Water Sensations: Taste Test
Many people find it difficult to drink plain water. For this reason a number of manufacturers have stepped up to the plate and offered simple ways to add some flavor to the water.
This week I had a chance to try some Water Sensations (courtesy of Culture Captioning).
Water Sensations are little bottle-shaped sachets that contain a liquid "flavor enhancer". You open the sachet and squirt the flavoring into your water.
The flavorings contain no calories and are sweetened with sucralose (Splenda). Six flavors are available: Grape, Mixed Berry, Orange, Lemon, Peach, and Strawberry Kiwi.
I must confess that I did not really enjoy these flavorings. Perhaps I'm too used to drinking plain water - but the flavoring tasted slightly fake. I was careful to use the correct portion of water - but even so - the taste was too strong. I am neither a soda or diet soda drinker and I enjoy a strong espresso coffee - so perhaps my taste buds are skewed towards the bitter end of things.
However, I did recently enjoy the True Lemon sachets. These are from a different company - and the flavoring is more delicate.
However, as my wife commented after trying some water sensations: "Wouldn't it be just as easy to squirt in a slice of lemon?"
It's all a matter of taste.
I too find some of the water flavorings a bit too strong. However, upon your advice I tried out True Lemon and recently got my free sample in the mail. I was amazed at this product! So much so that I found myself on a mad hunt to find some more in a local store. I finally located a store that carries it and am not a True Lemon fanatic. The lemony taste is very true-to-life. Thanks for the tip! ~Pam
Replyflavored water! i def. need it, but i have become aware that some put sugar and other things that would have an adverse effect. i do like propel who is owned by gatorade. they make a flavored water available at any gas station with no calories or sugar!
ReplyThese products may help to some degree, however if you pardon my expression there is ‘no free lunch’ with respect to healthy eating and drinking. So with these products you may end up taking in sugar, artificial sweeteners, acidic compounds, preservatives, etc. But if the television commercials say we need them then I guess we need them, after all they only promote what is best for us, right?
After struggling with being overweight and other health issues for years, and recently having lived in Ukraine, I was able to observe huge cultural differences between the US and other parts of the world and come to some conclusions at least about myself and my relationship to food and drink.
I have come to believe that I as an American have been commercially programmed to have a unique relationship with food and drink, and that I have had to work quite hard to change this programming.
I don’t believe in most of the areas of the world where obesity in not epidemic that beverages always have to taste good, nor do I believe that feeling hungry is an abnormal sensation. Many people I met while in Ukraine drank mostly water and were mildly hungry more than 50% of the time. These were people of normal body weight and composition adn were quite active and mobile.
I think drinking fluids for purposes of hydration and eating to meet actual caloric and nutritional need is or perhaps should be the norm. I have also found that the longer I refrain from these artificial taste sensations, the better real food tastes.
Boring perhaps to how I used to eat - however the health benefits have been huge.
ReplyI've tasted some gross water in my day.
ReplyI like to keep a Glad Ware container in the fridge with chopped up lemon and/or lime. It's very convenient - when you grab a bottle of water (or a glass if you have a water dispenser) you just pop in a chunk that's already cut up.
I looked at the water flavoring packets but couldn't justify the expense when six lemons was the same price...
Reply"- when you grab a bottle of water (or a glass if you have a water dispenser)" - I use the faucet. Seems to dispense water just fine.
ReplyI use the faucet too. Well, actually I fill water bottles and then put them in the fridge so they get cold enough.
ReplyMy boyfriend lives in a building where the water is sort of gross, so he has one of those water filtration pitchers. I'm not sure of the brand. It helps the taste of the water as well.
I love water sensations, although I do use it with alot more water than called for and I only like certain flavors. Grape and Strawberry/Kiwi. Orange and Lemon are both too artifical tasting. Hey, anything to get me off diet coke...
ReplyI have fallen in love with water sensations! I have been using them since last May, when incidentally, I bought a few boxes on sale.
ReplyI started out using the packs according to the directions but soon found out it was too sweet for me. So now,I generally put one pack in 32 oz of water and it sweetens it just fine for me. Also makes them last longer!
I have also found out a great use for them. Senior citizens!!
Most seniors hate to drink water, so drink very little. Using these packs as I do,(1pk to 32 oz) has encouraged them to increase their water intake considerably. Water is so important to combat dehydration in our older citizens.
Oh sure keeping lemons in the fridge is a great idea. But if you calculate the expense of that compared to buying a box of 40 packets of True Lemon you'll find it's actually cheaper to buy the flavoring. Real lemons go bad quickly and aren't all that cheap. Last I checked it was 4/$2.00 for lemons at the fruit market .... and if that lasts me a week I'm lucky. A box of True Lemon only cost me $2.00 and will last me about 3 weeks.
And no, this product does not contain sugar, so that's not a worry for me either. And yes, some water tastes really yucky and often gets boring to the point of not wanting to even bother drinking my daily requirement --- so if this boosts the taste a bit, I'm all for it.

I too, went out and bought some True Lemon after reading Jim's review here... love, love, LOVE it. I have also given samples to many coworkers who have in turn went out and bought their own.
