Does Diet Affect Vision?

Research shows that women who eat a high-GI (glycemic index) diet have a higher risk of developing vision problems than those who eat low GI carbohydrates.

The particular vision problem examined is called age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

"The likelihood of having abnormalities characteristic of AMD during the eye exams more than doubled for women who consumed diets with the highest glycemic index, regardless of other factors known or suspected to increase the risk of AMD, such as age, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking and obesity," Taylor said. The researchers say the evidence suggests problems with glucose metabolism. The lead researcher cautions that this is just a "small, first-time look at the possible link."

The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

People who eat a high-GI diet and have vision problems probably have pre-diabetes or undiagnosed diabetes. Diabetes is associated with both vision problams AND a high GI diet. If you notice these problems, you should go to a doctore immediately and get your blood sugar checked.
