Timestrips: Intelligent Labels
Most fridges are filled with half-used foods. Many of us rely on the "smell test" as proof of edibility.
There are now new labels that will visually show the age of an item.
Timestrips are 'smart' labels that measure elapsed time (from 1 day to 6 months).
’Best before’, ‘use by’ and ‘eat within’ dates have always confused people and more often than not food and medicines get thrown away as they are past their ‘use by’ date. For fresh foods without dates and frozen produce, it’s difficult to remember when the food was first opened or frozen.Apparently Nestle will be using the labels on commercial products. I'm sure it won't be long before more manufacturers incorporate such labels into their food items (via Popgadget).
I need one of those for my food as I cook a lot of food that I save for later and knowing how old it is become difficult. Thank you so much as this was very helpful.
ReplyI'm thinking my wife will love this feature as it comes into widespread use. I will like it to, as we have argued more than once, whether something needs to be thrown out. Peace at last???
ReplyMaybe I should get these for my mother in law...I once accidentally used some salad dressing in her fridge that had expired in 1999. I didn't get sick, but I am now extremely anal about checking the dates on my foods.
ReplyThis is a great idea. There is nothing worse than trying to perform the smell test because you can’t find your reading glasses and can’t make out the expiration date, then throwing the food away out of frustration because of the remote chance you will get food poisoning.
ReplyHmmm. I keep a sharpie marker in the kitchen, and we just write the date opened on the lid. Cheap and easy, and I can toss old salsa and keep the most recent easily.