I also must add that I too enjoy the occasional bottle of Propel (or other fitness water), crystal light packets, etc. to shake things up, but have yet to try the water sensations. I will, though I tend to have the same opinions as Jim on these things. Also must say that faucet water is great... if it comes out of the faucet tasting good. I grew up where the water out of the faucet was better than any water you could ever buy and now live in a city that you can't hardly take the smell of the water that comes out of the faucet, so I have to buy water. But hey, I consider it money well spent... better water than soda right? I would like to know if any of you have tried the new Tab energy and what you think if it... or if it's too off the subject, maybe you could write a post on it, Jim?
ReplyPersonally, I really love the new Crystal Light "on the go" packets or whatever they are. If you like Crystal Light these are perfect. The Peach Tea flavor (which I'm not convinced they put any tea in) has me off soda completely. Raspberry Lemonade is also really good.
ReplyI'm glad I'm not the only one who has sought such a solution. Plain water has a bad taste to me. Probably from too many years of drinking cokes, tea and espressos...
I have been buying sucralose based flavored waters, such as Nestle PureLife. However, I recently found myself staying at a relative's home without such, and only plain bottled water at hand. After wasting 2 or 3 bottles not finishing them, I noticed a bottle of RealLemon (concentrated lemon juice, not the True Lemon talked about here) in the fridge. Squirted some of that in, added a packet of Splenda, and I was good to go - and cheaper than buying PureLife flavored waters. You can control how much sweetness and flavor you get this way too.
Replytim- I don't know if this is what you were reffering to when you said "with no calories", but Gatorade Propel does have calories, I believe it's about 10 calories per cup or something along those lines.
ReplyPlus it's suppose to be more of a supplement...
and I just like plain water or mineral water. Often Club soda.
Water Sensations are amazingly good as right after I read your post I went to purchase some for myself and was amazed. Thank you so much as it is awesome.
ReplyStay away from it. I would rather pour real lemon in it. Sucralose causes health problems. Don't you think that puting artificial stuff in your body that your body does not reconize leads to health problems? I am perfectly fine with just plain, clean water.
ReplyI like the Tab energy drink.
Replyi have a question that kind of has to do with this post. what are the daily water requirements? how many calories does water burn? and when something boosts your metabolism does it just burn off a certain amount of caloriesor does it have a lasting effect? thank you.
ReplySG,
Try this link for your water question: Recommended Water Intake
Water by itself doesn't burn calories, but I think you are wondering if increasing water intake will boost your metabolism. The answer is yes, but not by a huge amount. But every little bit of boost is a good thing. So drink lots of water anyway, not just for that, but for all the other nice things it does for us.
As to your metabolism question, understand this: Your body is always burning calories every moment you live. When someTHING boosts your metabolism, its generally temporary so more calories are being burned for however long the affect of the boost lasts. Physical activity, drugs and certain foods do this. However, excercise and good nutrition boosts your metabolism for the long term as well. The biggest reason is simply that as you excercise your muscles gain strength and therefore they are more active, thus require more energy to function.
ReplyFor my current diet, I've been drinking a lot of iced tea to help With my soda habit.
ReplyI brew my own and just add ice. I've fount that sugar substitutes stall my diet progress.
Has anyone tried HINT water? My local grocer just got it in. It doesn't have any sugar in it. I picked up a couple of bottles and I actually like it. It is great at the gym when I just need something other than regular water but don't want to be chewing gum etc.
ReplyHI,I LIVE IN LONDON,(UK),AND YOUR WATERS SOUNDS PERFECT,THE DIFFERNT FLAVORS, ARE MUCH BETTER, IN THE UK, WE ARE VERY BORING ON DIFFERNT FLAVERS,I GIVE YOUR COMPANY 100 PERCENT,IAM TRYING TO ORDER SOME OF YOUR FLAVORED WATERS
Replyi have been using water sensations for months now love them esp. str kiwi but the store where i get them no longer sell that flavor i dont care for the lemon but the mixed friut is also good thanks
ReplyI'm an avid user of Water Sensations. My favorite being the grape. The reason I liked it was because ALL the other sachets contain 5 calories. Water Sensations does not. Lately, I've found that my local grocers and discount stores have stopped carrying it (all flavors). I was hoping to purchase, in bulk, through the manufacturer's web site. I've just been to the website, which I checked mere minutes ago, and it has been shut down. What's the deal with Water Sensations? Have they sold out? Gone out of business? WHAT?
ReplyI too would love to know where I can purchase the water sensations product. Amazon is out of stock. I've sent numerous emails to the company and tried calling them to no avail. I was never a water drinker until I discovered water sensations. I've been off all the soda and have been drinking this for over a year. I'm in a panic about not being able to buy this product anymore. Does anybody know what's going on with them?
ReplyAny luck with finding out about buiying water sensations from any where?
ReplyThanx
Unfortunately Nina Riley, the owner of water sensations went out of business. I was an avid supporter, so much so that my entire family, most friends and co workers all became fans too. I have two daughters with blood disorders, a diabetic husband and mother, and I am overweight and HATE drinking plain water. It was the perfect solution for all of us. I truly miss this great product!!
ReplyI have been trying desperately to find out who purchased the company. I have been buying the peach for at least 5 years and can find nothing even close to resembling it. Anyone know how to find the new owners?
