sounds okay to me.
ReplySome vegie burgers are pretty good though even without added meat.
How can junk food be healthy??
ReplyAre you suggesting that a hamburger is junk food? I am confused. Just because it is served in most fast food restaurants, it doesn't qualify as junk food in my eyes. McDonalds has salads now, are salads junk food?
anyway, i would definately give this a shot. Turkey burgers really don't have a lot of flavor.
ReplyWell I have always believed it is better to eat process foods at a minimum and every food that me view is junk or a cheat food just needs to be kept to a minimum. Lean hamburgers a good for me as they stil have that mouth watering taste that I love.
ReplyThe veggie burger in pure and hybrid form has been around for a while – like thirty plus years. I made these when I was in medical school in the 70’s.
I occasionally eat a burger these days but have moved to the buffalo burger – very lean and so far no reported cases on mad buffalo disease.
ReplyHmmm...doesn't sound half bad to me. I eat Boca burgers occasionally now, but they have a tendency to get sort of tough. I try to limit my consumption of all processed foods though, even Boca burgers, because of the preservatives and the price. I've made homemade "veggie burgers" using chick peas and grated zucchini among other ingredients, and those seem to turn out pretty well.
ReplyI've made a few stabs at eating various brands of veggie burgers, and so far they just haven't measured up. I've eaten so little red meat in the last year, that I'm not sure I even want to anymore.
ReplyI know Fat Dan doesn't feel that turkey burgers don't have a lot of flavor, but I've found that with the proper seasoning, I like them just fine. You have to read the labels though, as some brands have more fat than others.
Also, the main reason I probably won't try any more veggie burger type foods is, I feel that they highly over-priced.
I would avoid these so-called hybrid soy-meat burgers.
Instead, I would stick with grass-fed organic meat burgers, as long as it is on a whole grain bun.
And these medical people needs to stop lying to us about these isoflavones. These things causes diseases and cancer, not prevent them. Even medical teams today are casting doubts on them.
ReplyWhen it comes to the FDA and medical people advising us on what to eat and stay away from, there story always seems to change. One year they tell you one thing, and the next you hear another story. In my view, I do my own research, eat health and workout twice a day. That seems to work for me.
